This study examines the relationships between college students' attitudes regarding gender roles and gendered violence and their perpetration of intimate partner violence. College students perpetrate an extremely high level of physical abuse against intimate partners, with prevalence rates ranging between 20 and 50%. Since intimate partner violence is such a widespread problem within this population, it is important to understand the etiology of this problem. Although findings from previous studies demonstrate associations between gender and violence related attitudes and intimate partner violence, research to date fails to fully explore these associations. In an attempt to fill this void, the current study looks at attitudes before and after the year perpetration was reported to determine whether attitudes precede or antecede perpetration. The data used for this project are taken from the Longitudinal Study of Violence against Women: Victimization and Perpetration among College Students in a State-Supported University in the United States, 1990-1995, which includes a sample of 1,580 female and 851 male students surveyed yearly throughout their college careers. Analyses are run for the entire sample and separately for females and males.
