The article discusses the drawbacks in the use of solar space conditioning system. Initial cost of solar space conditioning system is higher when compared to conventional system. Moreover, building codes imposed in the United States constrain the use of new techniques while financial institutions restrict the choice of space conditioning equipment. Regional differences also require the flexibility of solar devices' designs because of weather variation. Industry's fragmentation and stratification also slow the acceptance of technological innovation. Gas price de-regulation and marginal cost pricing policy adoption are recommended to overcome these problems. Among the policies discussed are Solar Heating and Cooling Demonstration Act and Energy Conservation and Conversion Act of 1975. INSET: A solar energy incentive package.
