The Australian psyllidBoreioglycaspis melaleucaeis a biological control agent ofMelaleuca quinquenerviain Florida (USA) but was observed attackingM. quinquenerviatrees in southern California (USA). The cricetine rodents Peromyscus leucopus and P. maniculatus are key reservoirs for several zoonotic diseases in North America. We determined the complete circular mitochondrial genome sequences of representatives of 3 different stock colonies of P. leucopus, one stock colony of P. maniculatus and two wild populations of P. leucopus. The genomes were syntenic with that of the murids Mus musculus and Rattus norvegicus. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that these two Peromyscus species are sister taxa in a clade with P. polionotus and also uncovered a distinction between P. leucopus populations in the eastern and the central United States. In one P. leucopus lineage four extended regions of mitochondrial pseudogenes were identified in the nuclear genome. RNA-seq analysis revealed transcription of the entire genome and differences from controls in the expression profiles of mitochondrial genes in the blood, but not in liver or brain, of animals infected with the zoonotic pathogen Borrelia hermsii. PCR and sequencing of the D-loop of the mitochondrion identified 32 different haplotypes among 118 wild P. leucopus at a Connecticut field site. These findings help to further establish P. leucopus as a model organism for studies of emerging infectious diseases, ecology, and in other disciplines.

Flanders virus (FLAV) and Hart Park virus (HPV) are rhabdoviruses that circulate in mosquito-bird cycles in the eastern and western United States, respectively, and constitute the only two North American representatives of the Hart Park serogroup. Previously, it was suggested that FLAV is unique among the rhabdoviruses in that it contains two pseudogenes located between the P and M genes, while the cognate sequence for HPV has been lacking. Herein, we demonstrate that FLAV and HPV do not contain pseudogenes in this region, but encode three small functional proteins designated as U1-U3 that apparently arose by gene duplication. To further investigate the U1-U3 region, we conducted the first large-scale evolutionary analysis of a member of the Hart Park serogroup by analyzing over 100 spatially and temporally distinct FLAV isolates. The goal of the NCBI Reference Sequence (RefSeq) project is to provide the single best non-redundant and comprehensive collection of naturally occurring biological molecules, representing the central dogma. Nucleotide and protein sequences are explicitly linked on a residue-by-residue basis in this collection. Ideally all molecule types will be available for each well-studied organism, but the initial database collection pragmatically includes only those molecules and organisms that are most readily identified. Thus different amounts of information are available for different organisms at any given time. Furthermore, for some organisms additional intermediate records are provided when the genome sequence is not yet finished. The collection is supplied by NCBI through three distinct pipelines in addition to collaborations with community groups. The collection is curated on an ongoing basis. Lung surfactant lowers the surface tension but surfactant proteins also have other functions. Surfactant protein A (SP-A) has a well-defined role in innate immunity. The gene locus for human SP-A genes is in chromosome 10q21 through q24 and consists of two highly homologous functional SP-A genes (SP-A1 and SP-A2) and a pseudogene. Several alleles that differ by a single amino acid have been identified for both SP-A genes. The SP-A gene locus has been shown to be sufficiently polymorphic for genetic studies in the American population. In this study, we analysed the SP-A allele frequencies in a Finnish population (n = 790) and found them to differ from the frequencies observed in US. Furthermore, we describe several new alleles for both SP-A genes. The heterozygosity indices and polymorphism information content values ranged between 0.50--0.62 indicating that SP-A gene locus is polymorphic enough for studies associating the locus with pulmonary diseases.
