Background: Depression is a common mental disorder with a much higher prevalence in women than in men. Although there has been a gradual increase in research on the association between reproductive health and depression, there is still some inconsistency in the evidence of the relationship between pregnancy loss and depression. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between pregnancy loss and depressive symptoms. Methods: We analyzed data from the 2007–2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which included female participants aged 20 to 80 years. Pregnancy loss was determined based on participants' self-reported number of pregnancies and pregnancy outcomes. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9, score ≥ 10). Multivariate logistic regression, smoothed curve fitting, and generalized additive modeling were used to examine the association between pregnancy loss and depression. We also performed sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses to verify the robustness and specificity of the findings. Results: A total of 12,873 female participants were included in our study, of which 1,595 (12.39%) were categorized as depressed. Multivariate logistic regression results indicated that experiencing a pregnancy loss increased the risk of prevalence of depression in women (for 1 loss: OR = 1.31, 95% CI 1.15,1.50; for 2 or more losses: OR = 1.58, 95% CI 1.38, 1.81). When sensitivity analyses were performed, an association between pregnancy loss and depression was found in both multivariate linear regressions with PHQ-9 scores as a continuous variable and multivariate logistic regressions with a threshold of 5 PHQ-9 scores. The association between pregnancy loss and depression remained stable across subgroups. Conclusion: Pregnancy loss correlated with elevated PHQ-9 scores and a heightened risk of depression in adult women across the United States. Focusing on the incidence of adverse pregnancy events in the female population may help prevent or early recognize the onset of depression. Highlights: We analyzed the relationship between pregnancy loss and depression in American adult women. The sample size was large and nationally representative. Pregnancy loss was associated with higher PHQ-9 scores and an increased likelihood of depression among adult women. Objectives: To investigate the differences in vaccine hesitancy and preference of the currently available COVID-19 vaccines between two countries, namely, China and the United States (U.S.). Method: A cross-national survey was conducted in both China and the United States, and discrete choice experiments, as well as Likert scales, were utilized to assess vaccine preference and the underlying factors contributing to vaccination acceptance. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to enable a direct comparison between the two countries. Results: A total of 9077 (5375 and 3702 from China and the United States, respectively) respondents completed the survey. After propensity score matching, over 82.0% of respondents from China positively accepted the COVID-19 vaccination, while 72.2% of respondents from the United States positively accepted it. Specifically, only 31.9% of Chinese respondents were recommended by a doctor to have COVID-19 vaccination, while more than half of the U.S. respondents were recommended by a doctor (50.2%), local health board (59.4%), or friends and families (64.8%). The discrete choice experiments revealed that respondents from the United States attached the greatest importance to the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines (44.41%), followed by the cost of vaccination (29.57%), whereas those from China held a different viewpoint, that the cost of vaccination covered the largest proportion in their trade-off (30.66%), and efficacy ranked as the second most important attribute (26.34%). Additionally, respondents from China tended to be much more concerned about the adverse effect of vaccination (19.68% vs. 6.12%) and have a lower perceived severity of being infected with COVID-19. Conclusion: Although the overall acceptance and hesitancy of COVID-19 vaccination in both countries are high, underpinned distinctions between these countries were observed. Owing to the differences in COVID-19 incidence rates, cultural backgrounds, and the availability of specific COVID-19 vaccines in the two countries, vaccine rollout strategies should be nation-dependent. Background: Cognitive impairment is highly prevalent among patients with chronic kidney disease, who face an increased risk of cognitive decline. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and cognitive function in older individuals, both with and without chronic kidney disease (CKD)., Methods: In this study, we analyzed data from 2728 participants in the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Cognitive function was measured using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for the Alzheimer's Disease Word Learning subtest (CERAD W-L), the animal fluency test (AFT), the digit symbol substitution test (DSST), and the global cognitive z-score. The GNRI, representing whole-body nutritional status, was calculated based on serum albumin, body weight, and ideal body weight. We employed weighted multiple linear regression analyses and subgroup analyses to assess the independent association of GNRI with cognitive function in CKD and non-CKD populations. Smoothing techniques were used to fit curves, and interaction tests were used to assess the robustness and specificity of the findings., Results: Our analyses revealed a significant positive association between higher GNRI levels and cognitive function in the older US population (for global z-score: β = 0.01; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.00, 0.01). This association remained consistent across various subgroup analyses, including those for different gender groups, age groups, smoking statuses, diabetes statuses, hypertension statuses, individuals with a BMI below 25, individuals who consumed alcohol, and non-Hispanic white individuals. Smoothed curve-fitting analyses indicated that the GNRI was linearly related to cognitive function. No statistically significant interactions were detected among these variables., Conclusion: Our findings emphasize the positive association between GNRI and cognitive health in individuals with or without CKD, especially when combined with other risk factors. Over the years, obesity has become more commonplace and has had a substantial impact on several medical specialties, including reproductive medicine. The potential correlation between the visceral adiposity index (VAI) and infertility has yet to be determined. Women between the ages of 18 and 45 were included in this cross-sectional study, which was conducted as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2015 and 2020. Three tertiles were used to group VAI levels. Subgroup analysis and weighted binary logistic regression were employed to investigate the independent relationship between VAI and infertility. Smooth curve fitting was used to explore nonlinear relationships. This cross-sectional study followed the criteria of the STROBE guidelines. Of the 1231 participants, 127 were infertile women aged 18-45 years. A higher VAI was associated with a higher prevalence of infertility (OR = 1.22, 95% CI:1.03-1.45), which remained consistent across all subgroups (p > 0.05 for all interactions). We demonstrated a positive nonlinear association between VAI and infertility using a smooth curve fit. A higher visceral adiposity index level is positively correlated with a higher incidence of infertility among women in the United States. Women who are infertile can be identified using the visceral obesity index, and controlling visceral obesity may help lower the chances of becoming infertile., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

Objectives: We aimed to investigate the correlation between the frequency of eating out of home and dietary intake, sleep, and physical activity among young employees from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China., Methods: Using the cluster sampling method, 6099 employees aged 40 years or below from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 32 provinces in China were interviewed using an online questionnaire survey. The frequency of eating out of home, dietary intake, sleep, and physical activity of all participants was described, and correlation analysis was used to study the relationships between eating out of home frequency and related indicators., Results: A total of 5353 valid questionnaires were collected with the recovery rate of 87.77%. The results show that 85.8% of participants eat out of home one to five times per week, 10.1% eat out of home more than six times, and 4.1% never eat out. Correlation analysis showed that eating out of home is negatively correlated with a daily vegetable and fruit intake. The lower the intake of vegetables and fruits, the more obvious this tendency. Eating out of home is positively correlated with a daily intake of meat as well as a weekly intake of aquatic products. The higher the intake of meat and aquatic products, the more obvious this tendency. There was a negative correlation between eating out of home and sleep duration and physical activity. The lower the duration of sleep and physical activity, the more obvious this tendency., Conclusions: Based on existing survey data, young employees from the CDC eat out of home regularly, which may affect dietary intake, sleep, and physical activity. Targeted health education programs are urgently needed to assist in the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and reduce the potential risk of chronic disease.
