We report a previously healthy case of 56 years old male patient from Punto Fijo, Paraguana peninsula, Falcon state, Venezuela. He was diagnosed with eosinophilic duodenitis due to Strongyloides stercoralis (Nematoda: Rhabditida) infection after presenting a sudden abdominal pain and diarrhea with intense peripheral eosinophilia (62-72%). Parasitological diagnosis was carried out by a serial coproscopic analysis (direct and Kato-Katz), recovering larvae techniques (Harada-Mori and method with sand) and inmunohistochemistry analysis, and eosinophilic duodenitis by means of biopsies (inmunohistochemistry). The abdominal angiostrongiliasis, is caused by the nematode Angiostrongylus costaricensis. Recent studies have shown that the infected hosts are found in tropical areas and its prevalence and incidence in Latin America is unknown. In Venezuela there is a report of one case reported in an adult. We present the first case of abdominal angiostrongiliasis observed in a child in Venezuela. He was a 9 years old male school boy, coming from the countryside, with a midabdomen abdominal mass extended to his right lank, he showed leukocytosis with 34% eosinofilia. Exploratory laparotomy was performed and tumor histopathological examination revealed in the mesentery several eosinophilic granulomatous lesions surrounding eggs and larvae of Angiostrongylus costaricensis. Given the size of the lesion 400 mg/day albendazole was administered for seven days after total excision of the tumor. As this disease can not be clinically diagnosed, the histopathological examination of the abdominal mass is the accurate procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
