Peer-assisted learning (PAL) involves a student peer providing some form of support to a student mentee, usually participating at an earlier point in the same programme of study. PAL has been shown to have benefits for on-campus students. However, differences in on-campus and online programme delivery make it difficult to generalise these benefits to fully online distance learners (ODL). Of concern to providers of these types of programmes in higher education, are reports of increased student isolation, reduced motivation and early drop-out from their studies. Thus, providing PAL through an online environment may be one way to reduce these concerns. A systematic review of the published literature was performed to identify evidence of the potential benefits of formalised peer-assisted learning for students enrolled on a fully online, distance learning programme in higher education. A recognised methodology was used to search for relevant literature, and to synthesise results. Of the initial 2,225 individual studies identified from the search, only four met the full inclusion criteria for this review. The results of the four studies were inconclusive; differences between types of academic programmes, the design of the peer-support and the way in which they had been examined and reported were found. As a result, there was little more than a suggestion that in higher education, formal online peer-support might benefit fully online distance learners in some way.

The COVID-19 (2019 novel coronavirus) pandemic has had a significant economic, social, emotional, and public health impact in the United States. A disturbing trend is that Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) are disproportionately contracting coronavirus, as well as dying from COVID-19. Objective/Methods The pandemic has the potential to entrench and magnify existing health disparities and families marginalized across multiple demographic intersections such as race/ethnicity, class, immigration status, are especially vulnerable. These inequities have been further underscored by the recent murders of Black Americans by police and a resulting spotlight on racial injustice in the United States. Results Efforts to lessen the spread of the virus, have resulted in changes in pediatric primary and subspecialty service delivery which may affect access for BIPOC communities. BIPOC trainees including those with debt or caregiving responsibilities may be faced with new barriers resulting in delays in completion of their training. Further, clinical, community-based, and translational research has been disrupted by heightened safety precautions and social distancing which may affect BIPOC representation in research downstream. Conclusion In our roles as clinicians, supervisors, trainees, and researchers in primary and subspecialty care as well as in academia, pediatric psychologists have an ethical responsibility to address the disproportionate burden of this pandemic on vulnerable communities and to allocate our time and resources to ensuring health equity now and in the aftermath of COVID-19. Background: Prescribed statin therapy has contributed to a dramatic reduction in primary and secondary coronary heart disease (CHD). In the UK, simvastatin is currently available without prescription; however, the US FDA rejected an application for nonprescription lovastatin in 2005., Objective and Methods: We used population impact measures for three hypothetical levels of CHD risk to estimate the number of CHD events that would be prevented in the US over 5 years under three scenarios: (i) prescription-only regulations; (ii) approval of over-the-counter (OTC) statins; and (iii) implementation of lifestyle interventions., Results: For people at very low risk of CHD, 429,299 CHD events could be prevented by the availability of OTC statins and 560,243 CHD events could be prevented among this group by implementing lifestyle interventions. For those at moderate risk of CHD, 244,388 CHD events could be prevented by OTC statins compared with 318 866 by lifestyle interventions. For people at high risk of CHD, prescription statins could prevent 374,897 CHD events over the next 5 years., Conclusions: Provision of OTC statins to US adults at low or moderate risk of CHD would have a greater impact on CHD prevention than providing prescription statins for those at high risk of CHD. Provision of OTC statins alongside lifestyle interventions among those at low or moderate risk of CHD could substantially reduce the number of CHD events in the population.
