This study examines how financial constraints and total assets affect the corporate bankruptcy risk of listed firms in Vietnam. Specifically, we test whether larger firms are less financially constrained and have lower distress risk subsequently. This study employs the dynamic system Generalized Method of Moments to analyze an unbalanced sample of 1,990 firm-year observations from 2010 to 2019. The results indicate that larger firm size increases the Z-score index, implying that larger firms have lower bankruptcy risk. Our finding also reports that financial constraints reduce the Z-score index, suggesting that financially constrained firms have extremely high bankruptcy risk. Our findings also show the inverted U-shape relationship between financial constraints and distress risk. Our results support the too-big-to-fall theory, the trade-off theory, the agency theory, and prior literature. This study examines the influence of investor attention and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) power on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) within Vietnamese family businesses. Unlike most of the past literature, this study further investigates the potential moderating effects of CEOs' power on the relationship between investor attention and CSR. Utilizing the dynamic system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), this study analyzes a dataset comprising 116 Vietnamese family businesses from 2005 to 2020. The findings reveal an inverted U-shape between CEO power and CSR within family businesses; meanwhile, investor attention demonstrates a negative impact on CSR. Moreover, the results report that CEO power is a moderating factor in the relationship between investor attention and CSR. These results are consistent with various theoretical frameworks, including agency theory, overinvestment, career concern, career horizon, and conflict-resolution hypotheses. This paper examines the moderating effect of competition on the relationship between financial leverage and firm performance in Vietnam. Using a dataset created out of 352 firms listed on Vietnam's stock exchanges in 2015-2019, this paper estimates both the leverage-performance relation and the dependence of this nexus on market competition. The two-step system generalised method of moments is used to tackle the endogeneity, unobserved heterogeneity, and autocorrelation problems in our model estimation. The findings reveal a negative leverage-performance nexus, and increased competition hurts this relationship. In highly competitive markets, debts become more expensive, thus leading to increased financial pressures on leveraged firms. The fiercer competition also creates a risky business environment, so leveraged firms may fail when operating inefficiently and failing to satisfy their debt obligations. Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) represents a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, posing a signiferant public health challenge. Health-care providers, the cornerstone of health-care delivery systems, are not exempt from this risk. Understanding their cardiovascular risk factor (CVRF) profile is crucial for promoting their health and well-being. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of various CVRFs among healthcare professionals working at a large private health institution in Vietnam. We sought to identify potential disparities in CVRF distribution across different occupational groups within the health-care workforce. Methods: Health-care staff members (n = 1314) were invited to participate in comprehensive health screenings. Self-reported questionnaires and standardized protocols were used to assess various CVRFs, including dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and smoking status. This investigation employed a cross-sectional study design. Data collection occurred during a single point in time (September 2023) at Vinmec Times City Hospital, a prominent private specialty hospital situated in Hanoi, Vietnam. Results: The study revealed a concerning prevalence of CVRFs among health-care providers. A significant proportion of participants displayed elevated levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, with service staff demonstrating the highest prevalence. A notable percentage of participants had high blood pressure (BP) and were overweight or obese. A gender disparity emerged, with males exhibiting higher systolic BP and body mass index compared to females. Conclusions: This study highlights a substantial burden of CVRFs among healthcare professionals in Vietnam, particularly within the service staff category. Targeted interventions aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle practices and CVD risk management strategies are necessary to safeguard the cardiovascular health of this crucial workforce. Returnee entrepreneurs are unique actors spanning between different environments. When coming back to their home countries to start new ventures, they inevitably face challenges in reconciling different logics from their home and host countries. The interplay of these different logics creates institutional complexity. This paper examines the interplay of multiple logics induced from home and host countries and the entrepreneurs' responses to this situation. Multiple in-depth interviews with returnee entrepreneurs in the information technology industry in Vietnam have revealed that the entrepreneurs configure market and innovation logics among three sets of practices, including product/market, internal capacity, and reactions to institutional constraints. Four strategic responses to institutional complexity, namely non-learner, adaptor, camouflager, and innovator were also identified. Furthermore, this study finds the entrepreneurs' strategic responses and their active influence on local institutions upon their return. Relevant implications and recommendations are also discussed. This paper sheds some light on the impact of regional trade agreements (RTAs) on international tourism demand in Vietnam. They are using gravity model with data from 29 countries with the highest number of tourists to Vietnam from 2007–2019. The empirical findings indicate a relevant degree of heterogeneity in the results. While the the free trade agreement enhances the international tourism demand in Vietnam, ASEAN community it. This study analyses the MAX anomaly in a frontier market before and during the Covid19 pandemic. Our sample has 39,673 firm-month observations of non-financial firms in Vietnam from 2008 to 2021. Using the Carhart four-factor model augmented with MAX anomaly, Fama-Macbeth two-step estimations, and portfolio analyses, we report the persistence of the MAX puzzle in Vietnam before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. The arbitrary returns between the highest and lowest MAX portfolios are around 1% per month. Finally, our results report that the MAX anomaly is subsumed by the IVOL anomaly, while the skewness fails to explain the MAX anomaly. This study examines the impacts of investor sentiment and liquidity on the idiosyncratic volatility (IVOL) anomaly returns in Vietnam before and during the COVID-19. We construct an internet search-based measure of sentiment (FEARS) from the Google Trends Search Volume Index of Vietnam's financial and economic search terms from December 2010 to December 2020. We employ Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS) regressions and univariate portfolio testing to examine the existence of IVOL anomaly in Vietnam after controlling for FEARS sentiment index and liquidity proxies. Our findings document the persistence of the IVOL anomaly in the Vietnam stock market before the pandemic. However, the IVOL anomaly disappears during the pandemic. In addition, increasing investor fear sentiment reduces stock returns during the pandemic. Our robustness tests indicate that the IVOL anomaly persists in the high FEARS, low FEARS, and high turnover subsample before the pandemic. Our results contribute new evidence of how the FEARS index and liquidity help explain the IVOL puzzle before and during the pandemic. Despite an expansion of production, pangasius farmers have experienced economic challenges in Vietnam. The aim of this study was to identify optimum economic alternatives for pangasius farmers. A single-stage stochastic frontier analysis was used to estimate the economic efficiency of pangasius farms and investigate the farm size–economic efficiency relationship using cross-sectional data collected on Vietnamese pangasius farms. The study found a nonlinear relationship between farm size and economic efficiency, with economic efficiency increasing until the farm area reached a threshold of 26.9 ha, then falling due to transaction and agency costs under asymmetric information. The farming experience of the decision-makers negatively affected efficiency. Similar to previous studies, we found feed and fingerling costs were essential input factors for farms. Based on these results, we recommend three strategies for improving the economic efficiency of farms are: providing timely market information to farmers; determining the optimal farming scale depending upon the specific farmer's available resources; and using a good quality of fingerlings and feed. A choice experiment (CE) with approximately 1000 respondents was designed and conducted to estimate economic benefits associated with air quality improvements in Hanoi City, the capital of Vietnam. In this CE application, different scenarios of air quality improvements were described based on reduction in morbidity and mortality risk, and increase in urban tree cover to elicit respondents' willingness-to-pay (WTP). To gain better understanding of the WTP estimates, the econometric analysis applied several models, including conditional logit models, a mixed logit model, a generalized multinomial logit model and a latent class model. The WTP for maximal improvements is about 0.16–1.88% of household income. Results of marginal WTP for reduction in morbidity and mortality risk suggest that the values of statistical illness relating to air pollution range from USD1,120 to USD8,280, and the values of statistical life fall between USD7,100 and 64,700. Based on marginal WTP for boosting urban tree cover, aggregate WTP estimated for Hanoi population is about USD18.6–124 million per year to achieve the tree cover level of 18m2 per capita. Given the budget limitation, the information on residents' WTP for improving air quality would be useful for policy makers to invest efficiently in controlling air pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A second cluster of COVID-19 cases imported from Europe occured in Vietnam from early March 2020. We describe 44 SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR positive patients (cycle threshold value <30) admitted to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi between March 6 and April 15 2020. Whole SARS-CoV-2 genomes from these patients were sequenced using Illumina Miseq and analysed for common genetic variants and relationships to local and globally circulating strains. Results showed that 32 cases were Vietnamese with a median age of 37 years (range 15–74 years), and 23 were male. Most cases were acquired outside Vietnam, mainly from the UK (n = 15), other European countries (n = 14), Russia (n = 6) and countries in Asia (n = 3). No cases had travelled from China. Forty-one cases had symptoms at admission, typically dry cough (n = 36), fever (n = 20), sore throat (n = 14) and diarrhoea (n = 12). Hospitalisation was long with a median of 25 days, most commonly from 20–29 days. All SARS-CoV-2 genomes were similar (92–100% sequence homology) to the reference sequence Wuhan_1 (NC_045512), and 32 strains belonged to the B.1.1 lineage. The three most common variants were linked, and included C3037T, C14408T (nsp12: P323L) and A23403G (S: D614G) mutations. This group of mutations often accompanied variant C241T (39/44 genomes) or GGG 28881..28883 AAC (33/44 genomes). The prevalence of the former reflected probable European origin of viruses, and the transition D614G was dominant in Vietnam. Aims: This study determined the prevalence and associated factors of decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in patients who had type 2 diabetes for at least 5 years.Methods: A cohort study was conducted in 467 outpatients in a community-based hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Serum creatinine were tested twice, at two occasions at least 3 months apart. The confirmatory eGFR was the average of the two eGFR of which the difference was ≤20%. The mean urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio was calculated from two consecutive early morning specimens.Results: Most patients were female with a mean age of 61.7 (8.0) years. Albuminuria was found in 40% of participants, and the prevalence of decreased eGFR was 7.5% (n=35). Individuals with declined eGFR were older (p<0.001), had duration of diabetes longer (p=0.025), higher systolic blood pressure (p=0.010) and higher acid uric level (p<0.001), increased albumin excretion (p=0.009), and more proliferative retinopathy (p=0.011) than those with non-declined eGFR.Conclusions: Although decreased eGFR in type 2 diabetes patients was not prevalent, the strategies to prevent the progressive decline of GFR should be done to prevent patients from progressing to advanced renal disease. We estimate whether a land reform program led to higher incomes for ethnic minority households. In 2002, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, Program 132 directed the transfer of farm land to ethnic minority households that had less than one hectare of land. Using the 2002 Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey as a baseline, in 2008 we resurveyed over one-thousand households to provide a retrospective evaluation of the impact of their participation in Program 132. Contrary to official reports, our findings show that there was considerable deviation from the planned program parameters: many eligible households did not receive land, while ineligible households often did. We estimate that beneficiaries of the program in the province of Kon Tum experienced increases of household income largely in line with what one would expect from a small plot of poor farm land. Outside Kon Tum, where participation rates were substantially lower, the story is more mixed, and household incomes did not improve with program participation. Overall, our results underscore the limitations of simple transfers of land as a mechanism for improving the living standards of ethnic minorities. Background There is an economic burden associated with hypertension both worldwide and in Vietnam. In Vietnam, patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure are hospitalized for further diagnosis and initiation of treatment. Because there is no evidence on costs of inpatient care for hypertensive patients available yet to inform policy makers, health insurance and hospitals, this study aims to quantify direct costs of inpatient care for these patients in Vietnam. Methods A retrospective study was conducted in a hospital in Vietnam. Direct costs were analyzed from the health-care provider's perspective. Hospital-based costing was performed using both bottom-up and micro-costing methods. Patients with sole essential or primary hypertension (ICD-code I10) and those comorbid with sphingolipid metabolism or other lipid storage disorders (ICD-code E75) were selected. Costs were quantified based on financial and other records of the hospital. Total cost per patient resulted from an aggregation of laboratory test costs, drug costs, inpatient-days' costs and other remaining costs, including appropriate allocation of overheads. Both mean and medians, as well as interquartile ranges (IQRs) were calculated. In addition to a base-case analysis, specific scenarios were analyzed. Results 230 patients were included in the study (147 cases with I10 code only and 83 cases with I10 combined with E75). Median length of hospital stay was 6 days. Median total direct costs per patient were US$65 (IQR: 37 -95). Total costs per patient were higher in the combined hypertensive and lipid population than in the sole hypertensive population at US$78 and US$53, respectively. In all scenarios, hospital inpatient days' costs were identified as the major cost driver in the total costs. Conclusions Costs of hospitalization of hypertensive patients is relatively high compared to annual medication treatment at a community health station for hypertension as well as to the total health expenditure per capita in Vietnam. Given that untreated/undetected hypertension likely leads to more expensive treatments of complications, these findings may justify investments by the Vietnamese health-care sector to control high blood pressure in order to save downstream health care budgets. Background: Ingestion of contaminated water or food is a major contributor to childhood diarrhea in developing countries. In Vietnam, the use of community-based information, education and communication (IEC) activities could be a sustainable strategy to improve food hygiene and food safety behaviors. This study thus examined the long-term impact of community-based IEC activities on food hygiene and food safety behaviors. Methods: In this longitudinal study, we interviewed caregivers of children aged between six months and four years in suburban Hanoi. Baseline data were collected in January 2006 (n = 125). After conducting IEC interventions, we collected a 1st set of evaluation data in January 2007 (n = 132). To examine the long-term impact of the interventions, we then collected a 2nd set of evaluation data in January 2008 (n = 185). Changes in childhood diarrhea prevalence, IEC coverage, and food hygiene and food safety behaviors were assessed over a two-year period using bivariate and logistic regression analyses. Effective IEC channels were determined through multiple linear regression analysis. Results: Childhood diarrhea was significantly reduced from 21.6% at baseline to 7.6% at the 1st post-intervention evaluation (P = 0.002), and to 5.9% at the 2nd evaluation. Among 17 food hygiene and food safety behaviors measured, a total of 11 behaviors were improved or maintained by the 2nd evaluation. Handwashing after toilet use was significantly improved at both evaluation points. Overall, 3 food safety behaviors and 7 food hygiene behaviors were found to have significantly improved at the 1st and at the 2nd evaluations, respectively. Flip chart communication administered by community groups was identified to be the most effective IEC channel for effecting behavior change (P = 0.018). Conclusions: Flip chart communication administered by community groups is effective for improving multiple food hygiene and food safety behaviors in sustainable ways, and should be included in water and health promotion programs. Abstract: Objectives: To perform a cost-effectiveness analysis and to identify the cost-effectiveness affordability levels for a newborn universal vaccination program against hepatitis B virus (HBV) in Vietnam. Methods: By using a Markov model, we simulated a Vietnamese birth cohort using 1,639,000 newborns in 2002 and estimated the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios for quality-adjusted life-year gained following universal newborn HBV vaccination. Two types of analyses were performed, including and excluding expenditures on the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and its complications. We used Monte Carlo simulations to examine cost-effectiveness acceptability and affordability from the payer''s perspective and constructed a cost-effectiveness affordability curve to assess the costs and health effects of the program. Results: In the base-case analysis, newborn universal HBV vaccination reduced the carrier rate by 58% at a cost of US $42 per carrier averted. From the payer''s perspective, incremental cost-effectiveness ratio per quality-adjusted life-year gained was US $3.77, much lower than the 2002 per-capita gross domestic product of US $440. Vaccination could potentially be affordable starting at a US $2.1 million budget. At the cost-effectiveness threshold of US $3.77 per quality-adjusted life-year and an annual budget of US $5.9 million, the probability that vaccination will be both cost-effective and affordable was 21%. Conclusions: Universal newborn HBV vaccination is highly cost-effective in Vietnam. In low-income, high-endemic countries, where funds are limited and the economic results are uncertain, our findings on the cost-effectiveness affordability options may assist decision makers in proper health investments. In North Vietnam, during winter, shortage of herbage constrains the profitability of dairy farming. The first objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of alternative temperate (C3) forage species, namely common oat ( Avena sativa L.), lop-sided oat ( Avena strigosa Schreb.), Italian ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum L.) and a commercial forage mixture (Avex), to address the shortage of herbage during winter in the mountain regions of North Vietnam. The second objective was to measure the effects of cultural practices (sowing rate, harvest interval and irrigation level) on yield of dry matter (DM), chemical composition, digestibility of DM and metabolizable energy (ME) concentration of herbage from the best adapted C3 species previously tested (lop-sided oat). Four experiments were conducted. Oat species proved to be the best adapted species and produced the highest annual yield of herbage (7600 kg DM ha−1) with a high nutritive value. Yields of DM of lop-sided oat were not affected by sowing rate of seed but increased as the length of harvest intervals increased from 30 to 45 and 60 d ( P < 0·001). Crude protein concentration, digestibility of DM and ME concentration decreased as the harvest interval increased ( P < 0·01). Irrigation increased the yields of DM of lop-sided oats by 1·3 ( P < 0·05) but had no effect on the nutritive value of herbage. It is concluded that both common oat and lop-sided oat are suitable species to provide herbage in the winter for the mountain regions of North Vietnam. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study that investigates the herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV-2) seropositivity and associated risk factors among women in Vietnam. Cross sectional study with personal interviews and gynecological examination were used in the study in which ever married women samples aged 15 to 69 from Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and Hanoi participated. The result shows that HSV-2 is more prevalent in women from HCMC than those from Hanoi.

This study investigated the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels with rapid decline of the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in type 2 diabetes (T2 DM) patients. A prospective cohort study was conducted in a community-based hospital in Vietnam. We followed 405 T2DM patients with normal kidney function for five years. Rapid progression of kidney function was defined as an average annual decrease of eGFR of at least 4 mL/min/1.73 m2 and was found in 16.0% of patients. Patients in the SUA high tertile (≥6 mg/dL) had higher BMI (p = 0.004), lower HbA1c (p = 0.001), lower eGFR (p < 0.001) and higher rate of hypertension than low and middle tertile. After adjusting for age and sex, rapid progression of renal function was significantly associated with SUA level (OR = 1.22, 95% CI 1.02–1.45, p = 0.026). This association was marginally significant when more covariates were included in the model (OR = 1.20, 95% CI 0.99–1.46, p = 0.065). However, the association between tertiles of SUA and rapid decline of eGFR was not statistically significant. This study demonstrates neither a strong significant association between SUA and rapid decline of eGFR nor evidence to refuse the role of SUA levels in the increased risk of renal function decline in in T2DM patients. Vibriosis in farmed animals is a serious threat to aquaculture worldwide. Using probiotics and anti-Vibrio antimicrobial substances in aquaculture systems can be a means of preventing Vibrio infections. Therefore, we aimed to characterize and compare 16 potential anti-Vibrio probiotics (Vi+) isolated from marine sponges and fish intestines collected from the Vietnam Sea, as well as an anti-Vibrio bacteriocin to fully explore their application potentials. 16S rRNA sequencing confirmed all Vi+ to be Bacillus species with different strain variants across two sample types. An obvious antimicrobial spectrum toward Gram-negative bacteria was observed from intestinal Vi+ compared to sponge-associated Vi+. The reason was the higher gene frequency of two antimicrobial compounds, non-ribosomal peptides (NRPS) and polyketide type-I (PKS-I) from intestinal Vi+ (66.7%) than sponge-associated Vi+ (14.3% and 0%, respectively). Additionally, a three-step procedure was performed to purify an anti-Vibrio bacteriocin produced by B. methylotrophicus NTBD1, including (i) solvent extraction of bacteriocin from cells, (ii) hydrophobic interaction chromatography, and (iii) reverse-phase HPLC. The bacteriocin had a molecular weight of ~2–5 kDa, was sensitive to proteolysis and thermally stable, and showed a broad antimicrobial spectrum, all of which are essential properties for promising feed additives. This study provides necessary information of the potential of probiotic Bacillus species with anti-Vibrio antimicrobial properties to study their further use in sustainable aquaculture. Some candidates of a new circulating recombinant form (CRF) of HIV-1 were found in northern Vietnam in our previous study. We succeeded in near full-length sequencing using MinION with plasma samples from 12 people living with HIV. Three of the samples were CRF109&#95;0107, which was recently reported in China. Three others were the newly identified CRF127&#95;07109, while six of them were considered to be CRF127&#95;07109-related unique recombinant forms (URFs). The time to the most recent common ancestor of CRF127&#95;07109 was estimated to be between 2015 and 2019. Our findings showed that CRF127&#95;07109 and related URFs were generated recently in northern Vietnam, rather than migrated independently to northern Vietnam.

Liver injury with marked elevation of aspartate aminotransferase enzyme (AST) is commonly observed in dengue infection. To understand the pathogenesis of this liver damage, we compared the plasma levels of hepatic specific, centrilobular predominant enzymes (glutamate dehydrogenase, GLDH; glutathione S transferase-α, αGST), periportal enriched 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD), periportal predominant arginase-1 (ARG-1), and other non-specific biomarkers (paraoxonase-1, PON-1) in patients with different outcomes of dengue infection. This hospital-based study enrolled 87 adult dengue patients, stratified into three groups based on plasma AST levels (< 80, 80-400, > 400 U/L) in a 1:1:1 ratio (n = 40, n = 40, n = 40, respectively. The new liver enzymes in the blood samples from the 4th to 6th days of their illness were measured by commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or colorimetric kits. Based on the diagnosis at discharge days, our patients were classified as 40 (46%) dengue without warning signs (D), 35 (40.2%) dengue with warning signs (DWS), and 11 (12.6%) severe dengue (SD) with either shock (two patients) or AST level over 1000 U/L (nine patients), using the 2009 WHO classification. The group of high AST (> 400 U/L) also had higher ALT, GLDH, ARG-1, and HPPD than the other groups, while the high (> 400 U/L) and moderate (80-400 U/L) AST groups had higher ALT, αGST, ARG-1, and HPPD than the low AST group (< 80 U/L). There was a good correlation between AST, alanine aminotransferase enzyme (ALT), and the new liver biomarkers such as GLDH, αGST, ARG-1, and HPPD. Our findings suggest that dengue-induced liver damage initiates predominantly in the centrilobular area toward the portal area during the dengue progression. Objective: SEANUTS II Vietnam aims to obtain an in-depth understanding of the nutritional status and nutrient intake of children between 0·5 and 11·9 years old., Design: Cross-sectional survey., Setting: A multistage cluster systematic random sampling method was implemented in different regions in Vietnam: North Mountainous, Central Highlands, Red River Delta, North Central and Coastal Area, Southeast and Mekong River Delta., Participants: 4001 children between 6 months and 11·9 years of age., Results: The prevalence of stunting and underweight was higher in rural than in urban children, whereas overweight and obese rates were higher in urban areas. 12·0 % of the children had anaemia and especially children 0·5–1 year old were affected (38·6 %). Low serum retinol was found in 6·2 % of children ≥ 4 years old. The prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency was 31·1 % while 60·8 % had low serum Zn. For nutrient intake, overall, 80·1 % of the children did not meet the estimated energy requirements. For Ca intake, ∼60 % of the younger children did not meet the RNI while it was 92·6 % in children >7 years old. For vitamin D intake, 95·0 % of the children did not meet recommended nutrient intakes., Conclusions: SEANUTS II Vietnam indicated that overnutrition was more prevalent than undernutrition in urban areas, while undernutrition was found more in rural areas. The high prevalence of low serum Zn, vitamin D insufficiency and the inadequate intakes of Ca and vitamin D are of concern. Nutrition strategies for Vietnamese children should consider three sides of malnutrition and focus on approaches for the prevention of malnutrition.

Objectives: Vietnam is one of the countries in highly endemic areas of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in the world. Our study aims to determine the prevalence of HBV infection among different age groups of workers who had been included for annual general health checkups., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Health Screening Department, University Medical Center at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, using anonymous data from employees who had health checkups from June 2017 to June 2018., Results: A total of 5727 subjects were included, with an overall HBV prevalence of 9.0%. The prevalence of HBV infection was significantly higher in men and lowest in the age groups of 18-30. In multivariable analysis, the variables that were independently associated with HBV infection were male gender (Odd ratio (OR), 2.03; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.58-2.60; p  < 0.001), older than 30 years old (age group of 31-40: OR 1.7; 95% CI, 1.33-2.18; p  < 0.001; of 41-50, OR 1.82; 95% CI, 1.37-2.43; p  < 0.001); high total cholesterol (OR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.64-0.94; p  = 0.011), high triglyceride (OR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.42-0.65; p  < 0.001), and having significant fibrosis (OR, 2.7; 95% CI 1.85-3,95; p  < 0.001)., Conclusions: The prevalence of HBV infection among employees on health assessments is still high (9%), even in the age group under 30 (7%). Male, age group older than 30, and significant liver fibrosis were the factors related to HBV infection. High cholesterol and level triglyceride were protective factors against HBV infection.

Background: Chronic hepatitis B virus (CHB) infection is a major health problem and leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. Several point and deletion mutations on the PreS/S gene have been intensively considered associated with HCC. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of HBV PreS/S mutations in Vietnamese CHB-infected patients and their association with HCC., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from 02/2020 to 03/2021, recruited Vietnamese CHB-infected patients with HBV-DNA >3 log10-copies/mL and successful PreS/S gene sequencing. Mutations were detected by direct Sanger sequencing., Results: 247 CHB-infected patients were recruited, characterized by 68.8% males, 54.7% HBV genotype B, 57.5% HBeAg positive, 23.1% fibrosis score ≥F3 and 19.8% HCC. 61.8% amino acid replacements were detected throughout the PreS1/PreS2/S genes. The most common point-mutations included N/H51Y/T/S/Q/P (30.4%), V68T/S/I (44.9%), T/N87S/T/P (46.2%) on PreS1 gene; T125S/N/P (30.8%), I150T (42.5%) on PreS2 gene; S53L (37.7%), A184V/G (39.3%), S210K/N/R/S (39.3%) on S gene. The rates of case(s) with any point-mutation on the Major Hydrophylic Region (MHR) and the "a" determinant region were 63.6% and 39.7%, respectively. Most of S point-mutations were presented with low rates such as T47A/E/V/K (9.3%), P120S/T (8.5%), G145R (2%). On multivariable analysis, males (OR = 4.51, 95%CI 1.78-11.4, p = 0.001), age≥40 (OR = 5.5, 95%CI 2.06-14.68, p = 0.001), W4P/R/Y on PreS1 (OR = 11.56, 95%CI 1.99-67.05, p = 0.006) and 4 S point-mutations as: T47A/E/V/K (OR = 3.67, 95%CI 1.19-11.29, p = 0.023), P120S/T (OR = 3.38, 95%CI 1.09-10.49, p = 0.035), S174N (OR = 29.73, 95%CI 2.12-417.07, p = 0.012), P203R (OR = 8.45, 95%CI 1.43-50.06, p = 0.019) were associated with HCC., Conclusions: We detected 61% amino acid changes on PreS/S regions in Vietnamese CHB patients. One point-mutation at amino acid 4 on PreS1 gene and 4 point-mutations at amino acids 47, 120, 174, and 203 on S gene were associated with HCC. Further investigations are recommended to further clarify the relationship and interaction between mutations in HBV genome and HCC progression., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Introduction: We evaluated the impact of the lockdown policy during the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular outpatients of a cardiology clinic in Vietnam from April to June 2020. We estimated the occurrence of different cardiovascular problems in general and the stability of blood pressure., Methodology: During the Covid-19 outbreak in Vietnam, we conducted a cross-sectional study to evaluate its impact on blood pressure stability of hypertensive patients treated as outpatients at the clinic of the University Medical Center (UMC), Ho Chi Minh City., Results: The mean age of the recruited 493 patients was 62.2 ± 10.2 years. The stable blood pressure group consisted of 87% patients, while the unstable blood pressure group consisted of 13% patients. We found that 68% of the study population attended their follow-up appointments as scheduled: 87% with stable blood pressure versus only 13% with unstable blood pressure. Significant differences were noticed in body weight changes and cardiovascular problems between the two groups: body weight increase (22.6% vs. 10.2%), body weight decrease (3.2% vs. 6.7%), worsening of cardiovascular problems (35.5% vs. 17.9%) in the unstable and stable blood pressure groups, respectively. Knowledge of adult dengue virus (DENV) infection from Hanoi, Vietnam, is limited. In 2008, we prospectively studied 143 (77 male) confirmed (nonstructural 1 antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA], DENV polymerase chain reaction, paired serology) adult dengue patients of median age 23.5 (range 16-72) years. They were admitted to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Hanoi, on median illness day (D) 5 (range 1-8). By D8, 141 (98.6%) were afebrile. Platelet counts and hematocrit (median, interquartile range [IQR]) nadired and peaked on D5 and D4, respectively: 40,000/μL (10,000-109,000/μL), 43.4% (34.9-49.7%). Four (2.8%) patients had severe dengue: 1) D10 shock (N = 1) and 2) aspartate aminotransferase (AST) ≥ 1,000 IU/L (N = 3, D5 and D7). Of 143 patients, 118 (82.5%) had ≥ 1 warning sign (World Health Organization [WHO] 2009 criteria): mucosal bleeding 66/143 (46.1%), soft tissue edema 54/143 (37.7%), and ultrasound detected plasma leakage (pleural effusions/ascites) 30/129 (23.25%). 138 (96.5%) patients received intravenous (IV) fluids: 3 L (IQR: 0.5-8.5 L). Most patients had non-severe dengue with warning signs. High rates of edema and plasma leakage may be explained partly by liberal use of IV fluids. Objectives: To determine prospectively the causative pathogens of central nervous system (CNS) infections in patients admitted to a tertiary referral hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam., Methods: From May 2007 to December 2008, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 352 adults with suspected meningitis or encephalitis underwent routine testing, staining (Gram, Ziehl-Nielsen, India ink), bacterial culture and polymerase chain reaction targeting Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. suis, Haemophilus influenzae type b, Herpes simplex virus (HSV), Varicella Zoster virus (VZV), enterovirus, and 16S ribosomal RNA. Blood cultures and clinically indicated radiology were also performed. Patients were classified as having confirmed or suspected bacterial (BM), tuberculous (TBM), cryptococcal (CRM), eosinophilic (EOM) meningitis, aseptic encephalitis/meningitis (AEM), neurocysticercosis and others., Results: 352 (male: 66%) patients were recruited: median age 34 years (range 13-85). 95/352 (27.3%) diagnoses were laboratory confirmed and one by cranial radiology: BM (n = 62), TBM (n = 9), AEM (n = 19), CRM (n = 5), and neurocysticercosis (n = 1, cranial radiology). S. suis predominated as the cause of BM [48/62 (77.4%)]; Listeria monocytogenese (n = 1), S. pasteurianus (n = 1) and N. meningitidis (n = 2) were infrequent. AEM viruses were: HSV (n = 12), VZV (n = 5) and enterovirus (n = 2). 5 patients had EOM. Of 262/352 (74.4%) patients with full clinical data, 209 (79.8%) were hospital referrals and 186 (71%) had been on antimicrobials. 21 (8%) patients died: TBM (15.2%), AEM (10%), and BM (2.8%)., Conclusions: Most infections lacked microbiological confirmation. S. suis was the most common cause of BM in this setting. Improved diagnostics are needed for meningoencephalitic syndromes to inform treatment and prevention strategies.

Background: Few studies have been conducted in Vietnam on the epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections or antimicrobial use. Thus, we sought to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for surgical-site infections (SSIs) and to document antimicrobial use in surgical patients in a large healthcare facility in Vietnam., Methods: We conducted a point-prevalence survey of SSIs and antimicrobial use at Cho Ray Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, a 1,250-bed inpatient facility. All patients on the 11 surgical wards and 2 intensive care units who had surgery within 30 days before the survey date were included., Results: Of 391 surgical patients, 56 (14.3%) had an SSI. When we compared patients with and without SSIs, factors associated with infection included trauma (relative risk [RR], 2.65; 95% confidence interval [CI95], 1.60 to 4.37; P < .001), emergency surgery (RR, 2.74; CI95, 1.65 to 4.55; P < .001), and dirty wounds (RR, 3.77; CI95, 2.39 to 5.96; P < .001). Overall, 198 (51%) of the patients received antimicrobials more than 8 hours before surgery and 390 (99.7%) received them after surgery. Commonly used antimicrobials included third-generation cephalosporins and aminoglycosides. Thirty isolates were identified from 26 SSI patient cultures; of the 25 isolates undergoing antimicrobial susceptibility testing, 22 (88%) were resistant to ceftriaxone and 24 (92%) to gentamicin., Conclusions: Our data show that (1) SSIs are prevalent at Cho Ray Hospital; (2) antimicrobial use among surgical patients is widespread and inconsistent with published guidelines; and (3) pathogens often are resistant to commonly used antimicrobials. SSI prevention interventions, including appropriate use of antimicrobials, are needed in this population.
