A personal narrative is presented which explores the author's experience of relocating to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic, of being thrust into an English-speaking school, and on how her parents forgot themselves in their hopes of finding a better life for their children.

In this article the author discusses the rights of the parents to address the school boards for complains regarding the welfare of the children in the U.S. It is mentioned that school boards often adopt adamant attitude and does not listen to the complaints of the parents. The author discusses the case of Shirley Portillo, mother of middle school child Jacob Lovato, who was physically abused by teacher Charles Prostak where Portillo filed a complaint against Prostak.

The article presents the author's message to the members of the Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA) in Pennsylvania, on the occasion of the ongoing National Library Week in the U.S. She encourages them to meet senators in their local offices and explain to them about state aid to public libraries.
