Background: Taiwan's Diabetes Shared Care Program has been implemented since 2012, and the health information system plays a vital role in supporting most services of this program. However, little is known regarding the effectiveness of this information-based program. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of the participation of the Diabetes Shared Care Program on preventable hospitalizations., Methods: This longitudinal study examined the data of health-care claims from 2011 to 2014 obtained from the diabetes mellitus health database. Patients with diabetes aged ≥18 years were included. Preventable hospitalizations were identified on the basis of prevention quality indicators developed for administrative data by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. A multilevel logistic regression was performed to examine the effects of the participation of the Diabetes Shared Care Program on preventable hospitalizations after adjustment for other variables. Analyses were conducted in late 2018., Results: A medium level of participation (p = 0.05), age between 40 and 64 years(p < 0.0001), and absence of a catastrophic illness(p < 0.0001) were associated with a lower probability of having a preventable hospitalization. Male sex(p < 0.0001), age ≥ 65 years(p = 0.0203), low income level(p < 0.0001), living in the Southern division(p = 0.0106), and presence of many comorbidities(p < 0.0001) were associated with a higher probability of having a preventable hospitalization after adjustment for characteristics at the individual and county levels., Conclusions: The health information system records patients' medical history, monitors quality of care, schedules patient follow-ups, and reminds case managers to provide timely health education. This health-information-based Diabetes Shared Care Program is associated with better quality care of ambulatory, so it should be promoted on a broader scale.

Launched in 2008, the Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD) permits the search of any term that appears anywhere on product labels. Since then, the database's search and download features have been periodically improved to enhance use for researchers and consumers. In this review, we describe how to customize searches and identify products and ingredients of interest to users in the DSLD, and provide the limitations of working with information derived from dietary supplement product labels. This article describes how data derived from information printed on product labels are entered and organized in the DSLD. Among the challenges are determining the chemical forms, types of extract, and amounts of dietary ingredients, especially when these are components of proprietary blends. The FDA announced new dietary supplement labeling regulations in May 2016. The 2017 DSLD has been updated to reflect them. These new regulations and examples cited in this article refer to this redesigned version of the DSLD. Search selection characteristics such as for product type and intended user group are as described in FDA guidance and regulations for dietary supplements. For this reason, some age groups (such as teens and seniors) and marketing recommendations for use (e.g., weight loss, performance, and other disease- or condition-specific claims) are not included in the search selections. The DSLD user interface features will be revised periodically to reflect regulatory and technologic developments to enhance user experience. A comprehensive database derived from analytically verified data on composition would be preferable to label data, but is not feasible for technical, logistic, and financial reasons. Therefore, a database derived from information printed on product labels is the only practical option at present for researchers, clinicians, and consumers interested in the composition of these products., (© Crown copyright 2018.)

The article reviews basic principles about radiation and its measurement, short-term and long-term effects of radiation, and medical countermeasures as well as essential information about how to prepare for and respond to a nuclear detonation. A link is provided to the manual itself, which in turn is heavily referenced for readers who wish to have more detail.

Concerned over the growing epidemic of death by suicide in the United States, the National Institute of Mental Health of the U.S. National Institutes of Health funded Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) projects using innovative web-based approaches to provide resources to professionals and the general public about suicide prevention. The Preventing Suicide Network (PSN) was funded (SBIR Contract #N44MH22044) and developed over a three and a half year period (2001-2005) as part of this initiative. The PSN provides intermediaries (those who participate in activities to prevent suicide) with an online community dedicated to timely access to authoritative and problem-specific tailored information.

The Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), produced and maintained by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), contains over 4600 records on potentially hazardous chemicals. To enhance information retrieval from HSDB, NLM has undertaken the development of an automated HSDB indexing protocol as part of its Indexing Initiative. The NLM Indexing Initiative investigates methods whereby automated indexing may partially or completely substitute for human indexing. The poster's purpose is to describe the HSDB Automated Indexing Project.

The objective of NLM's Indexing Initiative (IND) is to investigate methods whereby automated indexing methods partially or completely substitute for current indexing practices. The project will be considered a success if methods can be designed and implemented that result in retrieval performance that is equal to or better than the retrieval performance of systems based principally on humanly assigned index terms. We describe the current state of the project and discuss our plans for the future.
