COVID-19 vaccinations protect against severe illness and death, but associations with post-COVID conditions (PCC) are less clear. We aimed to evaluate the association between prior COVID-19 vaccination and new-onset PCC among individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection across eight large healthcare systems in the United States. This retrospective matched cohort study used electronic health records (EHR) from patients with SARS-CoV-2 positive tests during March 2021-February 2022. Vaccinated and unvaccinated COVID-19 cases were matched on location, test date, severity of acute infection, age, and sex. Vaccination status was ascertained using EHR and integrated data on externally administered vaccines. Adjusted relative risks (RRs) were obtained from Poisson regression. PCC was defined as a new diagnosis in one of 13 PCC categories 30 days to 6 months following a positive SARS-CoV-2 test. The study included 161,531 vaccinated COVID-19 cases and 161,531 matched unvaccinated cases. Compared to unvaccinated cases, vaccinated cases had a similar or lower risk of all PCC categories except mental health disorders (RR: 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02–1.10). Vaccination was associated with ≥10% lower risk of sensory (RR: 0.90, 0.86–0.95), circulatory (RR: 0.88, 0.83–0.94), blood and hematologic (RR: 0.79, 0.71–0.89), skin and subcutaneous (RR: 0.69, 0.66–0.72), and non-specific COVID-19 related disorders (RR: 0.53, 0.51–0.56). In general, associations were stronger at younger ages but mostly persisted regardless of SARS-CoV-2 variant period, receipt of ≥3 vs. 1–2 vaccine doses, or time since vaccination. Pre-infection vaccination was associated with reduced risk of several PCC outcomes and hence may decrease the long-term consequences of COVID-19. In the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD), we previously reported no association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination in early pregnancy and spontaneous abortion (SAB). The present study aims to understand how time since vaccine rollout or other methodological factors could affect results. Using a case-control design and generalized estimating equations, we estimated the odds ratios (ORs) of COVID-19 vaccination in the 28 days before a SAB or last date of the surveillance period (index date) in ongoing pregnancies and occurrence of SAB, across cumulative 4-week periods from December 2020 through June 2021. Using data from a single site, we evaluated alternative methodological approaches: increasing the exposure window to 42 days, modifying the index date from the last day to the midpoint of the surveillance period, and constructing a cohort design with a time-dependent exposure model. A protective effect (OR = 0.78, 95% confidence interval: 0.69, 0.89), observed with 3-cumulative periods ending March 8, 2021, was attenuated when surveillance extended to June 28, 2021 (OR = 1.02, 95% confidence interval: 0.96, 1.08). We observed a lower OR for a 42-day window compared with a 28-day window. The time-dependent model showed no association. Water conservation is an important factor for production of rice in the United States because of declining aquifer levels, but little research has been done to evaluate insect management in rice systems integrating water conservation practices. Rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, is an important insect pest of rice in the U.S. Rice water weevil is a semiaquatic species that relies on flooded conditions to complete larval development, so water conservation practices are likely to impact their pest status. The study was conducted across the Mississippi River alluvial floodplain to compare rice water weevil population densities in different zones of a furrow irrigated rice field to a conventionally flooded rice field. All locations were sampled at 3, 4, and 5 wk after the initial irrigation. Larval densities were greatest in the lower end of furrow irrigated fields and in the adjacent flooded rice field compared with the upper and middle sections that did not hold standing water when averaged across three sample dates. Also, rice water weevil densities were greater during week five than week three. In terms of rice yields, the top third of furrow irrigated rice fields, the section that remained mostly dry, produced lower rough rice yields than all other sections and the flooded field. These results suggest that rice water weevil populations can be lower in a furrow irrigated rice system. Pecan scab, caused by Venturia effusa, is the most economically damaging disease of pecan in the southeastern United States, and annual epidemics are most effectively managed through multiple fungicide applications. The fungicide applications can be the single greatest operating cost for commercial growers and the return on that investment is impacted by fungicide resistance. V. effusa produces multiple generations of conidia per season, exhibits substantial genetic diversity, overwinters as stromata in the tree, and is under immense selection from the applied fungicides, all of which lead to a high risk for developing fungicide resistance. Since the mid-1970s, resistance or reduced sensitivity has been observed in isolates of V effusa to the methyl benzimidazole carbamates, demethylation inhibitors, quinone outside inhibitors, organotin compounds, and the guanidines. Over the last 10 years, several studies have been conducted that have improved both scab management and fungicide resistance management in V. effusa. The aim of this review is to summarize recent developments in our understanding of fungicide resistance in V. effusa in the context of scab management in southeastern pecan orchards. The history, modes of action, general use of the labeled fungicides, and mechanisms and stability of fungicide resistance in V. effusa are discussed; conclusions and future research priorities are also presented. BACKGROUND: Forty-five states permit religious exemptions to school immunization laws; 15 allow personal belief exemptions. Updated religious exemption estimates are lacking, and it is unclear if personal belief exemption availability impacts religious exemption rates. We aimed to (1) update religious exemption trends in kindergartners, (2) compare states' proportions of kindergartners with religious exemptions by personal belief exemption availability, and (3) describe whether the proportion of kindergartners with religious exemptions changed in Vermont after it eliminated personal belief exemptions in 2016. METHODS: We analyzed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data on exemptions for children entering kindergarten from 2011 to 2018, including 295 state-years in our final analysis. Using a quasi-binomial regression analysis, we compared mean proportions of kindergartners with religious exemptions in states allowing both nonmedical exemptions against states with religious exemptions only, adjusting for policy strength and school year. RESULTS: States with religious and personal belief exemptions were one-fourth as likely to have kindergartners with religious exemptions as states with religious exemptions only (risk ratio 0.25; 95% confidence interval 0.16-0.38). After Vermont's policy change, the mean proportion of kindergartners with a religious exemption increased from 0.5% to 3.7%. States were significantly more likely to have kindergartners with religious exemptions during the 2017-2018 school year compared with the 2011-2012 school year (P = .04). CONCLUSIONS: Religious exemption rates appear to be associated with personal belief exemption availability, may be subject to a replacement effect on personal belief exemption elimination, and are increasing. The Sf9 and Sf21 cell lines derived from ovarian tissues of the wide-host-range phytophagous lepidopteran Spodoptera frugiperda are widely used for research and commercial-scale production of recombinant proteins. These cell lines are chronically infected with a rhabdovirus (Sf-RV) that does not cause any overt cytopathic effects. We demonstrate that wild populations of S. frugiperda in the eastern United States and Caribbean are infected with genetically diverse strains of Sf-RV and that this virus is also capable of infecting cells of Spodoptera exigua, Heliothis subflexa, and Bombyx mori. Feeding studies demonstrated the ability of S. frugiperda larvae to deposit Sf-RV onto human-consumed vegetables during feeding. Although no evidence for replication in two species of plant cells was detected, subcellular localization studies demonstrated that the Sf-RV nucleocapsid was targeted to plasmodesmata, while two forms of the accessory protein were differentiated on the basis of their ability to localize to nuclei. Collectively, the results from this study suggest that environmental exposure of humans to Sf-RV is likely to be commonplace and frequent, but its inability to replicate in plant or human cells suggests that there is no substantial risk to human health. Agriculture in the United States must respond to escalating demands for productivity and efficiency, as well as pressures to improve its stewardship of natural resources. Growing global population and changing diets, combined with a greater societal awareness of agriculture's role in delivering ecosystem services beyond food, feed, fiber, and energy production, require a comprehensive perspective on where and how US agriculture can be sustainably intensified, that is, made more productive without exacerbating local and off-site environmental concerns. The USDA's Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network is composed of 18 locations distributed across the contiguous United States working together to integrate national and local agricultural priorities and advance the sustainable intensification of US agriculture. We explore here the concept of sustainable intensification as a framework for defining strategies to enhance production, environmental, and rural prosperity outcomes from agricultural systems. We also elucidate the diversity of factors that have shaped the past and present conditions of cropland, rangeland, and pastureland agroecosystems represented by the LTAR network and identify priorities for research in the areas of production, resource conservation and environmental quality, and rural prosperity. Ultimately, integrated long-term research on sustainable intensification at the national scale is critical to developing practices and programs that can anticipate and address challenges before they become crises. Accurate surveillance is critical for monitoring the epidemiology of emerging tobacco products in the United States, and survey science suggests that survey response format can impact prevalence estimates. We utilized data from the 2014 New Jersey Youth Tobacco Survey (n = 3,909) to compare estimates of the prevalence of 4 behaviors (ever hookah use, current hookah use, ever e-cigarette use, and current e-cigarette use) among New Jersey high school students, as assessed using "check-all-that-apply" questions, with estimates measured by means of "forced-choice" questions. Measurement discrepancies were apparent for all 4 outcomes, with the forced-choice questions yielding prevalence estimates approximately twice those of the check-all-that-apply questions, and agreement was fair to moderate. The sensitivity of the check-all-that-apply questions, treating the forced-choice format as the "gold standard," ranged from 38.1% (current hookah use) to 58.3% (ever e-cigarette use), indicating substantial false-negative rates. These findings highlight the impact of question response format on prevalence estimates of emerging tobacco products among youth and suggest that estimates generated by means of check-all-that-apply questions may be biased downward. Alternative survey designs should be considered to avoid check-all-that-apply response formats, and researchers should use caution when interpreting tobacco use data obtained from check-all-that-apply formats. Background: The utilization and extent of pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) varies depending on the disease and practice patterns.Aims: This study compares practice patterns in utilization of PLND between Indian and United States (US) practices.Settings and Design: We focused on 415 patients (204 India; 211 US) prostate cancer patients treated with robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, between 2015 and 2016, within the Vattikuti Collective Quality Initiative database.Subjects and Methods: Utilization of PLND and number of nodes removed were evaluated for the entire cohort, and after stratifying for Country of treatment and D'Amico risk groups. Logistic regression tested the relationship between PLND and country of treatment, after adjusting for disease risk.Results: Indian patients had a higher risk distribution (D'Amico high-risk 53.4% in India vs. 27% in the US; P< 0.001) compared to their US counterparts. Overall, 193/204 (94.6%) Indian patients underwent PLND versus 181/211 (85.8%) US patients (P = 0.003). When stratified based on disease risk, PLND was performed more frequently in Indian patients with low-risk disease (81.0% vs. 41.4%,P= 0.008), but not in those with intermediate and high-risk disease. On multivariable analysis, Indian patients had a 2.57-fold higher probability of undergoing PLND than their US counterparts (P = 0.02). The analysis of the number of lymph nodes removed showed similar trends.Conclusions: Indian patients are more likely to undergo PLND than US patients. This is, especially true for patients with low-risk disease, who are unlikely to benefit from this procedure. This article discusses the use of rye cover and gamagrass strips to reduce the nitrate runoff of subsurface tiled drainage in the Midwest U.S. According to the authors, nitrate concentrations and nitrate loads were significantly reduced in subsurface drainage after rye winter cover treatments but cumulative annual drainage was not reduced. However, permanent gamagrass strips did not significantly reduce nitrate concentrations, nitrate loads or annual drainage. They concluded that rye winter cover after soybean and corn crops can reduce nitrates in surface waters impacted by subsurface drainage systems.

Background Observational and experimental data support a potential breast cancer chemopreventive effect of green tea. Methods We conducted an ancillary study using archived blood/urine from a phase IB randomised, placebo-controlled dose escalation trial of an oral green tea extract, Polyphenon E (Poly E), in breast cancer patients. Using an adaptive trial design, women with stage I- III breast cancer who completed adjuvant treatment were randomised to Poly E 400 mg ( n = 16), 600 mg ( n = 11) and 800 mg ( n = 3) twice daily or matching placebo ( n = 10) for 6 months. Blood and urine collection occurred at baseline, and at 2, 4 and 6 months. Biological endpoints included growth factor [serum hepatocyte growth factor ( HGF), vascular endothelial growth factor ( VEGF)], lipid (serum cholesterol, triglycerides), oxidative damage and inflammatory biomarkers. Results From July 2007-August 2009, 40 women were enrolled and 34 (26 Poly E, eight placebo) were evaluable for biomarker endpoints. At 2 months, the Poly E group (all dose levels combined) compared to placebo had a significant decrease in mean serum HGF levels (−12.7% versus +6.3%, P = 0.04). This trend persisted at 4 and 6 months but was no longer statistically significant. For the Poly E group, serum VEGF decreased by 11.5% at 2 months ( P = 0.02) and 13.9% at 4 months ( P = 0.05) but did not differ compared to placebo. At 2 months, there was a trend toward a decrease in serum cholesterol with Poly E ( P = 0.08). No significant differences were observed for other biomarkers. One of the many challenges facing laboratories is the verification of their automated Complete Blood Count cell counters for the enumeration of body fluids. These analyzers offer improved accuracy, precision, and efficiency in performing the enumeration of cells compared with manual methods. A patterns of practice survey was distributed to laboratories that participate in proficiency testing in Ontario, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan to determine the number of laboratories that are testing body fluids on automated analyzers and the performance specifications that were performed. Based on the results of this questionnaire, an International Working Group for the Verification and Performance of Automated Cell Counters for Body Fluids was formed by the International Council for Standardization in Hematology ( ICSH) to prepare a set of guidelines to help laboratories plan and execute the verification of their automated cell counters to provide accurate and reliable results for automated body fluid counts. ABSTRACT Exit interviews with visitors were used to estimate public use on and along 811 miles of the Missouri River from Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, South Dakota, to the river's mouth near St. Louis, Missouri, during a 13-month period in 2004 and 2005. We estimated both types and amount of public use and the economic value of the river to the users. Economic values of recreation to the public were estimated using both the Travel Cost Method (TCM) and the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). For these public access and areas, an estimated 2 042 980 individual visits were made to the river, with total economic benefits of the river to users estimated at $12.79 per individual visit (TCM) and $23.65 per individual visit (CVM).We discuss methodological differences between the two methods and the potential utility of this information to river management. ABSTRACT We present an analysis of Chandra observations of the position of 10 nearby (<25 Mpc) Type Ia supernovae, taken before the explosions. No sources corresponding to progenitors were found in any of the observations. We calculated upper limits on the bolometric luminosities of the progenitors assuming blackbody X-ray spectra with temperatures of 30-150 eV. This is inspired by the fact that luminous super-soft X-ray sources have been suggested as the direct progenitors of Type Ia supernovae. The upper limits of two supernovae in our sample are comparable to the luminosities of the brightest observed super-soft sources, ruling out such sources as the progenitors of these supernovae. In contrast to Liu et al., we find that for SN2011fe we can rule out Eddington luminosity systems for blackbody temperatures as low as 40 eV. Our findings are consistent with statistical studies comparing the observed Type Ia supernova rate to the number of super-soft sources or the integrated X-ray luminosity in external galaxies. This suggests that either the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae are not accreting, nuclear burning white dwarfs or that they do not look like the classical super-soft sources, e.g. because they are obscured. To aid in improvement of breeding programs for production and reproduction traits of US dairy goats, breed differences over time were documented and genetic parameters were estimated. Data were from herds with ≥2 breeds (Alpine, LaMancha, Nubian, Oberhasli, Saanen, or Toggenburg), but only purebred data were analyzed. Three kidding periods were examined: 1976 through 1984, 1985 through 1994, and 1995 through 2005. Univariate repeatability mixed models were used to estimate least squares means by kidding period-breed and genetic parameters for milk, fat, and protein yields, combined fat and protein yield, fat and protein percentages, protein:fat ratio, age at first kidding, and kidding interval. Trends across kidding periods were favorable for most yield traits for all breeds but generally unfavorable for reproduction traits. Saanens had the highest milk (1,063 to 1,125 kg) and protein yields (31 to 33 kg). Nubians had the highest fat yields (37 to 40 kg) and lowest milk yields (791 to 851 kg). Oberhaslis had the lowest fat (31 to 33 kg) and protein (23 to 27 kg) yields. Alpines had the largest increase in milk yield (7.4%); Oberhaslis had the largest increase in protein (17.4%) and combined fat and protein (13.2%) yields. Combined fat and protein yield was higher for Nubians, Saanens, and Alpines (65 to 72 kg) than for LaManchas, Toggenburgs, and Oberhaslis (53 to 67 kg). Nubians had the highest fat (4.7 to 4.8%) and protein (3.6 to 3.8%) percentages. Only Nubians increased in fat percentage (2.1%); protein percentage increased most for Toggenburgs (7.4%) and Alpines (7.1%). Protein:fat ratio was highest for Toggenburgs (0.84 to 0.89) and lowest for Nubians (0.76 to 0.81), but Nubians had the largest increase in protein:fat ratio (6.6%). Saanens were oldest at first kidding (509 to 589 d), and Toggenburgs and LaManchas generally were youngest (435 to 545 d); age at first kidding increased most for Alpines (21.8%) and LaManchas (21.6%). Kidding intervals generally were shorter for Oberhaslis, LaManchas, and Nubians (350 to 377 d) than for Toggenburgs, Alpines, and Saanens (373 to 387 d). Kidding interval increased most for Nubians (3.9%) and Saanens (3.8%) and decreased only for Oberhaslis (5.4%). Heritability estimates across breeds were 0.35 for milk and fat yields, 0.37 for protein yield and protein:fat ratio, 0.36 for combined fat and protein yield, 0.52 for fat percentage, 0.54 for protein percentage, 0.23 for age at first kidding, and 0.05 for kidding interval. Bacterial leaf streak (BLS), caused by Xanthomonas translucens pv. undulosa, has re-emerged as an important disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum) in the United States. Planting resistant varieties is the best approach to manage BLS in the absence of effective bactericides. However, most of the wheat varieties currently grown in the Upper Midwest of the United States appeared to be susceptible to BLS. From the core subset of the USDA National Small Grain Collection (NSGC), a set of 605 winter wheat accessions of diverse origin and improvement status were initially inoculated with a virulent strain BLSW16 of X. translucens pv. undulosa from Casselton, ND on the flag leaf of each plant in a greenhouse. Disease reactions were assessed between 7 and 10 days after infiltration using a 0 to 6 rating scale, where ≤2.0 was considered resistant and >2.1 was considered susceptible. Resistance varied with geographic origin and was significantly (P ≤ 0.05) more frequent in accessions from North America compared to accessions from northern, eastern, and southern Europe and from south-central Asia. About 8.3% of accessions tested were resistant, and accessions with an improvement status of "cultivar" were significantly more likely to be resistant than were accessions classified as either landraces or breeding lines. Forty-two of the accessions exhibiting resistance in response to the strain BLSW16 in the first screening test were retested utilizing each of the two additional strains (BLS Cr25 and BLS Lb74 of X. translucens pv. undulosa) collected from Carrington and Lisbon, respectively. Nonparametric data analysis revealed 35 accessions were resistant, one accession, PI 266860, was susceptible to both strains, and six accessions showed differential responses. The majority of the BLS-resistant accessions also were resistant to at least one other important wheat disease based on the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) data. Rye (Secale cereale L.) is a frequently used winter cover crop in many agronomic production systems in the United States. Our objective was to determine whether incorporating rye into soil while still green results in greater suppression of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) and Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Wats.) compared to conventional cover crop management. Two similar experiments were conducted: one with peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) and the other with cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Both experiments were a split-plot design with tillage as the main plot (conventional, green manure, and strip) and cover crop as the subplot. The cover crop treatments were a weedy fallow and the rye cultivars Wrens Abruzzi, Wheeler, Oklon, and Elbon. Wrens Abruzzi produced the greatest amount of biomass, Oklon and Elbon intermediate, and Wheeler the least. Where there was substantial soil disturbance (e.g., conventional tillage and green manure), Palmer amaranth densities were low and not influenced by cover crop. In the strip tillage plots, however, all of the rye cultivars, except Wheeler, reduced establishment of the weed compared to winter fallow. Root galling from nematodes on cotton and peanut was influenced by tillage, but not by rye cover crop. Gall indices on cotton were greater in conventional tillage than in either strip tillage or green manure plots; whereas on peanut, they were greater in the strip tillage than in the conventional tillage or green manure plots. Background Effectiveness of medical therapies in chronic pancreatitis has been described in small studies of selected patients. Aim To describe frequency and perceived effectiveness of non-analgesic medical therapies in chronic pancreatitis patients evaluated at US referral centres. Methods Using data on 516 chronic pancreatitis patients enrolled prospectively in the NAPS2 Study, we evaluated how often medical therapies [pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT), vitamins / antioxidants (AO), octreotide, coeliac plexus block (CPB)] were utilized and considered useful by physicians. Results Oral PERT was commonly used (70%), more frequently in the presence of exocrine insufficiency (EI) (88% vs. 61%, P < 0.001) and pain (74% vs. 59%, P < 0.002). On multivariable analyses, predictors of PERT usage were EI (OR 5.14, 95% CI 2.87-9.18), constant (OR 3.42, 95% CI 1.93-6.04) or intermittent pain (OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.14-3.45). Efficacy of PERT was predicted only by EI (OR 2.16, 95% CI 1.36-3.42). AO were tried less often (14%) and were more effective in idiopathic and obstructive vs. alcoholic chronic pancreatitis (25% vs. 4%, P = 0.03). Other therapies were infrequently used (CPB - 5%, octreotide - 7%) with efficacy generally <50%. Conclusions Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy is commonly utilized, but is considered useful in only subsets of chronic pancreatitis patients. The article focuses on an observational cohort study which assessed hospital-level variation use of allogeneic red blood cells (RBC) fresh-frozen plasma, and platelet transfusions in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The study examined patients undergoing primary isolated CABG surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass during calendar year 2008 at 798 sites in the U.S. Study findings revealed wide variability in the rates of transfusion of RBCs and other blood products, independent of case mix, among patients undergoing CABG surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass in U.S. hospitals in an adult cardiac surgical database.

With 2 figures and 2 tables To study the genetic control of malting quality, in North American and European barley varieties, over five contrasting environments, 106 doubled haploid (DH) lines, from the cross ‘Triumph’ × ‘Morex’, were grown at Pullman (Washington State, USA) in 2002, Dundee (Scotland) in 2003 and 2005 and Lleida and Valladolid (Northern Spain) in 2006. The vrs locus, associated with two-row vs. six-row ear type, had a significant effect, as two-row lines had higher grain protein content at all sites. This had variable effects on other malting parameters, but hot water extract (EXT) was not significantly affected at the two Spanish sites. Quantitative trait loci associated with malting characters were distributed across all seven chromosomes, but the most influential, with effects on EXT and alcohol yield, at more than one site, were on 1H, with ‘Morex’ providing the increasing allele and 5H, with the increasing allele from ‘Triumph’. Transgressive segregation, in both directions, occurred at all sites. Background Pancreatic enzyme supplements are standard therapy for fat malabsorption in patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. The FDA determined that published data are insufficient to support the efficacy and safety of these agents. Aim To determine if pancreatic enzyme supplements are: (i) superior to placebo for treating fat malabsorption and (ii) superior to other supplements based on randomized cross-over trials. Methods A computer-assisted search of MEDLINE and EMBASE was performed to identify relevant studies. Data extraction on study design, improvement in coefficient of fat absorption, diarrhoea and adverse events using prespecified forms. Results A total of 12 manuscripts met inclusion criteria. Most studies (10/12) compared pancreatic enzyme supplements that used different delivery systems, while using similar quantities of enzymes. These studies found no consistent difference in fat malabsorption or gastrointestinal symptoms between different active treatments. Two small placebo-controlled trials ( n = 65 patients) demonstrate that pancreatic enzyme supplements are superior to placebo for fat absorption. Data are inadequate to determine if pancreatic enzyme supplements lead to weight gain or improvement in diarrhoea. Conclusions Based on data from randomized cross-over trials, pancreatic enzyme supplements appear to improve fat malabsorption. Smoke particle emissions from the combustion of biomass fuels typical for the western and southeastern United States were studied and compared under high humidity and ambient conditions in the laboratory. The fuels used were Montana ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), southern California chamise (Adenostoma fasciculatum), and Florida saw palmetto (Serenoa repens). Information on the nonrefractory chemical composition of biomass burning aerosol from each fuel was obtained with an aerosol mass spectrometer and through estimation of the black carbon concentration from light absorption measurements at 870 nm. Changes in the optical and physical particle properties under high humidity conditions were observed for hygroscopic smoke particles containing substantial inorganic mass fractions that were emitted from combustion of chamise and palmetto fuels. Light scattering cross sections increased under high humidity for these particles, consistent with the hygroscopic growth measured for 100 nm particles in HTDMA measurements. Photoacoustic measurements of aerosol light absorption coefficients revealed a 20% reduction with increasing relative humidity, contrary to the expectation of light absorption enhancement by the liquid coating taken up by hygroscopic particles. This reduction is hypothesized to arise from two mechanisms: (1) shielding of inner monomers after particle consolidation or collapse with water uptake; (2) the lower case contribution of mass transfer through evaporation and condensation at high relative humidity (RH) to the usual heat transfer pathway for energy release by laser-heated particles in the photoacoustic measurement of aerosol light absorption. Isoprene is the largest single VOC emission to the atmosphere. Although it is primarily oxidized photochemically during daylight hours, late-day emissions that remain in the atmosphere at sunset undergo oxidation by NO3 in regionally polluted areas with large NOx levels. A recent aircraft study examined isoprene and its nocturnal oxidants in a series of night flights across the Northeast US, a region with large emissions of both isoprene and NOx. Substantial amounts of isoprene that were observed after dark were strongly anticorrelated with measured NO3 and were the most important factor determining the lifetime of this radical. The products of photochemical oxidation of isoprene, methyl vinyl ketone and methacrolein, were more uniformly distributed, and served as tracers for the presence of isoprene at sunset, prior to its oxidation by NO3. A determination of the mass of isoprene oxidized in darkness showed it to be a large fraction (>20%) of emitted isoprene. Organic nitrates produced from the NO3+isoprene reaction, though not directly measured, were estimated to account for 2-9% of total reactive nitrogen. The mass of isoprene oxidized by NO3 was comparable to and correlated with the organic aerosol loading for flights with relatively low organic aerosol background. The contribution of nocturnal isoprene oxidation to secondary organic aerosol was determined in the range 1-17%, and isoprene SOA mass derived from NO3 was calculated to exceed that due to OH by approximately 50%. In laying hens, behavioral responses measured late in the laying period are associated with decreased performance. If measured early in the laying period, these behavioral responses could be used to predict performance later in life. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the association of the behavioral response toward a novel object at 23 wk of age with subsequent performance during the laying period. A total of 1,251 hens from 6 different pure-bred Rhode Island Red lines (208 hens per line on average) were housed in 318 cages (56 cages per line on average). Performance variables included egg production (both per hen-present and hen-housed); BW at 19, 51, and 69 wk of age; mortality; and feather damage at 63 wk. Hens from cages with an approach response realized greater total egg production (hen-day and hen-housed) and greater egg production in the middle (hen-housed) and end of the laying period (per hen present and hen housed) compared with hens from cages with a passive response toward the novel object. Approach responses were also associated with more feather damage, but not with BW or mortality. Low correlations were found between greater egg production and more feather damage. These results suggest that an approach response toward a novel object measured early in the laying period is associated with better performance later in the laying period. Documenting the types and extent of conservation practices in a watershed is necessary to determine their water quality impacts. A conservation practice inventory for the South Fork of the Iowa River, 85% in corn (Zen mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max L. (Merr.)] rotations, showed only 7% of cropland was managed using no-tillage. About 30% of cropland receives manure annually, prior to corn. Surface residue following soybean was usually inadequate (<30%), indicating a key management challenge. About 90% of fields with >34% highly erodible land, subject to USDA conservation compliance, indeed had erosion-control practices installed. Grassed waterways and riparian buffers were common edge-of-field practices, and highly erodible land fields near streams often had multiple practices and rotations including third crops. Yet, while most conservation practices are aimed at controlling runoff, tile drainage is the dominant hydrologic pathway. Resource management systems that address tile drainage as the primary route of nutrient loss need to be developed and encouraged. Background: While high caffeine consumption has been shown to be associated with increased blood pressure in controlled experiments, the relationship between caffeine consumption and blood pressure in preadolescent (ages 6-11 years) and adolescent (ages 12-19 years) children has not been well studied. The primary objective of this study was to assess the cross-sectional relationship between caffeine intake and blood pressure in 8- to 10-year-old African American girls who eat an unrestricted diet. Methods: Demographic, 24-hour dietary recall, and blood pressure data collected at baseline from 303 African American girls aged 8-10 years in the Girls health Enrichment Multisite Studies (GEMS) cohort were analyzed by using linear and multiple regression models. Results: Dietary caffeine intake was not associated with either systolic or diastolic blood pressure (P = .33 and P = .36, respectively). However, consistent with the literature, height and body mass index were each positively and independently associated with systolic blood pressure (both P<.0001). Height and amount of sodium intake were positively associated with diastolic blood pressure (P = .01 and P = .02, respectively). Bitter rot, caused by the fungus Greeneria uvicola, is one of the most important fruit rot diseases that threaten the burgeoning winegrape (Vitis vinifera) industry in the southeastern United States. Epidemiological studies were conducted to examine the period of fruit susceptibility of V. vinifera to G. uvicola, influence of temperature and duration of wetness on infection, and relative susceptibility of cultivars to bitter rot. In field studies, susceptibility of Merlot, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc fruit increased from bloom until véraison in 2003 and from bloom until 2 weeks before véraison in 2004. When detached V. vinifera fruit were inoculated and incubated at 14, 22, 26, and 30°C for 6, 12, 18 or 24 h of wetness, 22.4 to 24.6°C and 6 or 12 h of wetness were the optimal conditions for infection of fruit by G. uvicola. The relative susceptibility of 38 cultivars and selections, including 23 V. vinifera cultivars and five French-American hybrids, was determined in a detached fruit inoculation assay. A wide range in susceptibility was observed among the cultivars and selections. Fruit of cultivars of V. vinifera were significantly more susceptible than French-American hybrids. VERITAS, the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, is a major new ground-based observatory for studying nonthermal astrophysics in the gamma-ray band above 100 GeV. Stereo observations with the first two of four telescopes began in March, 2006 at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona, USA. Construction and commissioning of the remainder of the array has taken place during the Summer and Fall of 2006, in parallel with engineering and science observations by the first two telescopes. We present the performance of the VERITAS telescopes during this commissioning period and discuss the key science program planned for VERITAS during the first two years of routine array operation, beginning in March, 2007. Cattle (n = 995 steers and 757 heifers) were randomly selected from a commercial abattoir (Emporia, KS) to determine the relationships between USDA quality and yield grade characteristics and serum concentrations of leptin, IGF-I, and GH. Animals were randomly selected postexsanguination on the slaughter line on 4 occasions (March, May, August, and January). Blood was collected at exsanguination and transported to the University of Missouri for analysis. Sex and hide color were recorded. Carcass data included HCW, 12th-rib fat thickness, KPH, LM area, and marbling score, which were collected from each carcass approximately 24 h postmortem. Average serum leptin concentrations were greater (P = 0.008) for heifers (11.9 ng/mL) than steers (10.9 ng/mL). Heifers had lighter carcasses (331.9 vs. 352.2 kg, P < 0.001), greater 12th-rib fat measurements (1.3 vs. 1.1 cm, P < 0.001), greater KPH (2.5 vs. 2.4%, P < 0.001), and more marbling (Small40 vs. Small10, P < 0.001) than steers. Positive correlations (P < 0.01) existed between leptin concentration and marbling score (r = 0.28), 12th-rib fat depth (r = 0.37), KPH (r = 0.23), and USDA yield grade (r = 0.32). Negative correlations were found between leptin and IGF-I (r = -0.11; P < 0.001) and leptin and GH (r = -0.32; P < 0.001). Negative correlations (P < 0.01) were observed for IGF-I and KPH (r = -0.23) and marbling score (r = -0.20), whereas GH was most highly negatively correlated with KPH (r = -0.23; P < 0.001). Leptin concentration accounted for variation (P < 0.001) in a model separating least squares means across USDA quality grade, separating USDA standard (8.5 ng/mL), select (10.3 ng/mL), low choice (12.2 ng/mL), and upper 2/3 choice/prime (>12.9 ng/mL) carcasses. There was no difference (P = 0.31) observed in leptin concentrations between the upper 2/3 choice and prime carcasses (12.9 and 14.2 ng/mL, respectively). Relationships within endocrine profiles and between endocrine concentrations and carcass quality characteristics may prove to be a useful tool for the prediction of beef carcass composition. The objective of this research was to partition phenotypic variation in calf gain from birth to weaning, and milk production measured, by the weigh-suckle-weigh method, and udder score of cows into genetic and nongenetic components. Data were from the Line 1 Hereford population maintained by USDA-ARS at Miles City, MT, and included observations of pre- weaning gain (n = 6,835) from 2,172 dams, milk production (n = 692) from 403 cows, and udder score (n = 1,686) from 622 cows. Data were analyzed using a Gibbs sampler for multiple-trait animal models. Results are reported as means ± SD derived from the posterior distributions of parameter estimates. Mean estimates of the phenotypic variance of preweaning gain, milk production, and udder score were 476.3 kg2, 8.88 kg2, and 1.89 (1 to 9 scale), respectively. Estimates of phenotypic correlations between preweaning gain and milk production, preweaning gain and udder score, and milk production and udder score were 0.37 ± 0.04, -0.07 ± 0.04, and -0.09 ± 0.05, respectively. Estimates of heritability for direct and maternal preweaning gain, milk production, and udder score were 0.13 ± 0.03, 0.25 ± 0.04, 0.25 ± 0.06, and 0.23 ± 0.05, respectively. Genetic correlations of milk production with maternal preweaning gain and udder score were estimated as 0.80 ± 0.08 and -0.36 ± 0.16, respectively. Posterior distributions of the other genetic correlations all contained 0.00 within the respective 90% probability density posterior intervals. Estimates of repeatability of maternal preweaning gain, milk production, and udder score were 0.43 ± 0.03, 0.39 ± 0.05, and 0.34 ± 0.03, respectively. Breeding value for maternal gain from birth to weaning was highly predictive of breeding value for milk production. Direct measurement of milk production to use in genetic improvement may not be justified because it is difficult to measure, and selection based on the breeding value for maternal preweaning gain may be nearly as effective in changing milk production as direct selection. A potentially undesirable consequence of selection to increase milk production is the degradation of udder quality. However, this correlation is not so strong as to preclude simultaneous improvement of milk production and udder quality using appropriate predicted breeding values for each trait. The objective of this study was to directly detect impervious cover using new high-resolution IKONOS imagery in South Lake Tahoe, California, USA. The research presented was a pilot analysis to assess the ability of satellite imagery to derive accurate estimates of impervious cover, critical for assessing impacts to water quality, wildlife, and fish habitat. A combination of image processing methods based on principal component analysis and spatial morphological operators was developed for a 25 km 2 urban area in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The methodology produced very accurate identification of both commercial and residential impervious cover in an area dominated by dense conifer canopy. Sub-canopy and sub-shadow surfaces were not only detectable, but also discernible with respect to the underlying substrate. An overall accuracy of 92.94% was obtained, with an even higher user accuracy of 95.83% based on 170 ground truth points. Impervious cover is a difficult feature to delineate accurately and efficiently using direct methods. For this application, spatial resolution proved a better operator than spectral resolution. SUMMARYY 1. A total of 2.7 × 106 walleye fingerlings and 1.7 × 10 5 northern pike fingerlings were stocked during 1987–99 in eutrophic Lake Mendota. The objectives of the biomanipulation were to improve sport fishing and to increase piscivory to levels that would reduce planktivore biomass, increase Daphnia grazing and ultimately reduce algal densities in the lake. The combined biomass of the two piscivore species in the lake increased rapidly from < 1 kg ha -1 and stabilised at 4–6 kg ha -1 throughout the evaluation period. 2. Restrictive harvest regulations (i.e. increase in minimum size limit and reduction in bag limit) were implemented in 1988 to protect the stocked piscivores. Further restrictions were added in 1991 and 1996 for walleye and northern pike, respectively. These restrictions were essential because fishing pressure on both species (especially walleye) increased dramatically during biomanipulation. 3. Commencing in 1987 with a massive natural die-off of cisco and declining yellow perch populations, total planktivore biomass dropped from about 300–600 kg ha-1 prior to the die-off and the fish stocking, to about 20–40 kg ha -1 in subsequent years. These low planktivore biomasses lasted until a resurgence in the perch population in 1999. 4. During the period prior to biomanipulation when cisco were very abundant, the dominant Daphnia species was the smaller-bodied D. galeata mendotae , which usually reached a biomass maximum in June and then crashed shortly thereafter. Beginning in 1988, the larger-bodied D. pulicaria dominated, with relatively high biomasses occurring earlier in the spring and lasting well past mid-summer of many years. 5. The variability associated with estimating the true concentration of teliospores of dwarf bunt (Tilletia controversa) per 50 g of wheat (TC concentration) in an export wheat shipment was studied by measuring the TC concentration in 16 test samples (50 g) taken from each of 137 export shipments. The variability among the 16 TC test sample results, as measured by the standard deviation, was found to increase with TC concentration. The functional relationship was approximately linear in a full-log plot and regression analysis was used to determine the coefficients of the regression equation. Using statistical theory, the regression equation was modified to predict the standard deviation among test sample sizes other than the 50 g size used in this study. The standard deviation and coefficient of variation associated with using a 50 g test sample to estimate the true TC concentration of a wheat shipment with 2000 spores per 50 g were estimated to be 1062·8 and 53·1%, respectively. Deposition patterns of mainstream cigarette smoke were studied in casts of human extrathoracic and lung airways. The laboratory tests were designed to simulate smoking (i.e., the behavior of undiluted cigarette smoke in smokers' lungs), not secondary exposures to nonsmokers. The experimental data revealed concentrated deposits at well-defined sites, particularly at bifurcations (most notably at inclusive carinal ridges) and certain segments of tubular airways. The measurements suggest the occurrence of cloud motion wherein particles are not deposited by their individual characteristics but behave as an entity. The observed behavior is consistent with the theory of Martonen (1992), where it was predicted that cigarette smoke could behave aerodynamically as a large cloud (e.g., 20 µm diameter) rather than as submicrometer constituent particles. The effects of cloud motion on deposition are pronounced. For example, an aerosol with a mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of 0.443 µm and geometric standard deviation (GSD) of 1.44 (i.e., published cigarette smoke values) will have the following deposition fractions: lung (TB + P) = 0.14, tracheobronchial (TB) = 0.03, and pulmonary (P) = 0.11. When cloud motion is simulated, total deposition increases to 0.99 and is concentrated in the TB compartment, especially the upper bronchi; pulmonary deposition is negligible. Cloud motion produces heterogeneous deposition resulting in increased exposures of underlying airway cells to toxic and carcinogenic substances. The deposition sites correlated with incidence of cancers in vivo. At present, cloud motion concentration effects per se are not addressed in federal regulatory standards. The experimental and theoretical data suggest that concentrations of particulate matter may be an important factor to be integrated into U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) risk assessment protocols. An episodes of care methodology examines the con tiguous cluster of services related to a particular health condition. We developed an episodes methodology for evaluating the quality of health care delivery to privately insured adult asthma patients. Computer algorithms were used for episode construction beginning with an index asthma diagnosis and ending with a final clinical event, yielding a sample of 30,553 episodes. Only service claims with an asthma diagnosis were assigned to an episode. We used a database of private insurance claims from 1992 to 1993. Disease staging served as the framework for evaluating episodes with similar severity and resource use. We found that episodes of care can be constructed from claims data and have the potential for use in physi cian profiling and as quality screens. Certain limitations in using this methodology suggest that caution needs to be exercised in applying this approach to evaluation of health care services. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Patients with chronic granulomatous disease are predisposed to infections by catalase-positive organisms in the environment. Chromobacterium violaceum is a catalase-positive bacterium whose saprophytic source in this country is the subtropical soil and water of the southeastern United States. Two patients with chronic granulomatous disease, followed at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland, acquired C. violaceum infections in Florida. All 10 cases previously reported were acquired in Florida and Louisiana, and reports for which dates were available showed that all infections were acquired from June to September. Seven of 10 patients died; one patient was studied and found to have chronic granulomatous disease. Thus, at least three of the 12 known patients have had underlying chronic granulomatous disease. We suggest that C. violaceum infections occur with unusual frequency in patients with a common underlying predisposing disorder; C. violaceum poses a potential threat to patients with chronic granulomatous disease living in or visiting the endemic states. Although there is evidence that the number and ages of children influence marital stability, studies have not systematically tracked the risk of marital disruption throughout the child-rearing years. This study uses marital and fertility histories from the June 1985 Current Population Survey to examine this issue. Continuous-time regression models with ages and numbers of children as time-varying covariates are estimated. Net of controls for age at marriage, year of marriage, education, and marital duration, stability increases with family size up to the third child but starts to decline as family size reaches five or more children. Aging of children is disruptive until the youngest child reaches adulthood, after which marriages become much more stable.
