Most researchers and the Census Bureau expect the U.S. population to hit the 300 million mark sometime in October. This will make the United States the world's third most populous nation--behind China and India. In this article, the author found several websites dealing with the specific 300 million target, population growth in general, and teaching about population. Several of the sites he reviewed, such as Population Connection (formerly Zero Population Growth), have very definite views on population, which he have tried to identify in the description. Furthermore, some of the sites that feature lesson plans and other teacher or student resources do not have anything specifically on the 300 million date, but he included them because the resources and lessons can be applied to the target date by teachers and students.

This population study examines possible reasons for a severe underestimation of Latino-origin group populations in 2000 and introduces several alternative methods for estimating these Latino subgroup populations. The new simulated estimates for the Latino subgroups, based on the 2000 Public Use Microdata Sample from the 2000 U.S. Census, are presented at the national level and for selected states and cities. The figures included here represent some of the first alternative estimates for Latino-origin groups at the subnational level. Differences between official 2000 enumerations and estimated counts were larger for smaller Latino subgroups. The 2000 population of Dominicans should have been nearly 1 million rather than the approximately 799,768 the Census recorded. The estimates also gave 42.6% more Salvadorans, 47% more Central Americans, and 41.3% more South Americans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the increasing emphasis being placed on the quality of our teacher talent pool, it is becoming more important for teacher educators to know as much about the population it serves and the demographic trends. In doing so it may prove to be a microcosm for the nation. Over 18,000 ACT cases were studied representing the 1986-87 Kansas data base. This study provides information on prospective teacher education students and how they compare with other prospective students. The article discusses on the national surveys that examines the use and awareness of 20 population education materials of two national samples of population education teachers in the U.S. The surveys concluded that secondary school classrooms have not maximized the use of these educational materials. Researchers found out that necessary training of teachers in population education increases the use of these materials. The surveys also determined that in both national samples, the three most used books are 'Man and His Environment, 'Man and Environment,' and 'Environment and Population.'
