SMELTING ,IRON industry - Abstract
The article reports on Hismelt Corp, an iron smelting company that has invented a new way of making iron that can cut production costs by 20 percent. United Kingdom based Rio Tinto and three partners: U.S. steelmaker Nucor Corp., Japanese trading house Mitsubishi and China's Shougang Steel have all invested more than $750 million in Hismelt. The key to the Hismelt process, as opposed to the deep slag process, is its high-temperature, high-pressure smelting vessel. For certain iron ore, Hismelt could make blast furnaces obsolete.
