Community‐based participatory research (CBPR) approaches to promoting justice focus on working from the ground up and giving a voice to marginalized communities regarding their concerns, potential solutions, and how to address social justice issues that matter to them. The pursuit of justice is often related to efforts to attain personal as well as collective well‐being. In this paper, we illustrate three exemplars of community psychologists' efforts to promote justice. Within each case study, we discuss the social and community context and examine how the researchers built partnerships and solidarity, developed ways of doing, and approached challenges and solutions. First, we present an example to promote economic justice through an entrepreneurship initiative developed in collaboration with young Black youth with disabilities in the United States. The second case illustrates an effort to promote reproductive justice in collaboration with Roma women and girls in Spain. The third exemplar depicts the use of life stories as a method to raise the voices of displaced, marginalized indigenous women in Peru. Based on these three case studies, we present a synthesis model of social justice. We also discuss implications for future studies emphasizing the importance of engaging community participants in research meaningful ways, developing sustainable partnerships, and decolonizing research. Considering reservoirs as linear fragments in a basin's river network could improve understanding, predictability, and management efficiency. We looked for general cascading spatial patterns across five categories of reservoir attributes: land cover, morphology and hydrology, fish habitat, fish assemblages, and fisheries. Attributes were pulled from various databases for large reservoirs (>100 ha) located in the United States. 16 widely distributed river basins, each including a minimum of 15 large reservoirs, were selected for analysis. Using analysis of covariance with basin as the class variable, we tested each attribute as a linear function of catchment area, which is an index of reservoir position in the basin. The majority of reservoir attributes displayed log‐linear patterns as catchment area increased, indicating that reservoirs act as members of a larger network just as river reaches do. Several patterns were detected including attributes with no apparent lengthwise arrangement along the basin; cascading spatial patterns in which attributes increase or decrease from upstream to downstream within a basin; and attributes that increase with catchment area in some basins, decrease in others, or may simply remain constant throughout the basin. We conclude that each pattern may have different implications for management, and that the effectiveness with which most management activities influence reservoirs is likely to increase or decrease along river basins. Rivers become wider, deeper, and carry more nutrients and sediment as they progress downstream. The numbers and types of fish species also change as streams increase in size. We investigated patterns in hydrology, water quality, fish ecology, and fisheries in reservoirs installed in series along 16 river basins in the continental United States. We found that most of the characteristics we examined do display lengthwise patterns as catchment area increases, which shows that reservoirs act as members of a larger network just as different reaches of a river do. The patterns we report may lead to more efficient management of hydrology, fish habitat, and fisheries in reservoirs as knowledge of these patterns may reduce the need for monitoring each reservoir in the river series. Goals are important for the effective execution of public trust responsibilities by state inland fisheries bureaus, but formulating meaningful goals is not simple. Often bureaus look to their past and to their sister bureaus in neighboring states when crafting goals for their own freshwater resources. Herein, we review the goal themes of fisheries bureaus using publicly available documents and guided by previous literature. We test whether goals exhibit geographic patterns, presuming that differences and similarities in climate, natural resources, and people determine, to various degrees, the goal themes across the United States. We identified nine distinct goal themes, but found that they do not form clear geographic patterns, which contrasts with a similar analysis conducted in the 1970s. Since the 1970s, fisheries bureau goals have expanded and regionalism in goals has vanished. We suggest that changes in perspectives and communication technology, as well as provisions within nationwide funding mechanisms, have led to goals becoming more homogenous across the USA and more diverse within each bureau. Fish habitats in many aging US reservoirs have become degraded and require broad-scale assessment to rate their status and facilitate rehabilitation efforts. To help prioritize habitat projects in reservoirs, we assembled a rating system for large reservoirs in the contiguous United States. Using responses to an online questionnaire about fish habitat impairment in 1299 large US reservoirs, we applied multivariate analyses to identify combinations of habitat impairment descriptors that quantified broad impairment types (i.e., a construct). Resulting constructs reflected point source pollution, nonpoint source pollution, excessive nutrients, algae blooms, siltation, limited nutrients, mudflats and shallowness, limited connectivity to adjacent habitats, limited littoral structure, nuisance species, anomalous water regimes, and large water level fluctuations. Scores were summed across constructs to create a composite number that rated overall reservoir habitat impairment. Construct and composite scores differed among geographic ecoregions of the United States. This rating system could provide a starting point for prioritizing reservoirs for habitat rehabilitation and enhancement projects. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

ABSTRACT The tailwater is the reach of a stream immediately below an impoundment that is hydrologically, physicochemically and biologically altered by the presence and operation of a dam. The overall goal of this study was to gain a nationwide awareness of the issues afflicting tailwater reaches in the United States. Specific objectives included the following: (i) estimate the percentage of reservoirs that support tailwater reaches with environmental conditions suitable for fish assemblages throughout the year, (ii) identify and quantify major sources of environmental stress in those tailwaters that do support fish assemblages and (iii) identify environmental features of tailwater reaches that determine prevalence of key fish taxa. Data were collected through an online survey of fishery managers. Relative to objective 1, 42% of the 1306 reservoirs included in this study had tailwater reaches with sufficient flow to support a fish assemblage throughout the year. The surface area of the reservoir and catchment most strongly delineated reservoirs maintaining tailwater reaches with or without sufficient flow to support a fish assemblage throughout the year. Relative to objective 2, major sources of environmental stress generally reflected flow variables, followed by water quality variables. Relative to objective 3, zoogeography was the primary factor discriminating fish taxa in tailwaters, followed by a wide range of flow and water quality variables. Results for objectives 1-3 varied greatly among nine geographic regions distributed throughout the continental United States. Our results provide a large-scale view of the effects of reservoirs on tailwater reaches and may help guide research and management needs. Published 2013. In some parts of the USA, anglers targeting crappies Pomoxis spp. are transitioning from mostly stationary angling with a single pole around submerged structures to using multiple poles while drifting with the wind or under power. This shift in fishing methods could result in a change in catch efficiency, possibly increasing exploitation rates to levels that would be of concern to managers. We studied the catch statistics of anglers fishing while trolling with multiple poles (trollers) and those fishing with single poles (polers) in Mississippi reservoirs. Specifically, we tested whether (1) various catch statistics differed between trollers and polers, (2) catch rates of trollers were related to the number of poles fished, and (3) trollers could raise exploitation rates to potentially unsustainable levels. Results showed that participation in the crappie fisheries was about equally split between polers and trollers. In spring, 90% of crappie anglers were polers; in summer, 85% of crappie anglers were trollers. The size of harvested crappies was similar for the two angler groups, but the catch per hour was almost three times higher for trollers than for polers. Catch rates by trollers were directly correlated to the number of poles fished, although the relationship flattened as the number of poles increased. The average harvest rate for one troller fishing with three poles was similar to the harvest rate obtained by one poler. Simulations predicted that at the existing mix of about 50% polers and 50% trollers and with no restrictions on the number of poles used by trollers, exploitation of crappies is about 1.3 times higher than that in a polers-only fishery; under a scenario in which 100% of crappie anglers were trollers, exploitation was forecasted to increase to about 1.7 times the polers-only rate. The efficiency of trolling for crappies should be of concern to fishery managers because crappie fisheries are mostly consumptive and may increase exploitation rates to unsustainable levels. Fish habitat impairment resulting from natural and anthropogenic watershed and in-lake processes has in many cases reduced the ability of reservoirs to sustain native fish assemblages and fisheries quality. Rehabilitation of impaired reservoirs is hindered by the lack of a method suitable for scoring impairment status. To address this limitation, an index of reservoir habitat impairment (IRHI) was developed by merging 14 metrics descriptive of common impairment sources, with each metric scored from 0 (no impairment) to 5 (high impairment) by fisheries scientists with local knowledge. With a plausible range of 5 to 25, distribution of the IRHI scores ranged from 5 to 23 over 482 randomly selected reservoirs dispersed throughout the USA. The IRHI reflected five impairment factors including siltation, structural habitat, eutrophication, water regime, and aquatic plants. The factors were weakly related to key reservoir characteristics including reservoir area, depth, age, and usetype, suggesting that common reservoir descriptors are poor predictors of fish habitat impairment. The IRHI is rapid and inexpensive to calculate, provides an easily understood measure of the overall habitat impairment, allows comparison of reservoirs and therefore prioritization of restoration activities, and may be used to track restoration progress. Ecology of Freshwater Fish 2010: 19: 578-585. © 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S We evaluated the influences of habitat connectivity and local environmental factors on the distribution and abundance patterns of fish functional groups in 17 floodplain lakes in the Yazoo River Basin, USA. The results of univariate and multivariate analyses showed that species-environmental relationships varied with the functional groups. Species richness and assemblage structure of periodic strategists showed strong and positive correlations with habitat connectivity. Densities of most equilibrium and opportunistic strategists decreased with habitat connectivity. Densities of certain equilibrium and opportunistic strategists increased with turbidity. Forested wetlands around the lakes were positively related to the densities of periodic and equilibrium strategists. These results suggest that decreases in habitat connectivity, forested wetland buffers and water quality resulting from environmental manipulations may cause local extinction of certain fish taxa and accelerate the dominance of tolerant fishes in floodplain lakes. As the median age of the thousands of large reservoirs (> 200 ha) in the United States tops 50, many are showing various signs offish habitat degradation. Our goal was to identify major factors degrading fish habitat in reservoirs across the country, and to explore regional degradation patterns. An online survey including 14 metrics was scored on a 0 (no degradation) to 5 (high degradation) point scale by 221 fisheries scientists (92% response rate) to describe degradation in 482 reservoirs randomly distributed throughout the continental United States. The highest scored sources of degradation were lack of aquatic macrophytes (41% of the reservoirs scored as 4-5), lack or loss of woody debris (35% scored 4-5), mistimed water level fluctuations (34% scored 4-5), and sedimentation (31% scored 4-5). Factor analysis identified five primary degradation factors that accounted for most of the variability in the 14 degradation metrics. The factors reflected siltation, structural habitat, eutrophication, water regime, and aquatic plants. Three degradation factors were driven principally by in-reservoir processes, whereas the other two were driven by inputs from the watershed. A comparison across U.S. regions indicated significant geographical differences in degradation relative to the factors emphasized by each region. Reservoirs sometimes have been dismissed as unnatural and disruptive, but they area product of public policy, a critical feature of landscapes, and they cannot be overlooked if managers are to effectively conserve river systems. Protection and restoration of reservoir habitats may be enhanced with a broader perspective that includes watershed management, in addition to in reservoir activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We surveyed the habitat and fish assemblages of four impounded and three unimpounded neighboring headwater streams, separated longitudinally into multiple upstream and downstream reaches. Instream habitat characteristics were similar between reaches of unimpounded streams and reaches above impoundments, and differed significantly from reaches below impoundments that included deeper water and more stable flows. Species richness was similar above and below impoundments, and between impounded and unimpounded streams, but fish assemblage composition and structure differed. Stream reaches above impoundments supported higher percentages of centrarchids compared to upper reaches of unimpounded streams, which had more obligate stream cyprinids. Reaches below impoundments supported mainly centrarchid species whereas lower reaches of unimpounded streams supported a balanced mix of cyprinids and centrarchids. Percina rnaculata (Blackside Darter) occurred throughout the study area except in upper reaches of impounded streams, illustrating how stream fragmentation can lesd to localized extirpations. Changes to the fish assemblages in reaches above impoundments were due to the loss of downstream connectivity, and changes to the fish assemblages below impoundments were due to alterations of instream habitat caused by the impoundments. Small impoundments can have important effects on fish faunas of small geographical areas, but also potentially large cumulative effects if distribution of impoundments is not administered strategically at the scale of the river basin. We caution that continual population increase, recent droughts, and projected changes in climate patterns are prompting a renewed interest in impoundment construction, and urge close regulatory oversight over such projects. The yellow bass (Morone mississippiensis) is native to the Mississippi River drainage and some adjacent Gulf of Mexico tributaries where it inhabits backwaters, oxbows, and reservoirs. We described the dietecology of yellow bass in an oxbow of the lower Mississippi River, assessed difference in diets between life stages, and measured diet overlap between yellow bass and coexisting species. Indices of diet breadth differed among age groups, with the diet of age-1 yellow bass being more specialized than that of larger fish. Although the yellow bass consumed a wide array of food items, it tended to rely on certain foods during different life stages. Age-1 yellow bass fed on chironomids, amphipods, and fish eggs, which accounted for 84% of the diet byweight. Age-2+ yellow bass consumed fish, fish eggs, amphipods, and benthic insects, which was over 70% of the diet by weight. Diet overlap was not significant (P > 0.20) between age-1 and age-2 yellow bass, or between age-1 yellow bass and age-0 largemouth bass (Micropterussalmoides), inland silverside (Menidia beryllina), or juvenile bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), suggesting that exploitative competition did not occur. Nevertheless, interactions between yellow bass and coexisting species may take the form of intraspecific predation given thepropensity of the yellow bass to eat fish eggs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recreational catfish harvest was classified in 349 reservoirs larger than 200 ha distributed over 40 states of the contiguous USA. Harvesting occurred in 282 reservoirs, averaged 2.8 kg ha-1 year-1 and represented 15.6% of the total fish yield. The genus Ictalurus contributed most to catfish fisheries (mean = 2.0 kg ha-1), followed by Ameiurus (1.1 kg ha-1) and Pylodictis (0.4 kg ha-1). Five distinct clusters of reservoirs were identified, differing relative to geographical distribution, catfish harvests, angler favouritism towards catfish and physicochemical characteristics. Reservoir clusters across the northern USA had low harvests and essentially featured reservoirs in the upper periphery of the native range of catfish. Harvesting in reservoirs in the south-west of the country, where catfish have been introduced, was higher than in the north, yet yield remained low. Within their native range, three overlapping clusters included one with medium and another with high harvests, both types dominated by Ictalurus, and a cluster with very high harvest dominated by Ameiurus. Variability in harvests was attributed to zoogeography, reservoir physicochemical characteristics and fishing effort. Management of catfish fisheries of the three less-productive clusters may focus on enhancement through habitat manipulation and stocking; the two more productive clusters offer the greatest flexibility for management through regulation of harvest.
