Search

There are numerous scholarly articles that focus on Chinese Students' decisions to go overseas and challenges they face in American High Schools. These research generates a holistic view on the subject., with many of them agreeing each other. Yet, despite many scholarly articles discussing this topic, I find few of these studies originate from students who have lived through the experience of having left China to study abroad in the US themselves. This essay will explore and investigate the experience of Chinese students in US high schools through a combination of personal experience and scholarly articles. Some of the results go in accordance with the scholarly articles, while some deviate away from the findings.

This paper examines whether a web-based training on English discourse intonation leads to better spontaneous speech quality for Mandarin Chinese speakers who reside in the U.S. and in China. The four-week fully online training consisted of meta-instruction videos as well as listening and speaking activities, including instant visual pitch contour feedback and individualized evaluation. The students gave a one-minute spontaneous speech on a given topic at the beginning and the end of the study via videoconferencing. Four native English speakers judged the students' speech comprehensibility, fluidity, accent, confidence and attractiveness, in addition to their intonation performance. Two-way ANCOVA test results show that the experimental group made statistically significant improvement in their speech comprehensibility and speaking confidence. In contrast, the control group did not show improvement. The participants' residence in the U.S. or in China did not affect the training effects. There was not an interaction between the participants' residence and the training. The web-based training, visualization and CMC technology provided an effective scaffolding experience and benefited both EFL and ESL students equally. This study also explores Chinese students' challenges with specific intonation features based on both the raters' judgments and the learners' self-evaluations. The results suggest they have more difficulties with thought groups and prominence than with tone choices. While the trainees gave high ratings to all the activities, they preferred individualized evaluation from the researcher to self-created visual feedback using Praat. The findings have implications for Chinese L1-specific intonation instruction and developing web-based computer assisted pronunciation training systems.

This study investigates the roles, applications, and trends of concept map-supported education (CMSE) by reviewing the studies published from 1992 to 2020. Several dimensions, such as the media of concept maps, roles of concepts, sample groups, research methods, application domains, learning contexts, research foci, as well as the citation and co-citation relationships, are taken into account based on the technology-based learning model. From the review results, two thematic clusters were found, namely concept map-facilitated knowledge construction in collaborative learning, and concept map-based learning design to improve learning achievement and motivation. The research focused more on the applications in engineering courses, followed by science and language courses, and potential was also found in arts, business or management, and mathematics. Learning contexts for CMSE are mainly in-class activities, followed by online discussion activities; moreover, it was found that the number of applications in digital game-based learning contexts is increasing. In terms of research foci, more studies investigated learners' performance, attitude/motivation, and perceptions, while less emphasis was put on developing learners' skills, higher order thinking, as well as collaboration and communication competences. Accordingly, several suggestions for future research of CMSE are provided as a reference for researchers and policy makers.

Introduction: Open access to digital research output is increasing, but academic library policies can place restrictions on public access to libraries. This paper reports on a preliminary study to investigate the correlation between academic library access policies and institutional positions of openness to knowledge. Method: This primarily qualitative study used document and data analysis to examine the content of library access or use policies of twelve academic institutions in eight countries. The outcomes were statistically correlated with institutional open access publication policies and practices. Analysis: We used an automated search tool together with manual searching to retrieve Web-based library access policies, then categorised and counted the levels and conditions of public access. We compared scores for institutional library access feature with open access features and percentages of open access publications. Results: Academic library policies may suggest open public access but multi-layered user categories, privileges and fees charged can inhibit such access, with disparities in openness emerging between library policies and institutional open access policies. Conclusion: As open access publishing options and mandates expand, physical entry and access to print and electronic resources in academic libraries is contracting. This conflicts with global library and information commitments to open access to knowledge.

Background and Aim Methods Results Conclusions Esophageal cancer significantly contributes to US cancer mortality, with notable racial disparities. This study aims to provide updated esophageal cancer mortality trends among Black and White adults from 1999 to 2020.CDC‐WONDER was used to identify Black and White adults in the United States from 1999 to 2020. We calculated age‐standardized mortality rates, absolute rate differences, and rate ratios to compare the mortality differences between these populations.From 1999 to 2020 in the United States, there were 303 267 esophageal cancer deaths, with significant racial disparities. The age‐adjusted mortality rate for Black adults fell from 6.52 to 2.62 per 100 000, while for White adults, it declined from 4.19 to 3.97 per 100 000, narrowing the racial mortality gap. Gender‐wise, the study showed a decrease in the mortality rate from 3.31 to 2.29 per 100 000 in Black women, but an increase from 1.52 to 1.99 per 100 000 in White women. Among young men, the rate dropped in Black men from 12.82 to 6.26 per 100 000 but rose in White men from 9.90 to 10.57 per 100 000. Regionally, Black adults in the Midwest and South initially had higher mortality rates than Whites, but this gap reduced over time. By 2020, Black men had lower mortality rates across all regions.Over the last two decades, age‐adjusted esophageal cancer mortality decreased in Black adults but stabilized in White adults, reflecting distinct cancer trends and risk factors. This study validates Shane et al.'s Entrepreneurial Career Motives Scale across nations. A total sample of 948 undergraduate and postgraduate students from five nations (China = 229, Hong Kong = 213, Holland = 136, United States = 155, and Ghana = 215) were recruited to complete a survey designed to measure their entrepreneurial motives and other related constructs. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the hypothesized four-factor structure, namely, "perceived recognition," "sense of independence," "pursuit of learning," and "perceived roles." Results of the measurement invariance comparisons satisfactorily established measurement equivalence of the scale across nations, language versions, and genders. Both convergent and discriminant validities were established as the motives were associated with different constructs in an expected manner. Interestingly, different patterns in the entrepreneurial career motives emerged across nations. Overall, our findings provide support for the construct validity of the Entrepreneurial Motives Scale. Implications for practice, limitations, and future research directions are discussed.

To advance cross-country understanding of parental perceptions of school climate, this study examined the psychometric properties of the Delaware School Climate Survey--Home version (DSCS-H) and also compared the parental perception of school climate among Chinese (n = 999) and American (n = 1,251) parents. Confirmatory factor analyses revealed that the DSCS-H was best supported by a second-order factor model in both samples and full measurement invariance across countries was evident. Comparison of overall school climate latent means revealed that American parents from elementary schools perceived a more positive overall school climate than did Chinese parents. Conversely, Chinese parents of students in high school perceived a more positive overall school climate than the American parents. The latent-mean difference of parental perception of the overall school climate in middle schools across the United States and China was not significantly different. Finally, the latent mean differences in school climate subfactors varied across grade levels. Implications for using the DSCS-H for assessing and understanding the perception of school climate among parents from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to assess: (1) the prevalence of long COVID by asthma status, and (2) the characteristics associated with developing long COVID among adults with asthma in the United States. Data from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey were used. The prevalence of long COVID was reported and stratified by asthma status. The multivariable logistic regression model was conducted to identify the factors associated with developing long COVID. In 2022, the overall prevalence of long COVID among U.S. adults was 6.9%. When stratified by asthma status, the prevalence of long COVID was 13.9% among adults with asthma, and 6.2% among adults without asthma. Among adults with asthma, certain characteristics, including age over 55 years, female sex, obesity, problems paying medical bills and a history of asthma attacks, were significantly associated with developing long COVID. This study revealed that the prevalence of long COVID among adults with asthma was much higher than the general adult population in the United States. The limited validity of the collected information in this study should prompt caution when interpreting our findings. This study offers a nuanced examination of the interplay between climate policy uncertainty (CPU) and three categories of the US commodity futures returns (metals, energy, and soft commodities). By integrating a regression framework with a Markov regime‐switching approach, our results uncover both linear and nonlinear effects of CPU in varying volatility contexts. This comprehensive methodological approach sheds light on CPU's diverse impacts across various types of commodity futures. The findings illustrate CPU's notable influence on metal and energy futures in low‐volatility regime, contrasted with its more pronounced effect on soft commodities during high‐volatility regime. These insights are pivotal for investors strategizing in light of CPU, and underscore the significance of renewable energy in alleviating climate policy uncertainties within commodity markets. To advance our scientific understanding about school climate and bullying victimization from the perspectives of both parents and cross-country comparisons, the present study examined the cross-country similarities and differences of the associations between overall school climate and 3 forms of bullying victimization between United States (U.S.; N = 1,251) and Chinese (N = 999) parents across elementary, middle, and high schools. Confirmatory factor analyses and measurement invariance tests were first conducted to examine the cross-country validity of the Delaware Bullying Victimization Survey--Home (DBVS-H) between U.S. and Chinese parents. Comparison of latent means of bullying victimization revealed that U.S. parents reported higher frequencies of social/relational and verbal bullying victimization compared with Chinese parents. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was then used to examine the cross-country differences of the relationship between school climate and bullying victimization. For parents in both China and the U.S., school climate was found to be significantly associated with 3 types of bullying victimization (i.e., physical, verbal, and social/relational). The negative associations between school climate and all 3 types of bullying victimization reported by U.S. parents were significantly stronger than those found in Chinese parents. Implications for bullying prevention efforts involving parents from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds were discussed.

The current study explored the effects of English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' proficiency level on English-medium instruction (EMI) in an online tutoring project. Sixteen Taiwanese college students (tutees) collaborated with preservice teachers (tutors) in the United States in an EMI online tutorial project. The online tutor-tutee interactions were examined to determine if the two tutee groups of two respective proficiency levels were equally receptive to EMI online tutoring based on nine indicators. The results show that learners of both levels could generate approximately equal amounts of language-related discussions and utterances. Overall, proficiency level did not impede tutees' ability to notice their linguistic gaps in interlanguage. Moreover, tutees of both proficiency levels benefited from the textual display of online interactions with their tutors during a task-based learning scheme. Among the nine indicators, successful uptake and feedback type were two strong predictors of tutees' subsequent target language (L2) learning in both groups. The findings offer pedagogical values to promotion of EMI policy in globalized higher education.

Utilizing ecological theory and multiple world theory, the current study investigated the effects of cultural factors (i.e., Familismo and school climate), parental involvement, and academic socialization on academic achievement of Latina/o secondary school students. This study had 2 primary foci. First, this study sought to address how the cultural value of Familismo and the interaction between home and school cultures play a role in parental involvement and academic achievement. Second, the effect of academic socialization was tested as a distinct factor from parental involvement. Data were collected from 116 Latina/o students living along the U.S./Mexico border. This study tested a path model that explained 30% of the variance in academic achievement, 25% of the variance in academic socialization, and 21% of the variance in parental involvement. Among 8 proposed relationships, 6 were supported while 2 were not. The mediating effects of parental involvement and academic socialization were supported that connect Familismo, school climate, and academic achievement. Implications for Latina/o secondary students who navigate between the different cultural worlds of home and school are discussed.

Using data from The Family Life Project (N = 700), this study examined the pivotal behavior model by testing the hypothesis that children's social engagement at 24 months mediates the relationship between maternal responsiveness at 24 months and children's language outcomes at 36 months. Maternal responsiveness during parent-child interaction in a jigsaw puzzle task when children were 24 months old served as a predictor, and children's social engagement during the same (i.e., persistence, enthusiasm, and compliance) at 24 months, which was assessed during the same task served as the mediator. Children's language comprehension, language expression, and fluency when children were 36 months old served as the dependent variable. Children's expressive communication at 24 months was controlled for. The results supported our hypothesis. Higher maternal responsiveness was related to children's social engagement, which in turn facilitated children's language development. Children's language outcomes also were directly related to caregivers' sensitivity and responsiveness to children's needs, gestures, and expression. Highlights: We test the pivotal behavior model with families from rural areas. Maternal responsiveness is found to be directly related to child language skills. This longitudinal study applied the integrated model of self-determination theory (SDT) and the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) to explain COVID-19 preventive behaviours among parents of young children in the United States. The study adopted a two-wave longitudinal study design. Parents (N = 681) completed self-report questionnaires related to measures of SDT and the TPB constructs and behavioural adherence at baseline and after one month. We used standardised residual change scores to test the structural relationships of the integrated model. The parameter estimates of the model (CFI >.96, TLI >.86, RMSEA =.05, SRMR =.03) fit acceptably well to the data. Psychological need support was positively and significantly linked to autonomous and controlled motivation and amotivation. Autonomous motivation was positively and significantly correlated with TPB factors, and intention. Intention was a significant and positive predictor of behavioural adherence. The integrated model of SDT and the TPB appeared to be applicable to the explanation of COVID-19 prevention among the U.S. parents. Longitudinal data showed that a psychological need supportive social environment was related to favourable motivation, social cognition beliefs, intention and behavioural adherence to the preventive behaviours of parents protecting their young children from COVID-19. Background In 2018, the time window for mechanical thrombectomy eligibility in patients with acute ischemic stroke increased from within 6 hours to within 24 hours of symptom onset. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of window expansion on procedural and hospital volumes and patient outcomes at a national level. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with acute ischemic stroke undergoing mechanical thrombectomy using data from the National Inpatient Sample. We compared the numbers of mechanical thrombectomy procedures and performing hospitals between 2017 and 2019 in the USA, and the proportion of patients discharged home/self-care, those with in-hospital mortality and post-procedural intracranial hemorrhage (2019 vs 2017) after adjustment for potential confounders. Results The number of patients with ischemic stroke who underwent mechanical thrombectomy increased from 16 960 in 2017 to 28 120 in 2019. There was an increase in the number of hospitals performing mechanical thrombectomy (501 in 2017, 585 in 2019) and those performing ≥50 procedures/year (97 in 2017, 199 in 2019; P<0.001). The odds of in-hospital mortality decreased (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.66 to 0.94, P=0.008) and the odds of intracranial hemorrhage increased (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.31, P=0.003) in 2019 compared with 2017, with no change in odds of discharge to home. Conclusions The window expansion for mechanical thrombectomy for patients with acute ischemic stroke was associated with an increase in the numbers of mechanical thrombectomy procedures and performing hospitals with a reduction of in-hospital mortality in the USA. Brain somatic gene recombination (SGR) and the endogenous reverse transcriptases (RTs) that produce it have been implicated in the etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), suggesting RT inhibitors as novel prophylactics or therapeutics. This retrospective, proof-of-concept study evaluated the incidence of AD in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with or without exposure to nucleoside RT inhibitors (NRTIs) using de-identified medical claims data. Eligible participants were aged ≥60 years, without pre-existing AD diagnoses, and pursued medical services in the United States from October 2015 to September 2016. Cohorts 1 (N = 46,218) and 2 (N = 32,923) had HIV. Cohort 1 had prescription claims for at least one NRTI within the exposure period; Cohort 2 did not. Cohort 3 (N = 150,819) had medical claims for the common cold without evidence of HIV or antiretroviral therapy. The cumulative incidence of new AD cases over the ensuing 2.75-year observation period was lowest in patients with NRTI exposure and highest in controls. Age- and sex-adjusted hazard ratios showed a significantly decreased risk for AD in Cohort 1 compared with Cohorts 2 (HR 0.88, p < 0.05) and 3 (HR 0.84, p < 0.05). Sub-grouping identified a decreased AD risk in patients with NRTI exposure but without protease inhibitor (PI) exposure. Background: Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore are the top five cities/countries with the cheapest fixed line broadband as proportion of monthly income. It is interesting to know that several decades ago, they were still among the list of developing nations, struggling for survival and relief. However, they are climbing to the top in ICT development now. Aims: This paper reviews the ICT development in school education of Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore with respect to their social, geographical, and economic backgrounds. Johannessen's three orders of benchmarks are proposed for the comparison. Method: Literature reviews on recent reports, research articles, books and internet data were used to understand the current situation of the ICT development in education for Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore. Conclusion: It is clear that these three cities' determination and relative amount that had invested in the development of ICT in education were enormous when compared with the US investment. Among these three cities, the investment of Singapore has been much larger than the other two. Singapore's apparent leading in the development of ICT in education is not an accident, especially for the first benchmarks. For the second and third benchmarks, Macau lags behind Hong Kong and Singapore, this is partially due to Macau education system is comparatively much liberal than the other two. (Contains 5 tables.)

As one of the popular and promising instructional technologies, Internet is playing a more and more important role in educational field all over the world. Bringing Internet into classrooms is encouraged in many countries; however, their policy initiatives to achieve this vary. The present paper is an empirical and exploratory study, trying to explore the policy initiatives taken by Mainland of China and Taiwan to enable school classrooms to have access to Internet. The educational system and policy initiatives for bringing Internet into classroom are firstly addressed. Then, educational philosophies for these policy initiatives are discussed and are compared with that of in the United States (the E-Rate program). Six new species of Cryptochironomus Kieffer, 1918, C. absum Liu, sp. nov., C. beardi Liu, sp. nov., C. dentatus Liu, sp. nov., C. ferringtoni Liu, sp. nov., C. parallelus Liu, sp. nov. and C. taylorensis Liu, sp. nov., are described and illustrated based on adult males. The specimens were collected from various water systems in the United States and preserved by Dr. Leonard Charles Ferrington Jr. An updated key to adult males of all known Cryptochironomus species in the Nearctic region is also provided. This study explores the intermedia agenda-setting of the U.S. gun control movement in 2018, with a specific focus on the role of activism/advocacy media and ephemeral websites in shaping the movement discourse in news outlets. Structural topic modeling and cross-lagged correlation analyses of the Facebook URLs Share dataset show that activism/advocacy media played an important role in proposing unique agendas and aligning them with other news outlets. Meanwhile, ephemeral websites were prone to containing conspiratorial information, which could have been purposive to influence the movement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between dietary zinc intakes and skeletal muscle mass and strength in children and adolescents. A retrospective study was conducted using data on United States adolescents aged 8 to 19 years. Data were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2014 cycles. Subjects were divided into 3 groups based on the tertiles of dietary zinc intakes. The levels of appendicular skeletal muscle mass divided by weight (ASM/Wt, %) and grip in subjects with the highest tertile were higher than those in subjects with the middle and lowest tertiles (P <.05). Dietary zinc intakes were positively correlated with ASM/Wt (r =.221, P <.001) and grip (r = 0.169, P <.001). After a multivariate analysis, dietary zinc intakes were still significantly associated with ASM/Wt (β = 0.059, P <.001) and grip (β = 0.245, P <.001). The present study demonstrates that dietary zinc intakes were positively associated with skeletal muscle mass and strength in children and adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The features of open educational resources (OERs) have the potential of enhancing teaching effectiveness and student learning experiences in K-12 education. Encouraging K-12 teachers to use OERs requires an understanding of the factors that have an influence on teachers' decisions to adopt or use OERs in their teaching. In this regard, this study explored the factors related to how teachers perceived their use of OERs, including the perceived ease of use of OERs, perceived usefulness of OERs, intention to adopt OERs, attitudes, OER self-efficacy, and so on. The relationships of several proposed factors were explored. The participants were teachers from a university in the northeastern United States. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were applied to analyze the collected data. The results indicated that teachers' perceptions of using OERs were positive overall. Their perceived ease of use and usefulness were two significant predictors of teachers' adoption of OERs. We evaluated the population-level benefits of expanding treatment with the antiviral drug Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir/ritonavir) in the United States for SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infections. Using a multiscale mathematical model, we found that treating 20% of symptomatic case-patients with Paxlovid over a period of 300 days beginning in January 2022 resulted in life and cost savings. In a low-transmission scenario (effective reproduction number of 1.2), this approach could avert 0.28 million (95% CI 0.03-0.59 million) hospitalizations and save US $56.95 billion (95% CI US $2.62-$122.63 billion). In a higher transmission scenario (effective reproduction number of 3), the benefits increase, potentially preventing 0.85 million (95% CI 0.36-1.38 million) hospitalizations and saving US $170.17 billion (95% CI US $60.49-$286.14 billion). Background: Single-cell sequencing (SCS) is a technique used to analyze the genome, transcriptome, epigenome, and other genetic data at the level of a single cell. The procedure is commonly utilized in multiple fields, including neurobiology, immunology, and microbiology, and has emerged as a key focus of life science research. However, a thorough and impartial analysis of the existing state and trends of SCS-related research is lacking. The current study aimed to map the development trends of studies on SCS during the years 2010-2022 through bibliometric software. Methods: Pertinent papers on SCS from 2010 to 2022 were obtained using the Web of Science Core Collection. Research categories, nations/institutions, authors/co-cited authors, journals/co-cited journals, co-cited references, and keywords were analyzed using VOSviewer, the R package "bibliometric", and CiteSpace. Results: The bibliometric analysis included 9,929 papers published between 2010 and 2022, and showed a consistent increase in the quantity of papers each year. The United States was the source of the highest quantity of articles and citations in this field. The majority of articles were published in the periodical Nature Communications. Butler A was the most frequently quoted author on this topic, and his article "Integrating single-cell transcriptome data across diverse conditions, technologies, and species" has received numerous citations to date. The literature and keyword analysis showed that studies involving single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) were prominent in this discipline during the study period. Conclusion: This study utilized bibliometric techniques to visualize research in SCS-related domains, which facilitated the identification of emerging patterns and future directions in the field. Current hot topics in SCS research include COVID-19, tumor microenvironment, scRNA-seq, and neuroscience. Objective: To explore the associations between the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and the risk of developing uveitis among cancer patients. Methods: Cancer patients who received ICI therapy and a comparison group of cancer patients who did not receive ICI therapy were retrospectively recruited from the TriNetX electronic heath-record registry. The outcome of interest was the development of new-onset uveitis. Propensity score matching based on a 1:1 ratio was conducted in order to reduce bias. Multi-variate cox proportional hazard models and Kaplan Meier method were also utilized to assess for the risk of uveitis among cancer patients who received ICI therapy. Results: 71931 cancer patients (54.7% male; 76.5% white; mean age at index 63.6 ± 12.2 years) who received ICI treatment (ICI group) and 71931 cancer patients (54.7% male; 77% white; mean age at index 63.5 ± 12.4 years) who never received ICI (comparison group) were recruited. Associated Kaplan-Meier curves showed significantly increased uveitis risk among the ICI group for all follow-up years (p<0.001). The risk of uveitis was also higher among the ICI group during the 144-month follow-up period with a hazard ratio (HR) of 2.39 (95% CI: 2.07-2.75). Increased risk for specific uveitis diseases, such as iridocyclitis, chorioretinal inflammation, retinal vasculitis, unspecified purulent endophthalmitis, panuveitis and sympathetic uveitis were found. Subgroup analysis demonstrated an elevated hazard ratio for the development of uveitis among ICI recipients, spanning individuals below the age of 65 as well as those aged 65 and older. The elevated hazard ratio for uveitis development among ICI recipients was also observed across all genders, among those of white and Asian ethnicities, those with smoking history, and those with comorbid conditions such as hypertension and dyslipidemia, in comparison to their non-ICI counterparts. An additional subgroup analysis on monotherapy versus combinatory ICI regimens was also conducted. Individuals who received monotherapy from the class of anti-PD-1 (HR:1.98 [CI: 1.65-2.37]) and anti-CTLA-4 (HR:5.86 [CI:1.99-17.24]) exhibited elevated hazard ratios for uveitis development compared to their non-ICI comparators. Those exposed to combinatory ICI regimens, specifically a combination of anti-PD-1 and anti-CTLA4 (HR: 5.04 [CI:3.55-7.16]), showed increased hazard ratios for uveitis development compared to their non-ICI comparators. In contrast, individuals exposed to a combination of anti-PD-1 and anti-PD-L1 (HR: 2.47 [CI:0.81-7.50]) did not demonstrate an increased risk for uveitis compared to their non-ICI comparators. Conclusion: A significantly increased risk for uveitis diseases was found among the ICI group from the first year of follow-up. Few studies have focused on the associations of adolescent substance use and depressive symptoms with adult major depressive disorder (MDD). Data from 168,859 adults, among which, 15,959 had experienced MDD in the past year, as indicated by a major depressive episode (MDE) marked by MDD symptoms, were from the 2016–2019 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health. Weighted multivariable logistic regression (MLR) analyses were used to determine the associations. The overall MDD prevalence was 7.2 %, whereas the prevalence for adults without early onset depressive symptoms prior to age 18 was 4.6 %. Variable cluster analysis revealed that adolescent use of alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogen use, and inhalants prior to age 18 were in one cluster. MLR analyses showed that the presence of depressive symptoms prior to age 18 was the major risk factor for MDD, while adolescent use of alcohol, marijuana, and inhalants prior to age 18 were associated with increased odds of MDD (p < 0.05) both in the whole data and the subset of adults without depressive symptoms prior to age 18. Adolescent use of cocaine prior to age 18 were associated with MDD only in the whole data, whereas adolescent smokeless tobacco use was associated with MDD only in those without depressive symptoms prior to age 18. These findings highlight the comorbid early substance use and depressive symptoms during adolescence with adult MDD. This study investigated pre-service teachers' perceptions of technological pedagogical content knowledge of digital games (TPACK-G), the correlation of TPACK-G constructs, and the relation of TPACK-G to personal factors and levels of motivation and self-efficacy. Participants were 96 pre-service teachers from a university in the northeastern United States. Data were collected using online surveys. Quantitative approaches were performed to analyze the data. Results indicated that game content knowledge (GCK) and game pedagogical knowledge (GPK) significantly predicted pre-service teachers' game pedagogical content knowledge (GPCK), with GPK being the strongest predictor. Pre-service teachers with high levels of motivation or self-efficacy for digital game integration had significantly better TPACK-G than those with low levels. Personal factors, including gender and prior experiences with digital games, were found to be influential to pre-service teachers' TPACK-G. An increasing number of parents in China are enrolling their preschool children in after-school programs provided by private, for-profit early learning centers. This study used a qualitative approach to explore how teachers in these centers understood and implemented play and play-based curricula. Data were collected by examining the curriculum design of an American-style, early learning center, interviewing two of their teachers, and observing the teaching practices of the two teachers. Thematic analysis showed that the two teachers generally endorsed the importance of play in child learning. They also agreed that play should be enjoyable, creative, and developmentally appropriate. However, although the curriculum of the center emphasized its strict adherence to a child-centered approach and one of the teachers was able to articulate such emphasis during the interview, in practice, the two teachers quite uniformly organized their classes around specific teaching goals and learning outcomes. Pedagogical play, which was rule based and teacher driven, was much more evident than free play. Instead of a direct replication, an indigenized curriculum, in which play-based teaching was carried out in a way that meets Chinese traditional expectations for children to show self-restraint and for teachers to be respected, appeared to have been created.

There has been a growing literature focusing on the persuasive effect of interactive narratives, but the findings are mixed. Furthermore, very few studies have examined how the impact of interactive narratives varies depending on story features and characteristics of the recipients. Informed by the research of interactive narratives and message framing, the current study empirically tests the indirect effect of an interactive narrative on attitude change using a digital anti-indoor tanning game, with transportation as a mediator and narrative ending and issue involvement as two second-stage moderators. Findings suggested a moderated moderated mediation relationship in which the indirect effect of the interactive narrative was the strongest for low-involvement participants when they experienced a loss-framed ending and was the weakest for high-involvement participants when they encountered the same type of ending. When constructing measurement scales, regular and reversed items are often used (e.g., "I am satisfied with my job"/"I am not satisfied with my job"). Some methodologists recommend excluding reversed items because they are more difficult to understand and therefore engender a second, artificial factor distinct from the regular-item factor. The current study compares two explanations for why a construct's dimensionality may become distorted: response difficulty and item extremity. Two types of reversed items were created: negation items ("The conditions of my life are not good") and polar opposites ("The conditions of my life are bad"), with the former type having higher response difficulty. When extreme wording was used (e.g., "excellent/terrible" instead of "good/bad"), negation items did not load on a factor distinct from regular items, but polar opposites did. Results thus support item extremity over response difficulty as an explanation for dimensionality distortion. Although perceived language discrimination (PLD) is associated with negative psychological outcomes among international students with Chinese heritage, existing research on PLD is scarce. This study aims to address this gap. Given that many Chinese cultures are characterized as shame-based, we examined whether PLD would be associated with interpersonal shame (i.e. mediator) which in turn would predict depressive symptoms. We also investigated whether collective self-esteem, a culturally relevant variable, would buffer against the negative effects of PLD on interpersonal shame and attenuate the mediation effect from PLD through interpersonal shame to depressive symptoms (i.e. moderated mediation). This cross-sectional study utilized self-report surveys and collected data from 222 international students with Chinese heritage from different regions of the U.S. The results showed that interpersonal shame mediated the association between PLD and depressive symptoms. In addition, membership collective self-esteem moderated the association between PLD and interpersonal shame. The results also indicated that the mediation effects from PLD to depression through interpersonal shame were significant at low and moderate levels but not significant at high levels of membership collective self-esteem. Findings highlight the protective role of membership collective self-esteem for those who have experienced PLD and are struggling with interpersonal shame and depressive symptoms. The one‐third power of the energy dissipation rate (EDR), a primary aviation turbulence metric, is calculated using high vertical‐resolution radiosonde data (HVRRD) and compared with flight‐EDR observed from commercial airlines. Comparisons are made along the main flight routes over the United States and at z = 20–45 kft for 6 years (2012–2017). The horizontal distributions of moderate‐or‐greater (MOG) ratio of HVRRD‐EDR show large values over the Rocky Mountains, consistent with those of flight‐EDR. Vertically, the MOG ratios of HVRRD‐EDR show local peaks at z = 20–23 kft and 41–44 kft, while those of flight‐EDR at z = 23–26 kft and 35–41 kft. Temporally, HVRRD‐EDR has maximum MOG values in JJA and minimum values in DJF at z = 20–30 kft, which is opposite to the flight‐EDR. At z = 30–40 kft, HVRRD‐EDR shows nearly no seasonal variation but flight‐EDR has large values in MAM and small values in JJA. At z = 40–45 kft, HVRRD‐EDR (flight‐EDR) shows large values in MAM and small values in SON (DJF). Discrepancies in spatiotemporal distributions between the two data sets likely stem from: (a) turbulence observed from the two data sets cannot be the same event, (b) the limitation of HVRRD‐EDR in capturing shear‐instability under statically stable condition (i.e., Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability) which probably accounts for most flight‐EDR events at upper levels, and (c) limitation in aircraft measurements response to fluctuations at smaller scales than the aircraft size. Plain Language Summary: We calculated a primary aviation turbulence metric, eddy dissipation rate (EDR), using operational high‐resolution radiosonde data and compared it with flight‐EDR observed from commercial airlines. EDR is an index for representing the intensity of turbulence. Analyzing 6 years of data (2012–2017) over the United States, we find that the horizontal distributions of both EDRs from radiosonde data and flight data show large values over the Rocky Mountains. However, they show large differences in vertical and temporal distributions in terms of their peak location and timing. We attribute these discrepancies to three factors. First, turbulence observed from the two data sets cannot be the same event, because the radiosonde and aircraft cannot coincide at the same location and time. Second, the sources of turbulence derived from radiosonde and flight observation may be different: static‐instability and dynamic‐instability for radiosonde‐EDR and flight‐EDR, respectively. Third, aircraft have limitations detecting fluctuation at scales smaller than the aircraft size. Given the limited global data on atmospheric turbulence, EDR estimated from operational radiosonde data can be a valuable resource for research and development for the aviation industry and numerical weather forecasting models. Background and Aim: Hepatic steatosis (HS) is common worldwide, but there is little data on the prevalence of HS in Pacific Islanders (PIs) and Asians within the United States. Our aim was to compare prevalence of HS in obese 18–50‐year‐olds of Asian and PI ethnicity who underwent computerized tomography (CT). Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of all members of an integrated healthcare system who self‐identified as Asian or PI, were between the ages of 18 and 50 years, had a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30, and underwent a CT scan that included the liver during 2021, resulting in 748 subjects. Imaging was analyzed using a method sensitive and specific for moderate to severe HS. Additionally, multiple binary logistic regression was performed to explore the relationship between HS and HbA1c, BMI, and age. Results: Of the 748 patients, 311 (41.6%) had HS. We found no significant difference in the prevalence of HS between Asians and PIs (χ21 = 1.3, P = 0.25), between Asian and PI men (χ21 = 2.8, P = 0.096), or between Asian and PI women (χ21 = 0.053, P = 0.82). Higher odds of HS was associated with increasing BMI (OR = 1.08; 95% CI: 1.06–1.11; P < 0.001) and HbA1c (OR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.04–1.26; P = 0.00489), but HS was not associated with age in this age range (OR = 0.993; 95% CI: 0.973–1.01; P = 0.46). Conclusion: Moderate to severe HS is very common in obese Asian and PI adults, and occurs at similar rates in these ethnicities. Purpose: This paper aims to explore the holistic picture of sustainability curricula in Asian higher education. Design/methodology/approach: Content analysis was conducted based on Asian management education for sustainability in higher education. Online courses arrangement, teaching methods, instructors' educational background and cross-referencing data between triple bottom line and sustainability courses have been investigated. Findings: The paper provides empirical insights about the current state of sustainability education in Asia. The results show that there is an opportunity for interdisciplinary integration, as there are imbalanced sustainability courses offered by business, science and engineering schools. It also suggests that Asian universities should add an international connection and active promotion of sustainability education on their Web sites. Research limitations/implications: Findings are based on web-based sustainability-related courses. Future research could apply method of case study to do a deeper study. Practical implications: The paper provides an overview of Asian management education for sustainability and curricula analysis through our research, and that this will further assist in the development of interdisciplinary integration in Asian management education for sustainability. Originality/value: This paper is the first attempt to gain better understanding of sustainability-related courses offered in leading business/management colleges in Asia.

Background: Despite the popularity of dietary supplements, their effectiveness and safety in patients with diabetes remain controversial. Furthermore, evidence from clinical trials may not be generalizable to real-world settings. This study examined the association between dietary supplement use and mortality outcomes among patients with diabetes based on a nationally representative sample of US adults. Methods: This study analyzed data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999–2018. Supplement users referred to adults with diabetes who reported the use of any dietary supplements in the last 30 days, and with a cumulative duration of ≥ 90 days. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations between supplement use and all-cause mortality, and mortality from cardiovascular diseases (CVD), diabetes, and cancer. Subgroup analysis of different supplement classes (vitamins, minerals, botanicals, amino acids, fatty acids, probiotics and glucosamine) were also conducted. Results: We included 8,122 adults with diabetes (mean age: 59.4 years; 48.7% female), of whom 3,997 (54.0%) reported using supplements regularly. Vitamins (87.3%), minerals (75.3%) and botanicals (51.8%) were the most popular supplements. At a median follow-up of 6.9 years, 2447 all-cause deaths had occurred. Overall supplement use was not associated with risk of all-cause mortality among patients with diabetes (HR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.87 to 1.08, P = 0.56). Subgroup analyses suggested that amino acid use was associated with a lower all-cause mortality (HR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.46 to 0.96, P = 0.028), while the use of fatty acids (HR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.42 to 0.92, P = 0.018) and glucosamine (HR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.51 to 0.95, P = 0.022) supplements were significantly associated with lower CVD mortality. Conclusions: Our results derived from real-world data suggested that overall supplement use was not associated with any mortality benefit in patients with diabetes. However, there is preliminary evidence that suggests a protective effect of amino acid use on all-cause mortality, and a benefit of fatty acids and glucosamine supplement use on CVD mortality. Future large-scale longitudinal studies are needed to investigate the association between dietary supplement use and other intermediate diabetes-related outcomes, such as glucose control and reducing diabetes-related complications. Researchers have found that the stigma associated with seeking therapy--particularly self-stigma--can inhibit the use of psychological services. Yet, most of the research on self-stigma has been conducted in the United States. This is a considerable limitation, as the role of self-stigma in the help-seeking process may vary across cultural groups. However, to examine cross-cultural variations, researchers must first develop culturally valid scales. Therefore, this study examined scale validity and reliability of the widely used Self-Stigma of Seeking Help scale (SSOSH; Vogel, Wade, & Haake, 2006) across samples from 6 different countries (England, Greece, Israel, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United States). Specifically, we used a confirmatory factor analysis framework to conduct measurement invariance analysis and latent mean comparisons of the SSOSH across the 6 sampled countries. Overall, the results suggested that the SSOSH has a similar univariate structure across countries and is sufficiently invariant across countries to be used to explore cultural differences in the way that self-stigma relates to help-seeking behavior. This study investigated the effectiveness of incidental focus on form in promoting second language development in text-based live chats. Sixteen college-level Taiwanese English language learners were partnered with American college students to complete two communicative tasks via synchronous chats on Instant Messenger. Language-related episodes (LREs) were identified and used as a basis for individualized test items in which the participants' linguistic issues were addressed and recalled. The results of two posttests revealed that focus on form in text-based live chats was highly associated with subsequent second language development. Successful uptake and type of feedback were two major factors for learners' accurate grammatical and lexical knowledge recall, which serve as pedagogical guidelines to promote noticing in second language development.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disease that causes ocular discomfort and visual impairment on a damaged ocular surface. Lifitegrast, a novel T-cell integrin antagonist, was approved in the United States in July 2016 as a 5% (50 mg/mL) ophthalmic solution for DED management. Currently, no meta-analysis and systemic review based on relevant studies have been conducted. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of lifitegrast in patients with DED. We systematically searched Embase, Medline, PubMed, and Web of Science for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and nonrandomized studies evaluating lifitegrast effects on symptomatic DED. Then, inferior corneal staining score, total corneal staining score (TCSS), nasal lissamine staining score (NLSS), total lissamine staining score, ocular discomfort score (ODS), eye discomfort score (visual analog scale (VAS) score), eye dryness score (EDS), ocular surface disease index score (OSDI-S), and tear break-up time (TBUT) were assessed. Clinical global impression and safety profiles were also evaluated. The studies were pooled in a random-effects model. We included five RCTs, one case–control study, and four longitudinal or retrospective studies, comprising 3197 participants. In the meta-analysis, lifitegrast was superior to the placebo because it improved TCSS, NLSS, TBUT, ODS, eye discomfort score, EDS, and OSDI-Sin DED. However, lifitegrast showed higher risks for ocular and non-ocular treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) overall or at a mild or moderate level. Nonetheless, its incidence of adverse events slightly differed from that in the placebo, especially instillation site discomforts and dysgeusia, thereby considered safe and tolerable. Claims of withdrawal during follow-up caused by TEAEs were extremely rare. Lifitegrast improves DED, although dysgeusia, installation site pain, and irritation may be a concern for some. The aim of this study was to identify variables that reliably differentiated between 2 groups of students who reported binge drinking at the same rate (6 to more than 10 times within the previous 2 weeks) but who exhibited different distress associated with their behavior. Results indicated that students who received an external expression of concern were more likely to be concerned themselves about their alcohol use. The clinical utility of this finding is discussed.

Background: There is uncertainty regarding the impact of multidrug-resistant organisms on patients that undergo cardiac surgery. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed by using 2016–2019 data from the National Inpatient Sample in the United States to evaluate the proportion of admissions with a diagnosis of antimicrobial resistance who also underwent coronary artery bypass graft or valve surgery. Results: A total of 1,260,630 admissions were included in the analysis, of which 2045 (0.16%) had antimicrobial resistance. Compared to patients without resistance, those with antimicrobial resistance were more likely to be female (52.8% vs. 31.5%, p < 0.001), and die in a hospital (7.1% vs. 2.4%, p < 0.001). The length of stay and cost were significantly higher for patients with antimicrobial resistance (15 vs. 7 days and USD 69,135 vs. USD 43,740, respectively). Antimicrobial resistance was not associated with increased in-hospital mortality (OR 1.38; 95% CI 0.86–2.21, p = 0.18), although it was associated with an increase in length of stay (coefficient 7.65; 95% CI 6.91–8.39, p < 0.001), and cost (coefficient USD 25,240 [21,626–28,854], p < 0.001). Conclusions: Antimicrobial resistance in patients that undergo cardiac surgery is not common, yet its burden is substantial as it can double the length of stay and increase costs by more than USD 20,000. This study investigated pre-service teachers' perceptions of using iPads in teaching, with a focus on motivation to adopt iPads, iPad-integration self-efficacy, and intention to adopt iPads for future teaching. Changes of pre-service teachers' perceptions of using iPads over time as well as the relationships of motivation, self-efficacy, and intention for iPad adoption were examined. Participants were pre-service teachers from a university in the northeastern United States. Data were collected using online pre- and post-surveys. Quantitative and qualitative approaches were performed to analyze the data. Results indicated that there were significant changes in pre-service teachers' motivation and intention to adopt iPads before and after their participation in a mobile learning project. Motivation and iPad-integration self-efficacy were significant predictors of pre-service teachers' intention for future adoption. iPad ownership and prior experience with iPad-integrated lesson plans were potential factors that had a significant impact on pre-service teachers' perceptions of using iPads in future teaching. Pre-service teachers' perceived advantages and disadvantages of using iPads were reported and discussed. The findings of this study not only contribute to the understanding of iPad integration among pre-service teachers, but also provide an evidence on the positive influence of iPad-integrated activities on pre-service teachers' perceptions of using iPads for future teaching. Background Prior observation has shown differences in COVID-19 hospitalization risk between SARS-CoV-2 variants, but limited information describes hospitalization outcomes. Methods Inpatients with COVID-19 at 5 hospitals in the eastern United States were included if they had hypoxia, tachypnea, tachycardia, or fever, and SARS-CoV-2 variant data, determined from whole-genome sequencing or local surveillance inference. Analyses were stratified by history of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination or infection. The average effect of SARS-CoV-2 variant on 28-day risk of severe disease, defined by advanced respiratory support needs, or death was evaluated using models weighted on propensity scores derived from baseline clinical features. Results Severe disease or death within 28 days occurred for 977 (29%) of 3369 unvaccinated patients and 269 (22%) of 1230 patients with history of vaccination or prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. Among unvaccinated patients, the relative risk of severe disease or death for Delta variant compared with ancestral lineages was 1.30 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.11–1.49). Compared with Delta, the risk for Omicron patients was.72 (95% CI:.59–.88) and compared with ancestral lineages was.94 (.78–1.1). Among Omicron and Delta infections, patients with history of vaccination or prior SARS-CoV-2 infection had half the risk of severe disease or death (adjusted hazard ratio:.40; 95% CI:.30–.54), but no significant outcome difference by variant. Conclusions Although risk of severe disease or death for unvaccinated inpatients with Omicron was lower than with Delta, it was similar to ancestral lineages. Spiritual bypassing is the propensity to avoid emotional discomfort and pain through exercising spiritual beliefs and practices. The Spiritual Bypass Scale-13 (SBS-13) was developed to assess the two major components of spiritual bypassing – avoidance and spiritualising. The purpose of this study was to translate the SBS-13 into Korean and examine its psychometric properties. Korean adults (N = 357) living in Korea or the United States completed the Korean-translated version of the SBS-13 and demographic items. The SBS-13 was translated and back-translated and finalised. Confirmatory factor analysis results supported a two-factor model consisting of psychological avoidance and spiritualising factors. A second-order factor model that explained both psychological avoidance and spiritualising also fit well. Item-statistics and ordinal alphas were acceptable. This study provides initial psychometric evidence suggesting that spiritual bypassing is similarly structured in Korea as in other countries such as the United States, Brazil, and India. With efficient transduction across most cell types and larger packaging capacity, Adenovirus 5 (Ad5) makes an attractive choice as a viral vector. However, a reported past mortality and known immunogenicity cast doubt on the safety of its use. An online database search was performed for all clinical trials administering intratumoral injection of gene therapy packaged in Ad5, being conducted in the United States, and using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE). Studies with unclear adverse events (AE) were excluded. The primary outcome collected was grade ≥3 (AE). Analyses were performed using Fisher's exact test. Thirty-nine prospective clinical trials across a variety of cancers were identified: 14 studies of therapeutic Ad5 alone, 12 with chemotherapy, 16 with radiation, and 11 with surgery. There were 3 mortalities out of 756 patients (0.4%), which were most likely unrelated to Ad5: 1 due to hypoxic encephalopathy, 1 due to splenic vein thrombus, and 1 due to disease progression. In trials that reported total AE (grades 1–5), there were 284 (10.3%) grade ≥3 AE out of 2,745 total AE in 477 patients. The overall life-threatening (grade 4) AE rate was 1.4% (34/2,425 AE in 428 patients). Overall, the most frequent grade ≥3 AE were lymphopenia (20.6% in 14 trials, 209 patients), dyspnea (8.7% in 11 trials, 208 patients), and neutropenia (8.6% in 12 trials, 174 patients). The most frequent grade 4 AE were neutropenia (4.6%), lymphopenia (3.3%), and leukopenia (3.1% in 13 trials, 192 patients). Our analyses demonstrated relative overall safety of Ad5 and warrant re-evaluation for the use of Ad5 as a delivery vector for gene therapy products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
