Background: There is growing attention to individual-level patient social needs such as unstable housing and food insecurity. Such considerations, however, have historically been the purview of public health and have not been a priority of more traditional health care delivery organizations, such as acute care hospitals. Purpose: The purpose of this studywas to examinewhether the presence of patient and family advisory boards (PFABs) among acute care community hospitals was associated with screening for and programs to address patient social needs. Methods: We used a secondary data set derived fromthe American Hospital Association's 2020 and 2021 annual surveys, along with multinomial and negative binomial regression models to assess the relationship between the presence/absence of a PFAB and the likelihood of offering and the number of areas addressed by social needs screening programs. Results: More than half (55.9%) of all responding hospitals reported having a PFAB in 2020 (55.9%) and 2021 (52.7%). The presence of a PFAB among hospitals was significantly associated with patient social needs screening, more areas addressed by programs, and more types of partners to address these needs. Conclusions: Community hospitals with a PFAB have more robust programs and partnerships to address patient social needs. Practice Implications: Hospital leaders should consider going beyond simply establishing programs to address social needs but also consider comprehensiveness of these programs to recognize the intersectionality of social needs. One way to do this is to formally establish a PFAB to help hospitals better identify and prioritize the needs in local communities and design social needs programs/solutions that are patient- and family-centric. The importance of knowledge management (KM) in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry has risen with the improvement of information and communication technologies. However, the construction industry still struggles to capture and disseminate lessons learned. The present research explores this issue by using interviews and an online questionnaire to provide updated information on lessons learned procedures and their challenges in United States (US) construction companies. To do this, the authors have gathered industry professionals’ perceptions about lessons learned and methods used in their companies for harnessing and disseminating the knowledge generated by them. Our findings indicate that post-project evaluations are frequently conducted, utilize a two-step approach (review of materials followed by meetings), and are mainly organized by project managers. Most often, only key project team members are present in meetings to create a safe environment for discussion. Moreover, our findings echo previous research on the dissemination and reuse of lessons learned, indicating that these procedures are scattered and, most of the time, the information is not effectively reutilized. This suggests that US construction companies still need to revisit how information from lessons learned is currently being harnessed, stored, and especially shared (within and between companies) so that information can be effectively transformed into knowledge that can advance the AEC industry’s productivity. Objective: To examine serving size knowledge in African Americans and how it is related to body mass index (BMI). Design: Serving size knowledge of food commonly consumed by African Americans was assessed by asking the subjects to select the amount of food considered to be a single serving size by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. Seventeen food items were tested, and the amounts selected were weighed. Body mass index was estimated from measured height and weight. Setting: Churches. Participants: Ninety-five African American women. Main Outcome Measures: Amount of food selected and BMI. Analyses: The amount of food selected was compared with the respective standard serving using the 1-sample Wilcoxon signed rank test. The association between BMI and the amount selected was assessed by logistic regression. Results: The subjects significantly overestimated (P = 0.001 to 0.02) serving sizes for cornflakes, apple, watermelon, butter, whole milk, chips, and regular soda. Body mass index was significantly associated with overestimation of cornflakes, butter, cookies, and macaroni and cheese (P = 0.01 to 0.03), and the odds ratio for overestimating these food items was 1.46-1.65 times greater per 5-unit increase in BMI. Conclusions and Implications: African American women overestimated the serving sizes for 7 of the food items tested, and 4 of the estimates were correlated with BMI. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a method to incorporate teaching about religion into K-12 social studies classes. A central tenet of social studies education is preparing students to be engaged citizens, and religious literacy is essential to this. Yet, teachers often feel uncomfortable teaching about religion. One way to approach this is by centering discussion about religion around understanding who our neighbors are. Design/methodology/approach - This paper employs the Inquiry Design Model to outline lessons for early, middle and upper grades, each centered around the compelling question, "Who are my Muslim neighbors?" Beginning with a picturebook depicting a Muslim American child, the lessons explore supporting questions with academically appropriate sources, culminate with an evidence-based response to the compelling question and suggest an opportunity for students to take informed action. Findings - While religion does not appear in many social studies standards, teaching about religion has strong connections to civics standards. In an increasingly diverse USA, students need to understand the beliefs and religious behaviors of their neighbors and how those traditions provide a sense of belonging within the faith community. This paper provides the necessary tools for teachers to teach this content. In addition to teaching these as outlined here, teachers can also select resources from across the three units in order to customize an inquiry for a particular group of students. Originality/value - Teachers are often hesitant to teach about religion. This paper offers a concrete method for doing so. Purpose - The recent motion picture Selma infused fresh interest - and controversy - into the political and emotional peak of America's modern Civil Rights Movement. Ava DuVernay, the film's director, faced criticism for her exclusion of the Jewish presence from the movie's portrayal of the March 21, 1965 Voting Rights March. The recent attention presents a teachable moment and new energy for thinking deeply about this pivotal event in America's past. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - The authors provide valuable historical domain knowledge surrounding the 1965 Voting Rights March, present the requisite plans and curriculum resources for implementing wisepractice instructional strategies, and explore the rationale underpinning the inquiry-based activities. Findings - The authors share innovative approaches, at the secondary and elementary levels, integrating historical domain knowledge with renewed interest in the 1965 Voting Rights March to create powerful teaching-and-learning experiences. The approaches are innovative because they contain dynamic curriculum materials and reflect wise-practice use of historical photographs within the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards. Practical implications - The approaches shared here are centered around questioning, a key to student learning. The lessons feature the development of questions, both from teachers and students, as classes work collaboratively to interpret a potentially powerful historical photograph and use historical events to practice thinking deeply about important topics. Originality/value - Social studies classrooms are ideal educational spaces to develop and practice the analytical skills and dispositions students need to meet the challenge of critiquing visual information that concerns complex public issues, such as the role of religion in society. The purpose of this research is to investigate air service for passengers with disabilities (PxWD) in the US, including quantitative analysis of US DOT data and qualitative analysis of survey data. The results indicate that current air service does not adequately serve PxWD. Quantitative analysis indicates that the number and rate of disability complaints significantly exceed the number and rate of general consumer complaints for air service. Quantitative analysis also indicates that disability complaint rates are different for different airlines, and are increasing. Qualitative analysis of survey data from PxWD identified loss of or damage to wheelchairs, training, long wait times, and aircraft accessibility as major problem areas. The growing number and rate of disability complaints, coupled with projected increases in the number of PxWD, suggest that the airline industry and individual airlines need to identify ways to improve service for PxWD. • Ponderosa pine is experiencing natural regeneration failure from seed. • We found regeneration failure in 29% of forests, in absence of severe disturbance. • The climate conditions leading to regeneration failure will intensify in the future. • There is high potential for regeneration failure to expand across latitudes. • Regeneration failure is a widespread and active threat to forest persistence. As climate changes in coming decades, ponderosa pine forest persistence may be increasingly dictated by their regeneration. Sustained regeneration failure has been predicted for forests of the southwestern US (SWUS) even in absence of stand-replacing wildfire, but regeneration in undisturbed and lightly disturbed forests has been studied infrequently and at a limited number of locations. We characterized 77 ponderosa pine sites in 7 SWUS locations, documented regeneration occurring over the past ∼ 20 years, and utilized gridded meteorological estimates and water balance modeling to determine the climate and environmental conditions associated with regeneration failure (R0). Of these sites, 29 % were R0, illuminating that regeneration failure in these forests is widespread. R0 sites were distinguished by high above- and belowground heat loading, loss of cool-season climate, and high soil moisture variation. Explanatory variables had high accuracy in identifying R0 sites, and illustrate the climate-driven pathway by which regeneration failure has occurred in the SWUS. Regeneration failure has high potential to increase in a warmer, more hydrologically variable climate, and expand regionally from lower to higher latitudes. Yet, we also found that human management interventions were associated with environmental conditions that avoided regeneration failure. To counteract regeneration-associated forest declines, interventions will need to influence climate-driven environmental change by adjusting forest characteristics at local scales. Purpose - Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr is a timeless book well-known among K-6 teachers, students, librarians and book-lovers throughout the USA. This multi-award winning picture book provides readers with insight into Dr Martin Luther King Jr's life and the oppression and progress of African Americans before and during an era known as the modern US Civil Rights Movement (CRM). The biography outlines the period's equity issues, and serves as a springboard for this upper elementary lesson. While Dr King played an iconic role, there were many other individuals involved in the CRM, most of whom students do not know. The purpose of this paper is to offer varying perspectives related to lesser known CRM leaders, protesters, advocates, perpetrators and bystanders. Design/methodology/approach - Technology is incorporated through online research, videos and productions; thus, students actively engage in making connections to various individuals' points of view, those both supportive and oppositional. Students conduct research while responding to higher-order, critical-thinking questions regarding groups and forces of the CRM. Then, they expand knowledge through jigsaw research activities by collecting information, responding to inquiry questions and presenting relevant evidence-based information about CRM contributors, perpetrators and bystanders. Runway incursions are an important aviation safety concern; between 2002 and 2015 there were 16,785 runway incursions at United States airports ranging in size from small general aviation (GA) to large commercial airline hubs. When examining airports with the 50 highest incursion count over the past 5 years, the predominant categories were large hubs, which accounted for 21 airports and general aviation (GA) airports which accounted for 16 airports. In June 2015, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the Runway Incursion Mitigation (RIM) program to identify airport risk factors that might contribute to a runway incursion and develop strategies to help airport stakeholders mitigate those risks. Different size airports serve different aircraft fleets, serve different operating volumes, and have different resources available (both funds and technologies) for incursion mitigation. Therefore, it is valuable to determine the correlating factors that affect incursions at different size airports. This paper uses econometrics based modelling techniques to identify statistically significant factors in data provided by the (FAA) public web sites on runway incursions. The model identified statistically significant variables that correlate with incursions, based on severity, for airports categories defined by the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). The model results indicate that operational incidents (OI) are more likely at large hub airports. In contrast, at GA/non-hub airports, pilot deviations (PD) were significant for less severe incursions (severity C and D). Only one variable, “number of years since 2002”, was found to be significant for all the three airport categories; this variable was correlated with severity A incursions and indicated a statistically significant reduction in severity A incursions, despite an overall 80% increase in incursions between 2002 and 2015. The U.S. Civil Rights Movement (CRM) is a relevant K-6 topic to learn foundational concepts of social justice and participatory citizenship. Year after year, though, U.S. elementary school lessons typically focus on a Martin Luther King, Jr.-Rosa Parks centered narrative, adapted for character education. This qualitative inquiry invited 66 pre-service teachers to explore social justice education embedded at the core of existing K-6 historical topics. Examining pre-service teachers' knowledge, beliefs, and what and how they plan to teach their future students revealed dated educational philosophies. They held limited content knowledge and sociopolitical critical thinking needed to teach the CRM's civic significance and were conflicted by wanting to both empower students and withhold information. This study describes actions designed to model replicable, justice-oriented lessons and help K-6 pre-service teachers reflect on pedagogical choices and ideologies they adopt. It also calls attention to the challenges of K-6 teacher education and school reform when teachers lack content knowledge and political/cultural awareness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The incidence of premature infants with complex medical needs, dependent upon medical technology at discharge, is on the rise in the United States.Purpose: Preparing the family for the hospital-to-home transition can be challenging due to the complex medical and emotional needs of the vulnerable infant and the volume of subspecialty services and equipment required.Methods/search Strategy: Relevant articles from PubMed, Google Scholar, CINAHLFINDINGS/RESULTS:: There is an increasing incidence of technology dependent infants discharged from neonatal intensive care units in the United States. Transition from hospital to home requires lengthy preparation, multidisciplinary-open communication, and family centered care.Implications For Practice: Early assimilation of the parents into the ongoing care of their infant, the provision of comprehendible parental education by neonatal nurses and other members of the healthcare team, the provision of adequate rooming-in experiences prior to discharge, and the collaborative coordination of outpatient community services are crucial elements of the discharge process. Neonatal nurses possess population-specific education, training, commitment, and expertise that make them the ideal experts to implement and evaluate a discharge planning framework, in collaboration with the medical team and the family.Implications For Research: Methods to prevent readmission and ensure successful discharge from hospital to home is indicated. Pharmaceutical contamination of shallow groundwater is a substantial concern in effluent-dominated streams, due to high aqueous mobility, designed bioactivity, and effluent-driven hydraulic gradients. In October and December 2012, effluent contributed approximately 99% and 71%, respectively, to downstream flow in Fourmile Creek, Iowa, USA. Strong hydrologic connectivity was observed between surface-water and shallow-groundwater. Carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, and immunologically-related compounds were detected in groundwater at greater than 0.02 μg L −1 at distances up to 6 m from the stream bank. Direct aqueous-injection HPLC-MS/MS revealed 43% and 55% of 110 total pharmaceutical analytes in surface-water samples in October and December, respectively, with 16% and 6%, respectively, detected in groundwater approximately 20 m from the stream bank. The results demonstrate the importance of effluent discharge as a driver of local hydrologic conditions in an effluent-impacted stream and thus as a fundamental control on surface-water to groundwater transport of effluent-derived pharmaceutical contaminants. This qualitative study explored five African American single mothers who utilize racial socialization to influence academic achievement in their elementary aged sons. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to broaden this population's qualitative research base, and (b) to inform stakeholders of factors actuating African American males' academic success. Results indicated these mothers believe: (a) racial socialization is a viable tool for fortifying their son's social and academic well-being; (b) their upbringing influenced their parenting style; and (c) family, church members, and friends play an important role in supporting them and their sons. The consequences of a trend to marginalize social studies in the early grades are complex and widespread, as a new wave of novice teachers and K-6 students are receiving a message clearly implying that social studies education is unimportant. Convincing them of the value in teaching and learning social studies is progressively becoming more difficult for social studies methods instructors. The purpose of this study was to examine pre- service teachers' observations of the extent to which social studies is being marginalized, possible barriers involved, and the impact that this phenomenon has on pre-service teachers and K-6 students in the classroom. Through a mixed-method design, 88 pre- service teachers were asked to report their classroom observations. Over half observed social studies instruction. Of those who observed social studies instruction, about a third indicated that teachers taught 5-15 min per day. Pre-service teachers reported personal success in planning and teaching social studies lessons during their practicum experiences; likewise, K-6 students were motivated by pre-service teachers' student-centered activities in the lessons. Background: The macro-level economy may affect fetal health through maternal behavioral or physiologic responses.Methods: We used a multilevel design to examine associations between exposure to state-level unexpected economic contraction during each trimester of gestation and birth weight for gestational age percentile and small for gestational age (SGA), using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979. We examined differences in observed associations by maternal educational attainment, race/ethnicity, employment status, and poverty status.Results: Exposure in the first trimester was associated with a 3.7 percentile point decrease in birth weight for gestational age (95% confidence interval [CI] = -6.8 to -0.6). This association appeared stronger for women "keeping house" or with <12 years education. Exposure in the first trimester was also associated with increased odds of SGA (odds ratio = 1.5 [95% CI = 1.1 to 2.1]) and term SGA (odds ratio = 1.6 [95% CI = 1.2 to 2.3]).Conclusions: Unexpected economic contraction during early pregnancy may be associated with reduced fetal growth. The article focuses on the findings of the study concerning the learning style preferences of agricultural students enrolled in Soil Sciences course with the use of the Productivity Environmental Preference Survey (PEPS) in the U.S. The study examines the potential differences in the students' course grade average (CGA) in the given Soil Science course when the treatment group were taught according to their preferred learning style versus the control group. The result of the study indicated the importance of modifying the instructional approach to the students' learning style preference to obtain a higher CGA for the treatment group versus the control group.

This experimental study tested the effects of instrumental background music on subjects' opinions of the candidate in a political radio commercial. Democrats hearing a Democratic candidate commercial without music considered it more issue-oriented than those hearing it with music. No significant effects were found in Republicans. Controlling for party affiliation, results showeda significant correlation between subjects'perceiving the spot as issueoriented and their stated intention to vote for the candidate. Subjects hearing the spot with music were more likely to consider the spot "well done," but this did not translate into a statistically significant preference for the candidate. In response to recently enacted federal legislation known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), a teacher education institution entered into a collaborative arrangement, funded by the local school district, which greatly increased the amount of time elementary preservice teachers spent in their initial field experience. NCLB participants were assigned to local, low-performing, inner-city schools, while traditional elementary preservice teachers were assigned to a variety of sites. ANCOVA was used to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in the changes in the preservice teachers' stress (as measured by teacher stress subscales) between the NCLB and traditional groups. The results indicated there were no statistically significant difference in the changes in the instrument subscales of role overload, job satisfaction, and illness symptoms. Contrastingly, there was a statistically significant difference (p < .05) between the changes in the role preparedness of the NCLB and traditional participants with the traditional group having a higher mean. Qualitative data revealed that both NCLB and traditional group members overwhelmingly identified course load as the leading cause of stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Section 304(a) of the Copyright Act was originally enacted in 1909 and was later endorsed by the Copyright Act of 1976. According to the legislative history, Congress created this section to "permit authors, originally in a poor bargaining position, to renegotiate the term of the grant once the value of the work has been tested." The article focuses on the development of a structured program of elementary school art instruction for the classroom teachers in the U.S. The content of the program is based on the basic concepts stemming from the several subject fields related to visual arts education. The program aims to apply the results of recent research in learning, child development, perception, and creativity so as to make the content available to the child. The reports seem to suggest that the elementary years probably should not put emphasis on aesthetic-decision-making. The Southern Forest and Tree Health Diagnostics Facebook page, managed by Extension and forestry professionals in the southeastern United States, is designed to deliver forest and tree heath information to the public via a web-based, crowdsourced diagnostic service. We conducted an online survey to quantify the page's impact by identifying audience demographics, engagement levels, and perceptions of the page's value. Results indicated that stakeholders consider the Southern Forest and Tree Health Diagnostics page to be an effective diagnostics service and a valuable educational tool.
