Shortly after losing her health insurance in 2018, Jane Robinson died of a treatable respiratory infection. This article argues that Jane's death occurred at the nexus of two different approaches to care: the necropolitics of uncare and the micropolitics of generative care labor. Both of these approaches to care increased Jane's health and social vulnerability, in turn quickening her death. We adopt the necropolitics of uncare framework to identify and name the harmful policies and attitudes of disregard that control access to life saving medical care. In the micropolitics of care in Jane's life, she became the safety net for others, which left little over when her health began to deteriorate. This social autopsy reveals that her care networks were insufficient to undo the uncare enshrined in state policy. We argue that one important role of the contemporary president is to be a conductor of public feelings. To demonstrate, we analyze U.S. President Barack Obama’s national eulogy speech delivered on January 12, 2011 in Tucson, Arizona. We show how Obama acts as a musical or energy conductor, redirecting a soundscape of boisterous enthusiasm to be in concert with discordant feelings of national pain and anger and moving them toward social love that is non-partisan and at times civic-centered. During his first term as president, Barack Obama delivered four national eulogies at the sites of gun violence tragedies, two of which garnered considerable national attention: one delivered in Tucson, Arizona on January 12, 2011 (following the attack on Representative Gabrielle Giffords and an assembled crowd), and another in Newtown, Connecticut on December 16, 2012 (following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School). The deaths of innocents, the result of a host of causes, required the president to face the issue of gun violence, help the nation work through the trauma, and create the conditions of civility necessary for policy action. At Tucson, Obama drew from the book of Job to explain that the evil in Tucson happened "for reasons that defy human understanding." In his Newtown address, Obama replaced the more fatalistic theology of his Tucson memorial with a spirit of perseverance and renewal rooted in 2 Corinthians. In this essay, I suggest that Obama's eulogy at Newtown serves as a counterpart to the call Obama advanced in the Tucson address. I argue that, though the messages embedded in the Tucson speech serve as a legitimate theological and epistemological check on the presumptions of reason, the Newtown address better met the aspirations of civility because it led to a consideration of policies designed to reduce gun violence. The article discusses political partisanship as a theme in the U.S. presidential eulogies related to the U.S. Space Shuttle disasters in 1986 and 2003 by then-U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush respectively. The authors state that because the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was a significant part of the national identity, Reagan and Bush could not respond to the accidents as did then-U.S. president Lyndon Johnson following the Apollo accident of January 27, 1967, that claimed the lives of three astronauts. The article examines epideictic rhetoric during the history of the U.S. presidency and discusses the "Challenger" and "Columbia" accidents as national crises within the contexts of the Cold War and the War on Terror.

The eulogies delivered at the funeral of John C. Calhoun held a special significance in a culture, such as that of the Old South, where traditions of rhetorical excellence were still highly prized. Sermons, speeches, and orations were listened to attentively, analyzed closely for form as well as content, and often memorized for future use and edification. Beyond that, the funeral oration rather than arguing a point sought to unify the community of listeners by explicating the greatness of the deceased, by appealing to the past accomplishments of the community which the deceased had represented and which the community must now continue to carry on, and, finally, by releasing the emotions of the community, helping to reconcile it to its loss. More an act of purgation than persuasion, the funeral oration became an occasion that bound its audience in a rhetoric of collective reaffirmation. Examination of the thought of Cornell and Miles in the ritualized moment of the funeral oration provides insights into the engagement of religion and politics in antebellum America.
