How trading volume responds to price return is investigated by the return–volume correlation dynamics, based on the daily data of two typical financial markets, i.e., the Chinese and the United States stock markets. Whereas the price returns being observed to be positively correlated with the trading volumes for the Chinese stock markets, a significant transition from the positive correlation to negative correlation is revealed for the United States stock markets. Leverage and anti-leverage effects of the return–volume correlations are found for the last decade of the United States stock markets and the Chinese stock markets, respectively. Nonlocal dynamics further suggests an adverse correlation for the two markets. A retarded herding model is introduced to describe the leverage and anti-leverage effects. Abstract As financial derivative products and systemic risk management tools, stock index futures and options have been greatly developed and widely issued in many countries. Taking the Shanghai Stock Exchange 50 (SSE 50) Index and its derivatives as the research objects, we first analyze the lead–lag relationship between stock index, index futures and index options in the Chinese mainland stock market based on a thermal optimal path (TOP) method whose essence is a non-parametric methodology, and compare the results with two mature markets, namely the Hong Kong and US stock markets. We find: (I) In US and Hong Kong stock markets, the index future leads the index. The index option leads the index future when the index remains stable or in an up-trend, but their lead–lag relation reverses when the index collapses; (II) In the Chinese mainland stock market, the index leads the index future, and the index option leads the index future in the whole period of our investigation; (III) In all three markets, the index option leads the index when the index remains stable or in an up-trend, but their lead–lag relation reverses when the index collapses. Our work gives new and strong evidence that the lead–lag relationship varies in different markets and with different market conditions, which has an important contribution to the reveal of the price discovery function of derivative products. Background and Aims: Since the global burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is rising rapidly, the study aimed to assess the association of cardiovascular health (CVH) metrics with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among individuals with CKD., Methods and Results: The cohort study included 5834 participants with CKD from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2018. A composite CVH score was calculated based on smoking status, physical activity, body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol, diet quality, and glucose control. Primary outcomes were all-cause and CVD mortality as of December 31, 2019. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the association between CVH metrics and deaths in CKD patients. During a median follow-up of 7.2 years, 2178 all-cause deaths and 779 CVD deaths were documented. Compared to participants with ideal CVH, individuals with intermediate CVH exhibited a 46.0% increase in all-cause mortality (hazard ratio, 1.46; 95% confidence interval: 1.17, 1.83), while those with poor CVH demonstrated a 101.0% increase (2.01; 1.54, 2.62). For CVD mortality, individuals with intermediate CVH experienced a 56.0% increase (1.56; 1.02, 2.39), and those with poor CVH demonstrated a 143.0% increase (2.43; 1.51, 3.91). Background and Aims: Our study examined the trends of cardiovascular health metrics in individuals with coronary heart disease (CHD) and their associations with all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality in the US., Methods and Results: The cohort study was conducted based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2018 and their linked mortality files (through 2019). Baseline CHD was defined as a composite of self-reported doctor-diagnosed coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, and angina pectoris. Cardiovascular health metrics were assessed according to the American Heart Association recommendations. Long-term all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality were the primary outcomes. Survey-adjusted Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals for the associations between cardiovascular health metrics and all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality. The prevalence of one or fewer ideal cardiovascular health metrics increased from 14.15% to 22.79% (P < 0.001) in CHD, while the prevalence of more than four ideal cardiovascular health metrics decreased from 21.65% to 15.70 % (P < 0.001) from 1999 to 2018, respectively. Compared with CHD participants with one or fewer ideal cardiovascular health metrics, those with four or more ideal cardiovascular health metrics had a 35% lower risk (hazard ratio, 0.65; 95% confidence interval: 0.51, 0.82) and a 44% lower risk (0.56; 0.38, 0.84) in all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality, respectively., Conclusion: Substantial declines were noted in ideal cardiovascular health metrics in US adults with CHD. Background: Comprehensive blood lipoprotein profiles and their association with incident coronary heart disease (CHD) among racially and geographically diverse populations remain understudied., Methods and Results: We conducted nested case-control studies of CHD among 3438 individuals (1719 pairs), including 1084 White Americans (542 pairs), 1244 Black Americans (622 pairs), and 1110 Chinese adults (555 pairs). We examined 36 plasma lipids, lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins, measured by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, with incident CHD among all participants and subgroups by demographics, lifestyle, and metabolic health status using conditional or unconditional logistic regression adjusted for potential confounders. Conventionally measured blood lipids, that is, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, were each associated with incident CHD, with odds ratios (ORs) being 1.33, 1.32, 1.24, and 0.79 per 1-SD increase among all participants. Seventeen lipoprotein biomarkers showed numerically stronger associations than conventional lipids, with ORs per 1-SD among all participants ranging from 1.35 to 1.57 and a negative OR of 0.78 (all false discovery rate <0.05), including apolipoprotein B100 to apolipoprotein A1 ratio (OR, 1.57 [95% CI, 1.45-1.7]), low-density lipoprotein-triglycerides (OR, 1.55 [95% CI, 1.43-1.69]), and apolipoprotein B (OR, 1.49 [95% CI, 1.37-1.62]). All these associations were significant and consistent across racial groups and other subgroups defined by age, sex, smoking, obesity, and metabolic health status, including individuals with normal levels of conventionally measured lipids., Conclusions: Our study highlighted several lipoprotein biomarkers, including apolipoprotein B/ apolipoprotein A1 ratio, apolipoprotein B, and low-density lipoprotein-triglycerides, strongly and consistently associated with incident CHD. Our results suggest that comprehensive lipoprotein measures may complement the standard lipid panel to inform CHD risk among diverse populations.

Objective: Radiation therapy (RT) may increase the risk of second cancer. This study aimed to determine the association between exposure to radiotherapy for the treatment of thoracic cancer (TC) and subsequent secondary lung cancer (SLC)., Materials and Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (from 1975 to 2015) was queried for TC. Univariate Cox regression analyses and multiple primary standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were used to assess the risk of SLC. Subgroup analyses of patients stratified by latency time since TC diagnosis, age at TC diagnosis, and calendar year of TC diagnosis stage were also performed. Overall survival and SLC-related death were compared among the RT and no radiation therapy (NRT) groups by using Kaplan-Meier analysis and competitive risk analysis., Results: In a total of 329 129 observations, 147 847 of whom had been treated with RT. And 6799 patients developed SLC. Receiving radiotherapy was related to a higher risk of developing SLC for TC patients (adjusted HR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.19-1.32; P < 0.001). The cumulative incidence of developing SLC in TC patients with RT (3.8%) was higher than the cumulative incidence (2.9%) in TC patients with NRT(P). The incidence risk of SLC in TC patients who received radiotherapy was significantly higher than the US general population (SIR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.14-1.23; P < 0.050)., Conclusions: Radiotherapy for TC was associated with higher risks of developing SLC compared with patients unexposed to radiotherapy., (© 2024 The Authors. Objective: To prospectively examine the associations of combined lifestyle factors with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality in patients with diabetes., Patients and Methods: Patients with prevalent diabetes were included from 5 prospective, population-based cohorts in China (Dongfeng-Tongji cohort and Kailuan study), the United Kingdom (UK Biobank study), and the United States (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study). Healthy lifestyle scores were constructed according to non-current smoking, low to moderate alcohol drinking, regular physical activity, healthy diet, and optimal body weight; the healthy level of each lifestyle factor was assigned 1 point, or 0 for otherwise, and the range of the score was 0 to 5. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios for incident CVD, CVD mortality, and all-cause mortality adjusting for sociodemographic, medical, and diabetes-related factors, and outcomes were obtained by linkage to medical records and death registries. Data were collected from October 18, 1988, to September 30, 2020., Results: A total of 6945 incident CVD cases were documented in 41,350 participants without CVD at baseline from the 2 Chinese cohorts and the UK Biobank during 389,330 person-years of follow-up, and 40,353 deaths were documented in 101,219 participants from all 5 cohorts during 1,238,391 person-years of follow-up. Adjusted hazard ratios (95% CIs) comparing patients with 4 or 5 vs 0 or 1 healthy lifestyle factors were 0.67 (0.60 to 0.74) for incident CVD, 0.58 (0.50 to 0.68) for CVD mortality, and 0.60 (0.53 to 0.68) for all-cause mortality. Background and Objectives: Although the importance of healthy lifestyles for preventing Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) has been recognized, epidemiologic evidence remains limited for non-White or low-income individuals who bear disproportionate burdens of ADRD. This population-based cohort study aims to investigate associations of lifestyle factors, individually and together, with the risk of ADRD among socioeconomically disadvantaged Americans., Methods: In the Southern Community Cohort Study, comprising two-thirds self-reported Black and primarily low-income Americans, we identified incident ADRD using claims data among participants enrolled in Medicare for at least 12 consecutive months after age 65 years. Five lifestyle factors-tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), sleep hours, and diet quality-were each scored 0 (unhealthy), 1 (intermediate), or 2 (healthy) based on the health guidelines. A composite lifestyle score was created by summing all scores. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs, 95% CIs) for incident ADRD, treating death as a competing risk., Results: We identified 1,694 patients with newly diagnosed ADRD among 17,209 participants during a median follow-up of 4.0 years in claims data; the mean age at ADRD diagnosis was 74.0 years. Healthy lifestyles were individually associated with an 11%-25% reduced risk of ADRD: multivariable-adjusted HR (95% CI) was 0.87 (0.76-0.99) for never vs current smoking, 0.81 (0.72-0.92) for low-to-moderate vs no alcohol consumption, 0.89 (0.77-1.03) for ≥150 minutes of moderate or ≥75 minutes of vigorous LTPA each week vs none, 0.75 (0.64-0.87) for 7-9 hours vs >9 hours of sleep, and 0.85 (0.75-0.96) for the highest vs lowest tertiles of the Healthy Eating Index. The composite lifestyle score showed a dose-response association with up to 36% reduced risk of ADRD: multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% CIs) across quartiles were 1 (ref), 0.88 (0.77-0.99), 0.79 (0.70-0.90), and 0.64 (0.55-0.74); p trend <0.001. The beneficial associations were observed regardless of participants' sociodemographics (e.g., race, education, and income) and health conditions (e.g., history of cardiometabolic diseases and depression)., Discussion: Our findings support significant benefits of healthy lifestyles for ADRD prevention among socioeconomically disadvantaged Americans, suggesting that promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing barriers to lifestyle changes are crucial to tackling the growing burden and disparities posed by ADRD., (© 2022 American Academy of Neurology.)

We examined the associations of dietary cholesterol and egg intakes with cardiometabolic and all-cause mortality among Chinese and low-income Black and White Americans. Included were 47,789 Blacks, 20,360 Whites, and 134,280 Chinese aged 40-79 years at enrollment. Multivariable Cox models with restricted cubic splines were applied to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for mortality outcomes using intakes of 150 mg cholesterol/day and 1 egg/week as the references. Cholesterol intake showed a nonlinear association with increased all-cause mortality and a linear association with increased cardiometabolic mortality among Black Americans: HRs (95% CIs) associated with 300 and 600 mg/day vs. 150 mg/day were 1.07 (1.03-1.11) and 1.13 (1.05-1.21) for all-cause mortality ( P -linearity = 0.04, P -nonlinearity = 0.002, and P -overall < 0.001) and 1.10 (1.03-1.16) and 1.21 (1.08-1.36) for cardiometabolic mortality ( P -linearity = 0.007, P -nonlinearity = 0.07, and P -overall = 0.005). Null associations with all-cause or cardiometabolic mortality were noted for White Americans ( P -linearity ≥ 0.13, P -nonlinearity ≥ 0.06, and P -overall ≥ 0.05 for both). Nonlinear inverse associations were observed among Chinese: HR (95% CI) for 300 vs. 150 mg/day was 0.94 (0.92-0.97) for all-cause mortality and 0.91 (0.87-0.95) for cardiometabolic mortality, but the inverse associations disappeared with cholesterol intake > 500 mg/day ( P -linearity ≥ 0.12; P -nonlinearity ≤ 0.001; P -overall < 0.001 for both). Similarly, we observed a positive association of egg intake with all-cause mortality in Black Americans, but a null association in White Americans and a nonlinear inverse association in Chinese. In conclusion, the associations of cholesterol and egg intakes with cardiometabolic and all-cause mortality may differ across ethnicities who have different dietary patterns and cardiometabolic risk profiles. However, residual confounding remains possible.

Background The aim of this study was to identify associations between dietary intakes of eggs and cholesterol and all-cause and heart disease mortality in a US population. Methods and Results Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2014 were used in this study, which included 37 121 participants ≥20 years of age. Dietary information was assessed via 24-hour dietary recalls at baseline. Mortality status was documented until December 31, 2015. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine the associations between dietary intakes of eggs and cholesterol and all-cause and heart disease mortality. During a median follow-up of 7.8 years, 4991 deaths were documented, including 870 deaths from heart disease. No significant association was observed between additional daily consumption of half an egg and all-cause mortality (multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.96-1.13), or heart disease mortality (0.96; 0.80-1.14). Each 50-mg/day increase of cholesterol intake was inversely associated with all-cause mortality among participants with daily intake <250 mg (0.87; 0.77-0.98), but positively associated with all-cause mortality among participants with daily intake ≥250 mg (1.07; 1.01-1.12). No significant association was found between dietary cholesterol intake and heart disease mortality. Conclusions No significant association was found between egg consumption and mortality in US adults. The association between dietary cholesterol intake and all-cause mortality depended on the baseline intake levels, with an inverse association in those with lower intake levels (<250 mg/day) but a positive association in those with higher intake levels (≥250 mg/day).
