Background: Young adult sexual minority women (SMW) are at elevated risk for sexual assault (SA), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and inadequate social support. While SA and PTSD can lead to reductions in social support from close significant others, the impact of SA and PTSD on SMWs’ social support has not previously been assessed. Objective: This study examined the associations of past year SA and PTSD with SMW’s social support from intimate partners, family, and friends. It was hypothesized that SA and PTSD would be negatively associated with support from partners, family and friends, and that PTSD would moderate the effect of SA on support in early adulthood. Method: Young adult SMW in the United States (N = 235) who were M = 23.93 (SD = 2.15) years old, primarily lesbian or bisexual (n = 186, 79.1%) and White (n = 176, 74.9%) completed measures on past year exposure to SA and non-SA trauma, PTSD, and social support from intimate partners, family and friends. Results: PTSD was associated with less social support from partners, (b = −0.06, SE = 0.02, p = .010, R² change= .02), family, (b = −0.06, SE = 0.03, p = .025, R² change= .02), and friends, (b = −0.07, SE = 0.02, p = .008, R² change= .02). There was a significant interaction between PTSD and SA on social support from partners (b = −0.01, SE = 0.01, p = .047, R2 change= .01). Neither non-SA nor SA trauma was associated with support from family or friends. Conclusions: Results underscore the potential impact of recent SA on intimate partnerships for young adult SMW with more severe PTSD. Future work should explore how addressing PTSD and improving social support quality may help SMW recover from traumatic experiences and ameliorate the effects of SA on intimate partnerships. Objective: To qualitatively explore and describe fertility information-seeking experiences of sexual minority women (SMW) couples using assisted reproduction.Design: Qualitative thematic analysis of 30 semistructured, in-depth individual and dyadic interviews with SMW couples.Setting: Video conferencing.Patient(s): Twenty self-identified lesbian, bisexual, and queer women comprising 10 same-sex cisfemale couples (10 gestational and 10 nongestational partners) using assisted reproduction technology in the United States.Intervention(s): Not applicable.Main Outcome Measure(s): We describe how SMW came to learn about ways to achieve pregnancy through information seeking, acquisition, appraisal, and use.Result(s): Analysis revealed three primary themes. First, uncertainty and information scarcity: SMW have basic knowledge about how to conceive but uncertainty persists due to information scarcity regarding how same-sex couples navigate assisted reproduction. Second, women attempt to collect fragmented information from disparate sources. The participants discussed a mixture of formal and informal, online, textual (books), and in-person seeking, finding, and synthesizing information that ranged from reliable to unreliable and from accurate to inaccurate. Finally, persistent heteronormative communication focused on the needs and conditions of male-female couples who experienced subfertility or infertility, rather than barriers related to social constraints and the absence of gametes that SMW sought to overcome.Conclusion(s): These findings support and extend existing evidence that has focused primarily on online fertility information seeking. Our findings suggest that shifts in fundamental assumptions about who seeks assisted reproductive support and why, together with improvements in fertility-related health communication, may result in more inclusive care for this population. This study examines the availability of LGBTQ Spanish language nonfiction books among selected university libraries along the United States–Mexico border to measure access to materials for readers and researchers and identify what resources selectors might use to inform purchases. This study utilizes 37 titles and seven libraries for a comparison of holdings. It seeks to expand the body of knowledge available regarding LGBTQ literature while establishing a baseline regarding the availability of LGBTQ Spanish-language materials in academic libraries. Parenting an LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer) identified child presents unique opportunities for growth and development. This study focused on self-reported perceptions of the positive aspects of being the parent of an LGBTQ child. Participants (N = 142) were mothers (83.8%) and fathers (16.2%) of LGBTQ identified individuals who responded to an open-ended online survey. Thematic analysis revealed five primary themes: Personal Growth (open mindedness, new perspectives, awareness of discrimination, and compassion), Positive Emotions (pride and unconditional love), Activism, Social Connection, and Closer Relationships (closer to child and family closeness). The practice implications of these findings for supporting parents in envisioning positive relationship outcomes for themselves and their children are highlighted in the discussion. In this exploratory qualitative study of 11 young adults, ages 19-29 years, we examine how young people who were raised by lesbian parents make meaning out of and construct their relationships with known donors. In-depth interviews were conducted to examine how participants defined their family composition, how they perceived the role of their donors in their lives, and how they negotiated their relationships with their donors. Findings indicate that mothers typically chose known donors who were family friends, that the majority of participants always knew who their donors were, and that their contact with donors ranged from minimal to involved. Further, participants perceived their donors in one of three ways: as strictly donors and not members of their family; as extended family members but not as parents; and as fathers. The more limited role of donors in participants' construction of family relationships sheds light on how children raised in lesbian, gay, and bisexual families are contributing to the redefinition and reconstruction of complex kinship arrangements. Our findings hold implications for clinicians who work with lesbian-mother families, and suggest that young adulthood is an important developmental phase during which interest in and contact with the donor may shift, warranting a transfer of responsibility from mother to offspring in terms of managing the donor-child relationship. research has demonstrated that client sexual orientation influences treatment outcomes. Consequently, many substance user treatment programs offer services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. In a recent search of SAMHSA treatment listings, 11.8% (N = 911) of substance user treatment programs (including residential, outpatient, and partial hospitalization) in the United States and Puerto Rico indicated that they offer specialized services for LGBT clients. However, a telephone survey we conducted in 2003–2004 revealed that 70.8% of these “LGBT” programs were no different from services offered to the general population, and only 7.4% could identify a service specifically tailored to the needs of LGBT clients. Alcohol and substance use plays a complex role in sexual behavior among gay and bisexual men. Data from 779 gay and bisexual men who reported sex with a casual partner in the past 3 months were collected in November 2002 at two large lesbian, gay, and bisexual community events in New York City. Participants reporting any unprotected anal receptive or insertive sex scored significantly higher in outcome expectancies for sexual risk taking while using drugs or alcohol, as did HIV-positive men and men with a higher rate of lifetime sexually transmitted infections. Sexual compulsivity, romantic obsessions, drug use, unprotected anal receptive sex, and HIV serostatus successfully predicted outcome expectancies for sexual risk while under the influence. Therapists and other health and social service providers working with gay and bisexual men should explore the connection between sexual risk and being under the influence to uncover psychosocial mechanisms related to this phenomenon. A community recruited sample of Latino gay and bisexual men in New York were asked to indicate their likelihood of adopting the insertive ( activo ) or receptive ( pasivo ) roles in oral and anal sex according to partners' characteristics. The results show that gender stereotypes of masculinity and femininity play an important role in the sexual behaviour of this population. Versatile individuals report higher likelihood of taking a pasivo sexual role when they perceive a sexual partner as being more masculine than themselves based on his appearing more macho, more aggressive, taller, endowed with a bigger penis, more handsome, or darker skinned. By contrast, respondents report more likelihood of taking an activo role when the partner is perceived as more effeminate, less aggressive, shorter, endowed with a smaller penis, less handsome, or of lighter skin colour. Nevertheless, the findings suggest that, although gender stereotypes play an important generic role, contextual and emotional circumstances may significantly affect sexual-role behaviour in specific cases. Research on lesbian, gay and bisexual young people in the USA and UK has provided an important tool for advocacy and for developing appropriate public policy. Studies suggest that lesbian, gay and bisexual youth are more frequently victims of discrimination as a result of actual or perceived sexual orientation than adults, and anecdotal information suggests that transgender young people may be particularly vulnerable. During the past decade, high rates of victimization, particularly in school and community settings, has paralleled increased visibility. Increased media attention has focused on gay youth in schools, highlighting the need for support, appropriate policies and intervention. This paper reviews research and policy needs related to sexual minority youth in the USA and the UK and identifies strategies and approaches for reducing victimization and harassment and providing safer communities and school environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people. This paper analyses community members' descriptions of subgroups of gay and bisexual men in San Francisco. Five group categories are identified and subjected to detailed analysis. These are labelled leather, men of colour, activists, men who go to clubs and younger. While some of these groups meet established criteria of 'community', they do so in different ways suggesting the existence of relatively discrete sub-communities within the San Francisco gay community. While the gay community is often conceived of as monolithic it may in fact be culturally heterogenous. An alternate multi-constitutive model of community is proposed to account for this cultural heterogeneity. We also discuss how some sub-communities develop around culturally charged areas of difference, and consider the possible implications of these differences for future community interventions. An emerging body of research shows that lesbians and bisexual women face multiple barriers to health care and are in a vulnerable position when accessing care and interacting with health care providers. Young women's experiences have been only marginally researched, however. This article describes findings from a qualitative study that explored the health-related experiences of eight young lesbian and bisexual women ages 18-21 in San Francisco, California, USA, and focuses on how participants negotiated the health care interaction. The negotiations highlight (1) the agency exercised by these young women; (2) the impact of health care providers on young lesbian and bisexual women's access to and utilization of medical care; and (3) the ways the health care interaction reflects larger power dynamics in society. El artículo habla de la historia del SIDA y los métodos para bajar los riesgos para contraerlo. En 1981, el SIDA llamó la atención de la comunidad médica cuando se reportaron varios casos de neumonía al centro de Control de Enfermedades de Atlanta en los Estados Unidos. Se encontraron estos casos dentro de la comunidad homosexual, una comunidad previamente sana, pero que contrajeron la neumonía a causa de un sistema inmunológico deteriorado. Para prevenir más casos de la enfermedad, hay que tomar medidas preventivas como modificar el comportamiento de la población, particularmente el comportamiento sexual.

El artículo habla del problema del SIDA en México y las implicaciones sociológicas para la sociedad. Después del descubrimiento del SIDA, varios países impusieron restricciones contra los homosexuales puesto que eran el grupo más afectado de la enfermedad. En los Estados Unidos, algunas personas propusieron aislar a los homosexuales, como lo que hizo el país con los indígenas. En México, el director general de epidemiología de la Secretaría de Salud anunció que la mayoría de los casos de SIDA en el país vienen directamente de contacto con enfermos en los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, hay un aumento en el número de casos de personas infectadas que no viajaron a otros países, algo que señala un crecimiento del virus dentro de México.
