Background: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) occurs in ≈1:2000 deliveries in the United States and worldwide. The genetic underpinnings of PPCM remain poorly defined. Approximately 10% of women with PPCM harbor truncating variants in TTN (TTNtvs). Whether mutations in other genes can predispose to PPCM is not known. It is also not known if the presence of TTNtvs predicts clinical presentation or outcomes. Nor is it known if the prevalence of TTNtvs differs in women with PPCM and preeclampsia, the strongest risk factor for PPCM.Methods: Women with PPCM were retrospectively identified from several US and international academic centers, and clinical information and DNA samples were acquired. Next-generation sequencing was performed on 67 genes, including TTN, and evaluated for burden of truncating and missense variants. The impact of TTNtvs on the severity of clinical presentation, and on clinical outcomes, was evaluated.Results: Four hundred sixty-nine women met inclusion criteria. Of the women with PPCM, 10.4% bore TTNtvs (odds ratio=9.4 compared with 1.2% in the reference population; Bonferroni-corrected P [P*]=1.2×10-46). We additionally identified overrepresentation of truncating variants in FLNC (odds ratio=24.8, P*=7.0×10-8), DSP (odds ratio=14.9, P*=1.0×10-8), and BAG3 (odds ratio=53.1, P*=0.02), genes not previously associated with PPCM. This profile is highly similar to that found in nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy. Women with TTNtvs had lower left ventricular ejection fraction on presentation than did women without TTNtvs (23.5% versus 29%, P=2.5×10-4), but did not differ significantly in timing of presentation after delivery, in prevalence of preeclampsia, or in rates of clinical recovery.Conclusions: This study provides the first extensive genetic and phenotypic landscape of PPCM and demonstrates that predisposition to heart failure is an important risk factor for PPCM. The work reveals a degree of genetic similarity between PPCM and dilated cardiomyopathy, suggesting that gene-specific therapeutic approaches being developed for dilated cardiomyopathy may also apply to PPCM, and that approaches to genetic testing in PPCM should mirror those taken in dilated cardiomyopathy. Background: The contribution of psychosocial stress in the workplace to development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is not well investigated. As most studies were conducted in Europe, a further test from the USA seems well justified. The objective of the current investigation was to examine prospective associations of work stress based on the effort-reward imbalance model with risk of T2DM in a national sample of US workers. Method: Using data from the national population-based Mid-life in the United States (MIDUS) study with a prospective cohort design and a 9-year follow-up period, the effects of a ratio combining data on effort and reward at work (ER ratio) at baseline on risk of T2DM at follow-up were examined in 1493 workers who were free from diabetes at the baseline survey, applying multivariable Poisson regression analysis. Results: During the follow-up, 109 individuals (7.30%) reported onset of diabetes. The analyses demonstrated a significant association between continuous data of the E-R ratio and risk of diabetes (RR and 95% CI = 1.22 [1.02, 1.46]), after adjustment for modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors at baseline. A dose-dependent response was observed with trend analysis when using quartiles of the E-R ratio. Conclusion: In the US workers, high effort in combination with low reward at work was significantly associated with elevated risk of T2DM 9 years later. The risk profiles of diabetes should be adapted in consideration of psychosocial work environment and taken into account by conceptualizing prevention programs of chronic non-communicable diseases. Approximately 5.0% of gastric cancer (GC) patients are diagnosed before the age of 40 and are not candidates for screening programs in most countries and regions. The incidence of gastric cancer in young adults (GCYA) has declined over time in most countries except in the United States. Genetic alterations, environmental factors, and lifestyle may predispose some young adults to GC. According to molecular classifications, the cancer of most GCYA patients belongs to the genomically stable or microsatellite stable/epithelial-mesenchymal transition subtype, with the common genetic aberrations being mutations in CDH1. What characterizes GCYA are a higher prevalence in females, more aggressive tumor behaviors, diagnosis at advanced stages, fewer comorbidities and being better treatment candidates, and a similar or better survival outcome when compared with older patients. Considering the greater loss of life-years in younger patients, lowering the incidence of GC and diagnosing at a relatively early stage are the two most effective ways to decrease GC mortality. This study examined the multidimension assumption of the often-used 33-item, six-factor Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) by employing four confirmatory factor models (i.e., one-factor, first-order six-factor, second-order six-factor, and bifactor). Survey data were collected from 1155 undergraduate students in a US public university. Findings showed that the bifactor model was the best fitting model and SAS is a unidimensional instrument. The composite scores made for the six domain-specific factors, often seen in the literature, were not reliable measures for the construct of smartphone addiction and can result in misleading or even incorrect inferential test results. The most reliable and contributing items identified by the bifactor model were selected to form a short, more efficient version of SAS. A Rasch model was performed to test the psychometric properties of the shortened SAS. The new shortened SAS contains 10 items (SAS-10) and had good reliability, construct validity, and no presence of bias towards students in different gender or academic achievement groups. Additional evidence suggests a 4-category rating scale is enough to capture the construct of smartphone addiction. Finally, SAS-10 correlated to numerous external criterion variables similarly to how the extant literature would predict. Purpose This study sought to assess whether protective service workers differ from people in non-protective services occupations in their intended reactions towards people who stutter (PWS). Methods Analyses were based on questionnaire responses regarding intended reactions toward PWS from 171 protective services workers and 2595 non-protective services workers in the United States. A propensity score matching procedure was used to identify a comparison group of non-protective services workers for the protective services workers. The matching covariate variables included age, gender, years of education, familiarity with PWS, and beliefs about PWS. Results Findings indicated that protective services workers had less helpful intended behavioral reactions and more negative affective reactions towards PWS than the matched non-protective services workers. Examination of the matching covariate variables in the larger sample also indicated that protective services workers had less accurate beliefs about PWS compared to respondents not in protective services professions. Conclusion Less favorable intended reactions of protective services workers toward PWS indicate a need for protective services workers to receive training in best practices when interacting with PWS. Understanding the controllability of complex networks continues to gain traction across disciplinary fields, including the exploration of infrastructure systems such as power grids. Through topological principles, this paper investigates the controllability features of an ensemble of 58 U.S. city-level power transmission networks in seven U.S. states. To perform structural controllability analyses, the topological characteristics of the ensemble of networks are first quantified, including degree, shortest path length, clustering coefficient, meshedness and betweenness centrality, as well as the uncertainty associated with these and related properties. Then, the paper focuses on the controllability features of complex networks so as to detect the minimal sets of driver nodes to possibly control the networks given system linearity assumptions. Accordingly, a node is critical, intermittent or redundant if it acts as a driver node in all, some, or none of the potentially controllable system configurations. Moreover, this paper constructs a new methodology to quantify the probability of being a driver node among the intermittent nodes, and reveals the controllability importance of system components. Results show that a small proportion of driver nodes can provide the conditions for controlling the slow dynamics of entire power transmission networks from a topological perspective, despite variations in network sizes and configurations. This paper also reveals that the driver nodes tend to avoid high degree nodes and high triangulation sub-graph nodes as well as high betweenness centrality nodes. The identification of topological differences for different categories of nodes (critical, intermittent or redundant) could help researchers and utilities understand the conditions for future functional controllability of power networks while improving their reliability and resilience as well as facilitating their transition into smart grid systems. The primary purpose of this study was to assess whether kindergarten through twelfth grade teachers differ from people in non-teaching occupations in their reactions to people who stutter (PWS). Taking differences in age and education into account, we compared reactions to PWS between 263 teachers and 1336 non-teachers in the United States based on their responses on the Public Opinion Survey on Human Attributes-Stuttering (POSHA-S, St. Louis, 2012). Findings indicated that teachers use a greater number and variety of information sources about PWS than the general public and that male teachers do so even more than female teachers. With regard to the other POSHA-S components, accommodating/helping, knowledge/experience, and sympathy/social distancing of PWS, teachers’ responses were not significantly different from their non-teaching counterparts. Regardless of occupation, women reported reactions to PWS that are considered more accommodating and helpful to PWS than the reported reactions of men. Learning outcomes : Readers should be able to: (1) identify the challenges that students who stutter encounter in the K-12 school setting, (2) identify recommended ways teachers can react to their students who stutter, (3) summarize findings regarding teachers’ reactions to people who stutter (PWS), and (4) identify key variables that are associated with reactions to PWS. This study of firefighters shows that occupational stress, particularly reported higher-effort with lower-reward experiences at work, was significantly associated with tinnitus. Those engaged in occupational health promotion activities for firefighters and others at high risk for auditory disease should measure occupational stress and encourage stress-management activities to reduce tinnitus. Objective: This study explores the relationship between occupational stress and tinnitus among firefighters, a group often exposed to two tinnitus risk factors: high stress and noise. Methods: This cross-sectional study includes 240 firefighters in the United States. Data describing demographic characteristics, occupational stress, noise exposure, and tinnitus were collected by survey. Occupational stress was measured using the short version of the Effort-Reward Imbalance Questionnaire. Results: Forty-three percent of participants reported experiencing tinnitus within the past month. For occupational stress, higher effort (odds ratio, 1.25; 95% confidence interval, 1.05 to 1.49) and higher effort-reward ratio (odds ratio, 12.28; 95% confidence interval, 3.08 to 48.86) were associated with increased odds of tinnitus, after adjustment for demographic characteristics and noise exposure. Conclusions: Occupational stress may increase the likelihood of tinnitus for firefighters, an already at-risk group of workers. Telehealth is an important source of health care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Evidence is scarce regarding disparities in telehealth utilization in the United States. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with telehealth utilization among US adults. Our data came from the Health, Ethnicity, and Pandemic Study, a nationally representative survey conducted in October 2020, with 2554 adults ≥ 18 and an oversample of racial/ethnic minorities. Telehealth utilization was measured as self-reported teleconsultation with providers via email, text message, phone, video, and remote patient monitoring during the pandemic. Logistic regressions were performed to examine the association between telehealth use and factors at the individual, household, and community levels. Overall, 43% of the sample reported having used telehealth, representing 114.5 million adults in the nation. East and Southeast Asians used telehealth less than non-Hispanic Whites (OR = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3–0.8). Being uninsured (compared with private insurance: OR = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2–0.8), and those with limited broadband coverage in the community (OR = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3–0.8) were less likely to use telehealth. There is a need to develop and implement more equitable policies and interventions at both the individual and community levels to improve access to telehealth services and reduce related disparities. The current investigation tested life satisfaction (LS), a cognitive component of subjective well‐being, among emerging adults, in the context of individualism (I) and collectivism (C), by distinguishing both cultural and individual levels of analysis, considering their horizontal (H) and vertical (V) dimensions, and controlling age and gender effects. Emerging adults (N = 1760 university students, aged 18–25, Mage = 19.46, SDag = 1.50) located across four countries, namely China, Italy, Russia, and the USA, known to differ in the individualism index value (IDV), completed measures on the Horizontal and Vertical Individualism and Collectivism and Life Satisfaction. At the cultural level, an ANCOVA showed a significant country effects on LS. The post hoc comparisons indicated that the higher the country IDV score, the higher the average LS score, in the following order: Americans, Italians, Russians, and Chinese. At the individual level, LS was unrelated to HI and VI. Instead, it was associated with HC and VC. The positive link between LS and VC suggested an important role of family connectedness on LS across different cultures during emerging adulthood. BACKGROUND: This article presents descriptive findings from a sub-sample of 414 people with multiple sclerosis (MS) residing in rural areas that was derived from a national survey of the employment concerns of Americans with MS. OBJECTIVE: Respondents were asked to evaluate 38 employment concerns items on two dimensions, importance and satisfaction, for the purpose of identifying strengths and weaknesses in the employment policies and practices affecting the labor force participation of Americans with MS. RESULTS: Results revealed a total of 13 employment strengths and 25 employment weaknesses that must be addressed in direct service and advocacy efforts if more rural residents with MS are to continue their careers while coping with this intrusive and unpredictable disease. Background: Research on mental health disparities by race-ethnicity in the United States (US) during COVID-19 is limited and has generated mixed results. Few studies have included Asian Americans as a whole or by subgroups in the analysis. Methods: Data came from the 2020 Health, Ethnicity, and Pandemic Study, based on a nationally representative sample of 2,709 community-dwelling adults in the US with minorities oversampled. The outcome was psychological distress. The exposure variable was race-ethnicity, including four major racial-ethnic groups and several Asian ethnic subgroups in the US. The mediators included experienced discrimination and perceived racial bias toward one's racial-ethnic group. Weighted linear regressions and mediation analyses were performed. Results: Among the four major racial-ethnic groups, Hispanics (22%) had the highest prevalence of severe distress, followed by Asians (18%) and Blacks (16%), with Whites (14%) having the lowest prevalence. Hispanics' poorer mental health was largely due to their socioeconomic disadvantages. Within Asians, Southeast Asians (29%), Koreans (27%), and South Asians (22%) exhibited the highest prevalence of severe distress. Their worse mental health was mainly mediated by experienced discrimination and perceived racial bias. Conclusions: Purposefully tackling racial prejudice and discrimination is necessary to alleviate the disproportionate psychological distress burden in racial-ethnic minority groups. The opioid crisis in the United States (U.S.) is widespread and increasing in severity, and psychosocial exposures have been identified as potential risk factors. We examined associations of employment status with opioid misuse in a large, nationally representative, population-based sample in the U.S. Data were from the 2019 National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an annual cross-sectional survey. The association of employment status with opioid misuse in 40,143 participants was examined by multivariable logistic regression, adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, marital status, household income, educational attainment, medical insurance status, physical health conditions and depression. Analyses were weighted to represent a nationally representative sample of adults in the U.S. In NSDUH 2019, 3.82% of American individuals reported past-year opioid misuse. After taking relevant variables into account, compared to workers who were employed with normal working hours (35–40 h/week), those who were currently unemployed had higher odds of opioid misuse (fully adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were 1.40 [1.09, 1.79]). Compared to workers employed with normal working hours, those who were in school/training or retired had lower odds of opioid misuse. Short or long working hours were not associated with opioid misuse. Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text Objective: We examined associations of negative employment changes during the COVID-19 pandemic with mental health in a national sample of U.S. workers, and whether the associations differed by race. Methods: Data were from the Health, Ethnicity, and Pandemic Study, a cross-sectional survey. The effects of negative employment changes on psychological distress in 1510 workers were examined via linear regression, and stratified analyses were conducted across racial subgroups. Results: After adjustment for covariates, compared to workers with no change in employment, those who experienced permanent job loss had the highest psychological distress (β and 95% CI = 3.27 [1.89, 4.65]). Permanent job loss had the greatest effect on psychological distress in Blacks and Asians. Distortion‐induced fatigue cracking is a concern for many aging steel bridges in the United States. Human visual inspections to characterize fatigue cracks have many drawbacks including inconsistencies in identification, significant time and monetary costs, and safety risks posed to the lives of both inspectors and the traveling public due to lane closures. Digital image correlation (DIC) is a vision‐based technology which has shown promise for identifying and characterizing fatigue cracks. Three‐dimensional DIC measurements can capture full‐field displacements and strains, allowing for detection and characterization of both in‐plane and distortion‐induced fatigue cracks. This paper describes an experimental study in which a half‐scale steel girder to crossframe subassembly was subjected to distortion‐induced fatigue loading to produce multiple geometrically complex cracks. A DIC‐based crack characterization methodology was applied to quantify the cracks, which was successful at characterizing cracks propagating in the girder web but struggled to characterize horizontal cracks. Additional work is needed to improve the accuracy of the DIC‐based crack characterization methodology to use as an automated bridge inspection tool. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the experiences and concerns of Hispanic Americans with multiple sclerosis (MS), especially how their experiences and concerns compare to those of Caucasian Americans with MS. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in satisfaction with the overall employment situation between two matched samples of adults with MS, namely, Hispanics and Caucasians. METHODS: Participants in this study responded to a national survey of the employment and community living concerns of people with MS. A propensity score matching (PSM) procedure was used to match participants based on demographic and MS-related variables. RESULTS: A two-sample Hotelling T2 test revealed no statistically significant between-group differences on satisfaction regarding fair treatment in the workplace but between-group differences were observed on satisfaction regarding legal rights and personal-environmental resources related to work. Background: Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) immunoglobulin G (IgG) seropositivity is prevalent but its relation with leukocyte telomere length (LTL), a cellular aging biomarker, is unclear. Methods: Among 3,472 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycle 1999‐2000, LTL was measured with the quantitative polymerase chain reaction. H pylori IgG was measured by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays and defined as seropositivity with an immune status ratio score > 0.9. We used linear regression models to examine the relation of H pylori IgG seropositivity with continuous LTL and logistic regression for the relation with short LTL (<10th percentile of the population distribution) adjusting for potential confounders. We stratified the analyses by a priori selected variables. Results: Population prevalence of H pylori IgG seropositivity was 31.5% in the overall population with higher prevalence found in those with older age, other races than non‐Hispanic whites, lower education, and being born out of the United States. Continuous LTL was non‐significantly shorter in those with H Pylori IgG seropositivity versus seronegativity (mean difference = −40.3 bp, 95% CI: −112.4, 31.9). This difference was not significant after adjusting for potential confounders nor stratifying by potential effect modifiers. H Pylori IgG seropositivity was significantly associated with short LTL among the elderly (55‐75 years, adjusted OR: 3.06, 95% CI: 1.17, 7.99), but not in the overall population (OR: 1.28, 95% CI: 0.81‐2.02). Conclusion: H Pylori IgG seropositivity was not associated with continuous LTL in the general population but may be associated with an excessively short LTL in the elderly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pembrolizumab (Pembro) in combination with chemotherapy has been approved for the treatment of pretreated advanced NSCLC in the United States and China for its significant efficacy. However, the cost‐effectiveness is unknown considering Pembro's high price. The impact of programmed death ligand 1 (PD‐L1) test on the cost‐effectiveness is also unknown. The current study assessed the cost‐effectiveness of combination therapy for nonsquamous NSCLC from the United States and China public payers' perspective. Materials and Methods: A literature‐based Markov model was conducted using KEYNOTE‐189 trial data to compare cost and quality‐adjusted life years (QALYs) of three treatment strategies for nonsquamous NSCLC: Pembro‐chemotherapy combination and chemotherapy strategy without PD‐L1 test, and treatment strategy according to their PD‐L1 status. Results: In base case analysis, the combination strategy generated an additional 0.78 QALYs and 0.59 QALYs over chemotherapy in the United States and China respectively, resulting in an ICER of $132 392/QALY in the United States and $92 533/QALY in China. In the PD‐L1 ≥1% base case, the ICERs were $77 754/QALY and $56 768/QALY respectively in the United States and China for PD‐L1 test strategy. In the PD‐L1 ≥50% base case, the ICERs were $44 731/QALY and $34 388/QALY respectively in the United States and China for PD‐L1 test strategy. Lowering Pembro price can also partly decrease the ICERs. Conclusion: Compared with chemotherapy, the combination strategy is not cost‐effective for the treatment of NSCLC in the American and Chinese health care system at WTP threshold of $100 000/QALY for the United States and $27 351/QALY for China. Using PD‐L1 test for patient selection and price reduction could improve the cost‐effective probabilities of immunotherapy for nonsquamous NSCLC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Although risk stratification of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is most frequently performed using the simplified MCL International Prognostic Index (sMIPI), the identification of host-related factors and tumor microenvironment, including absolute monocyte counts (AMC) and peripheral blood T lymphocyte subsets, especially absolute natural killer cell counts (ANKC) has been suggested to be critical in the prediction of prognosis and the guidance of treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed at investigating whether peripheral blood ANKC and AMC at diagnosis had an impact on MCL prognosis. METHODS: A total of 92 newly diagnosed MCL patients was enrolled in this retrospective study. Flow cytometric analysis was conducted on fresh peripheral blood samples with a FACSCalibur flow cytometer (BD Biosciences, San Jose, CA, USA). RESULTS: The median follow-up was 42 months (range, 2–144 months) and the median overall survival (OS) of all cases was 45 months. High AMC (> 0.6 × 10 9 /L) was the parameter associated with inferior progression free survival (PFS) (P = 0.044) and poor OS (P = 0.028) while low ANKC (⩽ 0.1 × 10 9 /L) was associated with unfavorable OS (P = 0.023) by univariable analysis. Multivariable analysis revealed that only low ANKC (⩽ 0.1 × 10 9 /L) was statistically significant in worse OS (P = 0.009) independent of sMIPI. CONCLUSIONS: Low ANKC (⩽ 0.1 × 10 9 /L) proved to be a significant predictor of inferior OS in patients with MCL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We imaged the region around Asteroid (4) Vesta in nine long exposures using the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescope on May 14 and 16, 2007 to conduct a deep search for satellites in support of NASA’s Dawn mission that orbited (4) Vesta in 2011–2012. Several previous search efforts have been undertaken, but no satellites were detected. Our search covered distances from 14 to 260 Vesta radii and searched to a limiting magnitude of 22.5±0.4 in HST’s wide-band red filter (F702W). Our upper limit for possible satellites corresponds to a satellite just 22±4m in radius, assuming the same optical properties as Vesta. Our upper limit is ∼10 times smaller than the best limit of previous searches. In situ satellite searches by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft will probe regions closer to Vesta than our effort reported here. Abstract: One avenue to enhance CdTe cell performance is to improve the optical transmission of the transparent conductive oxide (TCO)/window layer stack. In this paper, we examine soda-lime float glass coated with an Al-doped ZnO layer and a buffer layer. The possible advantages of using a ZnO-based TCO include reduced surface roughness, improved transparency, and an integrated buffer layer that can be optimized for use in a CdTe PV device. Device processing was modified to address the chemical and thermal differences between the ZnO-based TCO stack produced by Saint-Gobain and the TCOs previously used at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). These process modifications produced ~8% efficiency for devices without a buffer layer. Objective: GH and IGFs have mitogenic properties, causing speculation that GH treatment could increase risk of malignancy. While studies in GH-treated childhood cancer survivors have suggested a slight increase in second neoplasms, studies in GH-treated adults have been equivocal. Design: Incidence of de novo and second cancers was evaluated in 6840 GH-treated and 940 non GH-treated adult patients in the Hypopituitary Control and Complications Study pharmacoepidemiological database Methods: Evident cancer cases were evaluated in the main analysis, with sensitivity analyses including probable and possible cancers. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for cancers were calculated using Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results for the USA and GLOBOCAN for all other countries. Results: During the mean follow-up of 3.7 years/GH-treated patient, 142 evident cancer cases were identified, giving an overall SIR of 0.88 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.74-1.04); 95% CIs included the value of 1.0 for each country examined. The SIR for GH-treated patients from the USA (71 cases) was 0.94 (95% CI 0.73-1.18), and for non GH-treated patients from the USA (27 cases) was 1.16 (95% CI 0.76-1.69). For GH-treated patients from the USA aged !35 years, the SIR (six cases) was 3.79 (1.39-8.26), with SIR not elevated for all other age categories; SIR for patients from the USAwith childhood onset (CO) GH deficiency (GHD) was 2.74 (95% CI 1.18-5.41). The SIR for colorectal cancer in GH-treated patients (11 cases) was 0.60 (95% CI 0.30-1.08). Conclusions:With relatively short follow-up, the overall primary cancer risk in 6840 patients receiving GH as adults was not increased. Background: Studies assessing sex differences in the associations of psychosocial strain with depression have shown mixed and inconsistent results. Our objective was to examine prospective associations of job strain and family strain with risk of major depressive episode (MDE) among United States workers, as well as assess potential effect modification by sex.Methods: Using data from the nationally representative and population-based Mid-life in the United States (MIDUS) study with a prospective cohort design and a 9-year follow-up period, the effects of job strain and family strain at baseline on risk of MDE within the 12 months prior to the follow-up assessment were examined in 1581 workers (805 men, 776 women) who were free from MDE within the 12 months prior to the baseline survey, by multivariate Poisson regression analysis.Results: After adjustment for relevant covariates, there was evidence for effect modification by sex for the association between job strain and MDE but not for the association between family strain and MDE. Indeed, high job strain was prospectively associated with the risk of MDE (RR and 95% CI = 2.14 [1.14, 4.03]) in men but not in women. Moreover, high family strain was prospectively associated with a higher risk of MDE (RR and 95% CI = 1.57 [1.05, 2.37]) in the whole sample.Conclusion: Family strain was associated with risk of MDE regardless of the sex of a person. Abstract: We consider the hypothesis that the layering observed on the surface of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 from the Deep Impact spacecraft and identified on other comet nuclei imaged by spacecraft (i.e., 19P/Borrelly and 81P/Wild 2) is ubiquitous on Jupiter family cometary nuclei and is an essential element of their internal structure. The observational characteristics of the layers on 9P/Tempel 1 are detailed and considered in the context of current theories of the accumulation and dynamical evolution of cometary nuclei. The works of Donn [Donn, B.D., 1990. Astron. Astrophys. 235, 441–446], Sirono and Greenberg [Sirono, S.-I., Greenberg, J.M., 2000. Icarus 145, 230–238] and the experiments of Wurm et al. [Wurm, G., Paraskov, G., Krauss, O., 2005. Icarus 178, 253–263] on the collision physics of porous aggregate bodies are used as basis for a conceptual model of the formation of layers. We propose a new model for the interiors of Jupiter family cometary nuclei, called the talps or “layered pile” model, in which the interior consists of a core overlain by a pile of randomly stacked layers. We discuss how several cometary characteristics—layers, surface texture, indications of flow, compositional inhomogeneity, low bulk density low strength, propensity to split, etc., might be explained in terms of this model. Background: The Demand Control Support Questionnaire (DCSQ) is an established self-reported tool to measure a stressful work environment. Validated German and English versions are however currently missing. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the psychometric properties of German and English versions of the DCSQ among white-collar employees in Switzerland and the US. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 499 employees in Switzerland and 411 in the US, respectively. The 17-item DCSQ with three scales assessed psychosocial stress at work (psychological demands, decision latitude, and social support at work). Depressive symptoms were measured by the 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire. Cronbach’s α and item-total correlations tested the scale reliability (internal consistency). Construct validity of the questionnaire was examined using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Logistic regressions estimated associations of each scale and job strain with depressive symptoms (criterion validity). Results: In both samples, all DCSQ scales presented satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach’s α ≥ 0.72; item-total correlations ≥ 0.33), and EFA showed the 17 items loading on three factors, which is in line with the theoretically assumed structure of the DCSQ construct. Moreover, all three scales as well as high job strain were significantly associated with depressive symptoms. The associations were stronger in the US sample. Conclusions: The German and the English versions of the DCSQ seem to be reliable and valid instruments to measure psychosocial stress based on the job demand-control-support model in the workplace of white-collar employees in Switzerland and the US.
