BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Diet quality has improved over time for US adults and youth aged $2 years. Trends over time and disparities in the diet quality of toddlers 12 through 23 months old have not been documented. Our objective was to investigate the direction and magnitude of toddler diet quality trends from 1999 to 2018 overall and by household socioeconomic status. METHODS: This serial cross-sectional analysis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data was performed with 2541 toddlers from 10 NHANES cycles from 1999 to 2018. Dietary intake was measured by NHANES study staff using proxy-reported 24-hour recalls. Healthy Eating Index-Toddlers-2020 total scores (0-100 points, higher scores indicate healthier diets) and component scores were calculated from the 24-hour dietary recalls using the population ratio method. Multivariable linear regression was used to evaluate the association between time in years (measured as the midpoint of each NHANES cycle) and diet quality. RESULTS: Toddler diet quality improved significantly from 1999 to 2018 (P < .001), from 63.7 points on average in 1999-2000 to 67.7 points in 2017-2018. A significant positive linear trend in total diet quality was observed for all socioeconomic status groups (P < .05). Several dietary component scores improved, as follows: Whole Fruits (P < .001), Whole Grains (P = .016), Fatty Acids (P = .002), Refined Grains (P = .009), and Added Sugars (P < .001). Scores did not significantly change for Total Fruit, Total Vegetables, Greens and Beans, Dairy, Total Protein Foods, Seafood and Plant Proteins, Sodium, or Saturated Fats. Background: The relationship between free fatty acids (FFAs) and the risk of mortality remains unclear. There is a scarcity of prospective studies examining the associations between specific FFAs, rather than total concentrations, of their effect on long-term health outcomes. Objective: To evaluate the correlation between different FFAs and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a large, diverse, nationally representative sample of adults in the US, and examine how different FFAs may mediate this association. Methods: This cohort study included unsaturated fatty acids (USFA) and saturated fatty acids (SFA) groups in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2014 and provided blood samples for FFAs levels. Multiple model calibration was performed using Cox regression analysis for known risk factors to explore the associations between FFAs and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Results: In the group of USFA, 3719 people were included, median follow-up, 6.7 years (5.8–7.8 years). In the SFA group, we included 3900 people with a median follow-up, 6.9 years (5.9-8 years). In the USFA group, myristoleic acid (14:1 n-5) (hazard ratio (HR) 1.02 [1.006–1.034]; P = 0.004), palmitoleic acid (16:1 n-7) (HR 1.001 [1.001–1.002]; P < 0.001), cis-vaccenic acid (18:1 n-7) (HR 1.006 [1.003–1.009]; P < 0.001), nervonic acid (24:1 n-9) (HR 1.007 [1.002–1.012]; P = 0.003), eicosatrienoic acid (20:3 n-9) (HR 1.027 [1.009–1.046]; P = 0.003), docosatetraenoic acid (22:4 n-6) (HR 1.024 [1.012–1.036]; P < 0.001), and docosapentaenoic acid (22:5 n-6) (HR 1.019 [1.006–1.032]; P = 0.005) were positively associated with the all-cause mortality, while docosahexaenoic acid (22:6 n-3) had a statistically lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR 0.998 [0.996–0.999]; P = 0.007). Among the SFA group, palmitic acid (16:0) demonstrated a higher risk of all-cause mortality (HR 1.00 [1.00–1.00]; P = 0.022), while tricosanoic acid (23:0) (HR 0.975 [0.959–0.991]; P = 0.002) and lignoceric acid (24:0) (HR 0.992 [0.984–0.999]; P = 0.036) were linked to a lower risk of all-cause mortality. Besides 23:0 and 24:0, the other FFAs mentioned above were linearly associated with the risks of all-cause mortality. Conclusions: In this nationally representative cohort of US adults, some different FFAs exhibited significant associations with risk of all-cause mortality. Achieving optimal concentrations of specific FFAs may lower this risk of all-cause mortality, but this benefit was not observed in regards to cardiovascular mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: A major limitation of osteochondral allografts (OCA) is the deterioration of cartilage health associated with cell death during prolonged storage. However, little is known about the mechanisms that contribute to chondrocyte death during storage. Purpose/Hypothesis: This study aimed to determine whether bioactive lipid metabolites accumulate in the storage media of OCA and whether they are associated with a loss of chondrocyte viability during prolonged storage. It was hypothesized that free fatty acids (FFAs) would accumulate over time in the storage media of OCA and adversely affect cartilage health during storage. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: A group of 21 (n = 6-8 OCA/treatment group) fresh human hemicondylar OCA tissues and media were analyzed after 7, 28, and 68 days of prolonged cold (4°C) storage. Targeted mass spectrometry analysis was used to quantify bioactive FFAs, as well as primary (lipid hydroperoxide [ROOH]) and secondary (malondialdehyde) lipid oxidation products. Chondrocyte viability was measured using a fluorescence-based live/dead assay and confocal microscopy. Results: The concentration of all targeted fatty acid metabolites in storage media was significantly increased with increased cold storage time (P <.05). ROOH was significantly higher on day 28 of cold storage. No difference in secondary ROOH products in storage media was observed. Chondrocyte viability significantly declined in both the en face and the vertical cross-sectional analysis with increased cold storage time and inversely correlated with fatty acid metabolites (P <.05). Conclusion: It is well established that elevated levels of certain FFAs and lipid oxidation products can alter cell function and cause cell death via lipotoxicity and other mechanisms. This work is the first to identify elevated levels of FFA metabolites and primary oxidation lipid products in the storage media from clinical OCA. The concentrations of FFA metabolites were measured at levels (>100 µM) known to induce cell death and were directly correlated with chondrocyte viability. Background: Dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative condition, while metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by a combination of metabolic abnormalities such as hypertension, high blood sugar, and obesity. There exists a connection and overlap between the two conditions in certain aspects, and both are influenced to varying degrees by the process of aging. This study presents an overview of the current research landscape regarding dementia and MetS through bibliometric analysis. Methods: A systematic search was conducted to retrieve relevant literature on dementia and MetS published between 1 January 2000, and 30 November 2023, from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Various bibliometric tools, including VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and the R software package “bibliometrix,” were utilized for analysis. Results: A total of 717 articles were identified, showing an upward trend in annual publications. Leading contributors included the United States, Italy, and China, with institutions such as the University of California System at the forefront. The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease emerged as the top publisher, while research published in Neurology garnered significant citations. Noteworthy authors encompassed Panza, Francesco; Frisardi, Vincenza; and Feldman, Eva L, with Kristine Yaffe being the most cited author (280 citations). Recent studies have focused on themes like “gut microbiota,” “neuroinflammation,” “fatty acids,” and “microglia.” Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis summarizes the foundational knowledge structure in the realm of dementia and MetS from 2000 to 2023. Prostate cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men in the United States. Although treatable when detected early, prostate cancer commonly transitions to an aggressive castration-resistant metastatic state. While taxane chemotherapeutics such as docetaxel are mainstay treatment options for prostate cancer, taxane resistance often develops. Fatty acid binding protein 5 (FABP5) is an intracellular lipid chaperone that is upregulated in advanced prostate cancer and is implicated as a key driver of its progression. The recent demonstration that FABP5 inhibitors produce synergistic inhibition of tumor growth when combined with taxane chemotherapeutics highlights the possibility that FABP5 may regulate other features of taxane function, including resistance. Employing taxane-resistant DU145-TXR cells and a combination of cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and cell cycle assays, our findings demonstrate that FABP5 knockdown sensitizes the cells to docetaxel. In contrast, docetaxel potency was unaffected by FABP5 knockdown in taxane-sensitive DU145 cells. Taxane-resistance in DU145-TXR cells stems from upregulation of the P-glycoprotein ATP binding cassette subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1). Expression analyses and functional assays confirmed that FABP5 knockdown in DU145-TXR cells markedly reduced ABCB1 expression and activity, respectively. Our study demonstrates a potential new function for FABP5 in regulating taxane sensitivity and the expression of a major P-glycoprotein efflux pump in prostate cancer cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Despite the popularity of dietary supplements, their effectiveness and safety in patients with diabetes remain controversial. Furthermore, evidence from clinical trials may not be generalizable to real-world settings. This study examined the association between dietary supplement use and mortality outcomes among patients with diabetes based on a nationally representative sample of US adults. Methods: This study analyzed data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999–2018. Supplement users referred to adults with diabetes who reported the use of any dietary supplements in the last 30 days, and with a cumulative duration of ≥ 90 days. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations between supplement use and all-cause mortality, and mortality from cardiovascular diseases (CVD), diabetes, and cancer. Subgroup analysis of different supplement classes (vitamins, minerals, botanicals, amino acids, fatty acids, probiotics and glucosamine) were also conducted. Results: We included 8,122 adults with diabetes (mean age: 59.4 years; 48.7% female), of whom 3,997 (54.0%) reported using supplements regularly. Vitamins (87.3%), minerals (75.3%) and botanicals (51.8%) were the most popular supplements. At a median follow-up of 6.9 years, 2447 all-cause deaths had occurred. Overall supplement use was not associated with risk of all-cause mortality among patients with diabetes (HR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.87 to 1.08, P = 0.56). Subgroup analyses suggested that amino acid use was associated with a lower all-cause mortality (HR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.46 to 0.96, P = 0.028), while the use of fatty acids (HR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.42 to 0.92, P = 0.018) and glucosamine (HR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.51 to 0.95, P = 0.022) supplements were significantly associated with lower CVD mortality. Conclusions: Our results derived from real-world data suggested that overall supplement use was not associated with any mortality benefit in patients with diabetes. However, there is preliminary evidence that suggests a protective effect of amino acid use on all-cause mortality, and a benefit of fatty acids and glucosamine supplement use on CVD mortality. Future large-scale longitudinal studies are needed to investigate the association between dietary supplement use and other intermediate diabetes-related outcomes, such as glucose control and reducing diabetes-related complications. Simple Summary: Research on nutritional requirements in combination with improving bee protection has recently increased because of the continuous global decline in the abundance and diversity of bees. The decline is currently attributed to several stressors, including climate change, diminishing forage resources, and pesticide use, among other factors. Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is a new crop that is grown over a wide geographic area in the United States, providing economic and nutritional benefits to humans. However, the contribution of hemp floral resources (pollen) to bee nutrition is not well understood. We investigated the chemical composition of pollen from four industrial hemp varieties (Canda, CFX-2, Henola, and Joey) and documented the abundance and diversity of bees on the crop using two sampling methods. Results showed differences in composition among the four hemp varieties. Overall, the Joey variety was the most preferred by bees, despite expressing lower protein, amino acid, and saturated and monosaturated fatty acid content. Based on our findings, we concluded that industrial hemp pollen provides some nutritional benefits to bees. However, it is important to understand that multiple sources of pollen are needed for sustained bee survival. Apart from its economic value, industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is a prolific pollen producer, serving as a food source for bees. However, little is known regarding the extent to which varietal differences in hemp pollen chemistry influences bee preference. Here, we report the chemical profile of pollen from four hemp varieties (Canda, CFX-2, Henola, and Joey) and bee abundance and diversity, using direct visual counts and pan traps. The number and type of bees on each variety was recorded and the chemical composition (proximate analysis and mineral, amino, and fatty acid profiles) of pollen from each hemp variety was determined. During the entire sampling period, three bee types (bumble bees, honey bees, and sweat bees) were recorded, with a combined total of 1826. Among these, sweat bees and bumble bees were the most prevalent and were highest on the Joey variety. The four varieties expressed protein content ranging from 6.05% to 6.89% and the highest in Henola. Seventeen amino acids were expressed in all varieties, with leucine recording the highest content ranging from 4.00 mg/g in Canda to 4.54 mg/g in Henola. In general, Henola expressed high protein, amino acid, and saturated and monosaturated fatty acid contents and recorded significantly fewer bees compared with Joey, which had a low content of these components and a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Our findings suggest that, while industrial hemp offers abundant and accessible pollen that would promote bee health and sustainability of their ecosystem services, the nutritional quality may not be adequate for bee growth and development as an exclusive pollen source. We aimed to examine the association between the quantity and quality of dietary fat in early pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk. In total, 1477 singleton pregnant women were included from Sichuan Provincial Hospital for Women and Children, Southwest China. Dietary information was collected by a 3-d 24-h dietary recall. GDM was diagnosed based on the results of a 75-g, 2-h oral glucose tolerance test at 24–28 gestational weeks. Log-binomial models were used to estimate relative risks (RR) and 95% CI. The results showed that total fat intake was positively associated with GDM risk (Q4 v. Q1: RR = 1·40; 95 % CI 1·11, 1·76; P trend = 0·001). This association was also observed for the intakes of animal fat and vegetable fat. After stratified by total fat intake (< 30 %E v. ≥ 30 %E), the higher animal fat intake was associated with higher GDM risk in the high-fat group, but the moderate animal fat intake was associated with reduced risk of GDM (T2 v. T1: RR = 0·65; 95 % CI 0·45, 0·96) in the normal-fat group. Vegetable fat intake was positively associated with GDM risk in the high-fat group but not in the normal-fat group. No association between fatty acids intakes and GDM risk was found. In conclusion, total fat, animal and vegetable fat intakes were positively associated with GDM risk, respectively. Whereas when total fat intake was not excessive, higher intakes of animal and vegetable fat were likely irrelevant with increased GDM risk, even the moderate animal fat intake could be linked to lower GDM risk. As geographical location can impact the gut microbiome, it is important to study region-specific microbiome signatures of various diseases. Therefore, we profiled the gut microbiome of breast cancer (BC) patients of the Midwestern region of the United States. The bacterial component of the gut microbiome was profiled utilizing 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing. Additionally, a gene pathway analysis was performed to assess the functional capabilities of the bacterial microbiome. Alpha diversity was not significantly different between BC and healthy controls (HC), however beta diversity revealed distinct clustering between the two groups at the species and genera level. Wilcoxon Rank Sum test revealed modulation of several gut bacteria in BC specifically reduced abundance of those linked with beneficial effects such as Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. Machine learning analysis confirmed the significance of several of the modulated bacteria found by the univariate analysis. The functional analysis showed a decreased abundance of SCFA (propionate) production in BC compared to HC. In conclusion, we observed gut dysbiosis in BC with the depletion of SCFA-producing gut bacteria suggesting their role in the pathobiology of breast cancer. 'Georgia‐SP/RKN' (Reg. no. CV‐151, PI 700991), is a high‐yielding, large‐seeded spanish market type peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cultivar with high total sound mature kernel percentage, high oleic to linoleic fatty acid ratio, high level of resistance to Tomato spotted wilt virus (Family Tospoviridae, genus Orthotospovirus), and full resistance to root‐knot nematode [Meloidogyne arenaria (Neal)]. Georgia‐SP/RKN was released in 2021 by the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station and was developed and tested as GA 082549R‐2 at the University of Georgia's Coastal Plains Experiment Station at the Tifton Campus, Tifton, GA. Georgia‐SP/RKN exhibits pod yields similar to 'Georgia‐04S' and 'Georgia‐17SP', and pod yields are consistently higher than other commercially available spanish cultivars in the southeastern United States. High grade quality and the added benefit of root‐knot nematode resistance could make this high‐oleic spanish market‐type cultivar a good fit for the confectionary market. The rise of antibacterial-resistant bacteria is a major problem in the United States of America and around the world. Millions of patients are infected with antimicrobial resistant bacteria each year. Novel antibacterial agents are needed to combat the growing and present crisis. Acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), the multi-subunit complex which catalyses the first committed step in fatty acid synthesis, is a validated target for antibacterial agents. However, there are at present, no commercially available antibiotics that target ACC. Ethyl 4-[[2-chloro-5-(phenylcarbamoyl)phenyl]sulfonylamino]benzoate (SABA1) is a compound that has been shown to have antibacterial properties against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. SABA1 inhibits biotin carboxylase (BC), the enzyme that catalyses the first half reaction of ACC. SABA1 inhibits BC via an atypical mechanism. It binds in the biotin binding site in the presence of ADP. SABA1 represents a potentially new class of antibiotics that can be used to combat the antibacterial resistance crisis. Fatty acids (FAs) have been implicated in the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), but the role of monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs) remains understudied. We investigated the associations of plasma phospholipid MUFAs in early to mid-pregnancy with cardiometabolic biomarkers and GDM risk. From the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Fetal Growth Studies-Singletons cohort (2009-2013), we identified 107 women with GDM according to Carpenter and Coustan criteria and 214 control participants without GDM matched (2:1) on age, race/ethnicity, and gestational week (GW) of blood collection. MUFAs were measured at 10-14, 15-26, 23-31, and 33-39 GWs by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. We found that the concentration of total 18:1 MUFAs was significantly lower among women with GDM than those without GDM at 15-26 GWs. Each SD increment in the level of total 18:1 MUFAs was associated with a 40% lower risk of GDM at 15-26 GWs. Moreover, each SD increment in vaccenic acid (18:1n-7) levels at 10-14 and 15-26 GWs were associated with a 36% and 45% lower risk of GDM, respectively. Our extensive assessments of MUFAs advance our understanding of the unique associations of FA composition with GDM risk, suggesting the potentially beneficial role of MUFAs in GDM pathophysiology. Background: Previous studies have mainly focused on the effects of individual fatty acids on depressive symptoms, while the combined effect of fatty acids on the risk of depressive symptoms has not yet been extensively reported. This study evaluate the associations between individual and multiple fatty acids with depressive symptoms in U.S. adults., Methods: Data sets were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018 cycles. Both males and females aged above 18 years with complete information about dietary fatty acids intake, depression symptoms, and covariates were included. Weighted linear regression models were conducted to evaluate the relationships between individual fatty acid intake and depressive symptoms, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were utilized to explore the corresponding dose-response relationships. Additionally, we implemented the weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and quantile g-computation (QGC) models to estimate the mixed effects of 19 fatty acids and identify the predominant types., Results: After multivariable adjustments, an increase of one unit in Linoleic acid (LA), Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA), Arachidonic acid (AA), Docosapentaenoic acid(DPA), Docosahexaenoic acid(DHA), was associated with a decrease in depressive scores by -0.021 (95 % CI: -0.039,-0.003, p = 0.021),-0.028 (95 % CI: -0.045,-0.011, p = 0.002),-0.026 (95 % CI: -0.044,-0.008, p = 0.005), -0.026 (95 % CI: -0.042,-0.009, p = 0.003), and - 0.022 (95 % CI: -0.041,-0.003, p = 0.022), respectively. However, a per unit increase in Hexanoic acid and Octanoic acid was associated with an increase in depressive scores of 0.020 (95 % CI: 0.002,0.038, p = 0.029) and 0.026 (95 % CI: 0.004,0.048, p = 0.020), respectively. Meanwhile, significant dose-response relationships were supported by the RCS models. As for the mixed effects, both WQS and QGC models demonstrated that the mixture of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was inversely related to depressive symptoms, and ALA and DPA were the most critical contributors. DHA was negatively correlated with depressive symptoms in WQS analysis, but positively correlated with depressive symptoms in QGC analysis., Limitations: The cross-sectional design limits our ability to establish causality, and 24-hour dietary recall can lead to potential inaccuracies reflecting participants' true eating habits., Conclusion: Our study suggests that the single effects of each PUFA were inversely associated with depressive symptoms, except for octadecatetraenoic acid. Moreover, higher combined intake of dietary PUFAs is inversely associated with depressive symptoms in U.S. adults. Among the mixed effects of PUFAs, ALA and DPA may play predominant roles. Background: Bempedoic acid exhibits promising potential in hyperlipidemia therapy and preventing cardiovascular events. However, investigations into its adverse drug reactions remain scant. This study seeks to utilize data mining techniques with the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database to assess adverse drug events (ADEs) linked to bempedoic acid., Methods: Based on the drug's market release timeline, we extracted data from the FAERS database covering the fourth quarter of 2020 through the fourth quarter of 2023 for disproportionality analysis., Results: This study gathered a total of 5,797,543 adverse event case reports, of which 735 were linked to bempedoic acid. These reports covered 19 System Organ Classes (SOCs) and 22 Preferred Terms (PTs). Predominantly, the musculoskeletal and nervous systems were implicated in these adverse events. By conducting PT-level screening, various signals for ADEs were detected, including myalgia (ROR 30.33, PRR 28.51, IC 4.83, EBGM 28.47), arthralgia (n = 34, ROR 6.34, PRR 6.09, IC 2.61, EBGM 6.09), tendon disorders (ROR 99.57, PRR 98.75, IC 6.62, EBGM 98.28), and dizziness (ROR 3.18, PRR 3.13, IC 1.65, EBGM 3.13). Particularly noteworthy was the hypertensive crisis (ROR 28.63, PRR 28.51, IC 4.83, EBGM 28.47), which exhibited a robust signal strength, an observation previously unreported in clinical studies and drug labeling., Conclusion: While our results are largely consistent with the drug's specifications, several new adverse reaction signals, such as hypertensive crisis, have not been previously documented. Metabolic impairments associated with type 2 diabetes, including insulin resistance and loss of glycaemic control, disproportionately impact the elderly. Lifestyle interventions, such as manipulation of dietary fat quality (i.e. fatty acid (FA) composition), have been shown to favourably modulate metabolic health. Yet, whether or not chronic consumption of beneficial FAs can protect against metabolic derangements and disease risk during ageing is not well defined. We sought to evaluate whether long-term dietary supplementation of fish-, dairy- or echium-derived FAs to the average FA profile in a U.S. American diet may offset metabolic impairments in males and females during ageing. One-month-old CD-1® mice were fed isoenergetic, high-fat (40 %) diets with the fat content composed of either 100 % control fat blend (CO) or 70 % CO with 30 % fish oil, dairy fat or echium oil for 13 months. Every 3 months, parameters of glucose homoeostasis were evaluated via glucose and insulin tolerance tests. Glucose tolerance improved in males consuming a diet supplemented with fish oil or echium oil as ageing progressed, but not in females. Yet, females were more metabolically protected than males regardless of age. Additionally, Spearman correlations were performed between indices of glucose homoeostasis and previously reported measurements of diet-derived FA content in tissues and colonic bacterial composition, which also revealed sex-specific associations. This study provides evidence that long-term dietary fat quality influences risk factors of metabolic diseases during ageing in a sex-dependent manner; thus, sex is a critical factor to be considered in future dietary strategies to mitigate type 2 diabetes risk. Purpose: The objective of this study is to determine the impact of exposure to obesity-related systemic factors on fatty acid synthase enzyme (FASN) expression in breast cancer cells. Methods: MCF-7 breast cancer cells were exposed to sera from patients having obesity or not having obesity and subjected to quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Subsequent MTT and colony-forming assays using both MCF-7 and T-47D cells exposed to sera and treated with or without FASN inhibitor, TVB-3166, were used. MCF-7 cells were then treated with insulin and the sterol regulatory element–binding protein (SREBP) processing inhibitor, betulin, prior to analysis of FASN expression by quantitative RT-qPCR and western blot. Insulin-induced SREBP-FASN promoter binding was analyzed by chromatin immunoprecipitation with an anti-SREBP antibody. Results: In response to sera exposure (body mass index [BMI] >30) there was an increase in FASN expression in breast cancer cells. Furthermore, treatment with the FASN inhibitor, TVB-3166, resulted in a decreased breast cancer cell survival and proliferation while increasing apoptosis upon sera exposure (BMI >30). Insulin-exposed MCF-7 cells exhibited an increased FASN messenger RNA and protein expression, which is abrogated upon SREBP inhibition. In addition, insulin exposure induced enhanced SREBP binding to the FASN promoter. Conclusions: Our results implicate FASN as a potential mediator of obesity-induced breast cancer aggression and a therapeutic target of patients with obesity-induced breast cancer. Introduction: We assessed the efficacy and safety of OPF-105, a novel all-in-one peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN) solution containing multivitamins by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2000 (FDA2000 recommendation). Methods: We conducted a phase III trial administering OPF-105 or BFL (combination of a commercially available PPN solution and fat emulsion) to patients after gastrointestinal (GI) tract surgery from postoperative day (POD) 1 up to POD14. Until POD7, nutrients were provided only with OPF-105 or BFL. After blood sampling on POD8, oral food intake was permitted. PPN was administered according to the amount of food intake. Results: Efficacy endpoints were assessed in 99 subjects (OPF group: 52; BFL group: 47). The levels of blood proteins and fatty acids in the two groups were similar on POD8. The transition of these mean levels was similar in both groups from POD1 or 2 to POD9 to 15. The mean preoperative blood vitamin levels were within reference intervals (RIs). On POD1 (before administration), the mean levels of most blood vitamins decreased compared to those of the preoperative levels. In the BFL group, the mean blood levels of vitamin B2, B6, pantothenic acid (PA), folic acid (FA), biotin, and C decreased below or near the lower limit of RIs on POD8, and the mean blood levels of vitamin B6 and C remained low from POD9 to 15. In the OPF group, the mean blood levels of vitamins, excluding vitamin K, were within RIs on POD8 and POD9 to 15. The mean levels of blood vitamin K increased over the upper limit of RIs on POD8 but within RIs from POD9 to 15. There was no obvious difference in the incidence of adverse events between the two groups, which is common after GI tract surgeries. Conclusion: Blood vitamin levels decreased when patients were administered PPN without vitamin supplementation during the first week after surgery. Objectives: Using comprehensive measures of biological risk, this study aims to investigate the relationship between intake of individual dietary components, overall diet quality, and biological dysregulation. Methods: We analyzed nationally representative data from 3734 older adults who participated in the Health and Retirement Study Venous Blood Study in 2016 and Health Care and Nutrition Survey in 2013. Results: Eleven out of 13 individual dietary components were associated with lower biological risk. Respondents with poor/suboptimal quality diet had higher biological risk than those with good quality diet. Discussion: Findings from this study emphasize the importance of healthy eating in improving health of older adults. Encouraging intake of fruits, greens and beans, whole grains, and fatty acids, while limiting consumption of sodium, added sugar, and saturated fat would improve overall diet quality and contribute to the prevention of chronic diseases and morbidity. To evaluate the association of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) with dysglycemia in older adults, NEFA levels were measured among participants in the Cardiovascular Health Study (United States; enrolled 1989–1993). Associations with insulin sensitivity and pancreatic β-cell function, and with incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), were examined. The sample comprised 2,144 participants (aged 77.9 (standard deviation, 4.5) years). Participant data from the Cardiovascular Health Study visit in 1996–1997 was used with prospective follow-up through 2010. Fasting and postload NEFA showed significant associations with lower insulin sensitivity and pancreatic β-cell function, individually and on concurrent adjustment. Over median follow-up of 9.7 years, 236 cases of DM occurred. Postload NEFA were associated with risk of DM (per standard deviation, hazard ratio = 1.18, 95% confidence interval: 1.08, 1.29), but fasting NEFA were not (hazard ratio = 1.12, 95% confidence interval: 0.97, 1.29). The association for postload NEFA persisted after adjustment for putative intermediates, and after adjustment for fasting NEFA. Sex and body mass index modified these associations, which were stronger for fasting NEFA with DM in men but were accentuated for postload NEFA in women and among leaner individuals. Fasting and postload NEFA were related to lower insulin sensitivity and pancreatic β-cell function, but only postload NEFA were associated with increased DM. Objectives: To analyze adverse events (AEs) related to sclerosants reported through the Federal Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). Methods: We queried the FAERS database for all cases associated with sclerosants. Reports were analyzed and stratified based on severity of cases and patient death. Results: A total of 1215 cases with 3124 reactions were identified among 4 sclerosants. "General disorder and administration site conditions" reaction group was prevalent in all sclerosants. For polidocanol, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism were the most common severe reactions while cardiac arrest was frequent in death cases. Anaphylaxis was common in fatalities of sodium tetradecyl sulfate. Ethanolamine oleate was associated with procedural errors, while morrhuate sodium resulted in few cases. Conclusion: Our analysis supports previous studies concerning common local symptoms, but also reveals serious and death associated reaction profiles specific to individual sclerosants. Practitioners should be knowledgeable on both non-lethal and fatal AEs for each sclerosant. The multitude of reports concerning serious reactions and deaths we report herein provide a cautionary reminder to venous practitioners and patients that sclerotherapy is not a trivial procedure. Background: Black Americans have the highest incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) of any racial/ethnic group in the United States. High intake of red and processed meats has been associated with an increased CRC risk in predominately White populations. However, 3 prior studies in Black populations, who have been reported to have high intakes of red and processed meats, have reported no associations. Data on a possible association between CRC risk and SFAs and MUFAs, the primary types of fat in red and processed meats, are inconclusive.Objectives: We prospectively assessed intakes of processed and unprocessed red meat, SFAs, and MUFAs in relation to CRC risk, utilizing data from the Black Women's Health Study (BWHS, 1995-2018).Methods: Dietary data were derived from validated FFQs completed in 1995 and 2001. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression.Results: Among 52,695 BWHS participants aged 21-69 y at baseline and followed for ≤22 y, 564 women developed incident CRC. Unprocessed red meat intake was associated with a 33% increased CRC risk per 100 g/d (HR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.03-1.71). Examination of CRC anatomic sites revealed that unprocessed red meat was associated with 2-times increased rectal cancer risk (HR: 2.22; 95% CI: 1.15-4.26). There was no evidence of an interaction with age (pinteraction = 0.4), but unprocessed red meat intake was only associated with a significant increased risk of late-onset CRC (≥50 y of age, HR: 1.41; 95% CI: 1.05-1.88). Processed red meat and total SFA and MUFA intakes were not associated with CRC risk.Conclusions: Unprocessed red meat intake was associated with an increased CRC risk in the present study, the first positive evidence that red meat plays a role in the etiology of CRC in Black women. Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between red blood cell (RBC) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels, and dietary PUFA and fish intake, with prevalent and incident age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a US cohort of postmenopausal women. Methods: This analysis included 1456 postmenopausal women from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Clinical Trials. RBC PUFAs were measured from fasting serum samples collected at WHI baseline. Dietary PUFAs and fish intake were assessed via food frequency questionnaires at baseline. There were 240 women who had prevalent AMD and 138 who self-reported AMD development over 9.5 years. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated for prevalent AMD by RBC PUFA levels, dietary PUFA intake, and frequency of fish consumption. Adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated for incident AMD. A p-for-trend was estimated for continuous measures of dietary PUFA and fish intake. Results: No significant association was found between prevalent or incident AMD and RBC docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) + eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), EPA, DHA, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA), or arachidonic acid (AA). A positive association was found between dietary intake of AA and odds of prevalent AMD (p-for-trend for continuous AA intake = 0.02) and between intake of LA/ALA and incident AMD (p-for-trend for continuous ratio of LA/ALA intake = 0.03). No statistically significant associations were found between AMD and dietary intake of PUFAs or fish. Conclusions: RBC PUFAs were not associated with AMD in this cohort. Fatty acids (FA) play an important role in health and heart disease risk. We evaluated relationships of plasma FA levels, especially omega-3 FA, with sex, age, and reported heart disease mortality rates by state in a very large clinical population. Plasma FA were measured by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry after lipid extraction in 1,169,621 fasting United States subjects grouped according to sex (56.2% female), age (<30, 30-<45, 45-<55, 55-<65, ≥65 years; median age 58.2 years), and state of residence. Plasma FA index values (median±interquartile range), expressed as a percent of total plasma FA, in all subjects were: saturated (14:0+16:0+18:0) 31.4±1.5%; monounsaturated (16:1n7- cis +18:1n9- cis) 21.3±2.2%; trans (16:1n7- trans +18:1n9- trans) 0.45±0.08%; omega-6 (18:2n6- cis +20:3n6+20:4n6) 42.5±3.0%; and omega-3 (20:5n3+22:6n3) 2.57±0.81%. The median eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n3) concentration was 22.1±9.7 μg/mL. Females had significantly (P <0.0001) higher omega-3 FA indices (+6.82%) than males. Subjects ≥65 years of age had a higher omega-3 FA index (+29.68%) and higher EPA levels (+57.05%) than subjects <30 years of age (P <0.00001). EPA concentrations and omega-3 FA indices were below overall median levels in most southern and midwestern states. State-reported heart disease mortality rates were inversely correlated with EPA levels (r =-0.504) and omega-3 FA indices (r =-0.570), and positively correlated with saturated FA indices (r =0.450), all P <0.01. In our large population, females, subjects ≥65 years, and those living in northeastern and western states had higher omega-3 fatty acid levels and lower saturated fatty acid levels than other subjects. Despite various health effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure, the association between PFAS exposure and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has not been investigated. We aimed to assess associations of PFAS exposure with AMD, using data from 1722 U.S. adults aged 40 years or more participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2008 with complete data on PFAS measurement, AMD diagnosis, and covariates. Serum concentrations of PFAS, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), were measured. An overall PFAS burden score was calculated using item response theory scoring. Individual PFAS concentration and overall PFAS burden score were categorized into low (reference), medium, and high groups. Diagnosis of AMD was based on retinal image examination. Any AMD was defined as the presence of early or late AMD. Survey-weighted logistic regression adjusted for potential confounders was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for presence of AMD according to PFAS exposure. Overall, 132 (6.5%) individuals were diagnosed as any AMD, including 115 (5.7%) individuals with early AMD. A significant dose-response association was observed between serum PFOS concentration and any AMD (p-trend = 0.03), with a significant OR of 1.99 (95% CI: 1.05, 3.79) for the high group compared to the reference. Overall PFAS burden showed a non-monotonic association with any AMD, with a significant OR of 2.18 (95% CI: 1.18, 4.04) for the medium. Inverted U-shaped associations were observed by restricted cubic spline analyses. Also, early AMD showed similar patterns in PFOS and overall PFAS burden and additionally an inverted U-shape association in PFNA. Nutrient composition data that accurately represent available beef products are critical to understanding beef's role in healthy dietary patterns. The quality of beef products has changed over the past several decades, and updated nutrient data are warranted as USDA Prime beef cuts become more available. In an effort to provide a complete nutrient profile for frequently purchased USDA Prime beef cuts, five USDA Prime cuts; strip loin steak, tenderloin steak, ribeye steak, top sirloin steak, and rib roast were collected from retail stores in six geographical locations over three collections for macro- and micronutrient analysis in both the raw and cooked state. The separable lean portion of all analyzed USDA Prime cuts qualified as a good or excellent source, providing 10-19% or at least 20% of the daily value, respectively, for protein, niacin, vitamin B12, selenium, phosphorus, and zinc per FDA labeling claim standards. There was not a significant difference in cholesterol content between any of the cuts, raw or cooked ( p ≥ 0.44 and 0.34, respectively). The percent lipid in raw, separable lean portions of the rib roast and strip loin steak was significantly greater than the lipid portion in tenderloin and top sirloin steaks ( p ≤ 0.01). Per USDA standards, the separable lean portions of tenderloin steak and top sirloin steak qualify as lean beef, containing less than 10 g total fat, less than 4.5 g saturated fat, and less than or equal to 95 mg cholesterol. The current study provides the most up-to-date nutrient analysis for USDA Prime beef cuts, helping consumers and health professionals better identify the role of high-quality beef cuts in healthy dietary patterns.

Objective: Obesity and dysmetabolism are major risk factors for atrial fibrillation (AF). Expansion of fat depots is associated with increased circulating total non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs), elevated levels of which are associated with incident AF. We undertook comprehensive serum measurement of individual NEFA to identify specific associations with new-onset AF late in life.Methods: The present study focused on participants with available serum and free of AF selected from the Cardiovascular Health Study, a community-based longitudinal investigation of older US adults. Thirty-five individual NEFAs were measured by gas chromatography. Cox regression was used to evaluate the association of individual NEFAs with incident AF.Results: The study sample included 1872 participants (age 77.7±4.4). During median follow-up of 11.3 years, 715 cases of incident AF occurred. After concurrent adjustment of all NEFAs and full adjustment for potential confounders, higher serum concentration of nervonic acid (24:1 n-9), a long-chain monounsaturated fatty acid, was associated with higher risk of AF (HR per SD: 1.18, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.29; p<0.001). Conversely, higher serum concentration of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) (18:3 n-6), a polyunsaturated n-6 fatty acid, was associated with lower risk of AF (HR per SD: 0.81, 95% CI 0.71 to 0.94; p=0.004). None of the remaining NEFAs was significantly associated with AF.Conclusions: Among older adults, serum levels of non-esterified nervonic acid were positively associated, while serum levels of non-esterified GLA were inversely associated, with incident AF. Background: Ghrelin may influence several alcohol‐related behaviors in animals and humans by modulating central and/or peripheral biological pathways. The aim of this exploratory analysis was to investigate associations between ghrelin administration and the human circulating metabolome during alcohol exposure in nontreatment seeking, heavy drinking individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Methods: We used serum samples from a randomized, crossover, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled human laboratory study with intravenous (IV) ghrelin or placebo infusion in two experiments. During each session, participants received a loading dose (3 µg/kg) followed by continuous infusion (16.9 ng/kg/min) of acyl ghrelin or placebo. The first experiment included an IV alcohol self‐administration (IV‐ASA) session and the second experiment included an IV alcohol clamp (IV‐AC) session, both with the counterbalanced infusion of ghrelin or placebo. Serum metabolite profiles were analyzed from repeated blood samples collected during each session. Results: In both experiments, ghrelin infusion was associated with an altered serum metabolite profile, including significantly increased levels of cortisol (IV‐ASA q‐value = 0.0003 and IV‐AC q < 0.0001), corticosterone (IV‐ASA q = 0.0202 and IV‐AC q < 0.0001), and glycochenodeoxycholic acid (IV‐ASA q = 0.0375 and IV‐AC q = 0.0013). In the IV‐ASA experiment, ghrelin infusion increased levels of cortisone (q = 0.0352) and fatty acids 18:1 (q = 0.0406) and 18:3 (q = 0.0320). Moreover, in the IV‐AC experiment, ghrelin infusion significantly increased levels of glycocholic acid (q < 0.0001) and phenylalanine (q = 0.0458). Conclusion: IV ghrelin infusion, combined with IV alcohol administration, was associated with increases in the circulating metabolite levels of corticosteroids and glycine‐conjugated bile acids, among other changes. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one contributor to death in the United States and worldwide. A risk factor for CVD is high serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations; however, LDL particles exist in a variety of sizes that may differentially affect the progression of CVD. The small, dense LDL particles, compared to the large, buoyant LDL subclass, are considered to be more atherogenic. It has been suggested that replacing saturated fatty acids with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids decreases the risk for CVD. However, certain studies are not in agreement with this recommendation, as saturated fatty acid intake did not increase the risk for CVD, cardiovascular events, and/or mortality. Furthermore, consumption of saturated fat has been demonstrated to increase large, buoyant LDL particles, which may explain, in part, for the differing outcomes regarding fat consumption on CVD risk. Therefore, the objective was to review intervention trials that explored the effects of fat consumption on LDL particle size in healthy individuals. Background: SMOFlipid is a mixed-lipid emulsion approved for adults in the United States as an alternative to soybean oil-based lipid (SO). There are limited data on the use of SMOFlipid in pediatrics and its effect on the fatty acid (FA) profile. Our objective was to characterize changes in FA profile, liver function, and growth in pediatric patients with intestinal failure (IF), following transition from SO or a fish-oil (FO) and SO combination to SMOFlipid.Methods: A retrospective case series was conducted on pediatric parenteral nutrition-dependent IF patients transitioned to SMOFlipid. Demographics, anthropometrics, labs, and achievement of nutrition goals were assessed. Linear mixed-effect models assessed effects on FA levels and clinical outcomes.Results: One hundred thirty-nine FA panels were collected from 20 patients. Median SMOFlipid dose at study completion was 2 g/kg/d (interquartile range, 1.6-2). During the 1.5 years after SMOFlipid initiation, ω-6 FA increased to physiologic levels, arachidonic acid increased from 298 to 461 nmol/mL (P < .001), and linoleic acid increased from 1172 to 1922 nmol/mL (P < .001). ω-3 FA remained within normal limits. Body mass index z-score and length z-score increased, though no significant changes were found. In addition, no significant changes were found in mead acid, hepatic function, triene-to-tetraene ratio, or triglycerides.Conclusion: In 20 pediatric IF patients, SMOFlipid allowed greater ω-6 FA provision while maintaining ω-3 FA, hepatic function, and patient growth. Background: Exposure to different concentration levels of fatty acids (FAs) may have an impact on depression. However, previous studies using individual FAs may not reflect the performance of mixtures of various FAs, and the associations of FA patterns with depression remain unclear., Methods: We conducted the cross-sectional analysis in 792 adults aged 18 and older with available serum FAs and depression screening data in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2012. The serum concentrations of thirty FAs were measured using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and their percentage compositions were subsequently calculated. Depression was defined as the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score ≥ 10. We employed principal component analysis to derive serum FA patterns. We examined the association between these patterns and depression in the overall population and various subgroups through survey-weighted logistic regression., Results: Four distinct patterns of serum FAs were identified: 'high eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); low docosatetraenoic acid (DTA) and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) n-6', 'high long-chain saturated FA and long chain FA', 'low median-chain saturated FA and myristoleic acid' and 'low capric acid and lauric acid; high gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and stearidonic acid (SDA)' pattern. Individuals in the high tertile of 'high EPA and DHA; low DTA and DPA n-6' pattern score had 0.46 (95% CI: 0.22, 0.93) lower odds of developing depression compared to individuals in the lowest tertile after adjusting for confounders such as age, sex, physical activity and total energy intake, etc. The odds ratio (OR) of depression was increased in the population with the highest tertile of 'low capric acid and lauric acid; high GLA and SDA' pattern (OR: 2.45, 95% CI: 1.24, 4.83). In subgroup analyses, we observed that the association between 'high EPA and DHA; low DTA and DPA n-6' and depression persisted among specific demographic and lifestyle subgroups, including females, non-Mexican Americans, non-obese, those aged over 60 years, smokers and drinkers. Background: Beginning in 1977, the U.S. Government began formally issuing dietary advice, a main objective of which was to reduce and prevent the prevalence of obesity in the American population. Concurrently, the Harvard School of Public Health began conducting dietary intake surveys and collecting body mass index (BMI) (kg/m 2 ) data on female nurses in the Nurses' Health Study I (NHSI) and II (NHSII)., Objectives: We aimed to assess whether compliance with the nutrition guidance from the U.S. Government to restrict dietary intake regarding total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol was meaningfully associated with the prevalence of obesity., Methods: We analyzed nutrition survey data from 1980 to 2011, grouping the sample into "compliers," those who complied with guidance on the intake of total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, and "noncompliers," those who did not. We then compared the means, medians, and distributions of BMI for compliers and noncompliers over the period for both the full survey population and an age-controlled sample. Finally, we plotted raw NHS data to examine respondents' Fat Proportion intake of energy and concurrent BMI., Results: The mean and median BMI for both compliers and noncompliers increased throughout the sample period, and the BMI distributions shifted toward obese and severely obese overall and for an age-controlled subset compared with the 1980 NHSI and 1990 NHSII baselines. Compliers had slightly lower mean BMI increases than noncompliers but saw a relatively higher increase in the growth of the prevalence of those with BMI >30. We also found no linear relationship between Fat Proportion of energy intake and concurrent BMI., Conclusions: Guidance from the U.S. Government to limit fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol consumption was widely adopted by American female nurses during the study period. Background The increased use of high-oleic oils to replace trans fat has led to concern about declining intake of PUFA and the potential for essential fatty acid insufficiency or even deficiency. Objectives The aim of this study was to examine circulating concentrations of essential and poorly biosynthesized fatty acids, as biomarkers of dietary intake, in the NHANES data sets prior to (2003–2004 cycle) and following (2011–2012 cycle) legislation to reduce trans fat in the food supply and also to explore the associations between these fatty acids and markers of cardiometabolic health. Methods Fasting circulating concentrations of fatty acids from adults (aged ≥20 y) in the 2003–2004 and 2011–2012 NHANES cycles were used for analysis. Dietary data from one day of both the 2003–2004 and 2011–2012 cycles were used to examine differences in dietary fatty acid intake between these cycles. Regression analyses were used to assess relations between circulating concentrations of fatty acids and cardiometabolic health. Results Between 2003–2004 and 2011–2012, circulating concentrations of linoleic acid (LA) increased (1.38%, P  = 0.002); no difference in dietary intake was observed. α-Linolenic acid (ALA), measured by dietary intake (0.14 g, P  < 0.001) and circulating concentrations (0.23%, P  < 0.01), increased from 2003–2004 to 2011–2012. Circulating LA was inversely associated with BMI (in kg/m2; regression coefficient per percentage point change in LA ± SE: –0.22 ± 0.04), waist circumference (–0.62 ± 0.09 cm), systolic blood pressure (–0.38 ± 0.09 mm Hg), triglycerides (–9.92 ± 0.63 mg/dL), glucose (–3.34 ± 0.13 mg/dL), insulin (–0.18 ± 0.05 µU/mL), and HOMA-IR (–0.29 ± 0.05). Conclusions In a nationally representative sample of US adults, no declines in circulating concentrations of essential fatty acids, LA and ALA, were observed between 2003–2004 and 2011–2012, a time when high-oleic oils were increasingly used in the food supply. Higher amounts of circulating LA were correlated with lower risk of cardiometabolic dysfunction, which underscores the importance of monitoring consumption in the United States. Background: Propolis is a resinous substance produced by bees. Propolis extracts have been used for anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. The use of propolis dietary supplements has been increasing in the United States and the rest of the world. Objective: A simple, economic, and valid analytical method is needed for quality assessment of dietary supplements and extracts claiming to contain propolis. Methods: A ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) quadropole time-of-flight-MS method was used to characterize the chemical composition of northern Indian propolis. Fourteen major phenolic compounds were quantified using a UHPLC-DAD method. An HPTLC method was used to develop chemical fingerprinting profiles for propolis extracts and dietary supplements. The seven propolis extracts and 14 dietary supplements purchased in the U.S. were analyzed using the UHPLC-DAD-QToF method. Results: Fifty-seven compounds belonging to phenolic, coumarin, fatty acid, and terpene classes were identified in propolis extracts. Based on quantification results, the content of 14 phenolic compounds in propolis extracts varied from 19–32% in dietary supplements, a significant variation to the recommended daily intake (0.2–94 mg/day). Feed ingredients and additives could be a potential medium for foreign animal disease entry into the United States. The feed industry has taken active steps to reduce the risk of pathogen entry through ingredients. Medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) and heat pulse treatment could be an opportunity to prevent pathogen contamination. The objective of experiment 1 was to determine the impact of 0, 30, 60, or 90 d storage time on fat-soluble vitamin stability when vitamin premix (VP) and vitamin trace mineral premix (VTM) were blended with 1% inclusion of MCFA (1:1:1 blend of C6:C8:C10) or mineral oil (MO) with different environmental conditions. Samples stored at room temperature (RT) (~22 °C) or in an environmentally controlled chamber set at 40 °C and 75% humidity, high-temperature high humidity (HTHH). The sample bags were pulled out at days 0, 30, 60 and 90 for RT condition and HTHH condition. The objective of experiment 2 was to determine the effect of heat pulse treatment and MCFA addition on fat-soluble vitamin stability with two premix types. A sample from each treatment was heated at 60 °C and 20% humidity. For experiment 1, the following effects were significant for vitamin A: premix type × storage condition (P = 0.031) and storage time × storage condition (P = 0.002) interactions; for vitamin D3: main effect of storage condition (P < 0.001) and storage time (P = 0.002); and for vitamin E: storage time × storage condition interaction (P < 0.001). For experiment 2, oil type did not affect the stability of fat-soluble vitamins (P > 0.732) except for vitamin A (P = 0.030). There were no differences for fat-soluble vitamin stability between VP and VTM (P > 0.074) except for vitamin E (P = 0.016). Therefore, the fat-soluble vitamins were stable when mixed with both vitamin and VTM and stored at 22 °C with 28.4% relative humidity (RH). When premixes were stored at 39.5 °C with 78.8%RH, the vitamin A and D3 were stable up to 30 d while the vitamin E was stable up to 60 d. In addition, MCFA did not influence fat-soluble vitamin degradation during storage up to 90 d and in the heat pulse process. The vitamin stability was decreased by 5% to 10% after the premixes was heated at 60 °C for approximately nine and a half hours. If both chemical treatment (MCFA) and heat pulse treatment have similar efficiency at neutralizing or reducing the target pathogen, the process of chemical treatment could become a more practical practice. Background: Very-long-chain SFAs (VLCSFAs), such as arachidic acid (20:0), behenic acid (22:0), and lignoceric acid (24:0), have demonstrated inverse associations with cardiometabolic conditions, although more evidence is needed to characterize their relation with risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). In addition, little is known regarding their potential dietary and lifestyle predictors.Objective: We aimed to examine the association of plasma and erythrocyte concentrations of VLCSFAs with incident T2D risk.Methods: We used existing measurements of fatty acid concentrations in plasma and erythrocytes among 2854 and 2831 participants in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (HPFS), respectively. VLCSFAs were measured using GLC, and individual fatty acid concentrations were expressed as a percentage of total fatty acids. Incident T2D cases were identified by self-reports and confirmed by a validated supplementary questionnaire. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to evaluate the association between VLCSFAs and T2D, adjusting for demographic, lifestyle, and dietary variables.Results: During 39,941 person-years of follow-up, we documented 243 cases of T2D. Intakes of peanuts, peanut butter, vegetable fat, dairy fat, and palmitic/stearic (16:0-18:0) fatty acids were significantly, albeit weakly, correlated with plasma and erythrocyte VLCSFA concentrations (|rs| ≤ 0.19). Comparing the highest with the lowest quartiles of plasma concentrations, pooled HRs (95% CIs) were 0.51 (0.35, 0.75) for arachidic acid, 0.43 (0.28, 0.64) for behenic acid, 0.40 (0.27, 0.61) for lignoceric acid, and 0.41 (0.27, 0.61) for the sum of VLCSFAs, after multivariate adjustments for demographic, lifestyle, and dietary factors. For erythrocyte VLCSFAs, only arachidic acid and behenic acid concentrations were inversely associated with T2D risk.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that, in US men and women, higher plasma concentrations of VLCSFAs are associated with lower risk of T2D. Research in the cannabinoid field, namely on phytocannabinoids, the endogenous cannabinoids anandamide and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol and their metabolizing and synthetic enzymes, the cannabinoid receptors, and anandamide-like cannabinoid compounds, has expanded tremendously over the last few years. Numerous endocannabinoid-like compounds have been discovered. The Cannabis plant constituent cannabidiol (CBD) was found to exert beneficial effects in many preclinical disease models ranging from epilepsy, cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and autoimmunity to neurodegenerative and kidney diseases and cancer. CBD was recently approved in the United States for the treatment of rare forms of childhood epilepsy. This has triggered the development of many CBD-based products for human use, often with overstated claims regarding their therapeutic effects. In this article, the recently published research on the chemistry and biological effects of plant cannabinoids (specifically CBD), endocannabinoids, certain long-chain fatty acid amides, and the variety of relevant receptors is critically reviewed. Background: No prospective observational study has specifically examined the associations between dietary intakes of medium-chain fatty acids and risk of colorectal cancer., Objectives: This study examined the association between dietary intakes of medium-chain fatty acids and colorectal cancer risk overall and by racial subgroups in a predominantly low-income United States population., Methods: This prospective study included 71,599 eligible participants aged 40 to 79 who were enrolled in the Southern Community Cohort Study between 2002 and 2009 in 12 southeastern United States states. Incident colorectal cancer cases were ascertained via linkage to state cancer registries, which was completed through 31 December, 2016. The dietary intakes of medium-chain fatty acids were assessed using a validated 89-item food frequency questionnaire. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations between intakes of medium-chain fatty acids and risk for incident colorectal cancer., Results: Among 71,599 participants, 48,008 (67.3%) were Black individuals and 42,260 (59.0%) were female. A total of 868 incident colorectal cancer cases occurred during a median follow-up of 13.7 y. Comparing the highest to the lowest quartile, high intake of dodecanoic acid/lauric acid (C12:0) was associated with reduced risk of colorectal cancer among White participants (HR: 0.52; 95% CI: 0.30, 0.91; P-trend = 0.05), but not in Black individuals (HR: 0.92; 95% CI, 0.68, 1.24; P-trend = 0.80) in multivariable-adjusted models. No associations were found between intakes of hexanoic acid/caproic acid (C6:0), octanoic acid/caprylic acid (C8:0), or decanoic acid/capric acid (C10:0) and risk of incident colorectal cancer overall or within racial subgroups., Conclusions: In a predominantly low-income United States population, an increased dietary C12:0 intake was associated with a substantially reduced risk of colorectal cancer only among White individuals, but not in Black individuals., (Copyright © 2023 American Society for Nutrition. The Colorado Potato Beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, is a major agricultural pest of solanaceous crops in the United States. Historically, a multitude of insecticides have been used to control problematic populations. Due to increasing resistance to insecticides, novel compounds and methodologies are warranted for the control of beetle populations. Mixed-isomer conjugated linoleic acid has been studied in-depth for its beneficial properties to mammalian systems. At the same time, studies have demonstrated that conjugated linoleic acid can manipulate fatty acid composition in non-mammalian systems, resulting in embryo mortality. Consequently, experiments were conducted to assess the effects of foliar-applied conjugated linoleic acid on larval growth, embryogenesis, and feeding preference in Colorado potato beetle. Both maternal and deterrent effects of dietary conjugated linoleic acid were assessed. Conjugated linoleic acid demonstrated desirable insecticidal properties, including increased larval mortality, slowed larval development, antifeedant effects, and decreased egg viability after maternal ingestion. Ecological complexity may improve ecosystem function, stability and adaptability to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Intraspecific trophic variation can represent a significant component of total community variation and can influence food web structure and function. Thus, understanding how trophic niches are partitioned between intraspecific and interspecific processes could improve our understanding of food web dynamics. We examined gut contents, fatty acids and stable isotope ratios in round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) across six sites in Lake Michigan, USA, to determine patterns in intra‐ and interspecific trophic composition (i.e., mean gut or fatty acid composition) and diversity (i.e., the diversity of gut items or fatty acids). We also examined relationships between fatty acid diversity and gut content characteristics to understand potential mechanisms shaping individual trophic phenotypes. There was significant variation in both trophic composition and diversity among sites, and individual and spatial variation was as important to total trophic variation as species identity. Round goby that consumed dreissenid mussels had more diverse fatty acid profiles than those that consumed other benthic invertebrates, whereas yellow perch fatty acid diversity was not related to gut content composition. Our results confirm that intraspecific variation in resource use can be as important to trophic dynamics as interspecific variation, and that spatial variation in lower level food web processes or habitat may strongly structure local food web dynamics. Individual‐level examination of trophic diversity, in concert with trophic composition, could provide additional information about the resilience, function and adaptability of local food webs. Purpose: Essential fatty acids are critical for brain growth and neurodevelopment in infancy. Maternal diet and supplement use have a significant impact on the fat composition of human milk. The objective of this study is to assess supplement utilization patterns and fatty acid and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentrations in the breast milk of women following vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore diet patterns. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, observational study of 74 lactating women in the United States following a vegan (n = 26), vegetarian (n = 22), or omnivore (n = 26) diet pattern. A single breast milk sample was collected from each participant and assessed for fatty acids and BDNF. Results: Median unsaturated fatty acids in the breast milk of vegan, vegetarian, and omnivores, as a percentage of total fatty acids, was 66.0, 57.8, and 56.2%, respectively (p < 0.001). Total omega-3 percentages were 2.29% for vegans, 1.55% for vegetarians, and 1.46% for omnivores (p < 0.001). Docosahexaenoic acid percentages were not different by diet pattern, but over 80% of participants had milk concentrations below 0.30% of total fatty acids. Reports of omega-3 supplements use (10/74) and weekly seafood consumption (3/74) were limited. BDNF was not detectable in any samples. Conclusions: Breast milk from vegans had significantly higher unsaturated fat and total omega-3 fats, and lower saturated fats, trans fats, and omega-6 to omega-3 ratios than their vegetarian and omnivore counterparts. • Near-infrared spectroscopy calibration was developed for mixed seed lots of Camelina sativa. • Morphological differences between biotypes of C. sativa were established. • Morphological changes during plant development have been determined in C. sativa. Camelina [ Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz] has two distinctive biotypes, summer and winter, with winter biotypes requiring a vernalization treatment to enter the reproductive phase. Increased interest in broadening the diversity of winter-hardy cover crops in the northern Great Plains of the U.S. to reduce soil erosion through the winter months has led seed companies to offer winter camelina seed outsourced from other states. Regrettably, in 2017, outsourced camelina seed from other states turned out to be summer biotypes that did not survive the North Dakota winter. The objectives of this study were to determine the morphological characteristics of seed and seedlings from summer- and winter-biotypes. Morphological characteristics of seedlings were determined by growing nineteen summer- and eleven winter-biotypes in an environmental chamber. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replicates. To determine differences in seed wavelength absorbance between winter- and summer-biotypes both visible and near infrared spectra were examined, which encompass 400–2498 nm wavelengths. Mixtures of cultivars Joelle (winter) and one summer type were analyzed using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Seed mixtures were prepared in increments of 5% of 'Joelle'. Mixtures of different lots of Joelle were prepared in increments of 25%. Significant interactions were present and observed for pairs of vegetative leaves, growth stage, height, leaf length, leaf width and the number of lobes. The equation for the ratio of winter seed (r 2 = 0.96) performed very well, being able to distinguish known field grown cultivars used in the equation. Differences in seed and seedling morphological characteristics can be used to differentiate winter- or summer-biotypes. Having a rapid method to determine the percentage of winter camelina in an unknown seed sample will be very favorable for all producers, as well as seed companies, interested in growing winter camelina as either a winter-hardy cover crop or as a winter annual cash crop. Low-income Hispanic women are at-risk of poor prenatal diet quality. Correlates associated with prenatal diet quality in this group of women are understudied. The objective of this study was to examine the associations between financial, cultural, psychosocial, and lifestyle correlates and prenatal diet quality in low-income Hispanic women. This cross-sectional analysis used data from pregnant women enrolled in the Starting Early Trial, a randomized-controlled trial of a primary-care based child obesity prevention program beginning in pregnancy. The trial enrolled women from clinics affiliated with a large urban medical center in New York City from 2012 to 2014. Financial, cultural, psychosocial, and lifestyle variables were collected using a comprehensive baseline questionnaire. Usual dietary intakes over the past year were assessed using the Block Food Frequency Questionnaire 2005 bilingual version. The study enrolled low-income Hispanic women between 28 and 32 gestational weeks (N=519). Prenatal diet quality was measured by the Healthy Eating Index 2015. Unadjusted and adjusted multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to determine independent associations between financial, cultural, psychosocial, and lifestyle correlates and Healthy Eating Index 2015 total score. Overall prenatal diet quality was poor (mean Healthy Eating Index 2015 total score=69.0±9.4). Most women did not meet the maximum score for total vegetables (65.3%), whole grains (97.1%), dairy (74.8%), fatty acids (84.4%), refined grains (79.8%), sodium (97.5%), saturated fats (92.9%), and added sugars (66.5%). Women who reported screen time ≤2 hours/day, physical activity before and/or during pregnancy, and being born outside the United States had higher mean Healthy Eating Index 2015 total score than women with screen time >2 hours/day, no physical activity, and those born in the United States. Prenatal diet quality of low-income pregnant Hispanic women was suboptimal. This cross-sectional study revealed associations between cultural and lifestyle factors and prenatal diet quality in low-income Hispanic women. Menhaden oil was enzymatically modified with caprylic (8:0) and/or stearic acid (18:0) to produce structured lipids (SL). The goal was to produce SL with high amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), a low level of saturation, and a melting point of 25–35 °C. Substrate (menhaden oil to acyl donor) molar ratios were 1:1, 1:3, and 1:5 for 8:0, and 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 for 18:0. Enzyme load was 10% of the total weight of substrates. Time course study determined optimal time for maximum acyl donor incorporation. Linear interpolation estimated molar ratios that yielded SL with 20 or 30 mol% incorporation of 8:0 or 18:0. Enzymatic reactions were also conducted with molar ratios of menhaden oil to acyl donors:8:0:18:0 (1:1:3, 1:2:2, and 1:3:1). Lipases from Candida antarctica, Lipozyme® 435, and Rhizomucor miehei, Lipozyme® RM IM (Novozymes North America, Inc., Franklinton, NC, USA), were compared for all reactions. Total and sn‐2 fatty acid compositions, triacylglycerol (TAG) molecular species, thermal behavior, volatile lipid oxidation products, solid fat contents, and oxidative stability were compared. When 8:0 was the acyl donor, the 1:3.03 and 1:4.58 ratios resulted in incorporation of 20 and 30 mol% 8:0, respectively. With 18:0 as the acyl donor, the 1:1.32 and 1:2.41 ratios led to incorporation of 20 and 30 mol% 18:0, respectively. The 1:3:1 ratio SL had a crystallization onset (C0) of 15.3 °C and a melting completion (Mc) of 33.1 °C. Although cover crops (CC) are believed to play a major role in soil quality improvement, the effects of CC on microbial populations and community structure is not well understood. The objective of this study was to quantify CC effects on soil microbial biomass and community structure under a corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotation. The study was conducted at the Chariton County Cover Crop Soil Health Research and Demonstration Farm (CCSH) in Missouri, USA, where CC were first established in 2012. Soils were sampled in 2016, 2017, and 2018 from the 0- to 10-cm depth layer using a grid sampling design and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) pro- files were determined. Microbial biomass and microbial community structure (total fungi, total bacteria, rhizobia, gram (-), and actinomycetes biomass), as estimated from the PLFA biomarkers, were significantly greater (P < 0.05) in the CC treatment compared to no cover crop (NCC) in 2016 and 2018 (2.4- and 1.7-fold larger, respectively). Within the CC treatment, differences by soil type were also observed, finding that the silt loam soil supported greater total microbial biomass than the loam soil in 2018. Spatial distribution patterns of total microbial biomass, bacteria biomass and fungi biomass differed with time. Overall, this study demonstrated that the CC treatment affected the soil microbial community biomass and structure, which has potential environmental, production, and soil quality benefits. Objective: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and liver function biomarkers were reexamined for relatively lower serum concentrations of PFAS observed in recent years. Methods: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011 to 2014 data were analyzed for obese and nonobese participants for serum perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) as well as four liver function biomarkers in risk-adjusted analysis. Results: Among obese participants only, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was positively associated with PFOA (β = 0.07065, P<0.01), PFHxS (β = 0.051349, P<0.01), and with PFNA β = 0.072742, P<0.01). PFOA (β = 0.07422, P = 0.03) and PFNA (β = 0.077995, P < 0.01) were associated with gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) in obese participants. Conclusions: Recent lower levels of PFOA, PFHxS, and PFNA are associated with higher serum liver functions but only among obese participants. Introduction: Obesity is an epidemic affecting more than one-third of adults in the United States. Obese women experience decreased fertility, explained in part by oocyte quality. Since follicular fluid (FF) provides an important microenvironment for oocyte growth, we sought to evaluate the effect of increased body weight on FF levels of 11 metabolic hormones and fatty acid metabolism. Methods: The FF was collected from 25 women (10 normal weight, 10 overweight, and 5 obese) with diminished ovarian reserve undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) following a minimal stimulation protocol. Hormone levels were determined by multiplex immunoassay using the MAGPIX (Luminex, Austin, Texas) instrument. Fatty acid metabolites were determined using gas and ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Results: Levels of hormones related to glucose and energy homeostasis and regulation of fat stores (insulin, glucagon, glucagon-like peptide-1, C-peptide, and leptin) were increased significantly in FF from obese women compared to FF from nonobese(normal weight and overweight) women. Interestingly, FF levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) isoleucine, leucine, and valine as well as uric acid, isocaproic acid, butanoic acid, tyrosine, threonine, glycine, and methionine correlated positively with body mass index. Conclusion: This pilot study demonstrates significant alterations in the FF milieu of obese women undergoing IVF, which may contribute to the decreased fecundity of obese women. Although the impact of this environment on oocyte and embryo development is not fully realized, these changes may also lead to imprinting at the genomic level and long-term sequelae on offspring. Purpose: Molecular markers in environmental geochemistry include natural product or pollutant chemicals in sediments that are indicative of discharge sources or emission pathways. Four classes of molecular marker compounds, including fatty acids, sterols, PCBs, and PAHs, in surficial sediments (top 2 cm) collected along a downstream transect of the Potomac River within the US mid-Atlantic region were analyzed and correlated with potential pollution discharge sources in close proximity to the sampling sites.Materials and methods: Thirty-five surficial sediment samples were collected using a petite Ponar grab sampler along a 320-km longitudinal transect of the Potomac River (mid-Atlantic USA), a major tributary of Chesapeake Bay, ranging from the upland fluvial river to its confluence with the Bay. The sediments were collected along the transect at approximately equidistant points. The marker chemicals were extracted from sediments using microwave-assisted extraction and quantified on a dry weight basis by gas chromatography or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sediment moisture, texture, and organic carbon and nitrogen content were also determined.Results and discussion: Fatty acids and sterols were well correlated with ecological factors in the Potomac River, while the sterol ratio epi+brassicasterol/stigmasterol showed moderate spatial correlation with nearby waste treatment plants (WTPs) and city locations, especially in the upland and tidal freshwater river. The fecal sterol coprostanol also showed moderate spatial correlation with some WTPs in both the upland and tidal river. PCB and PAH concentrations were primarily correlated with urban and large military installations. PCBs in sediments appeared to be predominantly derived from Aroclors while PAHs showed a strong pyrogenic origin. Retene and perylene were unique markers for PAHs in sediment and were indicative of aged organic matter in sediments.Conclusions: The marker chemicals had utility in identifying pollution emission sources and pathways in the Potomac River. For PCB pollutants, sediment profiles reflected localized source emissions from industrial sites. PAHs showed a downstream plume effect derived from urban Washington, DC. Fatty acids and sterols were most useful for identifying ecological shifts (i.e., terrestrial versus aquatic origin), but showed spatial correlations with wastewater treatment plants and cities. Background: Borrelia sp. is a causative pathogen of Lyme disease which has become a worldwide health concern. Non-toxic approaches especially directed toward latent persistent forms of this pathogen are desired. Lipids in the form of volatile and non-volatile oils, and fatty acids with proven anti-borreliae efficacy could become an additional support or an alternative for consideration in treatment approaches. Methods: In this study we investigated 47 lipids (30 volatile and non-volatile oils, and 17 fatty acids) of plant and animal origin against typical motile, knob/round-shaped persisters, and biofilm-like aggregates of Borrelia burgdorferi s.s. and Borrelia garinii, which are identified as pathogenic factors of Lyme disease in the USA and Europe, using direct microscopic counting and spectrofluorometric measurements. Results: Out of all examined lipids, 5 oils (Bay leaf oil, Birch oil, Cassia oil, Chamomile oil German, and Thyme oil) at or below 0.25%, and 3 fatty acids (13Z,16Z Docosadienoic acid, erucic acid, and petroselinic acid) at or below 0.75 mg/ml, showed bactericidal activity against typical motile spirochetes and knob/round-shaped persisters. Only Bay leaf oil and Cassia oil, including their major constituents, eugenol and cinnamaldehyde, showed to target biofilm-like aggregates of both tested Borrelia spp. at the same concentration, although with 20–30% eradication mark. Conclusion: Based on obtained results, volatile oils were more potent than non-volatile oils, and unsaturated fatty acids were more effective than saturated fatty acids. Among all tested oils, Bay leaf oil and Cassia oil, with their major components eugenol and cinnamaldehyde, seem to have the highest anti-borreliae efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States and globally and is largely attributable to atherosclerosis. Evidence indicates that multiple dietary components contribute to the complex causes of CVD and associated events and mortality. Public health authorities and scientific organizations have recommended reduced saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake for decades to promote cardiovascular health, which is linked to favorable impacts on established and emerging atherosclerotic CVD risk factors. Recently, a debate has emerged about whether SFA intake should be reduced for CVD prevention, which has contributed to confusion among health care professionals, including registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), and the general public, and necessitates the critical evaluation of the evidence. The objective of this evidence-based nutrition practice guideline is to provide health care and public health professionals, particularly RDNs, with evidence-based recommendations on how to address SFA intake in adults within an individualized healthy dietary pattern. Moderate evidence supports the reduction of SFA intake for CVD event reduction, low- to moderate-certainty evidence supports prioritization of replacement of SFAs with polyunsaturated fatty acids, and low-certainty evidence supports focusing on reducing the total amount of SFA rather than specific food sources of SFA. Guideline implementation should include consideration of individual preferences; principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access; and potential nutritional deficiencies that may occur with reduced SFA intake. Background: The association between the intake of dietary n3 and n6 fatty acids and the risk of stroke is subject to debate. The primary objective of the present research was to establish the correlation in a large sample of American adults., Methods: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2018, the association of the intake of dietary n3 and n6 fatty acids with stroke events was analyzed in a sample of 29,459 adults. The intake of n3 and n6 fatty acids intake was assessed though two 24-h dietary recalls. Stroke outcomes were identified based on the responses provided in self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression was fitted to evaluate the correlation of dietary n3, n6 fatty acids intake with stroke events., Results: Subjects in the highest tertile (T3) of dietary n3 (OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.49-0.93), n6 (OR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.45-0.95) fatty acids intake were found to have obviously lower risk of stroke compared to those in the lowest tertile (T1), but the n6:n3 ratio was not found to be associated with a stroke event. Results from stratified analysis demonstrated that dietary n3 fatty acids had an inverse correlation of stroke in both male and female, but dietary n6 fatty acids only had this correlation in male. Moreover, findings were made that the interaction was significant in terms of age in the subgroup analysis, and the negative relationship between the intake of dietary n3 and n6 fatty acids and stroke event were particularly pronounced among participants aged ≥60., Conclusions: The present results suggested that increased dietary n3, n6 fatty acids intake correlated with a lower risk of stroke., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2023 Luan et al.
