Background: The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors, but the relationship with blood pressure (BP) remains unclear. Objectives: To assess the association between HCV infection status and BP in US adults. Methods: Data for the study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2012. The association of HCV infection status (including HCV infection, current HCV infection, and past HCV infection) with hypertension, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were explored using logistic or linear regression analyses respectively. Results: A total of 25,850 participants (age=18 years) were enrolled in the current study, including 14,162 participants with hypertension. After adjusting for all covariates, HCV infection/current HCV infection was not associated with hypertension and SBP compared to participants with non-HCV infection (OR: 1.34,95% CI 0.96-1.87/1.31 95% CI 0.91,1.91, β: -0.92, 95% CI -2.7-0.86/-0.35 95% CI -2.51,1.81, respectively). HCV infection/current HCV infection was only associated with elevated DBP (β: 4.1,95% CI 2.57-5.63/4.24,95% CI 2.27-6.21). However, there was no correlation with past HCV infection in participants with hypertension, SBP, and DBP compared to those with non-HCV infection (OR: 1.23,95% CI 0.59-2.54; β: -3.79, 95% CI -7.67-0.08 and 2.28 95% CI -0.36-4.92, respectively). Conclusion: In a representative sample of US adults, it was found that both HCV infection and current HCV infection were independently linked to higher DBP. In this paper, we present findings from four separate studies using different data sources and methods to examine Chinese attitudes toward the United States amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The empirical results consistently indicate a marked and significant decline in Chinese attitudes toward the US between late 2019 and the end of 2022. Using a quasi-experimental design and granular survey data that exploit daily variations in public opinion, we offer additional evidence that the decline in Chinese attitudes toward the United States followed a distinct pattern not true for Chinese attitudes toward other countries. Specifically, the rise in Chinese unfavorability toward the United States closely corresponded to the heightened Chinese attention to the pandemic's progression in the United States. These results collectively suggest a causal effect of COVID-19, shedding light on how public health crises, international relations, and media jointly shape the increasing enmity between the two great powers. Androgen receptor (AR) signaling is crucial for driving prostate cancer (PCa), the most diagnosed and the second leading cause of death in male patients with cancer in the United States. Androgen deprivation therapy is initially effective in most instances of AR-positive advanced or metastatic PCa. However, patients inevitably develop lethal castration-resistant PCa (CRPC), which is also resistant to the next-generation AR signaling inhibitors. Most CRPCs maintain AR expression, and blocking AR signaling remains a main therapeutic approach. GATA2 is a pioneer transcription factor emerging as a key therapeutic target for PCa because it promotes AR expression and activation. While directly inhibiting GATA2 transcriptional activity remains challenging, enhancing GATA2 degradation is a plausible therapeutic strategy. How GATA2 protein stability is regulated in PCa remains unknown. Here, we show that constitutive photomorphogenesis protein 1 (COP1), an E3 ubiquitin ligase, drives GATA2 ubiquitination at K419/K424 for degradation. GATA2 lacks a conserved [D/E](x)xxVP[D/E] degron but uses alternate BR1/BR2 motifs to bind COP1. By promoting GATA2 degradation, COP1 inhibits AR expression and activation and represses PCa cell and xenograft growth and castration resistance. Accordingly, GATA2 overexpression or COP1 mutations that disrupt COP1-GATA2 binding block COP1 tumor-suppressing activities. We conclude that GATA2 is a major COP1 substrate in PCa and that COP1 promotion of GATA2 degradation is a direct mechanism for regulating AR expression and activation, PCa growth, and castration resistance. With the severity of the COVID-19 outbreak, we characterize the nature of the growth trajectories of counties in the United States using a novel combination of spectral clustering and the correlation matrix. As the United States and the rest of the world are still suffering from the effects of the virus, the importance of assigning growth membership to counties and understanding the determinants of the growth is increasingly evident. For the two communities (faster versus slower growth trajectories) we cluster the counties into, the average between-group correlation is 88.4% whereas the average within-group correlations are 95.0% and 93.8%. The average growth rate for one group is 0.1589 and 0.1704 for the other, further suggesting that our methodology captures meaningful differences between the nature of the growth across various counties. Subsequently, we select the demographic features that are most statistically significant in distinguishing the communities: number of grocery stores, number of bars, Asian population, White population, median household income, number of people with the bachelor's degrees, and population density. Lastly, we effectively predict the future growth of a given county with a long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network using three social distancing scores. The best-performing model achieves a median out-of-sample R2 of 0.6251 for a four-day ahead prediction and we find that the number of communities and social distancing features play an important role in producing a more accurate forecasting. This comprehensive study captures the nature of the counties' growth in cases at a very micro-level using growth communities, demographic factors, and social distancing performance to help government agencies utilize known information to make appropriate decisions regarding which potential counties to target resources and funding to. for this article, including a standardized description of the materials available for reproducing the work, are available as an online supplement. The study of cognitive processes underlying Internet users’ fast impression formation is important to understand how people behave in an information-overloaded environment. Here we study how Internet users form fast website impression by investigating which evaluative dimension, i.e., usefulness and enjoyment, is automatically activated when people are required to rapidly evaluate website logos. To capture the transient processes in website impression formation, we have applied dense-array (128 and 256 channels) electroencephalography (EEG) to conduct experiments in two cultures (USA and Taiwan). The results of the EEG analysis showed that usefulness and enjoyment evaluations were consistently performed quickly (450–800 ms) in both cultural groups. More importantly, the results showed that enjoyment evaluation could be automatically performed. No clear evidence was found that usefulness evaluation was performed when usefulness evaluation goal was irrelevant. The finding suggests that people can form rapid website impression, and enjoyment is a critical component in the impression formation process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explored the differences in young consumers' cognitive responses to visual ads across two cultures. In an experiment, 120 college students from the USA and 120 college students from China were exposed to different types of visual ads, and subsequently participants were instructed to recall objects from the ads, and to list thoughts regarding the product/brand meanings. It was found that compared with Chinese participants, participants from the USA recalled more salient objects and generated more product/brand thoughts elicited by salient objects from the ads. Moreover, Chinese participants were more likely to assign a social role to a person recalled from the ads than their American counterparts. These findings suggested that young Americans attended more to salient objects in the ads, and therefore are more analytic than their Chinese participants. Purpose To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of bortezomib in combination with doxorubicin in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma, and to correlate pharmacodynamic markers of proteasome inhibition with response and survival. Experimental Design This phase II, open-label, multicenter study examined the efficacy of bortezomib (1.3 mg/m IV on d1, 4, 8, 11) and doxorubicin (15 mg/m IV on d1, 8) in 21-day cycles. The primary endpoint was objective response rate. Results Best responses in 38 treated patients were 1 partial response (2.6 %), 10 (26.3 %) stable disease, and 17 (44.7 %) progressive disease; 10 patients were unevaluable. Median PFS was 2.2 months. Median OS was 6.1 months. The most common grade 3 to 4 toxicities were hypertension, glucose intolerance, ascites, ALT elevation, hyperglycemia and thrombosis/embolism. Worse PFS was seen in patients with elevated IL-6, IL-8, MIP-1α and EMSA for NF-κB at the start of treatment. Worse OS was seen in patients with elevated IL-8 and VEGF at the start of treatment. Patients had improved OS if a change in the natural log of serum MIP-1α/CCL3 was seen after treatment. RANTES/CCL5 levels decreased significantly with treatment. Conclusions The combination of doxorubicin and bortezomib was well-tolerated in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, but the primary endpoint was not met. Exploratory analyses of markers of proteasome inhibition suggest a possible prognostic and predictive role and should be explored further in tumor types for which bortezomib is efficacious. Worldwide losses due to the copyright infringement of intellectual property such as PC software, music recordings, and motion pictures continue at epidemic proportions in emerging countries. This article develops a research model for analyzing individual ethical decision making that is influenced simultaneously by two chief forces: regulative sanction and self sanction. In particular, we report on the differences between 241 U.S. and 277 China college students' self-reported copyright infringement behaviors and attitudes. The analysis shows that the China subjects exhibit less concern about being prosecuted and penalized, but are equally responsive to social sanctions as U.S. subjects, strongly suggesting that stricter enforcement of copyright law in China will reduce copyright violations. However, the results show that self-regulatory efficacy is the primary determinant of copyright adherence for the U.S. subjects. For the China subjects, while self-regulatory efficacy is shown to significantly predict copyright infringement behaviors, it exists at lower levels and plays a lesser role in ethical decision making when compared to the U.S. subjects. Overall, the results indicate that normative and cultural-cognitive changes in China that go beyond regulative enforcement may be required if significant reductions in copyright infringement are to be expected. Objective: The present study aims to explore the association between ideal diet behaviours recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) and hypertension in the United States (US) adults using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2014., Methods: Whole grains, fruits and vegetables, fish, sodium and sugar-sweetened beverages at an ideal level were defined as the AHA's recommendation. Associations between number of ideal diet behaviours and hypertension were assessed through multivariate logistic regression models., Results: A total of 4462 US adult participants (2110 men and 2352 women) were included in the analysis, of whom 1516 (34.0%) were diagnosed with hypertension. The multivariate adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for hypertension in the groups with one, two and at least three ideal diet behaviours were 0.88 (0.71-1.10), 0.89 (0.70-1.12) and 0.67 (0.49-0.91), when the group with 0 ideal diet behaviour was used as the reference. Results also showed that women with three or more ideal diet behaviours had 43% (95% CI: 10-64%) lower odds of hypertension., Conclusion: The number of diet behaviours at the ideal level recommended by the AHA was inversely associated with hypertension in US adults.

Background: We aim to compare the prognosis between patients with stage IIA and stage IIIA colon cancer., Methods: We analysed patients with stage IIA or stage IIIA colon cancer based on data from the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Survival data were generated as Kaplan-Meier curves and were compared by log-rank tests. A multivariate Cox proportional hazards model was used to analyze the risk factors., Results: In total, 43 379 patients (38 784 stage IIA and 4595 stage IIIA) were included from the SEER database. A Kaplan-Meier analysis showed no significant difference between patients with stage IIA and IIIA colon cancer (P = 0.547). In the subgroup of patients with number of lymph nodes harvested (LNH) ≥12, a multivariate analysis showed that compared with stage IIA patients, stage IIIA patients were more likely to have a poorer cancer-specific survival (CSS) (hazard ratio (HR) 1.252, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.095-1.431, P = 0.001). In the subgroup of patients with LNH <12, a multivariate analysis showed that compared with stage IIA patients, stage IIIA patients were more likely to have a better CSS (HR 0.820, 95% CI 0.731-0.919, P = 0.001)., Conclusions: Patients with stage IIA colon cancer had a CSS comparable with that of patients with stage IIIA disease. When adequate lymph nodes were retrieved (LNH ≥12), stage IIA patients had a greater CSS than stage IIIA patients. Background: Two antigenically distinct influenza B lineages have cocirculated since 2001, yet trivalent influenza vaccines (TIVs) contain 1 influenza B antigen, meaning lineage mismatch with the vaccine is frequent. We assessed a candidate inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (QIV) containing both B lineages vs TIV in healthy children aged 3-17 years., Methods: Children were randomized 1:1:1 to receive QIV or 1 of 2 TIVs (either B/Victoria or B/Yamagata lineage; N = 2738). Hemagglutination-inhibition assays were performed 28 days after 1 or 2 doses in primed and unprimed children, respectively. Immunological noninferiority of QIV vs TIV against shared strains, and superiority against alternate-lineage B strains was based on geometric mean titers (GMTs) and seroconversion rates. Reactogenicity and safety were also assessed (Clinicaltrials.gov NCT01196988)., Results: Noninferiority against shared strains and superiority against alternate-lineage B strains was demonstrated for QIV vs TIV. QIV was highly immunogenic; seroconversion rates were 91.4%, 72.3%, 70.0%, and 72.5% against A/H1N1, A/H3N2, B/Victoria, and B/Yamagata, respectively. Reactogenicity and safety of QIV was consistent with TIV., Conclusions: QIV vs TIV showed superior immunogenicity for the additional B strain without interfering with immune responses to shared strains. QIV may offer improved protection against influenza B in children compared with current trivalent vaccines.
