This article profiles Professor Louis Goldberg. Goldberg died peacefully on October 18, 1997, aged 89 years. In the few weeks before his death, Goldberg had become more frail, but, even then, he continued to work diligently at his beloved academic discipline: accounting. He was born on 22 February 1908, the youngest of six Sons of Jewish parents, originally from Poland and Lithuania. After attending Coburg and University High Schools in Melbourne, he enrolled in the Faculty of Commerce at the University of Melbourne in 1926, the Faculty's second year of operations. Graduating in 1930, he was a research scholar in 1931-32 during which time he commenced part-time tutoring at the University of Melbourne. His broader involvement with the accounting profession saw him serving as a Victorian divisional councilor of the Australian Society of Accountants during 1958-65. He was a Society representative on the Accounting and Auditing Research Committee of the Accounting Research Foundation during 1965-73, participating in the evolution of the modem Australian Accounting Research Foundation. Goldberg's approximately 200 publications covering the period 1935-97, encompass financial accounting theory, accounting history and accounting education.
