The article focuses on a study which found that mammary tumor virus were present in 40% of the sporadic breast cancers of women in the U.S. through the retroviral sequences with 85% to 95% homology. Through the investigation of the presence of human mammary tumor virus (HMTV) in a variety of breast conditions and geographic locations, American women with inflammatory breast cancer (IBS) show a high rate of incidence of viral sequences. The article concludes that HMTV is associated with malignant phenotype.
