Purpose – This paper aims to update information on ReadCube Access and briefly reviews its history. The study also reports on the use of ReadCube Access by five US academic libraries. Design/methodology/approach – A series of questions was distributed to selected academic libraries using ReadCube Access. Survey recipients were asked to describe the library and the institution served, how long ReadCube Access has been in use, how many journals from Nature Publishing Group (NPG) were licensed and how many journals were being provided using ReadCube Access. Participating libraries were also asked to provide information about the purchase options offered to end-users, were asked to report on ReadCube Access usage and were requested to compare that usage to interlibrary loan (ILL) requests for NPG journals. Finally, the libraries were asked to share any comments about ReadCube Access they wished, including end user feedback and comments from library staff. Findings – ReadCube Access is shown to be cost-effective and more heavily used than interlibrary loan. End-users are enthused by the instantaneous delivery of articles, and most libraries are generally pleased with the sustainability of this unmediated service. Some end-users are confused and annoyed by the differences in using ReadCube Access compared with the familiar use of subscriptions. A failing of ReadCube Access is that it only offers content from one publisher. In late nineteenth-century USA, technological developments in paper production—a shift from a reliance on scarce cotton rag to plentiful wood—drastically reduced the price of newsprint. That decline helped overturn the reigning economics of the daily newspaper and resulted in the rise of new cheap papers with vastly expanded circulation. This novel mass press encompassed almost all Americans in the public sphere as represented by its pages. Focusing on newspapers in Detroit, this study examines the manifold consequences this shift had for the press's economics, its news agenda, and the implicit identity of the audience it addressed. The rise of a mass press in the late nineteenth century, however, was not specific to Detroit or the USA. As comparative historians have highlighted, the emergence of a mass press in Europe and elsewhere was a turning point that deeply marked the historical evolution of press systems around the globe. Abstract: New technologies in food processing can provide advantages to consumers and producers but often the technologies are applied in different, country-specific regulatory climates. Modified atmosphere packaging extends the shelf life of fresh meat and, with the inclusion of carbon monoxide, stabilizes colour. These packaging technologies can be used in the US and Europe, although a modified atmosphere package that includes carbon monoxide is allowed only in the US. This study applies choice experiments to analyse preferences of US and German consumers towards the meat attributes enhanced by the packaging. Results show that longer shelf life is preferred in the US as long as the technology is understandable. Consumers in both countries have clear preferences for cherry red meat colour. However, providing information on the use of carbon monoxide in the packaging decreases US consumers’ willingness to pay and increases some German consumers’ willingness to pay. The article discusses the study on how companies in the U.S. are displaced by technological progress. It states that disruption happens when market share of a business whose uses new technology surpasses the market share of the largest share of the business who uses product with the highest-share technology. It cites that the current business regularly introduces disruptive technologies than the new. It also mentions that the new technology is more advanced than the established technology.

With rights fees increasing and leverage costs far exceeding initial sponsorship investments, companies need to find alternative ways to reach their target market and communicate effectively and efficiently. Corporate sponsors often implement and utilise new media and technology in order to engage consumers, develop brand awareness, and provide unique content opportunities. The purpose of this article is twofold. First, to provide a review of exchange theory as it relates to activational leverage of corporate sponsorship. Second, the article will highlight three categories of new media and technology corporate sponsors can utilise when conducting activational leverage of their brands: 1) in-venue devices and smartphone applications; 2) social media; 3) stadium technology. The article will focus on how in-venue devices and smartphone applications, social media, and stadium technology can be used from an exchange perspective to actively leverage corporate sponsorships and enhance relationship marketing in sport. The purposes of this study are: a) to examine consumers' perceptions about new technology (electronic scoring system) adapted in the US Open Taekwondo events; b) to identify factors that significantly influence their attitude and purchase decision. Davis' (1989) and Davis et al.'s (1992) technology acceptance conception were applied. Multiple regression analyses and descriptive statistics were conducted using data from a survey of a convenience sample of spectators, athletes, and coaches participating in the 2010 US Open Taekwondo Championship. Person-to-person interviews were conducted to expand and enrich the quantitative findings. The results suggested that usefulness and enjoyability were found to be important predictors in developing positive attitude and purchase intention among target samples. Abstract: A survey of 312 public relations executives and educators examined how well practitioners and instructors perceive public relations students to be prepared for the practice, the content and value of public relations curricula and, the future of public relations education in the United States. Results are largely consistent with those from a slightly smaller 1998 survey, suggesting that the views of both groups are consistent over time and providing the first two data points in what it is hoped will develop into a longitudinal line of research addressing public relations education. Judgments regarding the desired characteristics among job applicants and essential curriculum content were extremely similar between the practitioner and educator groups with both wanting more emphasis on research, ethics and strategic planning as the field moves from a low-paid technical emphasis toward a much better paid strategic planning and research emphasis. Abstract: A 2007 national public opinion survey of 1404 Americans revealed variations in sentiments concerning the desirability of several mobile healthcare technologies based on RFID. The survey appears to be the first reasonably national public opinion survey of US adults concerning their attitudes towards mobile healthcare technology. The survey revealed high levels of interest in emergency intervention services, but much less so in health information and monitoring services. Interest in RFID personal medical technology was positively associated with high levels of trust in others and social support. At the same time, a small minority were negatively disposed towards such applications. In those cases, the negative sentiment appears heightened when the mobile healthcare application is offered in a modality attached to the body as opposed to a somewhat more physically remote option, i.e., attached to one''s cell phone. Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related mortality in the USA. Surgical resection is the standard treatment for resectable disease; however, a significant percentage of patients with otherwise resectable lung cancer may have other comorbidities, precluding surgical resection. In patients with Stage I non-small-cell lung cancer, conventional external-beam radiotherapy is typically offered as treatment in medically inoperable, high-risk patients with reported 5-year survival rates of 10-30%. An emerging technology in the treatment of lung tumors is radiofrequency ablation, which is a thermal ablative technique and may be applicable in high-risk patients with lung cancer. In this article we will review the principles of radiofrequency ablation, the common devices in use, the experimental background, the results of 'ablate and resect' studies and the clinical experience with radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of lung neoplasm. Abstract: There is rapid expansion of newborn screening throughout the United States. A recent report from the American College of Medical Genetics has recommended a mechanism by which decisions are made about adding tests to the screening panel, and a core panel of 29 conditions has been recommended. Implementing such a program is a major undertaking in every state and involves not only the laboratory but also a number of diagnostic and follow-up services. It is essential to have laboratory programs in place to minimize false positive screening tests and at the same time communicate in the most effective manner possible about the nature of false positives. This article is intended for any physician, administrator, or cardiovascular catheterization laboratory (CCL) staff member who desires a fundamental understanding of finances and economics of CCLs in the United States. The authors' goal is to illuminate general economic principles of CCL operations and provide details that can be used immediately by CCL leaders. Any article on economics in medicine should start by acknowledging the primacy of the principles of medical ethics. While physicians have been trained to act in the best interests of their patients and avoid actions that would harm patients it is vitally important that all professionals in the CCL focus on patients' needs. Caregivers both at the bedside and in the office must consider how their actions will affect not only the patient they are treating at the time, but others as well. If the best interests of a patient were to conflict with any recommendation in this article, the former should prevail. KEY POINTS: To be successful and financially viable under current payment systems, CCL physicians, and managers must optimize the outcomes and efficiency of care by aligning CCL leadership, strategy, organization, processes, personnel, and culture. Optimizing a CCL's operating margin (profitability) requires maximizing revenues and minimizing expenses. CCL managers often focus on expense reduction; they should also pay attention to revenue generation. Expense reduction depends on efficiency (on-time starts, short turn-over time, smooth day-to-day schedules), identifying cost-effective materials, and negotiating their price downward. Revenue optimization requires accurate documentation and coding of procedures, comorbidities, and complications. In fee-for-service and bundled payment reimbursement systems, higher volumes of procedures yield higher revenues. New procedures that improve patient care but are expensive can usually be justified by negotiating with vendors for lower prices and including the "halo effect" of collateral services that accompany the new procedure. Fiscal considerations should never eclipse quality concerns. High quality CCL care that prevents complications, increases efficiency, reduces waste, and eliminates unnecessary procedures represents a win for patients, physicians, and CCL administrators., (© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)
