Accurately detecting emotional expression in women with primary breast cancer participating in support groups may be important for therapists and researchers. In 2 small studies (N = 20 and N = 16), the authors examined whether video coding, human text coding, and automated text analysis provided consistent estimates of the level of emotional expression. In Study 1, the authors compared coding from videotapes and text transcripts of face-to-face groups. In Study 2, the authors examined transcripts of online synchronous groups. The authors found that human text coding significantly overestimated Positive Affect and underestimated Defensive/Hostile Affect compared with video coding. They found correlations were low for Positive Affect but moderate for negative affect between Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC) and video coding. The implications of utilizing text-only detection of emotion are discussed. (Contains 1 figure and 5 tables.)

BACKGROUND: Oncology nurses are exposed to stressors that may contribute to compassion fatigue (CF), leading to high rates of turnover, potential financial implications for organizations, and concerns for patient safety and employee well-being. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among CF, compassion satisfaction (CS), and turnover intention in a sample of 93 inpatient oncology nurses at a 90-bed urban cancer center. METHODS: Data were collected using paper surveys. CS, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout were measured using the Professional Quality of Life--Version 5 scale, and turnover intention was determined using the Turnover Intention Scale--6. FINDINGS: Burnout and CS were found to be significantly predictive of turnover intention. Strategies to reduce CF individually and organizationally may improve patient and employee well-being. The purpose of this study was to assess the performance characteristics of commercially available US foundry consumables for use in three-dimensional sand printers. The silica sands selected were 57 grain fineness number (GFN) and 70 GFN. These sands were a high-purity round grain silica and had low trace contaminates, to reduce any possible influence from contaminates. The furan resin system was selected since it is the most widely utilized resin system for 3D printed sand in the USA. The furan resin system was from a domestic US foundry supplier. The printed samples were traditional tensile specimen and rectangle samples for the determination of density. The samples were examined for the following properties: tensile strength, loss on ignition, density, scratch hardness, and permeability. The results of this investigation confirmed that the tested domestic resin system and silica sands matched the original equipment manufacturer performance properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Insurance can provide a way to plan for and finance the risk of needing paid long-term-care (LTC) services. Effective use of insurance can play a crucial role in mitigating risk for individuals, which in turn can facilitate economic growth on a larger scale. But the total number of private LTC insurance policies in effect in the United States remains small. The language wars have driven decision-making and educational options for D/deaf and hard of hearing children for over a century, yet we still have not made sufficient progress in closing the linguistic and educational gaps between D/deaf and hard of hearing children and their hearing peers. Perhaps it is time to abandon the bifurcated approach that has driven our field since the infamous Milan Conference of 1880. This commentary explores how a "Radical Middle" approach can frame the way we prepare teachers of the deaf, how we conduct and disseminate research, how we support families, and how the D/deaf and hearing communities can work together in positive and proactive ways. There is strength in unity. We are stronger as a field when we come together to support one another and find ways for collaboration and partnership across philosophical lines and communication preference. The article focuses on the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in occupational therapy practice to promote people's health and participation in life through engagement in occupations. The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) allows the use of CAM, in a responsible way, by occupational therapy assistants for health promotion. The five domains of CAM practice are mentioned including alternative medical systems, mind-body interventions and biologically based treatments.

Although most artists ignored the American Civil War (1861-1865) as overt subject matter, Winslow Homer (1836-1910) did not. His paintings of wartime garnered him professional attention. Why then in 1865 should he have painted Old Woman Gathering Faggots, a seemingly French subject rarely dealt with by Americans? First, Homer was ambitious and competitive and naturally experimental. Beyond that, Homer was active in the New York art scene during the war years, a friend of many fellow artists, including painter/critic Eugene Benson (1839-1908), and mindful of critical discussions of the time. These focused on merits of landscape vs. genre painting and the consequences of subject matter. Possibly, in reaction, Homer began to address broader and weightier matters in his paintings. This article examines the larger question of what Homer's unusual choice of iconography for Old Woman Gathering Faggots meant to him and to mid-nineteenth-century America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 1900, Winslow Homer responded to a request from the editor of the Boston periodical The Congregationalist, John C. Van Dyke, a well-known art critic, who wished to use Homer's 1895 oil painting Northeaster to illustrate an article on "A Century's Progress in Art." Refusing to send the painting to an engraver to be reproduced, Homer made a drawing after the original instead. His willingness to trouble himself with this request in the middle of winter at Pro ut's Neck, Maine, suggests Homer saw the charcoal sketch as serving strategic ends. Through publication in Van Dyke's piece in the January 1901 issue of The Congregationalist, Homer could indicate his own artistic "progress" and currency, and also promote the marketing of the original oil. States are required to provide a public health screening for all newly arrived refugees in the United States? In 1997, a comprehensive program was created to include both a physical examination and a mental health screening? This article provides a complete description of the mental health screening process, including two illustrative cases, and reports information about the refugees who participated in the program. Ten percent of screened refugees were offered mental health referrals; of those, 37% followed up. Refugees who presented for treatment reported a higher number of symptoms upon screening compared with those who were offered referrals but did not follow up. Psychiatric evaluation confirmed that those who screened positive and presented for treatment were experiencing a high level of suffering and qualified for mental health diagnoses. Context: The US FDA has issued an advisory warning of a possible link between antidepressant treatment for paediatric patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and an increased risk of suicidal behaviour. A large database of paid health insurance claims for adolescents with MDD provided the opportunity to examine this possible relationship.Objective: To examine the potential empirical link between antidepressant treatment and suicide attempts among adolescents aged 12-18 years using a community sample of managed care enrollees across the US.Design: A retrospective longitudinal cohort using paid insurance claims for all healthcare and prescription fills for adolescents who were newly diagnosed with MDD and had at least 6 months of follow-up data. A multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to test the hypothesis that antidepressant use increased the risk of suicide attempt, adjusting for propensity for allocation to each treatment group and for demographic and clinical characteristics.Setting: Managed care plans including both commercial and Medicaid plans in the east, midwest, south and western regions of the US from January 1997 to March 2003.Participants: All adolescent insurance members aged 12-18 years at first diagnosis of MDD.Main Outcome Measures: Suicide attempts as indicated by medical utilisation with International Classification of Diseases (9th edition) [ICD-9] or 10th edition (ICD-10) codes in any healthcare setting or by any covered provider.Results: 24 119 adolescents met inclusion criteria (63% female). Crude suicide attempt rates ranged from 0.0-2.3% by index treatment group. Treatment with SSRIs (hazard ratio) [HR] = 1.59; CI 0.89, 2.82), other antidepressants (HR = 1.03; CI 0.43, 2.44), or multiple antidepressants (HR = 1.43; CI 0.70, 2.89) after index MDD diagnosis resulted in no statistically increased risk of suicide attempt. Treatment with antidepressant medication for at least 180 days (6 months) reduced the likelihood of suicide attempt compared with antidepressant treatment for <55 days (8 weeks) [HR = 0.34; CI 0.21, 0.55]. Other variables that were independently associated with greater risk of suicide attempts included female gender, severity of illness indicators, younger age at time of MDD diagnosis, and living in the midwest or west.Conclusions: Antidepressant medication use had no statistically significant effect on the likelihood of suicide attempt in a large cohort of adolescents across the US after propensity adjustment for treatment allocation and controlling for other factors. The graduate accounting program at North Texas State University (NTSU) is the first in the nation approved for a Federal Tax Clinic by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Accounting students enrolled in the NTSU Federal Tax Clinic have permission of the National Office of the IRS to represent taxpayers at audit and appeals levels. The program at North Texas State is indicative of the IRS' changing policy towards clinical tax practice. Previously confined to selected law schools, clinical programs in tax are now possible for accounting departments offering a graduate specialization in taxation. Since such offerings are on the upswing [Broden and Lubell, 1979], the procedures followed by North Texas State University in its Tax Clinic should be of immediate interest to faculty of other accounting departments.
