Abstract

The Wernicke's encephalopathy is a severe disorder caused by vitamin B1 deficiency. Described in 1881 with its main symptoms: mental confusion, ataxia and ophthalmoplegia. It is rarely described but in USA it is identified in 0.8 - 2.8% of all autopsies. Susceptible people are alcoholics, AIDS, or other immunodeficiencies, hemodyalisis or patients with cancer.
