The article examines the organizational and functional features of huiguan, a native-place organization in Chinese society, and their migration to San Francisco, California in the mid-19th century. Topics discusses include their role in mutual aid and self-protection and in the sojourning experience of immigrants within China and overseas, comparison between the San Francisco and China's huiguan and the exit permit system.
