The magazine Ilustración Uruguaya was published in Montevideo between 1883 and 1885 by the School of Arts and Crafts as a pedagogical tool for the formation of the gaze. The magazine served the modernizing project in Uruguay in the 19th century and highlighted the lack of fine arts education institutions and specialized publications at that time. The School of Arts and Crafts produced military equipment and stationery for the State, in addition to building two war steamers. Ilustración Uruguaya magazine had a pedagogical approach and presented images and allegories explained to educate the population. The lithography workshop of the School of Arts and Crafts, considered the best equipped in the city, is also mentioned. The magazine played an important role in the dissemination of printing techniques and in the construction of a national imaginary through images. Additionally, the magazine featured portraits of political figures and promoted the idea that fine arts contribute to the material and moral progress of a nation. Illustrated press in general was an opportunity to educate the population on various topics. The study of Ilustración Uruguaya magazine allows for new perspectives on historical periods such as militarism and the idea of modernity. [Extracted from the article]
