This article focuses on Philip Mirkin's Avant Garde Travel, which provides privately guided adventure travel into Native American culture, history and spirituality. Mirkin worked in the mainstream travel business after graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles prior to starting his own travel business with a colleague in 1985. According to Mirkin, traditional tours were not in depth enough when it came to Native American culture. He orchestrates trips based on his clients' interests. Travel options include touring honor sacred places like the ancient burial site of a high priest in New Mexico's Chaco Canyon or to snow-camp amongst the rustred sandstone spires at Canyonlands National Park in Utah.
