This article aims at studying how the literature and the reading formation of students in the last stage of basic education is constituted based on normative documents of Brazilian and Uruguayan education. Based on the documents, it is privileged to discuss how literature and, consequently, the reading formation is forwarded in Brazil and Uruguay, respectively, by the curriculum of High School and Diversified Bachillerato. The investigation of a comparative nature is guided by the principles of document analysis. As a result, it is pointed out that Brazilian guidelines tend to be more general, while in Uruguay there is even an indication of literary works that are part of the curriculum. As for book policies, the Brazilian government gives more emphasis in promoting the creation of collections, while the Uruguayan government does not provide the delivery of physical works to students.
