Background: Drug use disorders (DUDs) have emerged as one of the most significant public health crises, exerting a substantial influence on both community health and socio-economic progress. The United States (US) also suffers a heavy burden, it is necessary to figure out the situation from multiple perspectives and take effective measures to deal with it. Therefore, using the data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) 2021, we evaluated this topic. Methods: Annual data on DUDs-related burden were collected from the GBD study 2021. We calculated the indicator of estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) to evaluate the changing trend of burden. The Bayesian model for age-period-cohort was introduced to forecast the burden. Results: In 2021, the number and age-standardized rate of prevalence were particularly prominent, with 12,146.95 thousand and 3821.43 per 100,000, respectively. Higher burden was also observed in males, 15–45 years old populations, and opioid use disorders subtype. From 1990 to 2021, the DUDs-related burden increased in the US and all states, especially in West Virginia; and the national death-related burden with the highest increase (EAPC = 7.96). Other significant inverse associations were seen between EAPC, age-standardized rates, and socio-demographic index (SDI). Moreover, in the next 14 years, the projected DUDs burden remains exigent. Conclusions: The burden of DUDs in the US is heavy and has been enlarging. This study proposes that greater attention should be paid to the strategies in males, the younger population, opioid use disorders, and low-SDI states implemented by decision-makers to achieve goals such as reducing burden. In this article, we describe the exploration of the content and quality of annual goals included in the Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) of students with disabilities in one rural U.S. school district. We utilized content analysis to understand the district's service delivery model comprehensively. Findings revealed disparities between inclusive placements and special education service delivery, suggesting that, despite high rates of inclusive placements noted on IEPs, most services occurred outside general education classrooms, especially for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). We evaluated the quality and rigor of 546 annual goals using a rubric adapted from Kurth et al. Only 37.7% of goals were rated as rigorous, highlighting a need for clearer, more specific, and applicable goals. Notably, communication goals for students with IDD were largely absent, raising concerns about support for meaningful participation in general education settings. In addition, special factors related to communication and assistive technology were not consistently addressed in IEPs. We discuss implications for improving educational experiences for students who qualify for special education services under IDD in rural schools and highlight the value of further research and actions in this area. Background: The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) has long recognized and championed increasing diversity within the surgical workplace. SAGES initiated the Fundamentals of Leadership Development (FLD) Curriculum to address these needs and to provide surgeon leaders with the necessary tools and skills to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in surgical practice. In 2019, the American College of Surgeons issued a request for anti-racism initiatives which lead to the partnering of the two societies. The primary goal of FLD was to create the first surgeon-focused leadership curriculum dedicated to DEI. The rationale/development of this curriculum and its evaluation/feedback methods are detailed in this White Paper. Methods: The FLD curriculum was developed by a multidisciplinary task force that included surgeons, education experts, and diversity consultants. The curriculum development followed the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (ADDIE) instructional design model and utilized a problem-based learning approach. Competencies were identified, and specific learning objectives and assessments were developed. The implementation of the curriculum was designed to be completed in short intervals (virtual and in-person). Post-course surveys used the Kirkpatrick's model to evaluate the curriculum and provide valuable feedback. Results: The curriculum consisted of interactive online modules, an online discussion forum, and small group interactive sessions focused in three key areas: (1) increasing pipeline of underrepresented individuals in surgical leadership, (2) healthcare equity, and (3) conflict negotiation. By focusing on positive action items and utilizing a problem-solving approach, the curriculum aimed to provide a framework for surgical leaders to make meaningful changes in their institutions and organizations. Conclusion: The FLD curriculum is a novel leadership curriculum that provided surgeon leaders with the knowledge and tools to improve diversity in three areas: pipeline improvement, healthcare equity, and conflict negotiation. Objective: This proof-of-concept study was conducted to establish the feasibility of compiling Federal Interagency Traumatic Brain Injury Research (FITBIR) data pertaining to depression and suicide risk, with the secondary goal of improving understanding regarding these outcomes. FITBIR is a national repository of participant-level traumatic brain injury (TBI) data designed to address methodological limitations (e.g., small sample size, heterogeneity of injuries). Method: FITBIR studies with TBI severity and measures related to depression and suicidal ideation were identified. Data were harmonized across relevant studies and grouped to identify "probable depression" and suicidal ideation, resulting in a large, combined sample. Rates of probable depression and suicidal ideation were described across the available studies, considering the influence of demographic and/or injury-related factors on outcomes. Results: Cross-sectional studies meeting criteria included four studies with depression outcomes and two with suicidal ideation outcomes. Two studies reported data appropriate for comparative analyses on depression. Combined results suggested that approximately 71% of participants were categorized as having probable depression. Participants with a history of mild TBI had 2.54 greater odds of probable depression (95% confidence interval [1.93, 3.34]) than those without a history of TBI. Conclusions: Methods, harmonization code, and meta-databases related to TBI, probable depression, and suicidal ideation are now publicly available on the FITBIR website. Even with limited data, harmonization of FITBIR studies can serve as the basis for ongoing TBI and mental health research. Analyses will be more robust in the future as more studies with relevant outcome data are added to the FITBIR database. Impact and Implications: This study demonstrates the feasibility of harmonizing participant-level data from Federal Interagency Traumatic Brain Injury Research (FITBIR) into a single meta-database. Participants with mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) had greater odds of meeting criteria for probable depression than those without TBI. This article outlines a stakeholder-created research agenda to guide future early intervention research for autistic children. We collaborated with 10 autism service providers, 10 parents of individuals with autism, and 10 autistic people across a total of 18 small group and 2 inter-group meetings occurring over 2 years. Together, we synthesized results from (1) these stakeholder workshops and (2) a survey completed by 237 autistic adults, autism providers, caregivers, and autism researchers in the United States. The finalized research agenda includes (1) Guiding Principles, (2) Research Priorities, and (3) Systems Implications. The full version of the early intervention autism research agenda is available in Supplemental Material. In this article, we summarize the main points of the research agenda and discuss unique themes highlighted by stakeholders in considering early autism intervention research. Finally, we highlight the need to include stakeholders in decision-making and consultant positions throughout the research process to align future work most directly and optimally with the goals and needs of the autism community. We have gathered guidance directly from our stakeholders and experiences with Project Stakeholders Engaging in Early Intervention Research (STEER) into a researcher workbook which we hope may facilitate these efforts. This workbook is available in Supplemental Material. In this article, we outline a stakeholder-driven research agenda to guide future early intervention research for children with autism. Our research team collaborated with autism service providers, parents of individuals with autism, and autistic people to create this research agenda by (1) conducting workshops with community members and (2) distributing a survey to a larger number of community members around the country. Pragmatic prospection is the ability to think deeply about the future in order to identify and to work productively toward goals. It involves imagining desirable future outcomes, setting sensible goals, making plans, and flexibly executing those plans. We conducted an exploratory survey of full-time working U.S. adults (N = 1541), measuring individual differences in pragmatic prospection along with life- and job-related outcomes. All data from the present survey are publicly available. Pragmatic prospection correlated positively with positive outcomes (e.g. life satisfaction, work productivity), correlated negatively with negative outcomes (e.g. anxiety, depression), and tracked with other adaptive personality traits associated with achievement and psychological adjustment (e.g. high conscientiousness, low neuroticism). These results point to pragmatic prospection as an important component of flourishing, both in the workplace and in daily life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Characterize experiences with cancer and perceptions of the preventable cancer burden attributable to diet among firefighters. A cross-sectional survey was distributed to assess cancer history and perceptions of cancer. US. US-based firefighters. History of cancer, perceptions of cancer, and perceptions of diet as a means to prevent cancer. Descriptive statistics and use of the Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy v1 (BCTTv1) to evaluate qualitative responses. A total of 471 firefighters participated. Nearly half (48.4%) voiced they strongly agreed that they were at risk for cancer, whereas 44.6% agreed that changing diet could decrease cancer risk. The most common BCTTv1 codes focused on types of education, including "Instruction on how to perform the behavior" (45.1%, n = 189), followed by those centered on behavior execution (eg, "Action planning" [24.8%, n = 104]). Qualitatively, many were concerned about misinformation. Firefighters acknowledge the role of diet in cancer risk and have a desire for knowledge and behavioral support (eg, goal setting) that includes an emphasis on evidence and tackling misinformation. Background: Many parents of children with advanced cancer report curative goals and continue intensive therapies that can compound symptoms and suffering. Factors that influence parents to choose palliation as the primary treatment goal are not well understood. The objective of this study was to examine experiences impacting parents' report of palliative goals adjusted for time. The authors hypothesized that awareness of poor prognosis, recall of oncologists' prognostic disclosure, intensive treatments, and burdensome symptoms and suffering would influence palliative goal‐setting. Methods: The authors collected prospective, longitudinal surveys from parents of children with relapsed/refractory neuroblastoma at nine pediatric cancer centers across the United States, beginning at relapse and continuing every 3 months for 18 months or until death. Hypothesized covariates were examined for possible associations with parental report of palliative goals. Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate factors associated with parents' report of palliative goals at different time points. Results: A total of 96 parents completed surveys. Parents were more likely to report a primary goal of palliation when they recalled communication about prognosis by their child's oncologist (odds ratio [OR], 52.48; p =.010). Treatment intensity and previous ineffective therapeutic regimens were not associated with parents' report of palliative goals adjusted for time. A parent who reported new suffering for their child was less likely to report palliative goals (OR, 0.13; p =.008). Conclusions: Parents of children with poor prognosis cancer may not report palliative goals spontaneously in the setting of treatment‐related suffering. Prognostic communication, however, does influence palliative goal‐setting. Evidence‐based interventions are needed to encourage timely, person‐centered prognostic disclosure in the setting of advanced pediatric cancer. Problem: One in four American adults have a disability, which makes people with disabilities the largest minority group in the United States (U.S.). Chronic diseases are prevalent within this population, which faces myriad barriers that limit access to healthcare and create significant health care disparities. Yet, disability awareness programs are limited in U.S. medical schools and graduates report a sense of unpreparedness to care for this population. Intervention: Come Roll with Me (CRWM) was implemented as an interprofessional, preclinical experience to provide medical and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students an opportunity to engage with wheelchair users and one another. Students rotated through four stations with a licensed physical therapist and wheelchair user facilitator. Stations included (1) manual wheelchair self-propulsion, (2) accessible parking, (3) transfers, and (4) open dialog on barriers to healthcare led by the wheelchair user. Context: This study sought to assess the impact of CRWM on students' understanding of the barriers and health disparities faced by individuals with disabilities. Assessment was conducted using course evaluations, thematic analysis of student reflection essays and a focus group with the wheelchair user facilitators to determine if CRWM met pre-implementation program goals and objectives, including the Interprofessional Educational Collaborative (IPEC) core competencies. Impact: Student reflections from both disciplines indicated that learners were able to identify a variety of barriers faced by people with disabilities and prioritize methods to mitigate these factors. Approximately 91% of medical students agreed or strongly agreed that CRWM was effective in their learning on course evaluations. Wheelchair user facilitators noted three important outcomes of CRWM: educating, teaming, and impact on students. Lesson Learned: Come Roll with Me is a robust educational activity, as evidenced by the program meeting all goals and objectives as well as (IPEC) core competencies. It provides students a unique opportunity to learn about disability from another profession and wheelchair users. BACKGROUND: The American Board of Surgery has endorsed competency-based education as vital to the assessment of surgical training. From 2018 to 2020, a national pilot study was conducted at 28 general surgery programs to evaluate feasibility of implementing entrustable professional activities (EPAs) for 5 common general surgical conditions. ACGME core competency Milestones were also rated for each resident by program clinical competency committees. This study aimed to evaluate the validity of general surgery EPAs compared with Milestones. STUDY DESIGN: Prospectively collected, de-identified EPA Pilot Study data were analyzed. EPAs studied were EPA-1 (gallbladder), EPA-2 (inguinal hernia), EPA-3 (right lower quadrant pain), EPA-4 (trauma), and EPA-5 (consult). Variables abstracted included levels of EPA entrustment (1 to 5) and corresponding ACGME Milestone subcompetency ratings (1 to 5) for the same study cycle. Spearman's correlations were used to evaluate the relationship between summative EPA scores and corresponding Milestone ratings. RESULTS: A total of 493 unique residents received a summative entrustment decision. EPA summative entrustment scores had moderate-to-strong positive correlation with mapped Milestone subcompetencies, with median rho value of 0.703. Among operation-focused EPAs, median rho values were similar between EPA-1 (0.688) and EPA-2 (0.661), but higher for EPA-3 (0.833). EPA-4 showed a strong positive correlation with diagnosis and communication competencies (0.724), whereas EPA-5, mapped to the most Milestone subcompetencies, had the lowest median rho value (0.455). CONCLUSIONS: Moderate-to-strong positive correlation was noted between EPAs and patient care, medical knowledge, and communication Milestones. These findings support the validity of EPAs in general surgery and suggest that EPA assessments can be used to inform Milestone ratings by clinical competency committees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Among the varied roles and responsibilities of school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are the planning and delivery of effective vocabulary intervention for students with language disorders. Despite the abundant literature regarding effective vocabulary intervention, practice patterns indicate that the research has not yet translated to practice. The purpose of this study was to examine SLPs' beliefs and expectations regarding vocabulary instruction and the content of Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals to better inform continuing education and research programs to generate lasting effects on SLP practices. Method: We queried a national sample of school-based SLPs via an online survey regarding their perspectives on robust vocabulary instruction, vocabulary intervention practices, and IEP goal development targeting vocabulary skills for school-age children with language disorders. Results: There was consistency across the sample for SLPs' beliefs about the importance and impact of robust vocabulary instruction. However, they reflected varied expectations about the vocabulary intervention they provide. Qualitative analysis of IEP goals for vocabulary reveals the range and frequency of strategies and intervention targets as an artifact of implementation of robust vocabulary instruction. Conclusions: School-based SLPs believe that vocabulary is important and have a strong understanding of the impact robust vocabulary instruction can have on reading and writing outcomes. Adolescents go through a critical process of identity formation. This time in their life can be confusing and having a mentor to provide support and guidance has proven to be helpful and may increase self-esteem, self-efficacy, problem-solving and coping skills in youth. In this qualitative narrative study, at-promise youth from historically oppressed communities (ages 12 to 15) who participated in a 12-week therapeutic youth mentoring program, were interviewed utilizing a creative method called photo-elicitation. Photo-elicitation and semi-structured questions facilitated the narrative interview process allowing the youth to share experiences surrounding identity formation through photographs. Significant findings are presented in narrative form utilizing participant quotes to capture the emotion, language, and perspective of the participants' perceptions of self and identity. Implications for mental health professionals working with adolescents during a time of self-exploration and identity formation, and recommendations for future research are discussed. Objective: Many young adults who are unemployed and not in school need support achieving employment goals. Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is an evidence-based employment practice for adults with serious mental illness, but its applicability to young adults with mental health conditions has not been well-researched. The present study prospectively assessed IPS effectiveness in a national sample of young adults enrolled in routine practice settings in the U.S. public mental health system. Method: Nine community agencies in five states participated in a 1-year follow-up study of young adults (aged 16−24) enrolled in IPS services. The study examined three outcomes: retention in services, employment, and education. State fidelity reviewers examined IPS fidelity using a new fidelity scale, the IPS-Y. Results: In a sample of 111 participants, the mean age was 19.2, 72 (64.9%) had never worked, and 76 (68.5%) had a diagnosis of depressive and/or anxiety disorder. Participants averaged 8 months of enrollment before terminating from IPS services. During follow-up, 51 (45.9%) participants obtained a competitive job (N = 50) or paid internship (N = 1); 14 (12.6%) achieved a new education outcome. Conclusions and Implications for Practice: IPS has promising outcomes for helping young adults with mental health conditions achieve positive employment outcomes, but its effectiveness in helping young adults achieve education goals has not been demonstrated. IPS should be offered to young adults with employment goals. Targeted funding for supported education and training for IPS specialists in delivering educational supports may be necessary to ensure optimal education outcomes in IPS. Impact and Implications: This is one of the first U.S. studies to examine the effectiveness of IPS for young adults with common mental disorders, such as depressive and anxiety disorders. Federal, state, and local administrators, service providers, parents, and young adults recognize the need for effective employment services for unemployed young adults with mental health conditions. Interdisciplinary collaboration fuels research innovation and funders are increasingly offering long-term grants prioritising partnerships. However, a gap remains regarding the effective development, evaluatation, and sustainment of research partnerships; particularly those supporting marginalised populations like sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY). There is a concomitant need to expand research internationally to cross-culturally conceptualise SGMY's experiences, which information and communication technologies (ICTs) may facilitate. The International Partnership for Queer Youth Resilience (INQYR) is a research consortium comprising over 40 academic and community representatives investigating and addressing issues faced by SGMY in Canada, the United Kingdom (UK), United States of America (USA), and Mexico from an interdisciplinary perspective by: (a) conducting and disseminating interventions and exploratory research on SGMY's ICT use, and (b) training cohorts of SGMY scholars and practitioners. This article details INQYR's rationale and formation, including its objectives and organisational framework. Facilitators and barriers are discussed through reflection on INQYR's first operational phase from 2018–2021, considering collaboration with diverse stakeholders and settings; shared goals; language and technology barriers; personal and workload barriers; infrastructure; and power and historical tensions. Implications for other research partnerships and concrete tools such as author guidelines for large-scale research partnership formation, operation, and evaluation are discussed. BACKGROUND: Under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (WIOA), vocational rehabilitation (VR) agencies are required to evaluate their students' need for pre-employment transition services and use this information to inform their goals, priorities and strategies. OBJECTIVE: This manuscript presents the development and field testing of the Transition Self-Assessment Tool (TSAT), a web-based instrument designed to support VR agencies' evaluation and strategic planning initiatives by measuring the availability, accessibility, and coordination of school-based transition services. METHOD: Our methods describe the TSAT development procedures and the methods of conducting a TSAT field test. RESULTS: Findings suggest high schools offer a broad array of career-related services for their students. However, not all potentially eligible students with disabilities have access to those services and when these services are provided, they are frequently delivered without coordination with VR. Additionally, data show more services are available, accessed, and coordinated in high schools participating in a statewide transition program. CONCLUSION: Results from the TSAT field test suggest it is feasible to conduct a statewide needs assessment of school-based transition services using this instrument. Furthermore, the findings from the TSAT align with prior knowledge about school-based transition services, and can be used to inform a state's goals, priorities and strategies. Is courage more than just facing fear? We tested the hypothesis that perceived value of the goal, in addition to the perceived riskiness of the action, predicts the extent to which an action is rated as courageous. Participants (300 US undergraduates and 1,254 US residents recruited online) read about either Caitlyn Jenner's public gender transition or Kim Davis's refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Participants then rated how courageous, risky, and valuable the action was. They also completed a Moral Traditionalism scale. Results indicated that across both samples and both conditions, courage was significantly predicted by the value of the goal, with risk of the action a smaller but mostly significant predictor. Adding Moral Traditionalism as a predictor did not alter these patterns. Results of this study support the inclusion of goal value as an important component of accolade courage. Purpose: Wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) is a promising measure of middle-ear mechanics. In contrast to standard tympanometry, which is generally measured at a single stiffness-dominated low frequency, WAI detects mechanical effects on both the mass and stiffness properties of the middle ear across a wide range of frequencies, resulting in a more comprehensive assessment of middle-ear mechanics in healthy and pathological ears. Despite a plethora of research demonstrating the clinical utility of this measure, clinical adoption of WAI is still limited. This work explores audiologists' use and perceptions of WAI, with the goal of identifying the barriers to its clinical adoption. Method: A survey on the perception and use of WAI by clinical audiologists in the United States was developed and administered using the Research Electronic Data Capture application. The survey was distributed broadly across the United States. Participation was voluntary and anonymous, and no compensation was provided. Results: Findings from 132 survey respondents across 32 states were included in the analyses. Overall, findings suggest the largest barriers to clinical adoption of WAI are lack of access to equipment that measures WAI and lack of training and/or confidence in measuring or interpreting WAI. Conclusions: Several barriers to clinical adoption of WAI were identified. However, findings also provide optimism in that audiologists utilizing WAI find it more useful than standard tympanometry, and most audiologists who do not currently use WAI are open to implementing the measure in their clinical practice. Informed by the goodness-of-fit model, goal theories, and literature on support gaps, this study examines the associations between congruence/discrepancies in parent-adolescent expectations of the adolescent's educational and career goals and adolescents' perceived overparenting. Data were collected through a survey of 122 parent-adolescent dyads from four high schools in the U.S. Results from second-order polynomial regression with response surface analysis indicated that parental high educational or career goal expectation alone was not necessarily related to adolescents' perception of overparenting. Rather, adolescents' perception of overparenting depended on the congruence/discrepancies in parents' and adolescents' expectations. Compared to parent-adolescent congruence in high or low expectations, either direction of expectation discrepancies—either parents' expectation exceeds adolescents' expectation, or adolescents' expectation exceeds their parents—was more likely to be associated with adolescents' perception of overparenting. Parenting intervention and educational programs should acknowledge that discrepancies in parents' and adolescents' educational and career goals could potentially contribute to parental overparenting. Fostering communication and negotiation of goal expectations between parents and adolescents may help reduce the practice of overparenting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little is known about differences in dosage or feedback that make teacher coaching effective in relation to teacher and student outcomes. This study builds upon previous research on the Collaborative Model for Promoting Competence and Success (COMPASS) to understand the impact of different types (face-to-face coaching vs. emailed feedback) and dosages (one vs. two or four) of performance feedback compared to receiving no feedback following an initial consultation during which intervention plans were developed. Findings suggest that teacher adherence and student goal-attainment outcomes depend on dosage, not type of coaching. Specifically, having two or four opportunities for performance feedback was significantly better than having none or only one opportunity. Ratings of teacher adherence and student goal attainment delivered via emailed feedback or face-to-face coaching were similar, which may have important implications for cost and efficiency. AIMThis study explored the experiences of prelicensure nursing students for whom English is an additional language when preparing for and taking course examinations. BACKGROUND English-as-an-additional-language students face challenges related to language comprehension on nursing examinations. Recognizing their unique obstacles may assist in designing equitable assessments and processes that improve outcomes. METHOD Responding to 14 semistructured, guided questions, 16 students discussed their experiences preparing for and taking nursing examinations. RESULTS Three primary themes related to student academic success emerged: psychological factors, perseverance, and factors affecting outcomes. Data revealed language as a factor that affected outcomes. Positive factors of note included self-confidence and diligence to succeed. CONCLUSION The results outline challenges faced by nursing students for whom English is an additional language and include strategies for promoting equity and academic success. Home-based family support programs provide early intervention to support families with young children. Home visiting models typically serve pregnant and parenting women with risk factors known to influence the caregiver-child relationship including history of trauma, low academic achievement, low income, limited support networks, maternal depression, and maternal substance use. Few, if any, home visiting models, however, were developed specifically to support families affected by maternal substance use. The Team for Infants Exposed to Substance use (TIES) Program is a home-based family support program exclusively serving families affected by maternal substance use. The model design and intensive services allow TIES participants to achieve significant positive outcomes in the program's six goal areas: maternal substance use, parenting skills, child mental and physical health, maternal mental and physical health, family income, and family housing. Goal scores are assessed jointly by participants and staff throughout the program using a validated scale. Program staff hypothesize that goal attainment in these areas may be influenced by the therapeutic relationship developed between home visitors and participants. This relationship is assessed using the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI), a validated assessment of therapeutic alliance administered to both participants and staff. An analysis of 127 program participants shows that when controlling for home visitor WAI scores in multilevel models (MLMs), goal attainment scores improved from intake to discharge across all goal areas except for housing stability. Physical activity (PA) improves quality of life and prevents chronic disease, yet many adults are inactive. Planning with health care providers in the form of exercise "prescriptions" may increase PA, but the role of individual psychosocial factors within exercise prescription programs is not well understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to describe the role of self-regulation strategies (e.g., goal setting, self-monitoring, reinforcements) in PA behavior change within the context of an exercise prescription program. Patients at a large, Federally Qualified Health Center with an on-site exercise facility (ie, "Wellness Center") referral were eligible to exercise with a personal fitness advisor. Self-reported PA and use of 15 self-regulation strategies were measured via survey at two time points and merged with electronic health records and attendance data. Patients (n = 151) were, on average, 50.3 ± 13.3 years and mostly female (76.8%). Almost one-third (30.5%) were Hispanic/Latino, 48.3% were non-Hispanic Black, and 20.5% were non-Hispanic white. Participants completed 10.7 ± 12.0 in-person exercise sessions with a fitness advisor. Between baseline and follow-up, the self-regulation strategies that had the largest change in frequency over time were keeping track of PA (p < 0.001), thinking about surroundings (p < 0.001), rewarding yourself for PA (p < 0.001), making PA more enjoyable (p < 0.001), setting goals (p < 0.001), and trying different kinds of PA (p < 0.001). Among exercise prescription program participants, the total self-regulation strategies score was significantly associated with physical activity at follow-up (p = 0.04). Leveraging self-regulatory skill-building activities within the context of exercise prescription programs in clinical settings may provide a personalized and multicomponent approach to PA promotion. Self-regulation strategy training for fitness advisors and/or health care providers has great potential for supporting long-term health behaviors like PA for managing chronic disease among underserved patients. Economic inequality has been shown to increase the social distance between people. However, we proposed that people's affiliation with others in more unequal societies depends on whether the relationship is instrumental to self‐enhancement goals. The results from four experiments (total N = 823) supported our proposition. We found that economic inequality increased people's focus on the instrumental aspects of relationships (Experiment 1). In the workplace, economic inequality prompted people to choose colleagues who were instrumental in achieving their performance goals as partners (Experiment 2). Moreover, the effect could be extended to situations where there is no clear benefit. Specifically, participants in high‐inequality contexts tended to approach social targets of instrumental value more than those in low‐inequality contexts, and the effect was driven by self‐enhancement goals (Experiments 3–4). Taken together, our findings suggest that economic inequality encourages instrumental orientation in social interactions, which changes how people view relationships and interact with others. Information researchers can further social justice and social equity to meet the needs of minority and underserved populations experiencing intersecting modes of cultural marginalization. Scholars of information and communication technologies for development (ICT4D) can find overlooked intersections with social justice in "community networking" research since the 1980s to overcome the digital divides between the haves and have‐nots. To frame social justice initiatives within a consolidated vision of ICT4D in the field of information, this article proposes an impact‐driven framework, expounded through five interrelated elements: why (motivations), with who (engaged constituencies), how (at external and internal levels to change traditional practices), and toward what (goal). It is explicated through select historical instances of "community networking" and digital divides, ICT4D, and social justice intersections. Significance of the elements is also demonstrated via this author's select information‐related social justice research conducted in the United States. The urgency for critical and reflective conversations is important owing to historically abstracted human information behavior theory development within information research outdated in multiple contextualized needs of contemporary times. Historically situating impact‐driven social justice research is important to further the relevance, existence, and growth of the information field as it strengthens its ties with ICT4D. As an increasing number of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander adults move to the continental United States, the development and implementation of resources that promote access to cultural foods and support food sovereignty on the continent is crucial to perpetuate cultural practice and connection to the ʻāina (land that feeds). Kalo (taro) is an important cultural food central to Native Hawaiian identity. Native Hawaiians connect their genealogy as far back to the cultivation of kalo and the creation of kalo itself. In this practice note, we describe the creation of a māla kalo (cultivated field for taro) in Oregon by the Kaʻaha Lāhui O ʻOlekona Hawaiian Civic Club. An ongoing project over the past 3 years, the creation of a māla kalo exceeded expectations. Not only did the māla allow the cultivation of kalo outside of Hawaii, the māla became a place for the community to unite toward common goals of connecting with the land, promoting mental health, and creating a sense of place in their diaspora. This project indicates that not only is the creation of māla kalo in Oregon feasible, it may also be an important opportunity for the growing number of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders adults living on the continent to improve health outcomes through connections with cultural foods and practices. Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant changes for family-- professional interactions. Many services shifted to telepractice, with new opportunities for parents and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to partner for service delivery. Parent-coached models of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention provide positive outcomes for children; however, SLPs have reported difficulty building strong partnerships with families. The shift to telepractice during the COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique context to examine factors influencing parent--SLP partnerships, particularly for parents with children who use aided AAC. Method: Twenty-five parents and 25 SLPs who engaged in services with children and youth from 3 to 21 years of age who used aided AAC during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in June 2020 participated. Semistructured interviews were conducted individually with parents and SLPs to understand perspectives on whether the change in service delivery facilitated or hindered family-oriented practice. Inductive qualitative analysis was used to analyze information about the factors impacting parent--SLP partnerships. Results: The parent--SLP partnership was influenced by setting and systemic determinants, and intrinsic determinants to the parent and the SLP that included their history and rapport, beliefs about partnering, and knowledge and skills. These determinants served as barriers or facilitators to their partnership. Conclusions: It is essential to consider the relationship, expectations, and knowledge and skills that SLPs and parents bring to the partnership, along with extrinsic structural factors that can impact this partnership. This study examines the goals of medical aid-in-dying (MAID) legislation introduced to the US Congress from 1994–2020 using a policy mapping analysis approach. Using congress.gov, we identified 98 bills, 23 bills were analyzed in this study. Most of the bills aimed to restrict the use of federal funds, to regulate the drugs commonly used for MAID, to prohibit the development of policies or practices supporting MAID, and to regulate practitioners' roles in MAID. In practice, these bills would limit patient access to MAID by restricting drugs, funds, health care services, legal assistance, policy, and research. These findings suggest there lacks congressional support for MAID, even though polls of the public are divided yet favorable. Policymakers who support MAID should consider affirmative policies that 1) prevent MAID policies from discriminating against vulnerable groups, 2) support funding to study the use of MAID, and 3) build avenues to allow all qualified people to access MAID in places where it is legal. Achievement goal theory links goal setting, motivation, and learning and describes three orientations: 'mastery' (seeking learning), 'performance' (seeking positive judgments), and 'performance-avoidance' (avoiding negative judgments). Mastery orientation is considered most adaptive. The authors investigated goal orientations of traditional block clerkship (TBC) and longitudinal integrated clerkship (LIC) students. This was an exploratory study conducted at one US medical school. Three hundred and twenty students completed an anonymous survey consisting of three tools with validation evidence: Patterns of Adaptive Learning Survey, Task-choice Goal Measures, and Questionnaire Goal Choice Items. The authors analyzed the data using regression analyses, Chi-square, and Wilcoxon's rank-sum tests. While all students rated mastery items most highly on the five-point Likert scale (mean 4.58/5.00), LIC students rated performance-orientation lower (β = −0.36, p =.04), chose personal mastery-orientation items more frequently (92% vs. 64.4%, p =.005), and perceived their learning environment as promoting less performance (β = −0.60, p =.002) and performance-avoidance (β = −0.78, p <.001) compared to TBC students. LIC and TBC students differed in their report of personal and clerkship goal orientations. Persons with lower limb loss (PwLLL) must self-manage their residual limb and their prosthesis to prevent self-management related complications (SMRC). However, the experience of PwLLL as it relates to self-management has not been reported. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the experience of self-management from the perspective of PwLLL, prosthetists, and physical therapists. This study had a qualitative design. Twenty-three participants were interviewed (PwLLL = 10, prosthetists = 7, physical therapists = 6). Interviews were transcribed and then coded using constant comparison. Four prominent themes were developed from the transcripts: (1) embodying the duty of self-management, (2) being a vigilant self-advocate, (3) setting goals collaboratively, and (4) making informed decisions. Each of the four themes were influenced by the health beliefs of the PwLLL, specifically motivation and presence of an internal locus of control. Clinicians should emphasize the therapeutic relationship, including open communication, collaborative goal setting, and promoting an internal locus of control in interactions with PwLLL, as it may play a role in decreasing SMRC and improving clinical outcomes. Self-management is a crucial aspect of preventing secondary complications associated with limb loss and prosthesis use. Well-integrated and productive communities are an asset to the development and advancement of our nation, and they have an important role to play in planning, learning, and enforcing safety to enhance national and border security. REACH (Resilience, Education, Action, Commitment, and Humanity) is a community-based project housed at The University of Texas at El Paso that aims to prevent targeted violence and domestic terrorism in El Paso County. We integrated three frameworks (i.e., Whole Community Preparedness, Socio-Ecological Model, and Global Citizen Education) to involve local residents in efforts to combat and mitigate targeted violence. REACH had two goals: to (1) prevent targeted violence and domestic terrorism through education, outreach, and community capacity-building aimed at identifying and deterring radicalization (primary prevention) and (2) reduce the short-term and long-term impact and prevent re-occurrence of targeted violence and domestic terrorism (secondary and tertiary prevention). Overall, our project served 8,934 participants directly and reached many more through our media cavmpaigns and outreach efforts during our 2 years of project implementation (2021–2023). Our project design may serve as an implementation model for other community-based projects on the U.S.-Mexico border and can be replicated with other target populations in the U.S. Insights and lessons learned from this project are discussed. Regulatory focus theory (RFT; Higgins, 1997) can be useful in studying working adults' goal-pursuing strategies for family and work success (e.g., marital adjustment and job satisfaction). We tested core hypotheses from RFT in a sample (N = 227) of married immigrants living and working in the United States. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the measurement model, and structural equation modeling was used to test study hypotheses. Results supported nearly all the RFT-derived hypotheses. Specifically, a promotion-focus orientation was more strongly associated with adults' life success than a prevention-focus orientation. A promotion-focused orientation was solely associated with family-to-work enrichment, whereas a prevention-focused orientation was solely associated with family-to-work conflict. Finally, as expected, family-to-work enrichment mediated the association of promotion-focused orientation with job satisfaction. The overall pattern of results suggests RFT has strong potential for understanding adults' success in their work and family lives, thereby providing a long-needed integrative theory for the multidisciplinary literature. The transition to college represents an exciting time for adolescents and young adults, but it could also pose a challenge as they adapt to a new environment. According to social cognitive career theory, self-efficacy, outcome expectations and goal progress are key predictors of positive adjustment. While these variables have received considerable empirical attention, they are understudied using longitudinal designs and in the social domain. To fill this gap, the present study adopted the RI-CLPM to examine temporal relations as within-person processes between social self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and goal progress among first-year college students (N = 831) who completed measures of study variables at three time points with a lag of four to five weeks. As hypothesized, results derived from the entire sample identified social self-efficacy as a temporal precursor of social outcome expectations and goal progress. A similar temporal pattern emerged for European American students and students of color. However, while a bidirectional model offered the best fit for male students, no cross-lagged paths were significant for their female counterparts. These findings highlight the importance of self-efficacy and outcome expectations and provide implications for promoting positive social adjustment among college students who have different gender and racial/ethnic backgrounds. Research on acceptability of non-abstinence goals has focused primarily on addiction counsellors and lacks representation of clinical social workers (SWs). We examined whether acceptability of non-abstinence varied as a function of a client's severity of substance use disorder (SUD) diagnosis (severe vs. moderate), finality of an outcome goal (intermediate vs. final), and type of substance (e.g. alcohol, cannabis) among clinical SWs in the US (United States). We surveyed a geographically representative sample of 309 SWs (Mean age = 48.9; Female = 76%; Mean years practicing = 14.6). For tobacco, alcohol and cannabis use, most SWs (51%–84%) rated non-abstinence as an acceptable goal regardless of finality of the outcome goal for clients with a moderate SUD; but smaller proportions rated non-abstinence acceptable for clients with severe SUD regardless of drug type or finality of the goal. Higher ratings of acceptability of non-abstinence were significantly associated with younger age and lower drug use stigma. Supporting clients who pursue non-abstinence is consistent with the values of the Social Work (SW) profession (e.g. self-determination, social justice, dignity/self-worth, importance/centrality of human relationships). Thus, SW education and training programmes should bolster understanding SUD recovery can take multiple pathways, should be self-directed and empowering, and may be defined in terms of improved health and wellness. Simple Summary: This study investigated HPV vaccination rates and associated factors among 265,554 patients aged 18–26 within a large healthcare system. Alarmingly, only 30% had completed the vaccine series, far below national averages and targets. Significant disparities were found, with males less likely to be vaccinated than females and Black Americans less likely to complete vaccination despite higher initiation rates. Many patients remained unvaccinated despite recent primary care visits, highlighting missed opportunities. Low uptake, particularly among males, and disparities emphasize the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve provider communication and community education around HPV risks and vaccine benefits to increase vaccination coverage in this population. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection, with over 40% prevalence in the US. Oropharyngeal cancers (OPCs) driven by high-risk HPV are increasing (up to 90%), with HPV vaccination being the only prevention available. The aim of this study was to investigate HPV vaccination among patients aged between 18 and 26 years old with at least one encounter at a large healthcare system and identify sociodemographic factors associated with vaccine initiation and completion. A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted between 2018 and 2021, including 265,554 patients identified from the Clinical Data Warehouse. HPV vaccination status by age, sex, race/ethnicity, insurance type, primary care (PCP) visits in the past year, alcohol, tobacco, illicit drug use, and age at vaccination was examined. Overall, 33.6% of females and 25.4% of males have completed the HPV vaccine. Black Americans were 35% more likely to initiate the vaccine than White Americans but were less likely to complete the entire course. Overall, HPV vaccination prevalence was far below the Health People 2030 goal of 80%, especially in young males. This low rate is troubling, since many patients had a PCP visit and remained unvaccinated, which serves as a missed opportunity for vaccination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sexual health education experienced by lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth varies widely in relevancy and representation. However, associations among sexual orientation, type of sex education, and exposure to affirming or disaffirming content have yet to be examined. Understanding these patterns can help to address gaps in LGB-sensitive sex education. Our goal in this study was to examine the prevalence and associations among abstinence-only until marriage (AOUM) and comprehensive sex education with LGB-affirming and -disaffirming content sought/received before age 18 (from 1999 to 2014) by sexual orientation (completely heterosexual with same-sex contact, completely heterosexual with no same-sex contact, mostly heterosexual, bisexual, gay/lesbian) in a sample of 12,876 US young adults from the Growing Up Today Study. Compared to completely heterosexual referents, LGB participants who received AOUM sex education were more likely to encounter LGB-disaffirming content, and this effect was largest among sexual minority participants. Conversely, exposure to comprehensive sex education was associated with receipt of LGB-affirming information. Overall, participants commonly reported receiving AOUM sex education, which may lead to deficits and potential harm to sexual minorities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our goal was to synthesize qualitative studies on HIV-related stigma as experienced by women living with HIV (WLWH) in the U.S. Qualitative metasynthesis techniques as developed by Sandelowski et al. (Res Nurs Health 30(1):99–111, 2007) were used to integrate and update findings on stigma in WLWH in the U.S. in 43 reports of qualitative studies conducted between 2004 and 2023 with 1118 participants. Developed themes explored a collective narrative of women first surviving the intersectionality of multiple sources of stigma, discovering non-linear pathways to transcend their stigma, and finally experiencing resilience through their transcendence of stigma. While this metasynthesis revealed similarities to an earlier metasynthesis in the ubiquity and persistence of stigma, they differ primarily in women's abilities to find agency in managing and opposing their stigma. This cognitive reframing of their stigma helped women to redefine stigma as ignorance and move towards a more positive assessment of the self. In doing so, they separated themselves from their stigma and the damaging effects of it. Findings from this metasynthesis may serve as a useful tool for the development of stigma reduction interventions specific to the needs and experiences of WLWH in the U.S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As adults, we intuitively understand how others' goals influence their information-seeking preferences. For example, you might recommend a dense book full of mechanistic details to someone trying to learn about a topic in-depth, but a more lighthearted book filled with surprising stories to someone seeking entertainment. Moreover, you might do this with confidence despite knowing few details about either book. Even though we offer or receive such recommendations frequently as adults, we know little about how the ability to evaluate and recommend information sources to others develops. Two studies examined how children (6–9 years, Eastern U.S. residents, n = 311) and adults (U.S. residents, n = 180) select mechanistic and entertaining information sources for others depending on their goals. Participants recommended books containing mechanistic information to agents who wanted to learn and entertaining information to agents who wanted to have fun. In contrast to adults who strongly favored entertaining books, children recommended both kinds of books equally to a generally curious agent. These results suggest children can infer others' information-seeking preferences based on their goals and recommend appropriate information sources to satisfy those goals despite possessing little topical knowledge themselves. Public Significance Statement: The current findings demonstrate young children can reason about and recommend information sources to others despite often possessing little relevant knowledge themselves. These findings also highlight a potential decline in interest in causal mechanisms into adulthood, which is of potential importance to educators wishing to increase interest and curiosity toward science, technology, engineering, and mathematics topics. The passage of the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) and subsequent creation of a residency process for nonresident survivors of human trafficking (the T Visa) are notable milestones in the United States' effort to address the problem of human trafficking and provide essential supports to trafficking survivors. However, current implementation of the statute's eligibility criteria for accessing entitlements and protections contributes to a potential for retraumatization, further traumatization, and other continued harms to survivors. The present article explores the structural and conceptual limitations of current T Visa policy and of recent annual policy guidance materials as important contributors to these policy implementation problems. Resulting problems are identified as an ambiguity of definitions and thresholds, a narrow conceptualization of victimhood, and the contradictory relationship between protection and prosecution. This article then utilizes a trauma-informed social policy framework to identify multisystemic action steps for social workers to address these limitations and improve the T Visa process for trafficking survivors. Colorectal cancer (CRC) disparities continue to persist in the four corners region (states of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado) of the United States. The Comprehensive Cancer Control (CCC) state plans provide a policy and practice snapshot on how a state identifies and addresses its cancer burden. This study critically examines the four state plans to identify gaps and opportunities for cancer prevention and control. Using a conventional content analysis approach, we reviewed the CCC plans for CRC screening-related information, culminating in a conceptual framework that highlights three themes. First, states reported their cancer burden using national data from American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the NCI's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results. Although these data informed specific goals and objectives, not all plans reported state-level data on CRC differences by specific social determinants of health and other characteristics. Second, it was not clear whether the interventions chosen to address state plan objectives were evidence-based and whether or not clearly described criteria were used for the selection of the interventions. Third, very limited information was provided in terms of state-specific contextual challenges and practical implementation of interventions. Study findings highlight opportunities to improve state-level cancer prevention and control efforts: first, by promoting the selection and adaptation of contextually relevant evidence-based interventions for this unique region; and second, through multidirectional engagement with communities, researchers, and policy and practice stakeholders. Targeted, goal-focused approaches to mentoring can improve behavioral and mental health outcomes than more recreational, non-specific approaches. However, a focus on goals needs to be balanced with openness to including mentees' preferences. This study builds on prior work by exploring the benefits of goal- and youth-focused approaches to mentoring relationships from the youth mentee's perspective, including their associations with relationship measures (closeness and tension) and mental health outcomes (i.e., conduct problems, emotional symptoms, and depressive symptoms). This study was a secondary analysis of data from 2165 youth participating in thirty nationally representative mentoring programs in the United States. On average, youth were 12.3-years-old (SD = 1.43, range = 9–16) and the majority were female (55%); 36.7% were Black/African American, 22.4% were White, and 23.5% were Latino/Hispanic. Path analyses revealed 1) youth- and goal-focused approaches were positively associated with closeness, 2) youth-focused approaches were negatively associated with tension, 3) goal-focused approaches were positively associated with tension. At follow-up, a stronger mentoring relationship (less tension and greater closeness) was related to positive youth outcomes. Latinx students experience stress at higher rates than European-American college-students in the U.S. and report the highest levels of anxiety among all other college-students, which can be a potential barrier to success. However, family members are identified as important sources of support by Latinx young-adults, and feeling support from family indicates a higher likelihood to remain enrolled in college. Few studies have explored the role of siblings in this relationship. This study examined whether positive and negative relationship qualities (RQ) between Latinx siblings may interact with level of anxiety, predicting academic stress (AS) and future aspirations (FA). Findings indicated that younger siblings with high anxiety and high negative RQ experienced higher levels of AS, while older siblings with low or mean-level anxiety and high negative RQ experienced high AS. Younger siblings with low anxiety, and high negative RQ with older siblings experienced low FA. The findings provide evidence that sibling relationship quality in Latinx students moderates the associations with anxiety, academic stress, and future aspirations, and that the presence of negative relationship qualities carried particular implications for future aspirations and academic stress. Understanding the influence of Latinx sibling RQ on mental health and AS can offer insight into the role of sibling relationships in the context of health, academic retention, and success in Latinx young people. In 2022, the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) established a taskforce to develop a survey to understand the current state of medical writer apprentice programs and the desire for a standard framework to help guide the development of such programs. The survey was targeted to contributors who were actively responsible for leading and/or training and developing a medical writing team and was administered by using SurveyMonkey. A total of 78 responses were received, with the largest percentage of respondents primarily working in pharmaceutical/biotech/medical device companies (44%), followed by contract research organizations (CROs)/medical writing companies (23%), and medical writing consultancies (10%). The survey revealed that less than half (42%) of survey respondents' companies currently have an established apprentice program, and that CROs (73%) and medical writing-specific consultancies (57%) were more likely to have apprentice programs than pharmaceutical/biotech/device companies (24%). The respondents also provided details about the goals, training styles, structures, and durations of existing programs. Importantly, regardless of whether respondents' companies already have an apprentice program, the majority of respondents felt it would be useful to have a standard framework for an apprentice program either to refine existing programs or to develop a new program. Therefore, the AMWA Executives Advisory Council established an Apprenticeship Framework Working Group to develop a standard yet flexible framework for companies to use as an adaptable resource as they develop their own apprentice programs. Adolescents growing up in low-income communities experience decreases in school engagement during their transition to middle school due to multiple stressors. Holding goals for their futures increases their resilience, yet research on the types of goals that are most beneficial and on parents' influence on the formation of future goals is limited. This study investigated relations between parental academic socialization, adolescent goals, and adolescent achievement. An ethnically diverse sample of 319 students reported on their intrinsic and extrinsic future goals, current mastery goals, and parents' academic socialization messages. Results showed that adolescents' intrinsic future goals and current mastery goals mediated relations between parents' messages about the importance of working hard to succeed in school and adolescents' grades. Parents influence adolescents' motivation and achievement by conveying messages about the value of learning, and adolescents with higher intrinsic future goals may view mastery and hard work as means of achieving those goals. Recent nationwide racial justice uprisings following ongoing police violence against Black communities juxtaposed with the COVID-19 pandemic have increased the urgency for a reckoning around the ineffectiveness and harm caused by the carceral apparatus. It is well documented that the correctional system was founded upon and continues the legacy of slavery and white supremacy. Research has shown that incarceration directly contributes to many negative health outcomes, including increased risk and spread of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections, especially among people who inject drugs. This high burden of HCV disproportionately impacts low-income communities of color, who not only report higher rates of substance use due to pervasive discrimination but are also over-incarcerated as a result of structural racism and the War on Drugs. The COVID-19 pandemic further underscores that correctional facilities are fundamentally structured to promote health inequities. Minoritized communities who are overrepresented in corrections continue to be put at increased risk of COVID-19 in overcrowded facilities, are isolated from social support and medical care, and have been ignored in vaccination strategies. In this perspective, we argue that HCV interventions within the carceral apparatus will remain largely ineffective due to the negative health impacts of incarceration. Instead, we propose adopting abolitionist principles for HCV elimination—divesting from the carceral apparatus to prioritize community-based efforts on promoting HCV screening, treatment, and prevention. In doing so, the nation will have not only the capacity to meaningfully eliminate HCV but also the potential to improve overall societal outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To assess the impact of community‐level characteristics on the role of magnet designation in relation to hospital value‐based purchasing quality scores, as health disparities associated with geographical location could confound hospitals' ability to meet outcome metrics. Design: This cross‐sectional study was carried out between October 2021 and March 2022 using data from 2016 to 2021. Methods: Propensity score analysis was used to match hospital and community‐level characteristics, implementing nearest neighbour matching to adjust for pre‐treatment differences between magnet and non‐magnet hospitals to account for multi‐level differences. Secondary data were obtained from all operational acute‐care facilities in the United States that participated in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' hospital value‐based purchasing (HVBP) program. Dependent variables were the four value‐based purchasing domains that comprise the Total Performance Score (TPS; Clinical Care, Person and Community Engagement, Safety, and Efficiency and Cost Reduction). Results: Magnet hospitals had increased odds for better scores in the HVBP domains of Clinical Care and Person and Community Engagement, and decreased odds for having better Safety. However, no statistically significant difference was found for the Efficiency domain or the TPS. Conclusion: Measuring performance equitably across organizations of various sizes serving diverse communities remains a key factor in ensuring distributive justice. Analysing the TPS components can identify complex influences of community‐level characteristics not evident at the composite level. More research is needed where community and nurse‐level factors may indirectly affect patient safety. Impact This study's findings on the role of community contexts can inform policymakers designing value‐based care programs and healthcare management administrators deliberating on magnet certification investments across diverse community settings. Exposure to stress during the prenatal period is often associated with adverse maternal and neonatal health outcomes and is increasing in prevalence in the United States. Health care providers play a crucial role in addressing and mitigating this stress, but there is a lack of consensus regarding effective interventions. This review evaluates the effectiveness of prenatal provider-based interventions that reduce stress for pregnant people, especially those who are disproportionately affected by stress. A search of relevant English-language literature was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Embase, and PyscInfo. Inclusion criteria were 1) the target population was pregnant people, 2) the intervention was delivered within the U.S. health care system, and 3) the study intervention had the goal of reducing stress (stress-reducing intervention). A total of 3,562 records were identified in the search and 23 were included in analysis. The four identified categories for provider-led stress-reducing prenatal interventions included in the review are 1) skills-building, 2) mindfulness, 3) behavioral therapy, and 4) group support. Findings suggest an increased overall likelihood of mood and maternal stress improvement among pregnant people who complete provider-based stress-reducing interventions, especially group-based therapies that integrate resource allocation, skills-building, mindfulness, and/or behavioral therapy into an intersectional program. However, the efficacy of each type of intervention varies by category and type of maternal stress targeted. Although few studies demonstrated a significant reduction in stress for pregnant people, this review highlights the critical need for increased research and attention to stress-reducing interventions in the prenatal period, especially as it pertains to minoritized populations.
