Vegetation classifications are a valuable tool for guiding management decisions. Vegetation can be classified at different levels of resolution for different purposes. Aggregating finer‐resolution classification units to simplify planning and decision‐making is becoming more common in land management. However, little is known about which resolution or scale of aggregation is appropriate for specific land management practices and the factors to consider when aggregating vegetation classification units. There is a risk that aggregated classification units may overlook vital floristic and structural differences between communities and not accurately represent the patterns of variation in vegetation. This may lead to unanticipated adverse outcomes from management actions. We compared three classification systems to test how well each represented patterns of variation in the vegetation of a semi‐arid region in Victoria, Australia: (a) a finer‐level classification system; (b) a coarser‐resolution system that aggregated finer compositional resolution units for fire management purposes; and (c) a coarser‐resolution classification based on Climate Zones. We conducted floristic and vegetation structure surveys at 249 sites stratified across a climate gradient. Sites were assigned to vegetation classifications based on mapped data layers and checked by ground truthing prior to inclusion. The classification based on a finer compositional resolution best represented variation in both the floristic and structural patterns of the vegetation across this region. This was not unexpected, because accuracy is traded‐off against simplicity when aggregating vegetation classification units. However, the aggregated classification also performed poorly in representing patterns of vegetation when compared with a simple scheme based on Climate Zones. Assessing the adequacy of aggregated vegetation classification units is important, yet often overlooked. To be effective, aggregated vegetation classes must reflect the underlying factors that drive patterns of variation in the vegetation to ensure they support intended management outcomes. This study investigated habitat characteristics that have been postulated to influence the occurrence of noisy miners ( Manorina melanocephala Family Meliphagidae). It builds on an earlier study that identified corners along remnant edges as important predictors of the presence of noisy miners in large blocks of remnant vegetation (>300 ha). Six habitat characteristics were recorded at 39 corner sites within the box-ironbark region of Victoria. We failed to detect any significant effect of the density of understorey vegetation on the likelihood of noisy miners occupying a site, but this might have been an artefact of prolonged drought conditions. The most powerful predictors of the presence of noisy miners at remnant corners were found to be soil type and the proportion of canopy trees at a site that were yellow gum ( Eucalyptus leucoxylon), with noisy miners being associated with deeper, more fertile soils and higher proportions of yellow gums present. As yellow gum is a prolific and reliable nectar producer, the inherent productivity of a site might be more important in determining the attractiveness of a site to noisy miners than structural attributes like the presence or absence of an understorey. Noisy miners are sedentary colonial birds that occupy year-round territories, often at high densities. Sites capable of supporting such high density occupation year-round might be limited to the most productive sites within the landscape. This productivity hypothesis has potentially profound implications for other woodland avifauna, as noisy miners might be excluding other woodland birds from some of the most fertile components of the landscape; components that are already rare in the box-ironbark region due preferential clearing for agriculture at the time of settlement. Abstract: The social organization of the sexually dimorphic and dichromatic Crescent Honeyeater Phylidonyris pyrrhoptera (Latham 1801) was studied at Wilsons Promontory National Park between January 1994 and January 1997. All breeding attempts at one site were followed during the spring and summer of 1996. Most pairs were multibrooded, with pair-bonds maintained throughout the study. Breeding males held well-defined territories. Females, although generally restricting their activities to within their mate’s territory, visited other males’ territories more frequently than did their mates and did so close to the time of egg laying. Males aggressively chased intruding males, but appeared to permit intrusions by non-mate females. Circumstantial evidence suggests some males may kill neighbour’s nestlings. Female Crescent Honeyeaters are solely responsible for nest construction and incubation. While both sexes attended nestlings, males contributed to parental care significantly less than females. Males also provided significantly less parental care than has been reported for monomorphic species of honeyeater. Single syllable calls are given throughout the year. Peaks in the rate of double and multisyllable calls corresponded with peaks in breeding activity. Only males were observed uttering loud multisyllable calls. In contrast to predictions arising from sexual selection theory and observations of the mating system of sexually dimorphic hummingbirds, the population of Crescent Honeyeaters studied exhibited a socially monogamous mating system. However, the very limited male role in parental care and non-observance of male territory boundaries by females suggest the genetic mating system may not be one of monogamy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prescribed burning to achieve management objectives is a common practice in fire-prone regions worldwide. Structural components of habitat that are combustible and slow to develop are particularly susceptible to change associated with prescribed burning. We used an experimental, "whole-landscape" approach to investigate the effect of differing patterns of prescribed burning on key habitat components (logs, stumps, dead trees, litter cover, litter depth, and understorey vegetation). Twenty-two landscapes (each ~100 ha) were selected in a dry forest ecosystem in southeast Australia. Experimental burns were conducted in 16 landscapes (stratified by burn extent) while six served as untreated controls. We measured habitat components prior to and after burning. Landscape burn extent ranged from 22% to 89% across the 16 burn treatments. With the exception of dead standing trees (no change), all measures of habitat components declined as a consequence of burning. The degree of loss increased as the extent to which a landscape was burned also increased. Prescribed burning had complex effects on the spatial heterogeneity (beta diversity) of structural components within landscapes. Landscapes that were more heterogeneous pre-fire were homogenized by burning, while those that were more homogenous pre-fire tended to display greater differentiation post-burning. Thus, the notion that patch mosaic burning enhances heterogeneity at the landscape-scale depends on prior conditions. These findings have important management implications. Where prescribed burns must be undertaken, effects on important resources can be moderated via control of burn characteristics (e.g., burn extent). Longer-term impacts of prescribed burning will be strongly influenced by the return interval, given the slow rate at which some structural components accumulate (decades to centuries). Management of habitat structural components is important given the critical role they play in (1) provision of habitat resources for diverse organisms, (2) retention of moisture and nutrients in otherwise dry, low-productivity systems, and (3) carbon storage., (© 2016 by the Ecological Society of America.)
