The article provides information on a retrospective study which determined statistically the likelihood of response to a given salvage therapy in different clinical subsets of pediatric patients with chemoresistant neuroblastoma (NB). A background on the clinical characteristics of patients treated with high-dose cyclophosphamide, topotecan, and vincristine (HD-CTV) is given. A discussion on the research findings is detailed.

The authors say that neuroblastoma is considered to be the most common extracranial solid tumor of childhood. They refer to the data, which reveals that 90 percent of around 650 cases diagnosed annually in the U.S. affect infants and toddlers. Random genetic mutations are seen as the contributing factors of neuroblastoma.

Despite evidence supporting the effectiveness of best practices of infection prevention and management, many surgeons worldwide fail to implement them. Evidence-based practices tend to be underused in routine practice. Surgeons with knowledge in surgical infections should provide feedback to prescribers and integrate best practices among surgeons and implement changes within their team. Identifying a local opinion leader to serve as a champion within the surgical department may be important.
