The article discusses the author's trip to Qui Nhon, a town in Vietnam, on the ship USS DIACHENKO. In the spring of 1965, this ship deployed to the Western Pacific with an Underwater Demolition Team embarked. Among other duties, DIACHENKO was assigned beach surveys at several South Vietnamese ports and harbors to determine the beach gradient for potential amphibious operations. Three or four U.S. Army Signalmen, dressed in camouflage fatigues were noticed when the ship was in the northern part of the harbor in the town of Qui Nhon. They asked if they could stay long enough. They wanted to know if there was any ice cream. Since there was ice cream machine, several gallons were packed in ice, and sent to the Army signalmen to share the delicacy with their buddies in town. Gallons of ice cream were scoffed up by the appreciate U.S. Army signalmen before ship left the harbor at Qui Nhon.
