The nation's shift to value-based care requires health-care systems to consider innovative operational changes that will support high-quality care while also containing cost in order to sustain long-term growth. To do so, leaders must uncover hidden resources within their operations. In this article, a director of care coordination shares how care coordinators in her hospital support patients and families, and how she uncovered two hidden resources within the care coordination team—time, and talent—in response to an operational challenge. The time available to leaders was expanded by dividing each leadership process into its basic elements and by reducing the number of scheduled meetings and required reports, reclaiming 1000 leadership hours in 1 year. She made the most of employee's talents by identifying each team member's unique interests and expertise and introducing a "team champion" system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose The purpose of this article is to present an overview of rapid response team (RRT) history in the United States, provide a review of prior RRT effectiveness research, and propose the reframing of four new questions of RRT measurement that are designed to better understand RRTs in the context of contemporary nursing practice as well as patient outcomes. Organizing Construct RRTs were adopted in the United States because of their intuitive appeal, and despite a lack of evidence for their effectiveness. Subsequent studies used mortality and cardiac arrest rates to measure whether or not RRTs 'work.' Few studies have thoroughly examined the effect of RRTs on nurses and on nursing practice. Methods An extensive literature review provided the background. Suppositions and four critical, unanswered questions arising from the literature are suggested. Findings The results of RRT effectiveness, which have focused on patient-oriented outcomes, have been ambiguous, contradictory, and difficult to interpret. Additionally, they have not taken into account the multiple ways in which these teams have impacted nurses and nursing practice as well as patient outcomes. Conclusions What happens in terms of RRT process and utilization is likely to have a major impact on nurses and nursing care on general medical and surgical wards. What that impact will be depends on what we can learn from measuring with an expanded yardstick, in order to answer the question, 'Do RRTs work?' Clinical Relevance Evidence for the benefits of RRTs depends on proper framing of questions relating to their effectiveness, including the multiple ways RRTs contribute to nursing efficacy. Background: The purpose of this descriptive secondary analysis of qualitative data was to gain insights into the role and opportunities of the reflective observer in high-fidelity patient simulation (HFPS). Although the value of HFPS in nursing education has been documented, the reflective observer role in HFPS may not be used to its potential. Method: This secondary data analysis of a broader study included qualitative interviews of those in observer roles (A/ = 23). This secondary analysis used content analysis to address research questions related to the reflective observer role. Results: Three themes emerged related to using the reflective observer role for self-assessment, peer review and debriefing, and team-focused learning. Conclusion: Implications for nursing education, including orienting all HFPS participants to reflective observer roles and opportunities, are addressed. Nurses serving in the uniformed forces are often first responders to medical crises throughout the world. The U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is an elite team of full-time, well-trained, highly qualified public health professionals who respond to public health crises at home and abroad. This article briefly describes responsibilities and roles of nurses during deployments; offers an exemplar of deployment to West Africa for Ebola response; and reviews the outcomes of the response effort.
