The article offers information on the expanded role which college and university registrars play in students' grading system. It states that registrars, through their access to student information and their expertness in handling, managing, as well as presenting of data, play an essential role in helping to disentangle the meaning of grades. It also underscores that changes in the grading system in the United States have been evident since the 1960s. Moreover, grading systems serve many purposes, none of which is more apparent than communicating the achievement status of students to students themselves, their parents and others.
