Research predominantly focuses on problematic behaviors in children with symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to explain why they are disliked by their classroom peers. By contrast, the current study explores characteristics of peers that are associated with them disliking classmates with ADHD symptoms. To do so, we undertook a novel methodological approach using hierarchical linear modeling to examine the strength of the association between child characteristics, their sociometric ratings given to classmates, and the recipients' ADHD symptom levels. Participants were 194 children (Grades K-4) in 12 classrooms. Using the sociometric method, children rated their liking versus disliking of each classmate. Children's ADHD symptoms were reported by the teacher. Children's self-reported stigma about ADHD, their own sociometric ratings received, and teacher ratings of children's academic competence were collected. Results suggested that children who reported more stigma about ADHD, and who were more socially and academically competent, had a stronger negative association between the sociometric ratings they gave and the recipients' ADHD symptoms (i.e., were more likely to dislike classmates with ADHD symptoms). These effects were strongest at the end of the academic year relative to the beginning of the year. Implications for interventions targeting the peer group are discussed.

Although many disciplines saw increases in manuscript submissions coinciding with lockdown measures, numerous studies have documented widening gender gaps in academic productivity. Chi-squared analyses of gendered trends in first author manuscript submission in three school psychology journals during the initial phase of COVID-19 compared to the same time frame in the preceding 3 years did not reveal any significant associations. There was a significant increase over time in the gender gap, with a trend of more female authors than male authors. Women school psychology researchers may not have experienced similar detriments to productivity as in other disciplines, or such detriments were not reflected in submission patterns during this time frame. Limitations of the study and implications for school psychology are provided.

Objectives: A country's social welfare system may play an important role in maternal employment. This study compared the labor market participation of mothers of children within the United States (U.S.) and Norway to examine whether the child's age and severity of the ASD affected mothers' employment differently between the two countries. Methods: The 2019 National Survey of Children's Health was used for the U.S. analysis, and the 2019 administrative register data were used for the Norwegian analysis. A logit model was used to analyze the impact of a child's age and ASD severity on maternal employment in the U.S. and Norway. We presented the results as average marginal effects obtained from the logistic regression analyses. Results: After adjusting for mothers' sociodemographic variables and the child's age, U.S. mothers of children with mild ASD and moderate/severe ASD had respectively 12 and 25% points lower probability of being employed than U.S. mothers of children without special health care needs. In Norway, mothers of children with moderate/severe ASD had a 13% points lower probability of employment than mothers without special health care needs. The probability of being employed for mothers caring for a child with ASD was significantly greater as the child got older in both countries. Conclusions for Practice: The employment gap was more substantial in the U.S. than in Norway. A general high employment participation rate among women and an elaborated welfare state and policy package seem to benefit employment among mothers of children with ASD in Norway. Metaphorical language describing the COVID-19 pandemic as a war has been pervasive in public discourse (e.g. "the pandemic is a war," "the virus is an enemy," and "the vaccine is a weapon"). This study employs an online survey experiment (N = 551 U.S. adults) to examine the impact of war metaphors compared to non-metaphorical literal frames and fire metaphors (e.g. "the pandemic is a wildfire"). War metaphors exhibited little advantage over literal frames across a variety of desirable outcomes (i.e. the adoption of pro-health behaviors against COVID-19, perceived solidarity and collective responsibility to curb the pandemic, and intentions to discuss and share the health news with others). However, this study revealed some benefits of war metaphors over fire metaphors. Compared with fire metaphors, health news featuring war metaphors increased both positive emotions and perceived threats of COVID-19, which in turn promoted pro-health behaviors against COVID-19 and perceived solidarity to cope with the public health crisis. Moreover, positive emotions in response to war metaphors also indirectly encouraged the retransmission of science-based COVID-19 health news. This study thus showcased the benefits and limitations of war metaphors and revealed the mediating roles of perceived threats and positive emotions in explaining war metaphorical framing effects. This exploratory research study aimed to understand teacher candidates' experiences and perspectives in a global class project and to explore a way to develop global understanding in a teacher education program, by means of technology rather than study abroad. Using a qualitative approach, seven U.S. education majors were given opportunities to communicate online with teacher candidates in South Korea, while creating and discussing a concept map and movie presentation about "good teaching" on the Learning Management System. Results showed how the preservice teachers' global perspectives of education were developed through the project, and confirmed the significance of instrumental and communicative learning in transformative learning as well as direct communication and comparison with people from a different context using a carefully designed task-based course and immersive learning environment.

The authors describe a collective process of validating community-based work that actively highlights Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHP)-led partnerships with community leaders and other stakeholders. Topics discussed include community-driven approaches for recruitment, changes to data infrastructure, and funding and timeline considerations.

Background: Patients with ventricular assist devices (VADs) represent a growing population presenting to Emergency Medical Services (EMS), but little is known about their prehospital care. This study aimed to characterize current EMS protocols in the United States for patients with VADs. Methods: States with state-wide EMS protocols were included. Protocols were obtained from the state EMS website. If not available, the office of the state medical director was contacted. For each state, protocols were analyzed for patient and VAD assessment and treatment variables. Results: Of 32 states with state-wide EMS protocols, 21 had VAD-specific protocols. With 17 (81%) states noting a pulse may not be palpable, protocols recommended assessing alternate measures of perfusion and mean arterial pressure (MAP; 15 [71%]). Assessment of VAD was advised through listening for pump hum (20 [95%]) and alarms (20 [95%]) and checking the power supply (15 [71%]). For treatment, EMS prehospital consultation was required to begin chest compression in three (14%) states, and mechanical (device) chest compressions were not permitted in two (10%) states. Contact information for VAD coordinator was listed in a minority of five (24%) states. Transport of VAD equipment/backup bag was advised in 18 (86%) states. Discussion: This national analysis of EMS protocols found VAD-specific EMS protocols are not universally adopted in the United States and are variable when implemented, highlighting a need for VAD teams to partner with EMS agencies to inform standardized protocols that optimize these patients' care. Service offshoring raises the fear of job loss for high‐skilled workers, unlike goods offshoring, because workers at home compete with highly educated workers in low‐income countries. This paper examines whether the increase in the United States's service offshoring to India has reduced the domestic employment of the occupations with greater exposure to Indian service imports. To account for endogeneity, I instrument for the growth of the United States's service imports from India by exploiting the change in Indian exports to European countries. Service offshoring reduces total employment from 2000 to 2006; however, this effect disappears overall and becomes positive for college‐educated workers in the later period from 2006 to 2016. Unlike goods offshoring, the employment effect is largely driven by college‐educated workers, and the employment growth in the later period is larger. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To compare the cost-effectiveness of drug-coated balloon angioplasty (DCB) versus plain old balloon angioplasty (POBA) for treatment of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) stenosis. Methods: A Markov model was created to compare DCB versus POBA for AVF stenosis over a 2-year time horizon from a United States payer's perspective. Probabilities related to complications, restenosis, retreatment, and all-cause mortality were obtained from published literature. Costs were calculated using Medicare reimbursement rates and data from published cost analyses, inflation-adjusted to 2021. Health outcomes were measured with quality-adjusted life years (QALY). Probabilistic and deterministic sensitivity analyses were performed with a willingness-to-pay threshold of $100,000/QALY. Results: Base case calculation showed better quality-of-life outcomes but increased cost with POBA compared to DCB, with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of $27,413/QALY, making POBA the more cost-effective strategy in the base case model. Sensitivity analyses showed that DCB becomes cost-effective if the 24-month mortality rate after DCB is no more than 3.4% higher than that after POBA. In secondary analyses where mortality rates were equalized, DCB was more cost-effective than POBA until its additional cost reached more than $4213 per intervention. Conclusion: When modeled from a payer's perspective over 2 years, the cost utility of DCB versus POBA varies with mortality outcomes. POBA is cost-effective if 2-year all-cause mortality after DCB is greater than 3.4% higher than after POBA. If 2-year mortality after DCB is less than 3.4% higher than after POBA, DCB is cost-effective until its additional cost per procedure exceeds $4213 more than POBA. Objective: The study estimates the number of years after age 65 that Mexican Americans live with likely dementia and the impact of dementia on community-based services (CBS) use by nativity. Methods: Using the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly Sullivan methods are employed to predict duration of dementia and logistic regressions identify the predictors of service utilization. Results: Foreign-born women spend more years than other groups with dementia. The foreign-born are more likely to use out-of-home services, whereas U.S.-born are more likely to use in-home services. The foreign-born with dementia of relatively recent onset had the highest probability of service use. Discussion: Given the high cost of institutional care and availability of family caregivers, community-based services are a potentially useful alternative for the growing Mexican-American population living with dementia. The article describes the lessons learned from engaging Chinese, Hmong,and Vietnamese Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic through the implementation of the community-engaged research project, Individual and Family Oriented Responsive Messaging Education (INFORMED). Topics covered include the anti-Asian hate and distrust created during the COVID-19 era which are a challenge to empowering the community, and examples of strategies derived from these observations and lessons learned.

Background: Functional Mitral Regurgitation (FMR) associated with coronary artery disease affects nearly 3 million patients in the United States. Both myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemia contribute to FMR development but uncertainty as to which patients will respond to revascularization (REVASC) of ischemia alone prevents rational decision making about FMR therapy. The aim of this study was to create patient-specific cardiac MRI (CMR) informed finite element (FE) models of the left ventricle (LV), calculate regional LV systolic contractility and then use optimized systolic material properties to simulate the effect of revascularization (virtual REVASC). Methods: We describe a novel FE method able to predict the effect of myocardial ischemia on regional LV function. CMR was obtained in five patients with multi-vessel coronary disease and FMR before and 3 months after percutaneous REVASC and a single healthy volunteer. Patient-specific FE models were created and divided into 17 sectors where the systolic contractility parameter, T m a x of each sector was a function of regional stress perfusion (SP-CMR) and myocardial infarction (LGE-CMR) scores. Sector-specific circumferential and longitudinal end-systolic strain and LV volume from CSPAMM were used in a formal optimization to determine the sector based myocardial contractility, T m a x and ischemia effect, α. Virtual REVASC was simulated by setting α to zero. Results: The FE optimization successfully converged with good agreement between calculated and experimental end-systolic strain and LV volumes. Specifically, the optimized T max for the healthy myocardium for five patients and the volunteer was 495.1, 336.8, 173.5, 227.9, 401.4, and 218.9 kPa. The optimized α was found to be 1.0, 0.44, and 0.08 for Patients 1, 2, and 3, and 0 for Patients 4 and 5. The calculated average of radial strain for Patients 1, 2, and 3 at baseline and after virtual REVASC was 0.23 and 0.25, respectively. Conclusion: We developed a novel computational method able to predict the effect of myocardial ischemia in patients with FMR. This method can be used to predict the effect of ischemia on the regional myocardium and promises to facilitate better understanding of FMR response to REVASC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Developing an understanding of fractions is critical, as it is the first connection of whole‐number properties to rational numbers within a single framework. The unique properties of fractions necessitate solution processes that are distinctive and often more complicated than whole‐number processes, resulting in many students struggling with fractions. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the relationship of US students' solution pathway preferences to accuracy of addition with fractions by achievement group. Results indicate that a preferred solution pathway was used by all three groups and significantly influenced solution accuracy, especially for students with learning disabilities. Our findings reveal a direct link to solution pathway preference and practical application when teaching computation of fractions to struggling students and students with learning disabilities. Purpose: A systematic review was conducted to understand self‐rated health (SRH) of Arab immigrants in the United States (U.S.). Background: Arab immigrants are one of the fastest growing populations in the United States. There is some evidence that Arab immigrants face health issues including low SRH. However, no study has been done to synthesize research on SRH of Arab immigrants. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to guide this review. A search was conducted on seven databases. Results: Six studies met the systematic review criteria. The available evidence indicated that rates of fair/poor SRH among Arab immigrants ranged between 4.66% and 41%. Arabic‐speaking immigrants, women, older immigrants, and socioeconomically disadvantaged immigrants had the highest rates of fair/poor SRH. Implications: Health care providers need to assess patient's SRH and identify barriers to optimal health and health practices related to SRH of Arab immigrants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Although empirical evidence shows that mothers of children with developmental disabilities (DDs) are at risk for poor mental and physical health, the relative contribution of maternal and child characteristics, including sleep quality, remain unclear. Objectives: The aims of this study were to compare select maternal (sleep quality, caregiving stress, and other sociodemographic variables) and child characteristics (sleep and behavior problems) between mothers with worse mental and physical health and those with better mental and physical health and to determine the contribution of selected characteristics on mental and physical health in mothers of school-age children (ages 6–12 years) with DDs. Methods: This cross-sectional, correlational study included a convenience sample of 40 mothers of children with DDs. Mothers completed a set of questionnaires, including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Zarit Burden Interview, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the 36-Item, Short-Form Health Survey Version 2. Results: Results from bivariate logistic regression modeling showed that mothers with high depressive symptoms and worse physical health, as compared to mothers with low depressive symptoms and better physical health, reported significantly higher caregiving stress, poor sleep quality, and more chronic health conditions and more behavior and sleep problems in children with DDs. A multivariable logistic regression model showed mother's sleep quality was significantly associated with increased risk of high levels of depression (OR = 1.934, 95% CI [1.106, 3.385], p =.021) and increased risk of worse physical health (OR = 1.920, 95% CI [1.086, 3.393], p =.025). Capitalizing on the newly available and consistent coding of detailed occupations for the General Social Surveys (GSS), this article examines the link between class origins and public support for redistribution in the United States from 1977 through 2018. The findings reveal significant net associations between class origins and preferences for redistribution. Individuals with farming-class or working-class origins are more supportive of government action to reduce inequality than individuals with salariat-class origins. These class-origin differences are associated with individuals' current socioeconomic characteristics but are not fully accounted for by these factors. In addition, individuals in more privileged class positions have increased their support for redistribution over time. Attitudes toward federal income taxes are also analyzed as an additional measure of redistribution preferences. Objectives: A sense of calling is a concept with religious and theological roots; however, it is unclear whether contemporary physicians in the United States still embrace this concept in their practice of medicine. This study assesses the association between religious characteristics and endorsing a sense of calling among practicing primary care physicians (PCPs) and psychiatrists.Methods: In 2009, we surveyed a stratified random sample of 2016 PCPs and psychiatrists in the United States. Physicians were asked whether they agreed with the statement, "For me, the practice of medicine is a calling." Primary predictors included demographic and self-reported religious characteristics, (eg, attendance, affiliation, importance of religion, intrinsic religiosity) and spirituality.Results: Among eligible respondents, the response rate was 63% (896/1427) for PCPs and 64% (312/487) for psychiatrists. A total of 40% of PCPs and 42% of psychiatrists endorsed a strong sense of calling. PCPs and psychiatrists who were more spiritual and/or religious as assessed by all four measures were more likely to report a strong sense of calling in the practice of medicine. Nearly half of Muslim (46%) and Catholic (45%) PCPs and the majority of evangelical Protestant PCPs (60%) report a strong sense of calling in their practice, and PCPs with these affiliations were more likely to endorse a strong sense of calling than those with no affiliation (26%, bivariate P < 0.001). We found similar trends for psychiatrists.Conclusions: In this national study of PCPs and psychiatrists, we found that PCPs who considered themselves religious were more likely to report a strong sense of calling in the practice of medicine. Although this cross-sectional study cannot be used to make definitive causal inferences between religion and developing a strong sense of calling, PCPs who considered themselves religious are more likely to embrace the concept of calling in their practice of medicine. This study examines the socioeconomic advancement of Korean immigrants in California from 1905 to 1920. Based on county archives, special collections, oral histories, U.S. government documents, contemporary studies, and newspapers, this study analyzes how the Korean immigrants in California were influenced by the World War I rice boom and made efforts to develop their status in California at the start of the twentieth century. Successful rice cultivation started in California around 1912 and this new agricultural development provided opportunities for Koreans to make the transition from migratory farm laborers to rice farmers. This study presents the unique adjustment pattern of exceptional Korean immigrants who made significant efforts to adjust to Californian society and improve their socioeconomic status; however, in this process, they continued to strongly express their Korean identity and contributed to Korean independence rather than develop an outward loyalty to the United States. Korean immigrants' successful adjustment to California resulted from their combined efforts to maintain their Korean identity, overcome racial discrimination that denied them citizenship rights, and promote the upward mobility of ethnic Koreans. We examined the relationship between serum 25- hydroxyvitaminD(25[OH]D) and all-cause mortality. We searched biomedical databases for articles that assessed 2 ormore categories of 25(OH)D from January 1, 1966, to January 15, 2013. We identified 32 studies and pooled the data. The hazard ratio for allcause mortality comparing the lowest (0–9 nanograms per milliliter [ng/mL]) to the highest (> 30 ng/mL) category of 25(OH)D was 1.9 (95% confidence interval = 1.6, 2.2; P < .001). Serum 25 (OH)D concentrations less than or equal to 30 ng/mL were associated with higher all-causemortality than concentrations greater than 30 ng/mL (P < .01). Our findings agree with a National Academy of Sciences report, except the cutoff point for all-cause mortality reduction in this analysis was greater than 30 ng/mL rather than greater than 20 ng/mL. There are a number of oral agents emerging as potential disease-modifying agents in multiple sclerosis (MS). Among these investigational agents, teriflunomide has shown promise in large, multicenter, phase III clinical trials with respect to safety and efficacy in relapsing MS patients, and is the latest disease-modifying agent approved for use in MS patients in the United States. This review will summarize teriflunomide's historical development, clinical pharmacology, studies in animals, clinical trials, and safety data, and will end with a discussion of the role of teriflunomide in MS in the context of existing treatment options. Our purpose in this study was to examine the patterns of physical activity and demographic characteristics associated with those patterns in Korean immigrants in the United States. Participants were 197 women, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was utilized. The inactive pattern was the most frequent pattern in all domains of physical activity except household physical activity. There were differences among the patterns of physical activity that were associated with variations in demographic characteristics. Health care providers who serve immigrants should assess physical activity level and demographic characteristics of the immigrants to enhance their physical activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chronic liver disease encompasses a large number of hepatic disorders. One of the most important etiologies of liver disease is drug-induced liver disease, which is the leading cause of liver failure in patients referred for liver transplantation in the United States. Drug-induced liver disease can present in all forms of acute and chronic liver disease with highly variable clinical presentations. There is no effective treatment for most drug-induced liver disease and the recognition and prevention of drug-induced liver disease remain the most important management strategy. Drug dosing in patients with liver disease represents an even more challenging task to clinicians, as there is only scant information on biomarkers that can be used to predict the pharmacokinetic changes of drugs in patients with underlying liver disease. Several factors contribute to alterations in drugs metabolism and clearance in cirrhotic patients, including the severity of the liver disease and the metabolic pathways of each individual drug. Only general guidelines on dosage adjustment in patients with hepatic impairment are available. When drugs with extensive hepatic metabolism are required in patients with preexisting liver disease, benefit of therapeutic effect must be evaluated against the risk of toxicity, and the drugs must be initiated with extreme caution with appropriate dosage reduction. Depression is one of the most prevalent health problems for immigrants in the United States (U.S.) and it has been associated with the process of acculturation. A cross-sectional study was conducted to identify subgroups of Korean immigrant women based on their Korean as well as American acculturation levels using cluster analysis and to determine whether these subgroups differ on depressive symptoms in 200 Korean immigrant women aged 20–64. Cluster analysis identified four as the most appropriate number of subgroups: they were designated as Korean cluster (45%), Marginalized cluster (26%), American cluster (22%), and Bicultural cluster (7%). Korean cluster had high scores on Korean acculturation and low American acculturation, Marginalized had low for both, American had high scores on American acculturation, low for Korean acculturation, and Bicultural had high scores for both. Women in the Marginalized subgroup reported significantly higher depression scores than women in the American and Korean clusters. It is important to identify immigrants who do not relate to either their heritage culture or the new host culture and address their mental health risk issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three experiments were performed to characterize the physiological responses of an Eastern United States shipper muskmelon (Cuctimis melo L. var. reticulatus 'Athena') harvested preripe (% slip) and during ripening (half-slip, full-slip) to 1 μL·L-1 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), a potent ethylene antagonist effective at significantly extending the time required for climacteric fruit to complete ripening. In the first experiment, preripe fruit were treated with 1-MCP (18 hour, 20 °C) before storage at 15 °C. Softening of preripe 'Athena' was significantly suppressed in response to 1-MCP, with firmness of control and 1-MCP-treated fruit declining ≈50% and ≈36% through 12 and 18 days of storage at 15 °C, respectively. By 21 days of storage, firmness of l-MCP-treated remained near 70 N, minimally within the upper range of whole-fruit firmness values considered acceptable for consumption (50-75 N). Fruit treated with 1-MCP exhibited significantly lower ethylene production, respiratory rates, and electrolyte leakage throughout storage. In a second experiment, muskmelon were treated with 1-MCP (18 hours, 20 °C) at progressively advanced stages of ripening (half- and fullslip stages). Softening was significantly suppressed in half-slip fruit, declining ≈64% and ≈23% in control and l-MCP-treated fruit, respectively, during 16 days of storage at 15 °C. Advanced-ripening, full-slip fruit were similarly affected, softening ≈60% and ≈25% in control and 1-MCP-treated fruit, respectively, during 10 days at 15 °C. in a third experiment designed to simulate possible commercial handling protocols, full-slip muskmelon were treated with 1-MCP (24 hours, 10 °C) and held at 10 °C for 5 days before transfer to 20 °C. Mesocarp firmness of 1-MCP and control fruit within 2 days of transfer to 20 °C had decreased ≈40% and ≈54%, respectively, compared with values at the start of the experiment. After an additional 2 days at 20 °C, the mesocarp tissue of the respective treatments had softened 42% and 70%.
