Purpose: Studies have shown that a lubricant exogenously applied on extrasynovial tendon surfaces can reduce the gliding resistance after flexor tendon repair; however, the reagents that have been tested are solely for experimental testing and are not available for clinical use. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exogenously applied hylan G-F 20, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration–approved hyaluronic acid for the treatment of osteoarthritis, on extrasynovial tendon gliding resistance in an in vitro canine model. Methods: Twenty-four canine peroneus longus (PL) tendons and proximal pulleys of the ipsilateral paws were treated with 1 of 3 solutions: saline, carbodiimide derivatized hylan G-F 20, or unmodified hylan G-F 20. The gliding resistance of each tendon preparation was then measured over 1000 cycles in a saline bath. Results: After 1,000 cycles, the gliding resistance of the PL tendons treated with unmodified hylan G-F 20 decreased significantly compared with the saline-treated tendons. The gliding resistance of the PL tendons treated with modified hylan G-F 20 increased significantly compared with the saline group. Conclusions: The PL tendons treated with pure hylan G-F 20 showed a positive effect on the gliding resistance. Clinical relevance: The results of this in vitro canine study suggest that exogenously applied hylan G-F 20 improves gliding of the extrasynovial tendon graft. The author argues that the two obstacles to a peaceful resolution of the dispute between China and Taiwan are the intentions of political parties and sovereignty and discusses perceptions of sovereignty in the modern world. A history of relations between China, Taiwan, and the U.S. under Taiwanese presidents including Lee Teng-hui, Chiang Kai-shek, and Chiang Ching-kuo is provided as well as an analysis of the 2008 Taiwanese presidential election.

Microfluidic organs and organoids-on-a-chip models of human gastrointestinal systems have been established to recreate adequate microenvironments to study physiology and pathophysiology. In the effort to find more emulating systems and less costly models for drugs screening or fundamental studies, gastrointestinal system organoids-on-a-chip have arisen as promising pre-clinical in vitro model. This progress has been built on the latest developments of several technologies such as bioprinting, microfluidics, and organoid research. In this review, we will focus on healthy and disease models of: human microbiome-on-a-chip and its rising correlation with gastro pathophysiology; stomach-on-a-chip; liver-on-a-chip; pancreas-on-a-chip; inflammation models, small intestine, colon and colorectal cancer organoids-on-a-chip and multi-organoids-on-a-chip. The current developments related to the design, ability to hold one or more 'organs' and its challenges, microfluidic features, cell sources and whether they are used to test drugs are overviewed herein. Importantly, their contribution in terms of drug development and eminent clinical translation in precision medicine field, Food and Drug Administration approved models, and the impact of organoid-on-chip technology in terms of pharmaceutical research and development costs are also discussed by the authors., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Background: The effect of postsurgical radiotherapy (PSRT) among T1-3 gallbladder cancer (GBC) patients with one to three lymph node metastases remains controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of PSRT on gallbladder cancer-specific survival (GBCSS) in patients with stage IIIB., Methods: The data of GBC patients were obtained from the American Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Data resources between 2004 and 2015. Then, a 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) method was performed. GBCSS was compared among all patients. Subgroup analysis was conducted to identify patients who would benefit from PSRT., Results: 726 AJCC (8th edition) stage IIIB GBC patients were included. PSRT failed to improve GBCSS (p = 0.168). Male sex, tumor size ≥ 4 cm and absence of chemotherapy were independent negative prognostic factors. Background: We aimed to explore whether the anatomic extent of lymph node metastases (AE-LNM) could independently predict prognosis of node-positive major salivary gland carcinoma (MaSGC)., Methods: A total of 376 pathologically node-positive MaSGC patients were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database and constituted the training cohort. Using the X-Tile program, these patients were divided into three groups based on AE-LNM degrees. Discrimination of overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) was evaluated and compared with the 8th American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) pN classification. The results were externally validated by 220 patients in a Chinese multicenter cohort (Validation cohort)., Results: Using the training cohort, AE-LNM was divided into Extent 1 (spread to parotid LNs or level I), Extent 2 (spread to level II-IV) and Extent 3 (spread to level V or bilateral LNs or rare LNs). Regarding both OS and DSS, the AE-LNM model revealed clear separation of survival curves, while the pN classification failed to discriminate the prognosis of pN1 and pN2 patients. When we incorporated both the AE-LNM model and AJCC pN classification into the same multivariate Cox analyses, AE-LNM was still an independent prognostic factor, while the AJCC pN classification lost its significance. These results were externally validated by the validation cohort., Conclusion: AE-LNM is an independent nodal prognosticator for node-positive MaSGC and may have improved discriminative ability over the current AJCC pN classification.
