Sporting culture often celebrates mental toughness and chides weakness, which can stigmatize mental health issues. While some sport organizations have prioritized addressing mental well-being, referees have been ignored. Referees work in high-pressure environments; thus, the need to understand, destigmatize, and normalize the conversation around mental health within the referee community and the larger sporting system is important. Because the prevalence of stress-related issues is greater for women, this study focused on female referees' well-being, interviewing 20 female U.S. basketball referees via a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Participants represented various geographical regions in the United States and officiated at levels ranging from high school to professional. Findings revealed Gendered Aggressions negatively impacted the referees, mental health issues are Stigmatized, and more Resources and Support are needed. Results also indicated that officiating can be Cathartic. Suggestions for addressing the referee shortage and improving the officiating experience are included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which compared the coverage of female and male athletes and coaches on the sports news website, ESPN.com during the 2007 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments in the U.S. Results of the study found that online media coverage for women athletes differs from that of men athletes on the main page. However, it found that the amount of coverage given to women's sports is equitable to that of men's sports.

This preliminary investigation was undertaken to determine how well international student-athletes adjusted to college relative to their domestic teammates and the general student body. The results revealed that international student-athletes were significantly more well-adjusted to college than international nonathletes. International student-athletes adjusted to college as well as students and student-athletes from the United States. Results should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size. Welfare recipients in the United States are three times as likely to suffer from depression and anxiety as average Americans. Although affordable pharmacotherapy options are readily available in more affluent parts of society, welfare programs are ineffective in facilitating diagnosis and therapy that could help the affected improve their lives and even ultimately become gainfully employed and off taxpayersupported welfare programs.
