The article offers information on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) enacted in the U.S. in 1974. The role of FERPA is to ensure that private student records are not disclosed to anyone without the consent of the parent until the student reaches 18 years of age. Problems that may arise when users are in control of centralized databases instead of information technology (IT) professionals are cited. The author suggests ideas to follow to ensure compliance of FERPA.
