Watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) & Nakai] is widely grown on plastic mulches in the southeast United States, but responses of plants to plastic mulch color are not well understood. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of colored plastic mulches and changes in root zone temperature (RZT) on fruit yield of watermelon fruit. The mulches (152 cm wide) evaluated were: black, blue, gray, red, silver (metallic), and white. During the first weeks after transplanting, canopy development was more rapid on black, blue, and red than silver and white mulches. As the season progressed and temperatures increased, differences in canopy development among mulch treatments tended to decrease. Watermelon plant growth benefited from soil warming using plastic film mulches, mainly blue, black, and red. There were no differences in fruit yield among different colored mulches, indicating that under the temperature conditions of the present study, the RZTs during fruiting were within optimal range for watermelon which is estimated to be 28.3°C. Grafted watermelon plants available in the United States are typically transported for a long distance from a specialized nursery to the production field. To investigate the effects of chilling stress during transportation on the early plant growth and development, grafted and nongrafted 'Tri-X-313' seedless watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) seedlings were subjected to low-temperature treatments applied over a 72-hour period. The first experiment exposed grafted and nongrafted seedlings to 0, 6, 12, 24, or 48 hours of 1 °C chilling, and then were moved to a 12 °C growth chamber for the remainder of the chilling treatment period. The second experiment exposed nongrafted seedlings to seven different combinations of chilling duration (0, 24, 32, 41, 44, or 48 hours) to create varied chilling degree hours (CDH) at different temperatures (between 20.4 °C and 1.2 °C). After 72 hours, seedlings were transplanted in pots filled with a commercial substrate in a greenhouse to evaluate the early plant growth and floral development. Each experiment had two repeats (spring and summer) with a randomized complete block design (n 5 10). Although greater exposure to chilling negatively affected visual quality and photosynthetic capacity [measured by chlorophyll fluorescence parameter, variable fluorescence/maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm)] in both repeats, delay in flowering after transplanting was significant in spring only and increased with increasing CDH (upto6dayswith48hoursof 1 °C exposure). Grafting was found to mitigate the degree of flowering delay when the same chilling exposure was applied. When chilling temperatures were varied, visual damage of leaves, decrease in Fv/Fm, and delays in female flower development were best correlated with CDH at a base temperature of 15 °C, 3 °C, and 4 °C, respectively. Our experiments and further analyses with available literature data suggest that 50 to 70 CDH4 [CDH with base temperature (BT) 5 4 °C] seems to be a critical threshold to cause significant delay in female flower development (3.5 days for grafted and 1.3 days for nongrafted plants). Therefore, if temperatures lower than 4 °C are expected during transportation of seedlings, we suggest mitigation measures be taken so that CDH4 do not reach greater than 50 degree hours. Phytophthora fruit rot, caused by Phytophthora capsici, is prevalent in most watermelon-producing regions of southeastern United States and is known to cause pre- and post-harvest yield losses. A non-wound inoculation technique was developed to evaluate detached mature fruit belonging to U.S. watermelon PIs for resistance to fruit rot caused by P. capsici. Mature fruit were harvested and placed on wire shelves in a walk-in humid chamber [greater than 95% relative humidity (RH), temperature 26 ± 2 °C] and inoculated with a 7-mm agar plug from an actively growing colony of P. capsici. Twenty-four PIs that exhibited resistance in a preliminary evaluation of 205 PIs belonging to the watermelon core collection in 2009 were grown in the field and greenhouse in 2010 and 2011 and evaluated in the walk-in humid chamber. Fruit rot development was rapid on fruit of susceptible controls 'Black Diamond', 'Sugar Baby', and PI 536464. Several accessions including PI 560020, PI 306782, PI 186489, and PI 595203 (all Citrullus ianatus var. lanatus) were highly resistant to fruit rot. One C. colocynthis (PI 388770) and a C. lanatus var. citroides PI (PI 189225) also showed fruit rot resistance. Fruit from PIs that were resistant also had significantly lower amounts of P. capsici DNA/gram of fruit tissue compared with the susceptible commercial cultivars Sugar Baby and Black Diamond. The sources of resistance to Phytophthora fruit rot identified in this study may prove useful in watermelon breeding programs aimed at enhancing disease resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Powdery mildew of cucurbits, incited by Podosphaera xanthii (Castagne) Braun & Shishkoff (syn. Sphaerotheca fuliginea auct. p.p.). is an economically important foliar disease, which is now common in watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Mastum. & Nakai]. This disease occurs in all watermelon-growing areas and can reduce yields by up to 30%. Finding and breeding for resistance to this disease is important to reduce dependence on fungicides and to use in combination with fungicides to limit the spread of fungicide-resistant P. xanthii. This is the first English report that race 2WF of P. xanthii can infect watermelon. It is the prevalent race of watermelon powdery mildew in Beijing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) of cucurbits is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli. The disease gained importance in the late 1980s, after devastating outbreaks in watermelon fields in several states in the US. Since then, BFB has spread worldwide, and has been reported in other cucurbits such as melon, pumpkin, squash, and cucumber. A. avenae subsp. citrulli is a seedborne pathogen of highly destructive potential. Under favorable conditions, the bacterium spreads rapidly throughout nurseries and in the field, leading to seedling blight or, at a later stage, fruit rot. Strategies for managing BFB are limited and there are no reliable sources of BFB resistance. The disease therefore represents a serious threat to the cucurbit industry. Despite its economic importance, there is little knowledge on basic aspects of the pathogen's biology or on the molecular basis of BFB pathogenesis. Recently, the genome sequence of one A. avenae subsp. citrulli strain was released, making a great contribution to the investigation of basic aspects of BFB. A better understanding of these aspects will contribute to improved screens for BFB resistance and to the development of more effective strategies to manage this threatening disease. Watermelon is an important cucurbit vegetable crop grown in most of the United States. Phytophthora fruit rot of watermelon caused by Phytophthora capsici has been a major factor, limiting production for the past 15 years in the southeastern United States. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service released five Phytophthora fruit rot-resistant germplasm lines for use in breeding programs. These lines were developed by phenotyping using a local isolate of P. capsici from South Carolina. The present study was undertaken to determine if these resistant lines had broad resistance to diverse P. capsici isolates collected from different states and crops. Five resistant germplasm lines (USVL020-PFR, USVL203-PFR, USVL782-PFR, USVL489-PFR, and USVL531-MDR) and two susceptible cultivars, Sugar Baby and Mickey Lee, used as checks were grown in a field in 2014 and 2015 to produce fruit for evaluation. Mature fruit were harvested and placed in a walk-in growth chamber and inoculated with 20 different P. capsici isolates. The chamber was maintained at 26 ± 2°C and high relative humidity (>95%) using a humidifier. All five resistant germplasm lines were significantly more resistant than the two susceptible checks to all 20 P. capsici isolates. Among the five resistant germplasm lines, USVL020-PFR, USVL782-PFR, and USVL531-MDR had broad resistance. Some P. capsici isolates induced minor lesions and rot on USVL489-PFR compared with the other resistant lines. Variation in virulence and genetic diversity among the 20 P. capsici isolates was also observed. The five watermelon germplasm lines will be useful for developing commercial watermelon cultivars with broad resistance to P. capsici .
