In 1622, a counter-reformist concept of the mission led to the foundation of Propaganda Fide, a congregation to which the Supreme Pontiffs entrusted various tasks at the global level, including the reassertion of the pope's authority over missionary activities, which had previously been dominated by European secular powers using the patronage system. In carrying out its mandate, the new Congregation also charged apostolic nuncios, almost entirely Italian, with collecting information from and establishing direct contacts with the states of Catholic Christianity and of missionary territories beyond. These nuncios not only performed activities of a religious nature but also served as diplomats and representatives of the pope, endowed with particular powers and faculties. This article introduces the role of apostolic nuncios and analyzes the results of the first of these sent by the Propaganda Fide to China, Charles Thomas Maillard de Tournon. It will show that, as the first papal legate to China, he was not entirely successful in his objectives, but his mission can be seen as a turning point in the history of relations between the Holy See and China and as an important episode which helps us to understand not only early Sino–papal relations but also the development of the new global vision of the Catholic Church as it was formulated by the Propaganda Fide. In 1239, the convert Nicholas Donin submitted thirty-five articles against the Talmud to Pope Gregory IX. As a result, Christendom became aware of how Jews observed an oral law that was allegedly plagued with folly, blasphemy, and heresy. This triggered the infamous trial against the Talmud and resulted in the production of several Latin translations of rabbinical texts, including the compilation of the Extractiones de Talmud (1245). The present article mainly focusses on a short text taken from the manuscript Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, MS Vat. lat. 822 (folios 204ra–205ra), which includes a series of Talmudic passages that derive from texts which emerged from the Paris Disputation against the Talmud (1240–1245). From it, we are able to infer new information regarding the genesis of subsequent anti-Jewish works, including the Errores Iudaeorum by Thibaud de Sézanne and Passau Anonymous anti-Jewish sections. The presented study The Holy See on the Threshold of the World War I in 1914 deals with the situation and attitude of the Holy See before World War I and shortly after its beginning. It reflects not only its internal changes before the conflict but also reflects on its presence in international relations at the beginning of the 20th century, in relation to the countries of the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. It explains the position of the Holy See, analyzes the first reactions of Catholic head Pius X and, from the end of the summer of 1914, his successor Benedict XV on war operations. The involvement of the Holy See is understandable primarily because the war threatened the international position of the Catholic Church and its administration by making the contact of the Holy See with individual national churches more complicated while many acts were postponed in view of the ongoing world conflict. The material, spiritual and political conditions of the priests in individual dioceses deteriorated, as did the contact of the Holy See with them. The Pope's situation was all the more complicated because none of his predecessors was in a similar international situation of a war conflict of a global nature. The text is based on both published documents of an official nature and sources from the Austrian and Vatican archives which it confronts with numerous literature, especially of foreign provenance. This article seeks to debunk a conspiracy theory regarding the origins of the German playwright Rolf Hochhuth's incendiary play from 1963, The Deputy, which denounced Pope Pius XII for his alleged silence about German crimes in the Holocaust. According to these conspiracy theories, this play's success was the result of a masterstroke by Soviet intelligence, which had infiltrated the Vatican and stolen documents from the Vatican archives. By examining letters and correspondence pertaining to the play's origins, including its original drafts, this article argues that this conspiracy theory is chronologically implausible. This article aims at analysing and commenting the approach and position of Pope Francis and the Holy See in the issue of Russia's war against Ukraine (2014--) since the full-scale invasion of 2022. Statements and gestures of the Pope that joined Russia and Ukraine together, were often received negatively in Ukraine. The encyclical Fratelli tutti, Vatican neutrality and Ostpolitik raised questions concerning peace ethics and reconciliation. The article presents guiding principles and ideas of the Catholic Church leadership on these issues and shows that there is a demand for active involvement of the Ukrainian side in the discussion process. The article analyzes the attitude of Fyodor Dostoevsky toward the Roman Catholic Church. The author shows how Dostoevsky comes to the Slavophile idea of unity and the impossibility of salvation outside church communion, while speaking of the Church as an ecclesia, that is, an assembly of believers. At the same time, the reception of Dostoevsky from the side of the Vatican is presented. In the article, special attention is paid to the perception of Dostoevsky's ideas by Pope Francis. The author notes that the point of attraction and repulsion between Dostoevsky and Catholic culture lies in the plane of his understanding of the concepts of nationality and universality. Dostoevsky's Russian idea and his view on the essence of Christianity grows from the synthesis of these concepts. Over the last few years, Italy has occupied a relatively marginal position with respect to the jihadist threat. Nonetheless, the propaganda of the Islamic State mentions Italy and the bordering Vatican with a seemingly disproportionate frequency. This article presents an in-depth analysis of all textual references in Dabiq and Rumiyah, the flagship magazines of this sophisticated jihadist organization. Overall, several mentions concern "Rome," intended as a symbol for the West and Christianity and with a number of other meanings. Giovanni Pico della Mirandola had his 900 Conclusions printed late in 1486, just a few weeks before Pope Innocent VIII attacked thirteen of them.Did Pico intend to provoke the Vatican? If not, what was his aim, what were hismeans and what was the product? The Conclusions looks like a miscellany, just as Pico described it. But disorder was only on the surface, in line with a purpose explicitly stated: keeping the holiest truths hidden. Pico's informants about esoteric wisdom included more than two dozen authorities--some named as individuals, others unnamed, some ancient, others medieval--listed in the first of two parts of the Conclusions. The study deals with the comparison of the attitudes of the two highest representatives of the Catholic Church, Popes Benedict XV and Pius XII, at the beginning of the World Wars I and II. It reflects their relationship with the great powers and their representatives, diplomatic, political, peace and charitable activities, changes in the Roman Curia and the personalities of the pontiffs in the contemporary political-religious context of that time. The text represents a controversy with the public opinion that the Holy See remained passive during the world conflicts of the 20th century at the same time showing that the attitudes of the two pontiffs were largely similar. The following article analyzes the power structures within the Catholic Church from a sociological and historical perspective, especially the power of the Curia in relation to the various national bishops' conferences and individual dioceses, but also in relation to the Pope, as it developed above all from the 19th century to have. Unlike the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, it is the Roman Curia, not the College of Bishops, that holds the real power in its hands. The bishops appear before the competent Vatican authorities more as supplicants than as confreres. The Curia is not even well organized internally. There are often no clear boundaries between competencies and no regular cabinet meetings between the heads of authorities. While one has long since learned in the secular area to use systems of separation of powers and mutual control in order to remain capable of learning as an organization, the Roman Church apparently believes that it can do without such „checks and balances“. As the sacred aura of the papacy fades, the institutional character of the church becomes more and more conscious, and in many ways it contradicts generally accepted socio-ethical principles such as the rule of law, subsidiarity, the participation of those concerned and administrative control. It looks as if the largest religious community in the world is ruled by a small group of old men who shirk human responsibility in the name of God and demand unconditional obedience from the bishops, priests and believers of the universal Church for their decisions, regardless of theirs Reasons and their plausibility on site. The article analyzes the emerging ecclesiology of Pope Francis that revives the teaching of the Vatican Council II and opens a new phase in the reception of Vatican II’s vision of the Church. The introductory part briefly outlines the kerygmatic feature of Pope Francis’s theology, which is in the background of his speech about the Church. The starting point of the second and central part of the article is the phrase “the Church that goes forth”, which represents the hermeneutic key of the Pope’s understanding of the Church. We highlight his reflections about the essence and mission of the Church, such as the missionary transformation of the Church, synodality and polycentric understanding of the Church, Church as a mother and healer, Church and the world. Finally, in the spirit of the Church that goes forth, we elaborate on a ‘Samaritan Church’, a Church as a ‘filed hospital’, characterized by charity, a commitment to the poor, a sense for the periphery and human brotherhood, promoting a culture of encounter and dialogue. The third part of the article focuses on the Pope’s call to holiness and to the realization of Christian spirituality, which internally revives and encourages the missionary transformation of the Church. Research has shown that Pope Francis aims to restore today’s Church in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. The doctrinal part of his teaching about the Church comes to life in pastoral practice. Pope Francis advocates the Church as a strong moral authority in society and the world. It is a parricidal Church that decisively bears witness, speaks freely and boldly, opens spaces for encounter and authentic dialogue, and knows how to listen and accept criticism. Tlie article aims at elaborating facts in the last decades of the seventeenth century depending on three correspondences between the Pope of the Vatican with two heads of the Christian Conununity in the East. The first manuscript is written in Syriac by the Patriarch of the Chaldean Church, announcing his doctrine to the Pope. The other two are written in Arabic by the Metropolitan of the East or the Syriac Catholic Metropolitan, a branch from the Syrian Orthodox church emphasizing on his credibility and loyalty, asking the Pope for his blessings and educational materials. The paper explores the policies of the Holy See with regard to the Hungarian church during the pontificate of Pope Innocent XII (1691-1700). In the course of the Great Turkish War (1683-1699) important territories of the Hungarian Kingdom had been liberated from Ottoman rule, and the bishoprics and other ecclesiastical institutions started to reorganise themselves there. Yet the filling of church benefices constituted a constant bone of contention between the Apostolic See and the Habsburg Court of Vienna on account of the traditional right of patronage (ius patronatus) of the Hungarian kings, and the internal disputes between the newly reorganised bishoprics were also brought to Rome. A particularly sensitive area in this respect was the situation of the Protestant Principality of Transylvania, now under Habsburg rule, where the Viennese court aimed at strengthening the Catholic Church. A special episode of the period was, in the context of the development of general European politics, the attempt by the Habsburg court to have the bishop of GyBr, Duke Christian August of Saxony-Zeitz, created a cardinal. The defending and saving pope of the Jews" presents a book written by Vicente Cárcel Ortí that addresses the actions carried out by Pope Pius XII in favor of the Jews during the Nazi persecution. Recently, Pope Francis dedicated a Vatican property--the Palazzo Migliori--as a homeless shelter. Pope Francis's decision marks the culmination of many papal pronouncements, especially his 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si', which provides a set of principles focused on taking care of both the environment and "the least of our brethren." In this article, I engage in a rhetorical analysis of the pope's theological and political framework based on what Endres and Senda-Cook (2011) call the "rhetoric of place" to explore how Pope Francis alters the symbolic meaning of Vatican property to advance social justice. The unification of Italy is one the events of the nineteenth century which resonated within the international public sphere of the time. The religious dimension of these events contributed decisively to their internationalization. In this context, this essay will analyze the impact of the Roman Question in Latin America. I will examine how the Latin American faithful were informed of what was occurring in Italy, both from the pulpit and through the press. I will also show how descriptions of the situation of the pope sought to create empathy among the faithful, and to develop emotional bonds with the Holy See. Finally, this article studies the role of papal diplomacy, the prelates, and other local actors in the promotion of displays of solidarity with Pope Pius IX. The article frames pope Francis' most important decisions and choices for the governance of the Catholic Church in the most undisputable feature of the pontificate: the re-positioning out of a strictly European and North American theological and geopolitical axis, in order to embrace the global vocation of Catholicism. This implies some epoch-making shifts for what concerns the role of the Vatican, its relationship with the local churches and the bishops' conferences, and the idea of church reform. In the post-Vatican II Ecumenical Council, Pope Paul VI answered the objections about celibacy with the encyclical Sacerdotalis Caelibatus in 1967. For that he presented the reasons for celibacy based on christology, ecclesiology and eschatology. Such foundations of understanding allow the candidate for celibacy to grasp the ultimate meaning of the gift received and lived as an expression of the depth of human love as a participation in the mystery of the incarnation of the Jesus Christ that culminates in his Passion, Death and Resurrection. In such participation, called friendship with the Redeemer, the ordained minister expresses the aesthetics of celibacy in its movements of configuration, availability and hope. In this article, the author surveys both the content of the encyclical, plus the universality of appeal, measured both in terms of the Pope's call to all Christians to be 'responsible disciples', and in the extent of his agreements with other religious leaders, both Christian and from other faiths, particularly Islam. His appeal is effectively to all people of goodwill everywhere. He calls on all to have 'an open heart, a heart for the world' and proposes a 'kinder sort of politics', based on dialogue and mutual respect. He wants to see all relationships as being in the service of human fraternity. Catholicity is often understood as a confessional mark of the Roman Catholic Church since it has been long confused with romanization or with universality. Thanks to theologians like Yves Congar (1904-1995) and to the evolution of the mission situation, new conceptions of catholicity emerged during the twentieth century, and were officially stated during Vatican II. Pope Francis' pontificate has brought about a new stage in the process of the reception of Vatican ll which should contribute to the Reform of the Roman Catholic Church by offering the possibility of synodality and more interaction between cultures. This article is a contribution to the debate emerged in the studies about medievalism: a relationship between religion as a source of reflection and the theory about the appropriation of the Middle Ages in the post medieval period. This article seeks to ponder the difficulty to address themes and objects in the religious ambit. Particularly, the synchronous relationship with time, invoked as an obstacle to the progress of researches concerning medievalism. In the first part, there is an analysis of Richard Utz. We propose a theoretical approach that presents alternatives to solve the possible difficulties of thinking about the relationship between both fields of study. In the second part of the article, we develop a practical application of the initial discussion to analyze Pope Francis’s Urbi et Orbi mass held on March 27th, 2020 in the Vatican. We argue that through categories of analysis like multi-temporality and auctoritas, called upon as possibilities to think about the relationship between medievalism and religion, it is possible to understand the mass as a medievalizing liturgy. The present study deals with the work of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in the diocese of České Budějovice in the 1920s. At the request of the Czechoslovak party, Pope Benedict XV shortly after 1918 decided that the redemptorist college in České Budějovice would be attached to the Prague province and the remaining three German ones transformed into a special viceprovincie, subordinated to the general order in Rome. This act aroused a strong resistance of the public, especially among local German Catholics. The study analyzes the background of this important decision, which did not only influence the ideas of the Holy See about religious conditions in Czechoslovakia, but also influenced the life of the religious community in České Budějovice. The whole dispute represents one of the most strained diplomatic conflicts in Czechoslovak-Vatican relations between the two world wars. The study is based on a large source base which put the influence of the redemptorists in the diocese of České Budějovice into the wider political-religious context of the time. The Catholic Church is the largest religious faction in Poland, the country being organisationally divided into church dioceses governed by bishops. The letter by the bishop of Opole, Andrzej Czaja may be read in more than one way. One of them is the bona fide (i.e., good faith) one, the reading which assumes his sincerity, presumably the one that had been intended by the author for his diocesans to use. The other is less cooperative and sees some cases of over- and understatements in the text. This can be linguistically studied using the pragmatic theories of H.P. Grice and G.N. Leech. The present paper addresses both these readings as they fit into a global picture. Every lay person is to choose which facts to consider and the way he or she will read them. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, the Communist Party of China sought to break all ties between the Church in China and Western powers. Since 1957, there have been two distinct Catholic groups within the PRC: the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, and the underground church loyal to the Vatican. This may be about to change, however, as in September 2018, the Vatican and the PRC signed a new provisional agreement on the appointment of bishops, which could lead to efforts towards reunification of the Catholic Church in China after more than sixty years of division. This paper introduces the changing position of the popes with respect to the PRC. The article argues that the new agreement should not be considered an initiative solely of Pope Francis, but rather the result of numerous changes within the Vatican instigated during the papacy of Pope John XXIII.
