Toxico-hygienic studies have been carried out of a new polymeric glue to be used in the shoe-making industry. As a result of studies the use of the glue is recommended in the shoe-making industry, conditions of its safe use and the way to maintain current sanitary supervision have been suggested.

The virucidal effect of aqueous extracts of a number of plants was studied in tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus titration in SPEV cell culture in microplates, as well as their capacity to induce resistance in virus-infected mice. The aqueous extracts of ledum, motherwort, celandine, black currant, cowberry and bilberry inactivated TBE virus practically completely, and those of St. John's wort, pot marigold, tansy, chamomile, milfoil, and inula only partially. Studied in vivo, the extracts of motherwort, ledum, tansy and black currant induced resistance of mice to TBE virus infection assessed by the increased survival rate of the animals and significant prolongation of the average longevity. The degree of antiviral activity depended on the preparations used and the routes of their administration.

The comparative study of two group B meningococcal vaccines manufactured in the USSR and in Cuba was made. The vaccine manufactured in the USSR contained the noncovalent compound of group B Neisseria meningitidis polysaccharide and outer membrane protein, and the Cuban vaccine contained group B N. meningitidis outer membrane proteins and group C N. meningitidis polysaccharide. The data obtained in this study indicated that both vaccines possessed immunological potency evaluated according to their capacity to stimulate the formation of bactericidal antibodies, whose level was found to increase eightfold after the immunization of monkeys in two injections. Besides, group B meningococcal vaccines did not induce the suppression of nonspecific protective activity characteristics of the body and did not stimulate the formation of autoantibodies to brain and liver tissues, which was indicative of the safety of these vaccines.

The findings of the study of immunological structure of the population in regions endemic for leptospirosis indicate that the immune status of humans makes it impossible to obtain titrated blood sera for the preparation of antileptospirosis immunoglobulin. The data obtained in the study of the immunobiological properties of a new concentrated vaccine against icterohemorrhagic leptospirosis show the possibility of using this vaccine for the immunization of donors with the aim of obtaining blood sera to be used as raw material for the production of immunobiological preparations.

Experiments on mice, rats and dogs showed that furosemide manufactured in the USSR is not inferior by its specific activity to furosemide manufactured abroad. Furosemide manufactured in the USSR and furosemide-substance made in Finland were compared at three doses--1, 5 and 25 mg/kg. The bioavailability of furosemide tablets manufactured in the USSR and that of "Polfa" production tablets studied on rats (5 and 25 mg/kg) and dogs (40 mg) appeared to be identical.

A substrain of the ascitic leucosis P-388 was obtained as a result of interchanging passages of P-388 leucosis cells in the primary cultures and abdominal cavity of mice. The tumor cells of the ascitic leucosis P-388 multiplied in the primary suspended culutres as well as in vivo. The substrain lost its hemorrhagic properties. The content of DNA and RNA in the primary cultures of P-388 doubled every 16-18 hours and the number of the cells doubled every 24-26 hours. The cells of the adapted substrain of P-388 grew also in the semiliquid agarized medium forming compact colonies by the 4th-5th day of cultivation. The primary suspended cultures of P-388 were highly sensitive to cytostatics and in particular to vinblastin and kolchamine (alkaloids). In this connection they were recommended for prescreening antitumor compounds.

The inhibiting effect of remantadine (amantadine) and ribavirin combination on experimental influenza infection was studied in comparison of the effect of each of these drugs alone. The combination of the two chemopreparations was found to inhibit synthesis of influenza A virus proteins in cell culture more effectively, to ensure maximum survival rate of white mice treated with these preparations by oral, aerosol and intraperitoneal routes of administration.

Toxicity of bleomycetin was studied on 3 animal species (rats, rabbits and dogs). The antibiotic was administered intramuscularly and intravenously in various doses for a prolonged period of time. The death of the rats, rabbits and dogs treated with repeated lethal doses of bleomycetin was due to its toxic effect on the kidneys and probably lungs. The level of urea in the blood of the animals before death increased up to 300--400 mg %. Histological examination of the kidneys revealed the picture of glomerulonephritis. The lungs were highly plethoric and showed areas of alveolar collapse and consolidation consisting mainly of the collapsed alveolar epithelium. The liver was not affected by bleomycetin according to both the results of some functional tests and histological examination. tthe blood sugar level after bleomycetin administration was not altered significantly. The changes in the peripheral blood were not pronounced. An increased P wave, decreased R wave and deep S wave were seen on the ECG. Such deviitions may be due not only to the changes in the myocardium but also to the lung affection. When bleomycetiin was used repeatedly in nonlethal doses (1 mg/kg for rats, 1--2 mg/kg for rabbits and 0.25--0.5 mg/kg for dogs), the above changes were less pronounced or not manifested at all. No inhibitory effect on hemopoiesis is an important positive characteristics of bleomycetin, so that it compares very favourably with most other antitumor drugs.

The authors analyze the results of research on clinical pharmacology carried out at various institutions in this country. The overwhelming majority of works are concerned with clinical studies on the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of the drugs, their interaction, and detection of drug side effects. Special attention is paid to the improvement of the methods for determination of the pharmacological agents in biological fluids, and to the design of the maximally adequate parameters of assessing the pharmacodynamics of the main groups of the drugs. Considerable part of investigations is devoted to clinical pharmacogenetics, chronopharmacology, age pharmacology, prediction of the drug effects, approaches to the extrapolation of experimental data to the clinical trials of the drugs. The authors also provide evidence on the system of clinical trials of new drugs and detection of untoward effects of the medicines used.

Pharmacological properties of 2 per cent levomycetin solution in 40 percent hexamethylentetramine solution, as a new pharmaceutical form of levomycetin for intravenous administration prepared at drug-stores were studied. The maximum tolerating doses of the drug for mice, rabbits, and dogs were 26-47 times higher than the therapeutic ones with respect to the content of levomycetin and hexamethylentetramine. No increase in the toxicity of levomycetin and hexamethylentetramine in the preparation was observed. The drug in the doses 16 times higher than the therapeutic ones by the content of levomycetin did not almost change the arterial pressure and the drug in the doses 3.7 times higher than the therapeutic ones did not affect the blood coagulation either in acute experiments, or on its prolong intravenous infusion. Repeated administrations of the drug to rats and rabbits for 15-18 days in doses 3.7-4.8 times higher than the therapeutic ones by the content of levomycetin were innocuous for the animals. Absorption, circulation in the blood, distribution in the tissues and excretion with the urine of levomycetin used in the above pharmaceutical form did not differ from circulation of the antibiotic on its intravenous and oral administration. The drug is recommended for use in medical practice.

The oncolytic and immunotherapeutic effect of the national BCG vaccine with respect to undifferentiated sarcoma of hamster induced by the highly oncogenic adenovirus of green monkeys SA7(C8) was studied. Preliminary data on significant positive effect of the vaccine inoculated before tumor formation were obtained. A single inoculation of the vaccine into tumors did not result in tumor regression in any of the cases.

Eremomycin is a novel antibacterial antibiotic. It was isolated at the Institute of New Antibiotics, the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences from the culture fluid of actinomycete INA-238. By its physico-chemical and biological properties the antibiotic was classified as belonging to the group of polycyclic glycopeptides. Chemical structure of eremomycin was asserted and it was shown to be a new representative of the group close by its structure to vancomycin and differing from it by the carbohydrate composition and structure of tri-phenoxytriaminotricarboxylic acid. By its anti-bacterial spectrum eremomycin was found to be close to ristomycin and vancomycin. Still, its activity was 2-10 times higher. The antibiotic was several times less toxic than vancomycin. Unlike vancomycin and ristomycin, the novel antibiotic induced no tissue necrosis after its intramuscular administration. The chemotherapeutic indices of eremomycin in treatment of staphylococcal and streptococcal sepsis in albino mice exceeded 10 times those of vancomycin. At present eremomycin is under clinical trials.
