The purpose of this research was to determine the relevance of the media in the prevention, education and contextual management of COVID-19. Methodology: descriptive non-experimental transectional research. An international survey validated by experts was applied, surveying 1082 people during a month. The countries with the highest participation were Peru, Colombia, Mexico, the United States and Russia. The data was processed using SPSS version 25. 64.7% of the respondents affirmed that the means were decisive in preventing the pandemic; 59.1% recognized the importance of the media for awareness and prevention of the pandemic, and 64% valued the importance of the media for the contextual management of the pandemic; demonstrating a significant relationship between the variables. Contributions: the need for strategic, prudent, ethical and socially responsible communication that benefits citizens in a pandemic situation is highlighted.

A new, interdisciplinary high school geoarchaeology curriculum unit, titled "Living with Volcanoes," was created and tested in two pilot lessons with 30 high school students total studying geography and classical civilization in northern England. Students were highly engaged during the curriculum unit and showed positive learning gains and favorable shifts in perceptions as measured immediately before and after its implementation. Geoarchaeology combines disciplinary knowledge from geoscience and archaeology to construct novel approaches to past human inhabitation and environmental interaction. The curriculum unit was designed to introduce this field to high school students, following guidelines from interdisciplinary studies, and it was modified iteratively, based on interviews with four high school teachers of relevant classes. It combines short lectures and group work in a 90 min, interactive format to address a variety of questions surrounding the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and its impact on the town of Pompeii and other nearby areas. Pilot survey and observational data, combined with feedback from students and teachers, were used to modify the curriculum unit. Restructured case study questions now provide better scaffolding for students, and teachers are provided with an answer key to better support facilitation. "Living with Volcanoes" has the potential to be utilized in cross-disciplinary recruitment for both geoscience and archaeology, at the high school and introductory postsecondary level. This broader, interdisciplinary approach to curriculum development may be applied to other fields of geoscience that transcend common disciplinary boundaries.

Induction of labor is a widely used practice. From 2016 to 2019, >1 in 3 women giving birth in the United States did so after undergoing labor induction. The obvious goal of labor induction is vaginal birth with minimal maternal or neonatal morbidity. To achieve this goal, criteria for failed labor induction are needed. Herein, we provide an evidence-based approach to safely prevent unnecessary cesarean deliveries for failed induction. Although there are no randomized trials comparing failed labor induction criteria, the observational data have been consistent: if the status of the mother and the fetus permits, at least 12 to 18 hours of oxytocin should be administered after membrane rupture before deeming an induction of labor to have failed because of nonprogression to the active phase of labor. This study assesses the relationships across racial and ethnic self-identifications, gender, and college attainment within the Latino group. With the use of data from the basic Current Population Survey (2010-2012), the results indicate that college attainment varies within the Latino sample by racial and ethnic self-identifications even after controlling for cultural, socioeconomic, and demographic factors. Specifically, the results of the logistic analysis indicate that Latinos who self-identify as Asian Hawaiian have higher odds of having a college degree than those who self-identify as White. Interestingly, Latinos who self-classify as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Central American are less likely than Cubans to attain a college degree even after controlling for an array of cultural, socioeconomic, and demographic factors. Contrary to our hypothesis, the effect of gender is not found to be significant. Ultimately, the results provide evidence to the limitations of aggregating the Latino population to understand their college attainment.

People witness today in the US what might be considered a "generous hijacking" of educational policy. Policy debates on charters, vouchers, for profit schools, testing and evaluation companies, and "education reform" reveal a triple privatization of educational policy. Varied enactments of educational privatization dot the globe, linked in a commitment to concentrate policy-making upward, toward the stratification, gentrification, and privatization of the public sector. While many have written critically on this neo-liberal transformation of public education policy, in this brief essay the authors try to "recover a language of and for education articulated in terms of ethics, moral obligations and values" (Ball 2004, 24-5) by framing public science as a strategic intervention for educational justice and policy development. We use existential theory as a framework to explore the levels of and relationship between job and couple burnout reported by dual-earner couples in the "sandwich generation" (i.e., couples caring both for children and aging parents) in a sample of such couples in Israel and the United States. This comparison enables an examination of the influence of culture (which is rarely addressed in burnout research) and gender (a topic fraught with conflicting results) on both job and couple burnout in this growing yet understudied group of workers who are reaching middle age and starting to face existential issues as part of their own life cycle. Results revealed significant differences in burnout type (job burnout higher than couple burnout); gender (wives more burned out than husbands); and country (Americans more burned out than Israelis). Job related stressors and rewards as well as parent care stressors predicted job burnout, and marital stressors and rewards predicted couple burnout. Purpose: The paper addresses the influence of culture and gender on the choice of a management career among men and women MBA students in Israel, the USA, the UK, Turkey, Cyprus, Hungary and India. The culture by gender comparison enabled an examination of five theories: two that focused on culture (Hofstede's and an application of Schneider's ASA model) and three that focused on gender (evolutionary theory, social role theory and social construction theory). The five theories have contradictory predictions about the relative influence of culture and gender. Design/methodology/approach: Seven hundred and forty-seven MBA students (390 male and 357 female and approximately 100 in each country) responded to a self-report measure that was assembled especially for the purpose of the study. Findings: The findings showed large cross-cultural differences and small gender differences in the influences and aspirations associated with a career choice in management. Research limitations/implications: The findings support Hofstede's research and social construction theory, which predicted the cross-cultural differences. They provide some support for social role theory, which predicted both gender and cross-cultural differences, and very limited support for evolutionary theory, which predicted large and universal gender differences, and for the application of Schneider's ASA model, which predicted no cross-cultural differences. Originality/value: The findings are important in light of the small percentage of women in top management positions and the view of an MBA as means for breaking through the glass ceiling into top management. The findings can be translated to recommendations for encouraging women's entry into management. (Contains 5 tables.)

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to introduce the papers in this special issue and some issues surrounding choosing management as a career. A jointly developed questionnaire is also presented. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is descriptive in nature. Findings: It is crucial for researchers and practitioners to expand their perspectives to include other cultures and other theoretical perspectives beyond those offered by traditional vocational choice theories. Originality/value: Understanding the antecedents, correlates and consequences of people's vocational choice to become managers will not only help researchers and practitioners and benefit managers, but will improve the understanding of career choice in general. Mexican immigrants working at a wholesale nursery were involved in developing user instructions for a computer-based instruction system. Sixty-one Latinos with 0 to 16 years of education completed user instructions delivered on the computer, and all but 3 completed training content about the nursery. Based on objective criteria, program use was rated as "somewhat easy" to "easy" for most participants with more than 3 years of education, whereas 50% of those with 0 to 2 years of education completed content with "difficulty" or "struggled." Participants who completed the computer-based posttest (n =22) had a mean performance of 96%, which was significantly better than the performance of 87% (n = 18) on an oral pretest (p = .003, d = 1.02). Thus, computer-based instruction can effectively train immigrant Latinos who have very limited formal education.

As gestational surrogacy (a process by which intended parents contract with a woman to carry a fetus that the intended parents will raise) increases across the United States, it is imperative that obstetrician/gynecologists understand the unique nuances of caring for patients who are gestational surrogates. Gestational surrogacy offers a route to parenthood for individuals and families who may otherwise have limited options. Understanding surrogacy requires multiple ethical considerations about the potential medical and psychosocial effects on gestational surrogates as well as the families built through surrogacy. There is a dearth of research on the subject, particularly in the United States and other countries that practice compensated surrogacy. Here we seek to review the process of gestational surrogacy in the United States, including the legal landscape, current trends in gestational surrogacy use, and what is known about the medical and social effects of this process on all participants. We also aim to highlight the limitations of available data and to identify topics for future research to provide optimal evidence-based and just care for these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Burnout and coping were investigated among 503 human service professionals in the United States and Israel. Americans reported feeling more burned out than Israelis; women more than men. Women used indirect and inactive coping strategies more than men and Americans more than Israelis, suggesting active-direct strategies are better defenses against stress. (KH)

Previous predictive models using logistic regression for stillbirth do not leverage the advanced and nuanced techniques involved in sophisticated machine learning methods, such as modeling nonlinear relationships between outcomes. This study aimed to create and refine machine learning models for predicting stillbirth using data available before viability (22–24 weeks) and throughout pregnancy, as well as demographic, medical, and prenatal visit data, including ultrasound and fetal genetics. This is a secondary analysis of the Stillbirth Collaborative Research Network, which included data from pregnancies resulting in stillborn and live-born infants delivered at 59 hospitals in 5 diverse regions across the United States from 2006 to 2009. The primary aim was the creation of a model for predicting stillbirth using data available before viability. Secondary aims included refining models with variables available throughout pregnancy and determining variable importance. Among 3000 live births and 982 stillbirths, 101 variables of interest were identified. Of the models incorporating data available before viability, the random forests model had 85.1% accuracy (area under the curve) and high sensitivity (88.6%), specificity (85.3%), positive predictive value (85.3%), and negative predictive value (84.8%). A random forests model using data collected throughout pregnancy resulted in accuracy of 85.0%; this model had 92.2% sensitivity, 77.9% specificity, 84.7% positive predictive value, and 88.3% negative predictive value. Important variables in the previability model included previous stillbirth, minority race, gestational age at the earliest prenatal visit and ultrasound, and second-trimester serum screening. Applying advanced machine learning techniques to a comprehensive database of stillbirths and live births with unique and clinically relevant variables resulted in an algorithm that could accurately identify 85% of pregnancies that would result in stillbirth, before they reached viability. Once validated in representative databases reflective of the US birthing population and then prospectively, these models may provide effective risk stratification and clinical decision-making support to better identify and monitor those at risk of stillbirth. Summary: Prostatic adenocarcinoma is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in American men. Tumor Gleason grade and stage provide extremely valuable prognostic information and play an important role in therapeutic decision making and patient counseling. A biopsy or radical prostatectomy specimen revealing carcinoma extending into extraprostatic tissue permits a T3 classification. This is most easily recognized, particularly in a needle biopsy, when tumor is seen to invade the adipose tissue. The existence of intraprostatic adipose tissue is somewhat controversial. To investigate this, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded whole-mount radical prostatectomy specimens from 427 patients with adenocarcinoma were evaluated for intraprostatic adipose tissue. It was defined as any collection of adipocytes amid or internal to the most peripheral glands. The amount, anatomic location, and relationship to normal structures were also recorded. Intraprostatic adipose tissue was identified in 17 (3.98%) of cases. It consisted of small microscopic foci composed of 5 to 20 adipocytes. In 13 cases, the fat was intimately associated with benign glands. In another 2 cases, it was associated with small nerves, and in 2 cases was random with no specific localization. Intraprostatic adipose tissue was located in the peripheral zone in 15 cases and in the central zone in 2. Intraprostatic adipose tissue, although uncommon, does exist. Therefore, caution must be exercised in diagnosing extraprostatic extension based only upon identification of fat invasion, especially in a needle biopsy. The small size of foci of adipose tissue and its admixture with benign glands are useful morphologic clues in distinguishing it from extraprostatic fat. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article examines the value-attribution patterns found in encounter groups in the U.S. The study found that when members of encounter groups talk about themselves, they engage in neutralizing negative valuations. It also found that group leaders were largely negative in their description of group members.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) is an epidemic in the United States and is associated with early onset of atherosclerosis, increased thrombotic events, and increased complications after cardiovascular intervention. MetSyn is found in ∼50% of patients with peripheral vascular disease. However, its impact on peripheral interventions is unknown. The aim of this study is to determine the outcomes of superficial femoral artery (SFA) interventions in patients with and without MetSyn. Methods: A database of patients undergoing endovascular treatment of SFA disease between 1999 and 2009 was retrospectively queried. MetSyn was defined as the presence of ≥3 of the following criteria: blood pressure ≥130 mm Hg/≥85 mm Hg; triglycerides ≥150 mg/dL; high-density lipoprotein ≤50 mg/dL for women and ≤40 mg/dL for men; fasting blood glucose ≥110 mg/dL; or body mass index ≥30 kg/m2. Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were performed to assess time-dependent outcomes. Factor analyses were performed using a Cox proportional hazard model for time-dependent variables. Results: A total of 1018 limbs in 738 patients (64% male, average age 67 years) underwent endovascular treatment for symptomatic SFA disease with 45% of patients meeting the criteria for MetSyn. MetSyn patients were more likely to be female (P = .001), to present with critical ischemia (rest pain/tissue loss: 55% MetSyn vs 45% non-MetSyn; P = .001), have poorer ambulatory status (P = .001), and have more advanced SFA lesions (TransAtlantic Inter-Society Consensus II C/D: 51% vs 11%; P = .001) and worse tibial runoff (P = .001). MetSyn patients required more complex interventions (P = .0001). There was no difference in mortality and major adverse cardiac events, but systemic complications (4% vs 1%; P = .001) and major adverse limb events (12% vs 7%; P = .0009) were significantly higher in the MetSyn group. Immediate postprocedural hemodynamic improvement, resolved or improved symptoms, and restoration of impaired ambulation were equivalent in both groups. Early failure (<6 months) was more common in those with MetSyn. At 5 years, primary, assisted primary, and secondary patencies were not affected by the presence of MetSyn. The presence of MetSyn was associated with a decrease in clinical efficacy, decreased freedom from recurrent symptoms, and decreased freedom from major amputation at 5 years. Conclusions: MetSyn is present in nearly half of the patients presenting with SFA disease. These patients present with more advanced disease and have poorer symptomatic and functional outcomes compared with those patients without MetSyn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
