BackgroundThis study prospectively assesses the mental health outcomes among women seeking abortions, by comparing women having later abortions with women denied abortions, up to 2 years post-abortion seeking.MethodWe present the first 2 years of a 5-year telephone interview study that is following 956 women who sought an abortion from 30 facilities throughout the USA. We use adjusted linear mixed-effects regression analyses to assess whether symptoms of depression and anxiety, as measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory-short form and the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders Patient Health Questionnaire, differ over time among women denied an abortion due to advanced gestational age, compared with women who received abortions.ResultsBaseline predicted mean depressive symptom scores for women denied abortion (3.07) were similar to women receiving an abortion just below the gestational limit (2.86). Depressive symptoms declined over time, with no difference between groups. Initial predicted mean anxiety symptoms were higher among women denied care (2.59) than among women who had an abortion just below the gestational limit (1.91). Anxiety levels in the two groups declined and converged after 1 year.ConclusionsWomen who received an abortion had similar or lower levels of depression and anxiety than women denied an abortion. The third Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III) of the National Cholesterol Education Program defines clinical criteria for diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome, which increases cardiovascular risk and is a target for therapy. We analysed the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III; 1988–94) to determine how many US adults meet these criteria and are recommended for lipid-modifying drug therapy by ATP III. NHANES III data were used to estimate the number of individuals with the metabolic syndrome and the number recommended for treatment by ATP III, based on 1990 census data. An estimated 36.3 million (23%) US adults have the metabolic syndrome. Of these, 84% met the criterion for obesity, 76% for blood pressure, 75% for HDL-C, 74% for triglycerides and 41% for glucose. Most (54%) are in the higher risk categories of ATP III, yet only 39% overall are recommended for drug therapy by ATP III cutpoints; of these, most will achieve LDL-C targets with reductions of 35–40%. Of the 15.3 million individuals with the metabolic syndrome and triglycerides ≥2.26 mmol/l (200 mg/dl), non-HDL-C is above ATP III recommendations in 11.6 million. Of the large number of Americans with the metabolic syndrome, ATP III recommends drug therapy for only a minority, because LDL-C typically is not substantially elevated. Instead, high triglycerides and low HDL-C are more common; clinical trial data are needed to determine whether optimal therapy should focus on reductions in LDL-C or on comprehensive improvements to the lipid profile. This article seeks to provide a profile of internships used in communication master's degree programs in the U.S. An internship is defined as receiving graduate credit for practical experience gained outside the classroom, with some degree of supervision by a faculty member. Based upon the data presented, experiential opportunities in communication serve to connect theory and practice. The nature of an internship at the graduate level appears to be more complex than at the undergraduate level. The formal paper appears to be the most common means for evaluating graduate internships. Formal papers are consistently used in academia to measure student understanding of concepts and experiences. The size of the institution and graduate program seems to have no affect on the option of offering internships or graduate students electing to use them in their programs of study.

Strawberry disease is a subchronic, non-debilitating, and non-fatal inflammatory skin disease of rainbow trout that has been recognized for the past 25 years. Morbidity ranges up to 80% and the disease affects fishes from 15 cm in length to brood stock size. Epizootiological data indicate that strawberry disease usually appears. first in the autumn and reaches peak incidence during the following winter and spring. Data also indicate that the disease is found only in certain trout farms in the western and Pacific north-western regions of the United States. Although the cause of strawberry disease is unknown, the normal clinical course of 8 weeks can be reduced by oral treatment with oxytetracycline. Clinical signs include appearance of bright red, raised, circumscribed, ulcerated and indurated lesions in the skin that usually range up to 3 cm or more in diameter. Microscopically, the disease is characterized as a subchronic, focal, non-suppurative dermatitis with ulceration and extensive infiltration of mononuclear inflammatory cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CR has been linked with improved health and longevity in scores of animal studies. The Comprehensive Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE) is a unique study of CR in non-obese humans. Phase 1 consisted of 3 single-site human CR studies at Tufts University (n = 38), Washington University (n = 28; Wash U) and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center (n = 32; PBRC) (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m², mean age 35-55.4 yrs). The CR interventions were 10-30% CR for 6-12 mo. We examined reported self-selected intakes of fiber, protein, and 17 micronutrients from 7-d food diaries at baseline and 2 time points during CR. Nutritional adequacy was evaluated using the EAR cut-point method, in all CR groups except Wash U (no change), the mean percentage of adequate nutrient intakes was higher by repeated measures mixed model ANOVA (p< 0.039, Tufts; p<0.001, PBRC) during the CR period versus baseline. Intakes of 7 nutrients, including protein, were adequate at baseline and remained so. For most of the other nutrients, the percent of participants with adequate intakes during CR exceeded that at baseline. The intake of nutrients during CR was not associated with level of CR. We conclude: individuals who have been previously instructed on CR are able to self-select a CR diet that is nutritionally equal or superior to their baseline ad libitum diet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
