Demographics may influence the results and implications of mass communication research. Yet, there is a dearth of studies exploring the extent to which research in the field reports participants' demographics and the composition of its study samples. This content analysis takes an identity theory and ecological systems theory approach to examine participants' demographic characteristics in all mass communication studies conducted in the U.S. and published in six peer-reviewed journals from 2000 to 2014 (N = 1,278). According to our census, three-fourths of the studies reported gender, two-thirds reported age, two-fifths reported race/ethnicity and one-third reported education. While the reporting of demographics improved during the 15-year period, participants continued to be mostly educated, young, White women. In light of these findings, our theoretical framework contends that many of these studies may paint an incomplete picture of the role media play in the lives of the U.S. users and audiences. Furthermore, reporting of participants' demographics as well as sample composition differed by research methods and subdisciplines, thus revealing a lack of standard protocols across the discipline. Findings from this study encourage researchers to systematically record, report and analyze participant demographics, as well as to take into account participants' heterogeneity within these demographic groups. • Approximately 40% of cases of BC in the United States are attributable to smoking. • The population attributable fraction is highest in AI/ANs for both males and females, and the lowest in Hispanics for females and Asians and Pacific Islanders for males. • Smoking contributes to almost half of racial/ethnic disparities in BC incidence in the United States. Smoking is the most important modifiable risk factor for bladder cancer (BC), with the odds of developing BC among current and former smokers 3 times higher than never-smokers. We hypothesized that the observed disparities in BC incidence may be partially attributable to differences in smoking prevalence. We examined the attributable risk of BC related to smoking according to race/ethnicity and sex. We used data from SEER and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to estimate BC cases that would have been prevented if current and former smokers had never smoked to calculate the Population Attributable Fractions, stratified by sex and race/ethnicity. SDs of BC incidences across racial/ethnic groups before and after smoking elimination were calculated to estimate disparities. A total of 25,747 cases of BC were analyzed from 21 registries in 2018. By removing smoking, 10,176 cases (40%) would have been eliminated. Smoking was associated with a higher proportion of BC cases among males (42%) than females (36%). Across racial/ethnic groups, smoking contributed to the highest proportion of BC cases among American Indian/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) (43%) and Whites (36%) for females, and highest among AI/ANs (47%) and Blacks (44%) for males. Removing smoking, the SD of BC incidence across racial/ethnic groups was reduced for females (39%) and males (44%). Approximately 40% of cases of BC in the United States are attributable to smoking, with the highest proportion in AI/ANs for both males and females, and the lowest in Hispanics for females and Asians and Pacific Islanders for males. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with increased rates of cardiovascular disease and mortality and is linked to abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters. We aimed to explore the relationships and interactions among MetS and its components, abnormal P-wave axis (aPWA), and mortality rates., Methods: We analyzed data from 7526 adult participants with sinus rhythm recruited from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III. MetS was classified based on the NCEP ATP III-2005 definition. aPWA included all P-wave axis outside 0-75°. The National Death Index was utilized to identify survival status. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) categorized by aPWA, MetS, and their components were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models to investigate all-cause and cardiovascular mortalities., Results: Within a median follow-up period of 20.76 years, 4686 deaths were recorded, of which 1414 were attributable to cardiovascular disease. Participants with both MetS and aPWA had higher all-cause (HR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.29-1.64, interaction P = 0.043) and cardiovascular (HR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.02-1.79, interaction P-value = 0.058) mortality rates than participants without MetS and with a normal P-wave axis. Participants with the greatest number of MetS components and aPWA had a higher risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.13-2.55, P = 0.011)., Conclusions: Individuals with both aPWA and MetS have a higher risk of mortality, and those with a greater number of MetS components and aPWA have a higher risk of all-cause mortality. Background: Central obesity is a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the exact correlation between the cardiometabolic index (CMI), an indicator of central obesity, and CKD remains unclear. Here, we aimed to investigate the correlation between the CMI and CKD in the general American population., Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 64,313 members of the general population (≥ 20 years of age) with data in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2020. The individuals were grouped into three categories by CMI tertile: T1 group (n = 7,029), T2 group (n = 7,356), and T3 group (n = 7,380). Logistic regression analysis was performed, with NHANES recommended weights, to assess the association between the CMI and CKD., Results: A total of 21,765 participants were included; the overall prevalence of CKD was 12.2%. From the low to the high CMI tertile, the prevalence of CKD increased from 8.9% to 16.0% (P < 0.001). After full adjustment for confounders, the higher tertile of CMI (OR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.03 - 1.13, P = 0.002) had the higher risk of CKD. Compared with the T1 group, the groups with higher CMI levels had a higher CKD risk (T2: OR: 1.01, 95%CI: 0.87-1.18, P = 0.812; T3: OR: 1.22, 95%CI: 1.05-1.43, P = 0.013)., Conclusions: Higher CMI was independently associated with higher CKD risk in the general population., (© 2023. Through an accepted seven-step process outlined by the International Association for Medical Education, we created a high-quality questionnaire that will provide objective evaluation of prospective hand surgery fellows' goals and desires. Utilizing qualitative methodology via semistructured interviews with prospective and current hand surgery fellows from across the United States, we developed a codebook that represented desired themes within a one-year hand surgery fellowship, focusing on numerous topics including the importance of exposure to a specific pathology, curriculum, fellowship size, and location, etc. We then generated a survey, validated it among experts including current program directors, and performed cognitive interviews with the same prospective and current fellows to ensure content validity. The result was the creation of a survey, which can be employed to monitor trends in the goals and desires of prospective hand surgery applicants to ensure that fellowships remain adaptable and current., (Copyright © 2023.
