The article evaluates biocoal as a solution to the many difficulties posed by crop waste as a power-generation fuel. Biocoal is a fuel produced from biomass whose chemical and physical properties are altered so it behaves like coal. European utility RWE and clean energy technology company Topell plan to build the world's first biocoal plant in the Netherlands. In the U.S., the Energy and Environmental Research Center in North Dakota is conducting extensive research in crop-waste biocoal.
