We developed and validated the Family Reminiscence Scale (FARS) in which adults rate their frequency of reminiscing with their parents about childhood experiences. In three studies, we characterized how FARS was related to adults' recollections of their earliest memories in different cultural contexts. First, we examined the factorial structure of FARS and obtained two factors of reminiscing: first-time events and general-recurrent events. In the second study, confirmatory factor analyses were conducted, in which we established measurement invariance across gender and age groups. In Study 3, we tested the factorial structure of FARS in an American sample to ensure cross-cultural invariance. We also showed that the two factors were differentially related to the phenomenology of earliest memories in samples from Turkey and United States (Study 2 & Study 3). Overall, FARS was found to be reliable and valid to measure for adult samples to assess the quality of the linguistic input during childhood. Predictive value of FARS has been shown across different gender, age, and culture groups, underlining the organizational role of the early communicative context in the phenomenology and linguistic style of adults' early memories.

Engineering representing the backbone of a nation aims to migrate towards the knowledge economy. The strengthening of engineering education leads to the nation's self-reliance while building indigenous capabilities. The current study attempts to compare engineering education in China with Pakistan, Europe, and the USA in context of One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative. The comparison provided by this study will help to identify some of the trends and challenges in engineering education at the national and regional level of OBOR countries. The study suggests that OBOR strategy will allow China to build excellence in engineering education and export its expertise among the member countries during developing stage.

This paper assesses the impact of real exchange rate (RER) misalignment on the trade balance between the United States and China, accounting for the complexity of traded products. We employ two recent econometric techniques: the panel autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to estimate both long – and short-run dynamics, and the dynamic panel threshold model of Seo, M. H., and Y. Shin (2016. “Dynamic Panels with Threshold Effect and Endogeneity.” Journal of Econometrics 195 (2): 169–186) to uncover potential non-linearities and identify critical thresholds that could lead to a regime shift. Using highly disaggregated trade data at the HS 06-digit level, encompassing 913 products from 2004 to 2020, our findings reveal a negative impact of RER misalignment on the United States’ trade balance with China. However, this detrimental effect is significant only in industries dealing with less complex products. In contrast, industries handling highly complex products show a notably positive impact. Furthermore, our results suggest that industries can benefit from an undervalued exchange rate only when they have a relatively high level of product complexity. Additionally, heightened product complexity can mitigate any adverse effects overvaluation might have on the trade balance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As English is one of the most spoken languages in the globally interconnected world of today, many Saudi universities are enrolling their EFL students in summer intensive English programs at US universities. The main purpose is to enhance their EFL students' oral competencies. This new policy is, in fact, the result of the failure of CLT practices in local universities (Liao, 2004; Nunan, 2003), large EFL classes and students' low proficiency (Yu, 2001; Li, 1998) and EFL teachers' preference for using traditional methods rather than communicative ones (Chowdhry, 2010; Littlewood, 2007). However, Saudi students, upon arrival to the US, encounter challenging communicative situations. The present study, therefore, advocates the implementation of four-week language software program in Jazan University prior to the later four-week language program in US universities. The aim is to prepare EFL Saudi students for the communicative and academic situations and cultural norm they would be encountering and experiencing in the USA. The project includes two modalities; online learning and in class learning. The online learning entails a language software content-based program with emphasis on listening, vocabulary, writing, grammar and reading skills. The in-class learning includes only speaking activities that are paralleled and compatible to the online thematic content. Thus, the main focus of the present paper will primarily be directed to providing a detailed description of the online language software and the different elements involved in constituting it.

Many researchers and authorities have recognized the important role that sports clubs can play in public health. In spite of attempts to create a theoretical framework in the early 2000s, a thorough understanding of sports clubs as a setting for health promotion (HP) is lacking. Despite calls for more effective, sustainable, and theoretically grounded interventions, previous literature reviews have identified no controlled studies assessing HP interventions in sports clubs. This systematic mapping review details how the settings-based approach is applied through HP interventions in sports clubs and highlights facilitators and barriers for sports clubs to become health-promoting settings. In addition, the mapped facilitators and barriers have been used to reformulate previous guidelines of HP in sports clubs. Seven databases were searched for empirical research published between 1986 and 2017. Fifty-eight studies were included, principally coming from Australia and Europe, describing 33 unique interventions, which targeted mostly male participants in team sports. The settings-based approach was not yet applied in sports clubs, as more than half of the interventions implemented in sports club targeted only one level of the socio-ecological model, as well as focused only on study participants rather than the club overall. Based on empirical data, the analysis of facilitators and barriers helped develop revised guidelines for sports clubs to implement settings-based HP. This will be particularly useful when implementing HP initiatives to aid in the development of sports clubs working with a whole setting approach.

Medicare Part D holds an important role in facilitating prescription drug coverage for older adults in the United States seeking dermatologic treatment. With the aim to ensure improved healthcare access for its beneficiaries, this optional plan presents distinct challenges when compared to commercial insurance due to its unique legislative regulations. Notably, the Anti-Kickback Statute hinders Medicare beneficiaries from using manufacture coupons or discounts, a practice commonly employed by commercial insurance patients. Consequently, older adults with Medicare encounter much higher retail prices for certain medications, limiting access and further exacerbating healthcare disparities. Recent legislative efforts, notably the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), aim to mitigate these challenges, allowing direct Medicare negotiations with manufacturers and introducing an annual cap on out-of-pocket expenses. However, these changes may have unintended consequences, including premium increases and provider opt-outs. Physicians, including dermatologists, must stay informed about evolving policies, advocate for their patients and actively engage in healthcare reform to ensure equitable access to dermatologic care for older adults. Background: Hiatal hernia is a common surgical pathology. Such hernias can be found incidentally and patients may opt for an initial nonoperative approach though many will pursue surgery after symptom progression. Data on the effects of age on the outcomes of hiatal hernia repair may help inform this decision-making process. Methods: The TriNetX database was queried for all adult patients undergoing hiatal hernia repair from 2000 to 2023. Patients were divided into elective and emergent cohorts on the basis of diagnosis codes indicating obstruction or gangrene. Patients aged 80–89 were compared against those aged 65–79 in unadjusted analysis. Logistic regression models controlling for additional health history covariates were created to calculate odds ratios for primary outcomes. Results: There were 2310 octogenarians and 15,295 seniors who underwent elective hiatal hernia repair, and 406 octogenarians and 1462 seniors who underwent emergent repair during the study period. The vast majority of patients in both groups underwent minimally invasive operations. In the elective cohort, octogenarians had higher rates of mortality, malnutrition, sepsis, respiratory failure, pneumonia, DVT, blood transfusion, and discharge to nursing facility. In the emergent cohort, octogenarians had higher rates of mortality, malnutrition, sepsis, and respiratory failure. The odds ratios for mortality in the elective and emergent cohorts were 3.9 (95% CI 3.1–5.0) and 3.5 (95% CI 2.1–5.6), respectively. Conclusion: Octogenarians are at a meaningfully increased risk for mortality and morbidity after both elective and emergent hiatal hernia repair compared to senior-aged patients. Distance education and web-based courses are mainstream in the United States higher education and growing (NCES, 2003) involving over 80% of four year public universities in 2002. The National Academy of Science review of "how people learn" suggests that technology-mediated learning can be used to respond to students' preferences and related characteristics. This investigation of the relationships between learners' characteristics and their perception of web-based learning and satisfaction with their course used Kolb's (1984) Learning Styles Inventory and Walker's (2003) distance education learning environment instrument plus demographic questions to survey 279 students in five web-based undergraduate courses in a Midwestern university. The study finds that the three dimensions of Moore's Transactional Distance Theory may be linked with Kolb's two dimensional views of individual learning styles. For example, introductory biology courses with high structure are perceived as more satisfactory by students who prefer a more "abstract conceptual" learning style for "knowledge grasping." The author recommends that courses are designed to accommodate multiple learning styles with variety on all dimensions of transactional distance. (Contains 2 figures and 1 table.)

Although literature has demonstrated the noninferiority of oral antibiotics in the treatment of infectious endocarditis, widespread adoption of this practice has yet to occur in the United States. We report on 32 patients with infectious endocarditis treated by a multidisciplinary endocarditis team and a standardized approach to partial oral antibiotic therapy with a high rate of clinical success. This paper examines the hypothesis that religious firms are more socially responsible. By utilizing a novel measure of religiosity that reflects firm‐level adherence to Christian values, we find that religiousness is positively associated with the CSR engagement of large US firms after controlling for county‐level religiosity and various firm characteristics. The results indicate that religious firms have higher social and environmental responsibility scores. The positive relationship is particularly strong with respect to product responsibility, emissions reduction, and responsible use of resources. While county‐level religiosity does not have any incremental effect on CSR above the influence of firm‐level religiousness, we document that the positive linkage between firm‐level religiosity and CSR engagement is strengthened by local religiousness. Background Reducing intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) can improve patient outcome in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) intervention. We sought to identify ICH risk factors after AIS thrombectomy. Methods This is a retrospective review of the Stroke Thrombectomy and Aneurysm Registry (STAR) database. All patients who underwent AIS thrombectomy with available ICH data were included. Multivariable regression models were developed to identify predictors of ICH after thrombectomy. Subgroup analyses were performed stratified by symptom status and European Cooperative Acute Stroke Study (ECASS) grade. Results The study cohort comprised 6860 patients. Any ICH and symptomatic ICH (sICH) occurred in 25% and 7% of patients, respectively. Hemorrhagic infarction 1 (HI1) occurred in 36%, HI2 in 24%, parenchymal hemorrhage 1 (PH1) in 22%, and PH2 in 17% of patients classified by ECASS grade. Intraprocedural complications independently predicted any ICH (OR 3.8083, P<0.0001), PH1 (OR 1.9053, P=0.0195), and PH2 (OR 2.7347, P=0.0004). Race also independently predicted any ICH (black: OR 0.5180, P=0.0017; Hispanic: OR 0.4615, P=0.0148), sICH (non- white: OR 0.4349, P=0.0107), PH1 (non-white: OR 3.1668, P<0.0001), and PH2 (non- white: OR 1.8689, P=0.0176), with white as the reference. Primary mechanical thrombectomy technique also independently predicted ICH. ADAPT (A Direct Aspiration First Pass Technique) was a negative predictor of sICH (OR 0.2501, P<0.0001), with stent retriever as the reference. Conclusions This study identified ICH risk factors after AIS thrombectomy using real-world data. There was a propensity towards a reduced sICH risk with direct aspiration. Procedural complications and ethnicity were predictors congruent between categories of any ICH, sICH, PH1, and PH2. Further investigation of technique and ethnicity effects on ICH and outcomes after AIS thrombectomy is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article will address predictors of success for online students. A survey questionnaire was used to gather data concerning the social and educational levels of readiness of online students at a four-year private university in the Midwestern United States. Of the 4,050 potential participants, 250 (6.23%) responded to the survey. Stepwise regression revealed two models for predicting student performance on two key dependent variables in this study. The first model sought to predict student success based on their self-reported views on whether they felt successful in their online courses. This model revealed 11 survey questions that were significant predictors of students self-reported success scores, b = .382, t (17.737) = 5.399, p < .001. The eleven questions in the model also explained a significant proportion of variance in the self-reported success scores, R² = .472, F (1, 171) = 29.15, p < .001. The second model focused on the dependent variable of self-reported grade point average (GPA) of students. Of the questions asked in the survey the second model showed eight variables that were statistically significant predictors of student GPA, b = -.397, t (110.066) = -5.767, p < .001. These eight survey questions explain a significant portion of the variance for students' self-reported grade point averages, R² = .359, F (1, 178) = 33.261, p < .001. These finding shed light on the importance of student perspective concerning persistence and success in online education. Background: Teachers often rely on the use of open‐ended questions to assess students' conceptual understanding of assigned content. Particularly in the context of mathematics; teachers use these types of questions to gain insight into the processes and strategies adopted by students in solving mathematical problems beyond what is possible through more close‐ended problem types. While these types of problems are valuable to teachers, the variation in student responses to these questions makes it difficult, and time‐consuming, to evaluate and provide directed feedback. It is a well‐studied concept that feedback, both in terms of a numeric score but more importantly in the form of teacher‐authored comments, can help guide students as to how to improve, leading to increased learning. It is for this reason that teachers need better support not only for assessing students' work but also in providing meaningful and directed feedback to students. Objectives: In this paper, we seek to develop, evaluate, and examine machine learning models that support automated open response assessment and feedback. Methods: We build upon the prior research in the automatic assessment of student responses to open‐ended problems and introduce a novel approach that leverages student log data combined with machine learning and natural language processing methods. Utilizing sentence‐level semantic representations of student responses to open‐ended questions, we propose a collaborative filtering‐based approach to both predict student scores as well as recommend appropriate feedback messages for teachers to send to their students. Results and Conclusion: We find that our method outperforms previously published benchmarks across three different metrics for the task of predicting student performance. Through an error analysis, we identify several areas where future works may be able to improve upon our approach. Recent advancements in areas of machine learning and natural language processing have led to promising results in a range of domains and applications. Climate change and the urban heat island (UHI) effect are increasing extreme heat risk in cities across the world, and have already made extreme heat the top weather-related cause of death in the United States. Despite this, understanding of viable strategies to address extreme heat is still limited, for both decision-makers and the public. Using a design-based research methodology, we developed an interactive educational game, Chill City, which teaches players about possible heat planning strategies and their tradeoffs. We surveyed adult, non-expert players to understand the game's reception and impacts. Players expressed that they enjoyed the game and that it helped them better understand heat planning strategies and the environmental, social, and economic tradeoffs associated with them. We argue that environmental games offer educational potential for adult learners on issues of extreme heat and climate change that should be further explored to inform effective approaches and designs. Purpose: The American College of Radiology (ACR) requires MR personnel not to work alone due to the increased risk of safety issues such as projectiles, aggressive patients, and technologist fatigue. As a result, we intend to assess the current safety of lone-working MRI technologists in MRI departments in Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study using a self-report questionnaire was conducted in 88 Saudi hospitals. Results: A response rate of 64% (174/270) was obtained among the 270 MRI technologists which were identified. The study discovered that 86% of MRI technologists had prior experience working alone. In terms of MRI safety training, 63% of MRI technologists received such training. A question about lone MRI workers' awareness of the ACR's recommendations revealed that 38% were unaware of such recommendations. Furthermore, 22% were misinformed, believing that working alone in an MRI unit is optional or depends on the individual's desire to work alone. Working alone has the primary consequence of being statistically significantly associated with projectile/object-related accidents/mistakes (p = 0.03). Conclusion: Saudi Arabian MRI technologists have extensive experience working alone without supervision. Most MRI technologists are unaware of lone working regulations, which has raised concerns about accidents/mistakes. There is a need for MRI safety training and adequate practical experience to raise awareness of MRI safety regulations and policies related to lone working among departments and MRI workers. Recent studies are assessing the impact of news‐based policy uncertainty measure on trade flows between countries. In this paper we add to this new literature by investigating the symmetric and asymmetric effects of Australian policy uncertainty index and the U.S. index on trade flows of 63 two‐digit industries that trade between the two countries. When we estimated a symmetric and linear model for each industry, we found short‐run effects of both uncertainty measures on 30% of the industries' trade flows. However, this number increased to 70% when an asymmetric and nonlinear model was estimated. The long‐run effects of both policy uncertainty followed similar pattern. Less than 10% of trade was affected by the estimates of the linear models. However, estimates of the nonlinear models predicted that 41.20% (26.53%) of the U.S. exports to Australia was affected by the U.S. uncertainty (Australian uncertainty). As for the Australian exports to the United States, 6.72% (5.5%) of its exports were affected by the changes in the U.S. policy uncertainty (Australian uncertainty). In almost all industries, increased uncertainty was found to hurt the trade and decreased uncertainty was found to boost it at different rate or asymmetrically. In sum, the U.S. and Australian policy uncertainty measure affects U.S. exports to Australia much more than they affect Australian exports to the United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The optimal timing of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) following ocular trauma is an ongoing debate. Early vitrectomy post-trauma enables the rapid assessment of retinal disease by removing the scaffold that fosters proliferative vitreoretinopathy. On the other hand, late vitrectomy is less challenging as there is a lower risk of bleeding and posterior vitreous detachment induction is easier. The purpose of this work is to report the functional and anatomical outcomes following ocular traumatic injuries in a United States-based cohort, emphasizing the time of intervention. Methods: This was a retrospective case series of 110 patients with traumatic ocular injuries who underwent PPV between 2008 to 2020. Patients were grouped into four timing categories: same day (0 days), early (1–7 days), delayed (8–14 days), and late (> 14 days). Multivariable regression models controlling for confounding were implemented to assess the impact of vitrectomy timing on anatomical and functional outcomes. Visual acuity (VA) at baseline and after surgery, proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), and enucleation for each vitrectomy timing category were recorded. Results: Patient demographics and severity of ocular trauma were comparable across timing categories. Final VA in LogMAR was found to have a stepwise worsening as the time of ocular trauma to vitrectomy was increased (p < 0.05). For every one-step increase in the vitrectomy timing category, there was an adjusted 0.24 (CI 0.04–0.44) increase in final VA. No patient in the same day vitrectomy group had an enucleation or PVR, while patients who had late vitrectomies had the largest number of both enucleations and PVR (44.4% and 52.0%, respectively). In adjusted analysis, there was 3.11 increased odds (CI 1.03–9.42) of developing PVR for a one-step increase in vitrectomy timing (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Vitrectomy on the same day of injury has the best final VA, and the lowest incidence rates of PVR and enucleation in comparison to other timing categories, regardless of etiology. The geographic distribution of streams and rivers drives a multitude of patterns and processes in hy-drology, geomorphology, geography and ecology. Therefore, a hydrographic network that accurately delineatesboth small streams and large rivers with equal precision, along with their topographic and topological proper-ties, would be indispensable in the earth sciences. However, no such hydrographic study has been publishedto date. Perhaps equally critical is the absence of small headwater streams in global hydrographies, as theseare estimated to contribute to more than 70 % of overall stream length. We aimed to fill this gap by using theMERIT Hydro Digital Elevation Model at 3 arc-sec (~90 m at the equator) to derive a globally seamless, stan-dardised hydrographic network, the "Hydrography90m", with corresponding stream topographic and topologicalinformation. A central feature of the network is the minimal upstream contributing area, i.e. flow accumulation,of 0.05 km² (or 5 ha) to initiate a stream channel, which allowed us to extract headwater stream channels ingreat detail. By employing a suite of GRASS GIS hydrological modules, we calculated the range-wide upstreamflow accumulation and flow direction to delineate a total of 1.6 million drainage basins, and extracted globallya total of 726 million unique stream segments with their corresponding sub-catchments. In addition, we com-puted stream topographic variables comprising stream slope, gradient, length, and curvature attributes, as wellas stream topological variables to allow for network routing and various stream order classifications. We vali-dated the spatial accuracy and flow accumulation of Hydrography90m against NHDPlus HR, an independent,national high-resolution hydrographic network dataset of the United States. Our validation shows that the newlydeveloped Hydrography90m has the highest spatial precision, and contains more headwater stream channelscompared to three other global hydrographic datasets. This inclusive approach provides a vital, and long-overduebaseline for assessing actual streamflow in headwaters, and opens new research avenues for high-resolution stud-ies of surface water worldwide. Hydrography90m thus offers significant potential to facilitate the assessment offreshwater quantity and quality, inundation risk, biodiversity and conservation, as well as resource managementobjectives in a globally comprehensive and standardised manner. We provide all the computed layers for visual-isation and download in 20° x 20° tiles at https://public.igb-berlin.de/index.php/s/od7neyLcYgi5qRp. While the entire dataset can be used directly in standard GIS applications, we recommend its seamless integration with hydrological modules in open-source QGIS and GRASS GIS software to further customise the data and derive optimal utility from it. Purpose: In this paper, the authors examine how religious and political factors affect a firm's corporate governance diversity policies. Design/methodology/approach: The authors develop five basic empirical models. Model 1 examines how religious beliefs and political affiliation determine whether a firm will establish diversity incentive in its senior executives' performance assessment. Model 2 investigates how the diversity goal, religious beliefs and political affiliation separately affect the level of actual diversity achieved. Model 3 examines how the diversity goal and environmental factors interact to affect the level of actual diversity achieved. Model 4 and Model 5 examine whether the diversity incentive in senior executives' compensation plan and the environmental factors (religious belief and political affiliation) help to reduce the compensation differentials between male and female executives. Findings: The authors find that firms located in more liberal counties with more Mainline Protestants and less Republican voters in the United States are more likely to include workforce diversity as a criterion in evaluating their senior executives. The authors also provide evidence that firms with diversity goals have more female directors, more female senior executives and more minority directors. However, they find no evidence that the compensation differentials between male and female executives are smaller in these firms. Finally, they find that external environment affects the effectiveness of the implementation of the diversity goals. Originality/value: In line withthis branch of research, the authors expand the literate on the link between corporate culture and corporate decision-making by investigating the non-financial performance measures. Besides the corporate decision-making in investment, financial reporting and social responsibilities as documented in prior studies, the authors argue that the religious beliefs and political affiliations could also affect the development and implementation of corporate non-financial performance goals in executive incentive contracts. Background: Schools are in a unique position to ensure that all students meet the current physical activity (PA) recommendations. This study aimed to examine 1st to 3rd grade elementary students' accelerometer measured school day PA in the United States (U.S.) and Finland. Methods: The sample consisted of 200 students (107 girls, 93 boys; ages 6 to 8) and their school day PA was monitored with hip-worn ActiGraph GT3X+ accelerometers across a 5-day school week and the thresholds 100 and 2296 count per minute were used to separate sedentary time, light PA, and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). Results: On an average school day, students were engaged in MVPA for 20.0 min in the U.S. and 24.1 min in Finland. Students' school-day MVPA was 9 to 16 minutes higher during physical education (PE) days compared with non-PE days (U.S: 25.8 vs. 16.6 min/day; Finland: 36.3 vs. 20.1 min/day). Girls had less MVPA and more sedentary time compared with boys in both samples. Conclusion: This study highlights both the role of PE and other school day physical activities in meeting PA guidelines. Background Reports suggest that some persons previously infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) lack detectable immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies. We aimed to determine the proportion IgG seronegative and predictors for seronegativity among persons previously infected with SARS-CoV-2. Methods We analyzed serologic data collected from healthcare workers and first responders in New York City and the Detroit metropolitan area with a history of a positive SARS-CoV-2 reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test result and who were tested for IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 spike protein at least 2 weeks after symptom onset. Results Of 2547 persons with previously confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, 160 (6.3%) were seronegative. Of 2112 previously symptomatic persons, the proportion seronegative slightly increased from 14 to 90 days post symptom onset (P  = .06). The proportion seronegative ranged from 0% among 79 persons previously hospitalized to 11.0% among 308 persons with asymptomatic infections. In a multivariable model, persons who took immunosuppressive medications were more likely to be seronegative (31.9%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 10.7%–64.7%), while participants of non-Hispanic Black race/ethnicity (vs non-Hispanic White; 2.7%; 95% CI, 1.5%–4.8%), with severe obesity (vs under/normal weight; 3.9%; 95% CI, 1.7%–8.6%), or with more symptoms were less likely to be seronegative. Conclusions In our population with previous RT-PCR–confirmed infection, approximately 1 in 16 persons lacked IgG antibodies. Absence of antibodies varied independently by illness severity, race/ethnicity, obesity, and immunosuppressive drug therapy. Background: Beta-blocker therapies for cardiovascular comorbidities are often withheld in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to potential adverse effects on airway obstruction. We carried out a post hoc analysis to determine the efficacy and safety of aclidinium in patients with moderate-to-very severe COPD and increased cardiovascular risk receiving beta-blockers at baseline versus non-users.Methods: ASCENT-COPD was a Phase 4, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study. Patients were randomized 1:1 to aclidinium or placebo twice-daily for up to 3 years. Outcomes included risk of (time to first) major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), all-cause mortality, and lung function over 3 years, and exacerbations over 1 year.Results: Of 3589 patients, 1269 (35.4%) used beta-blockers and 2320 (64.6%) were non-users at baseline. Aclidinium did not statistically increase the risk of MACE (beta-blocker user: hazard ratio 1.01 [95% CI 0.62-1.64]; non-user: 0.80 [0.51-1.24]; interaction P = 0.48) or all-cause mortality (beta-blocker user: 1.13 [0.78-1.64]; non-user: 0.89 [0.62-1.26]; interaction P = 0.35), in patients using beta-blockers. Aclidinium reduced annualized rate of moderate-to-severe COPD exacerbation (beta-blocker user: rate ratio 0.75 [95% CI 0.60-0.94, P = 0.013]; non-user: 0.79 [0.67-0.93, P = 0.005]), delayed time to first exacerbation, and improved lung function versus placebo. Introduction: In the United States, the opioid epidemic claims over 130 lives per day due to overdoses. While the use of opioids in trauma patients has been well-described in the literature, it is unknown whether prescription opioid use is associated with mortality after trauma. We hypothesized that legally obtained prescription opioid consumption would be positively associated with injury-related deaths in the United States.Methods: Cross-sectional time-series data was compiled using state-level mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Multiple Causes of Death database and prescription opioid shipping data to each state using the US Department of Justice Automated Reports and Consolidated Ordering System Retail Drug Summary reports from 2006 to 2017, with opioids shipped used as a proxy for local opioid consumption. Oxycodone and hydrocodone amounts were converted to morphine equivalent doses (MEDs). Our primary outcome was an association between MEDs and injury mortality rates at the state-level. We analyzed total injury-related deaths and subgroups of unintentional deaths, suicides, and homicides. We modeled the data using fixed effects regression to reduce bias from unmeasured differences between states.Results: Data were available for all states and the District of Columbia. Opioid deliveries increased through 2012 and then declined. Total injury-related mortalities have been increasing steadily since 2012. Opioid MEDs did not show a consistent or statistically significant relationship with injury-related mortality, including with any subgroups of unintentional deaths, suicides, and homicides.Conclusion: In every state examined, there was no consistent relationship between the amount of prescription opioids delivered and total injury-related mortality or any subgroups, suggesting that there is not a direct association between prescription opioids and injury-related mortality. This is the first study to combine national mortality and opioid data to investigate the relationship between legally obtained opioids and injury-related mortality. Background Because of the increased risk for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) initially prioritized COVID-19 vaccination for persons in long-term care facilities (LTCF), persons aged ≥65 years, and persons aged 16–64 years with high-risk medical conditions when there is limited vaccine supply. We compared characteristics and severe outcomes of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in the United States between early and later in the pandemic categorized by groups at higher risk of severe COVID-19. Methods Observational study of sampled patients aged ≥18 years who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and admitted to one of 14 academic hospitals in the United States during March–June and October–December 2020. Demographic and clinical information were gathered from electronic health record data. Results Among 647 patients, 91% met ≥1 of the following risk factors for severe COVID-19 [91% March-June (n = 434); 90% October–December (n = 213)]; 19% were LTCF residents, 45% were aged ≥65-years, and 84% had ≥1 high-risk condition. The proportion of patients who resided in a LTCF declined significantly (25% vs 6%) from early to later pandemic periods. Compared with patients at lower risk for severe COVID-19, in-hospital mortality was higher among patients at high risk for severe COVID-19 (20% vs 7%); these differences were consistently observed between March–June and October–December. Conclusions Most adults hospitalized with COVID-19 were those recommended to be prioritized for vaccination based on risk for developing severe COVID-19. The study examined the effectiveness of a 4-week classroom-based, technology-assisted physical activity break program on elementary students' reaction time, response inhibition control, and mathematics performance. Participants included 40 (8–9-year-old) elementary school students located in the mid-south United States (US) who were cluster-randomised and allocated to the intervention (n = 19; 14 boys, 5 girls) and school-as-usual (n = 21; 17 boys, 4 girls) groups. The intervention group played FitNexx active video game 10-minutes daily before mathematics classes. Data collection included mathematics performance test and cued Go/No-Go test for inhibitory control and reaction time. The findings showed that the intervention had a positive effect on students' reaction time (F[2,39] = 29.98, p <.001, η2 =.45) and response inhibition control (F[2,39] = 21.02, p <.001, η2 =.36). No effect was found on mathematics performance (F[2, 35] =.51, p =.479, η2 =.02). The study aimed to analyse the anatomical, perioperative and postoperative outcomes of the robotic-assisted sacrocolpopexy (RSCP). After obtaining Institutional Review Board (IRB #19-0167) approval, our retrospective case series included 144 consecutive patients that underwent an RSCP for symptomatic stage II pelvic organ prolapse (POP) or symptomatic/asymptomatic stage III/IV POP. Patient information included operative parameters, perioperative and postoperative complications, readmissions and reoperation. Demographics and baseline characteristics were summarised by frequencies and percentages for categorical variables, and by mean/median, standard deviation, and ranges for continuous variables. In our study, concomitant surgeries with sacrocolpopexy consisted of hysterectomy, Burch colposuspension and midurethral sling. The anatomical success rate was 87.5% and the reoperation rate was 10.4%. The mean follow-up time was 12.5 (±8.7) months. Intraoperative complications 13 (9%) were bowel serosal abrasion, bladder wall injuries, trochar site bleeds, subcutaneous emphysema and a retroperitoneal haematoma. Our results suggest that RSCP is a feasible and safe approach for the treatment of POP with a low complication rate and favourable medium-term outcomes regarding anatomical and symptomatic results. What is already known on this subject? Pelvic organ prolapse affects more than 25% of women in the United States. Apical and anterior compartment defects are challenging cases and sacrocolpopexy is considered the gold standard treatment option for apical and anterior compartment defects. Background The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has affected stroke care globally. In this study, we aim to evaluate the impact of the current pandemic on racial disparities among stroke patients receiving mechanical thrombectomy (MT). Methods We used the prospectively collected data in the Stroke Thrombectomy and Aneurysm Registry from 12 thrombectomy-capable stroke centers in the US and Europe. We included acute stroke patients who underwent MT between January 2017 and May 2020. We compared baseline features, vascular risk factors, location of occlusion, procedural metrics, complications, and discharge outcomes between patients presenting before (before February 2020) and those who presented during the pandemic (February to May 2020). Results We identified 2083 stroke patients: of those 235 (1 1.3%) underwent MT during the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared with pre-pandemic, stroke patients who received MT during the pandemic had longer procedure duration (44 vs 38 min, P=0.006), longer length of hospitalization (6 vs 4 days, P<0.001), and higher in-hospital mortality (18.7% vs 11%, P<0.001). Importantly, there was a lower number of African American patients undergoing MT during the COVID-19 pandemic (609 (32.9%) vs 56 (23.8%); P=0.004). Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the care process for stroke patients receiving MT globally. Background: Previous studies have shown that primary stroke centers (PSCs) have shorter door to needle (DTN) time than non-PSCs hospitals. We aimed to validate these findings in a high-volume telestroke network. Methods: The prospectively maintained data on all consecutive stroke patients who received intravenous alteplase (tissue plasminogen activator [tPA]) between July 2016 and November 2019 through a large telestroke program in Southeast United States was reviewed. Wilcoxon Rank-sum (Mann–Whitney) test was used to compare median times between different groups. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to assess the association between presenting to PSC and having DTN ≤45 and ≤60 min. Results: During the study period, 1,517 patients received tPA, 874 (57.6%) at PSC sites. There were more white patients in the PSC group (64.3%) compared to non-PSC group (58%) (p < 0.001). Other characteristics were similar in patients in both groups. Time metrics were as follows, Door to telestroke page: 16 min versus 13 min (p < 0.001), telestroke page to tPA recommendation: 23 min versus 22 min (p = 0.975), tPA recommendation to tPA bolus administration: 13 min versus 10 min (p < 0.001), and DTN 58 min versus 49 min (p < 0.001) at non-PSC and PSC sites, respectively. On multivariate analysis, there were significantly higher odds for achieving a DTN ≤45 min (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.8–4.4, p < 0.001) and DTN ≤60 min (OR 3, 95% CI 2.1–4.3, p < 0.001) in the PSC group. The article presents accounting research on the reaction of investors to the dual financial statements required of foreign corporations by the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) in which earnings stated under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) must be reconciled to the U.S. accounting standards Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). It is noted that the SEC voted to eliminate this requirement in 2007 Securities trading volume for firms which reconciled earnings from IFRS to GAAP in 2005-2006 and from 1994-2005. It is found that earnings reconciliation was directly correlated to abnormal trading volume, primarily generated by first time users of IFRS with low levels of institutional investment.

Background The transradial approach (TRA) has gained increasing popularity for neuroendovascular procedures. However, the experience with TRA in neuroangiography is still in early stages in most centers, and the safety and feasibility of this approach have not been well established. The purpose of this study is to report the safety and feasibility of TRA for neuroendovascular procedures. Methods We reviewed charts from six institutions in the USA to include consecutive patients who underwent diagnostic or interventional neuroendovascular procedures through TRA from July 2018 to July 2019. Collected data included baseline characteristics, procedural variables, complications, and whether there was a crossover to transfemoral access. Results A total of 2203 patients were included in the study (age 56.1±15.2, 60.8% women). Of these, 1697 (77%) patients underwent diagnostic procedures and 506 (23%) underwent interventional procedures. Successfully completed procedures included aneurysm coiling (n=97), flow diversion (n=89), stent-assisted coiling (n=57), balloon-assisted coiling (n=19), and stroke thrombectomy (n=76). Crossover to femoral access was required in 114 (5.2%). There were no major complications related to the radial access site. Minor complications related to access site were seen in 14 (0.6%) patients. Conclusion In this early stage of transforming to the 'radial-first' approach for neuroendovascular procedures, TRA was safe with low complication rates for both diagnostic and interventional procedures. This study compared students' expectations, perceptions, and grades in two undergraduate technology management courses at a university in the United States. One course was a technical course taught by a single instructor in an online course section and in a face-to-face section, and the second was a nontechnical course taught by a different instructor in an online and in a face-toface section. Different concerns were evident between online and face-to-face students and between those in a technical or nontechnical section of a course. Background: Infection is the most common cause of mortality within the first year after lung transplantation (LTx). The management of perioperative antibiotic therapy is a major issue, but little is known about worldwide practices.Methods: We sent by email a survey dealing with 5 daily clinical vignettes concerning perioperative antibiotic therapy to 180 LTx centers around the world. The invitation and a weekly reminder were sent to lung transplant specialists for a single consensus answer per center during a 3-month period.Results: We received a total of 99 responses from 24 countries, mostly from Western Europe (n = 46) and the USA (n = 34). Systematic screening for bronchial recipient colonization before LTx was mostly performed with sputum samples (72%), regardless of the underlying lung disease. In recipients without colonization, antibiotics with activity against gram-negative bacteria resistant strains (piperacillin / tazobactam, cefepime, ceftazidime, carbapenems) were reported in 72% of the centers, and antibiotics with activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (mainly vancomycin) were reported in 38% of the centers. For these recipients, the duration of antibiotics reported was 7 days (33%) or less (26%) or stopped when cultures of donor and recipients were reported negatives (12%). In recipients with previous colonization, antibiotics were adapted to the susceptibility of the most resistant strain and given for at least 14 days (67%).Conclusion: Practices vary widely around the world, but resistant bacterial strains are mostly targeted even if no colonization occurs. This paper evaluates the international spillover effects of large-scale asset purchases (LSAPs) using an estimated two-country dynamic stochastic general-equilibrium model with nominal and real rigidities and portfolio balance effects. Portfolio balance effects arise from imperfect substitutability between short- and long-term bond portfolios in each country, as well as between domestic and foreign bonds within these portfolios. We show that LSAPs in the United States lower long-term yields and stimulate economic activity not only in the United States, but also in the rest of the world (ROW) economy. This occurs despite the currency appreciation in the ROW and the resulting deterioration in their trade balance. The key for this result is the decline in the ROW term premia through the portfolio balance channel, as the relative demand for ROW long-term bonds increases following an LSAP in the United States. Our model indicates that US asset purchases that generate the same output effect as US conventional monetary policy has larger international spillovers due to stronger portfolio balance effects. We also show that international openness in financial markets reduces the stimulatory effects of LSAPs in the originating country, while increasing their international spillover effects. Infectious endocarditis is a highly morbid disease with approximately 43,000 cases per year in the United States. The modified Duke Criteria have poor sensitivity; however, advances in diagnostic imaging provide new tools for clinicians to make what can be an elusive diagnosis. There are a number of risk stratification calculators that can help guide providers in medical and surgical management. Patients who inject drugs pose unique challenges for the health care system as their addiction, which is often untreated, can lead to recurrent infections after valve replacement. There is a need to increase access to medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorders in this population. Recent studies suggest that oral and depo antibiotics may be viable alternatives to conventional intravenous therapy. Additionally, shorter courses of antibiotic therapy are potentially equally efficacious in patients who are surgically managed. The article presents an examination of the trading volume reaction to the earnings reconciliation of international accounting standards (IAS) to U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Included in the sample are foreign firms in the U.S. that use IAS as their primary reporting standard and reconciled their earnings to U.S. GAAP in the period of 1995-2004. Findings show that the absolute magnitude of earnings reconciliation is significantly and positively associated with abnormal trading volume both in the U.S. markets and in the local markets around 20-F filing dates. It is further stated that the results have implications for recent SEC in the elimination of the reconciliation requirement for foreign firms that use international financial reporting standards.

During the last 20 years, there has been an increasing awareness that the U.S. is falling behind in its mathematics education of primary and secondary school students. For those who teach mathematics at the community college level, the deficiencies in mathematics education are painfully evident by the number of students requiring remedial math courses. During the past decade, Singapore has been among the top-performing countries in the world in mathematics education according to the "Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study" (TIMSS) and "The Program for International Student Assessment" (PISA) reports. However, Singapore has not always been a top-ranked country. Rather, it has demonstrated a marked improvement in ranking over the past two decades as the result of a total reevaluation of its mathematics instruction program in the 1980s. Because of Singapore's success, some U.S. schools have adopted Singapore's approach to teaching mathematics. The International Education subcommittee of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) contend that lessons learned in high-performing countries might be applied to improve math-skill retention of community college students taking remedial mathematics courses in preparation for college-level mathematics. Although there are several factors contributing to the success of Singapore's mathematics education system, the main focus of this article is on their primary school curriculum, which is based on problem-solving through visualization and model-drawing strategies.

Hurricane risk varies widely across the different regions of the United States. The spatial variation of the risk could be further impacted by future climate scenarios and the consideration of impact of climate change on future regional hurricane risk is necessary for long-term planning of built infrastructure. Therefore, climate-dependent hurricane risks across eight different locations of the US south and east coast are investigated in this study. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the risks, hurricane risk is assessed using three different metrics, including wind speed, annual individual building loss ratio, and regional loss, each of which can provide valuable insight for different risk management context. We investigate how the level of household indebtedness affects the monetary transmission mechanism in the U.S. economy. Using state‐dependent local projection methods, we find that the effects of monetary policy are less powerful during periods of high household debt. In particular, the impact of monetary policy shocks is smaller on GDP, consumption, residential investment, house prices, and household debt during a high‐debt state. We then build a partial equilibrium model of borrower households with financial constraints to rationalize these facts. Introduction: Hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis (ATTRv; v for variant) is an underdiagnosed, progressive, and fatal multisystemic disease with a heterogenous clinical phenotype that is caused by TTR gene mutations that destabilize the TTR protein, resulting in its misfolding, aggregation, and deposition in tissues throughout the body. Areas covered: Inotersen, an antisense oligonucleotide inhibitor, was recently approved in the United States and Europe for the treatment of the polyneuropathy of ATTRv based on the positive results obtained in the pivotal phase 3 trial, NEURO-TTR. This review will discuss the mechanism of action of inotersen and its pharmacology, clinical efficacy, and safety and tolerability. A PubMed search using the terms 'inotersen,' 'AG10,' 'antisense oligonucleotide,' 'hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis,' 'familial amyloid polyneuropathy,' and 'familial amyloid cardiomyopathy' was performed, and the results were screened for the most relevant English language publications. The bibliographies of all retrieved articles were manually searched to identify additional studies of relevance. Expert opinion: Inotersen targets the disease-forming protein, TTR, and has been shown to improve quality of life and neuropathy progression in patients with stage 1 or 2 ATTRv with polyneuropathy. Background: Workplace abuse, including sexual harassment, is frequently experienced worldwide and is related to adverse mental health outcomes, and injuries. Flight attendants are an understudied occupational group and are susceptible to harassment due to working in a feminized, client-facing occupation with few protections or sanctioned responses against aggressive behaviors. Objective: We investigated the relationship between workplace abuse and health in a cohort of cabin crew. We also aimed to characterize perpetrator profiles. Methods: We conducted our study among 4,459U.S. and Canada-based participants from the Harvard Flight Attendant Health Study using multivariate logistic regression. Our exposures of interest were episodes of workplace abuse in the past year. We evaluated several mental and physical health outcomes, including depression, fatigue, musculoskeletal injuries, and general workplace injuries. Results: We report that exposures to verbal abuse, sexual harassment, and sexual assault are common among cabin crew, with 63, 26, and 2% of respondents, respectively, reporting harassment in the past year alone. Workplace abuse was associated with depression, sleep disturbances, and musculoskeletal injuries among male and female crew, with a trend toward increasing odds ratios (ORs) given a higher frequency of events. For example, sexual harassment was related to an increased odds for depression (OR = 1.91, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.51–2.30), which increased in a dose response-like manner among women reporting harassment once (OR = 1.44, 95% CI: 0.93–1.95), 2–3 times (OR = 1.83, 95% CI: 1.29–2.38), and 4 or more times (OR = 4.12, 95% CI: 3.18–5.06). We found that passengers were the primary perpetrators of abuse. Conclusions: Our study is the first to comprehensively characterize workplace abuse and harassment and its relation to health in a largely female customer-facing workforce. The strong associations with health outcomes observed in our study highlights the question of how workplace policies can be altered to mitigate prevalent abuses. Clinicians could also consider how jobs with high emotional labor demands may predispose people to adverse health outcomes, educate patients regarding their psychological/physical responses and coping strategies, and be aware of signs of distress in patients working in such occupations in order to direct them to the appropriate treatments and therapies. Background: Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) accounts for around 95% of bladder cancers and is the 4th most common cancer among men and the tenth most common in women, in the US. There is a constant need to clarify current TCC incidence and mortality rates among different population groups for better clinical practice guidelines. We aimed to describe the TCC incidence and incidence-based mortality by demographic and tumor-related characteristics over the last 40 years in the US.Methods: We obtained data from the SEER 18 registries to study TCC cases that were diagnosed between the years 1973 and 2014. We calculated incidence rates and incidence-based mortality rates in different demographic and tumor-related characteristics and expressed rates by 100,000 person-years. We then calculated the annual changes in incidence and incidence-based mortality rates and displayed them as annual percent changes (APCs).Results: There were 182,114 patients with TCC between 1973 and 2014 in the United States. Overall incidence rates of TCC increased 0.16% (95% CI, 0.02-0.30, p = .02) per year over the study period. However, the incidence declined significantly since 2007; (95%CI,-1.89- -0.77, p < .001), except among the elderly and African Americans, which increased significantly over the study period. Overall TCC mortality rates did not change over the study period. However, since 2000 it started to decrease significantly.Conclusion: TCC incidence and incidence-based mortality rates had been showing significant increases over the previous decades. However, significant declines in both incidence and incidence-based mortality rates have been observed over the recent years, except in some patients with certain racial groups. Improved understanding of the etiological and ecological factors of TCC could lead to further declines in incidence and incidence-based mortality rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2007, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission voted to eliminate the 20-F reconciliation requirement for foreign issuers listing their stocks or bonds in the U.S. capital markets and preparing their financial statements under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Distinct from prior research focusing on the equity market, we investigate the impact of eliminating the 20-F reconciliation on the cost of debt in the U.S. listed foreign bond market. Employing a difference-in-differences approach, we document that bond yield spread increases for foreign IFRS bond issuers after the elimination of 20-F reconciliation. The results suggest that bondholders, on average, view the elimination of 20-F reconciliation as an information loss. Cross-sectional analyses reveal that the positive association between the elimination of 20-F reconciliation and bond yield spread is more pronounced for firms with greater stock return volatility, lower institutional ownership, weaker reporting incentives, and higher country-level investor protection.
