The article focuses on the physical principle of shaking out granules from a container. The more a salt shaker is banged and shook, the harder it gets for the salt to come out. Physics Robert Behringer, professor of Physics, has discovered that the more that granules in a container are agitated, the more likely they are to clump together into a rigid mass. Postdoc researcher, Karen Daniels who has since joined the faculty at North Carolina State University, North Carolina, helped him in this study. The discovery led them to develop a method to either make granules freeze into a solid-state crystal formation of melt so that they flow like a liquid. The technique allows to both control and measure the effect of different ways to energize a granular material. According to Behringer, the real-world applications could help solve some common engineering problems. After experimenting with a container full of plastic beads, it was seen that when vibrated the movement of the top beads became more uniform and the mix solidified. If granules are shaken and rattled, they don't roll.
