Healthy teeth allow us to eat and stay well-nourished. Although primary care clinicians receive limited training about teeth, given the common nature of dental problems, it is important that they understand and recognize normal and abnormal dental conditions and can implement primary and secondary prevention of dental conditions in their practice. PubMed has been used to search the scientific literature for evidence on the following topics: normal dental development, dental abnormalities, malocclusion, teething, dental caries and related epidemiology and prevention, fluoride, dental injury and its management and prevention; and identification, prevention and treatment of gingivitis and periodontal disease. Literature review relied on randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and Cochrane reviews when relevant and available. Other sources of evidence included cohort and case-control studies. Consensus statements and expert opinion were used when there was a paucity of high-quality research studies. The literature has been synthesized on these topics to make them relevant to pediatric primary care clinicians, and as available, the strength of evidence has been characterized when making clinical recommendations., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.net.)

Acute otitis media is the most common infection for which antibiotics are prescribed in children, resulting in more than 20 million antibiotic prescriptions annually. New practice guidelines published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians call for the judicious use of antibiotics in view of increasing antibiotic resistance and the unclear necessity of the use of antibiotics in children with uncomplicated acute otitis media. This article reviews those guidelines, several other common ear, nose, and throat entities, including sinusitis and dental emergencies, and current strategies in diagnosis and treatment.

Approximately half of children sustain some type of dental injury. Management of injuries to the anterior teeth of preschool children is directed toward minimizing potential damage to the developing permanent teeth; therefore, heroic measures to save primary teeth are not indicated. Crown fractures in the permanent dentition, even those exposing the dental pulp, can be successfully treated hours after an injury. Prompt referral for dental treatment is advisable. Displacement injuries to permanent teeth constitute genuine dental emergencies in which the prognosis is directly related to the timeliness of treatment. Avulsed permanent teeth should be immediately reimplanted by any capable person. If that is impossible, the teeth should be placed in cold milk and the child referred for immediate treatment by a dentist. Mouthguards prevent dental injuries but are not widely used outside of a few organized sports. Efforts should continue to promote mouthguard use in all contact sports.
